    What Elliotte said about the Jackets is spot-on.
    They hadn't won a playoff series prior to this season, and needed to do something extra. I don't think they ever had the Cup in mind; they just wanted to win a playoff round or two, and make some noise. They did exactly that by sweeping Tampa, and putting up a good fight with the Bruins.
    Jarmo easily could've said "nope" and traded Panarin + Bob at the deadline instead. He had every right to do so. He would've gotten something for nothing. Only issue is that if that happens - they're pretty much a guarantee to miss the playoffs, and Jarmo could've been out of a job. Now that we've seen the Metro get better this offseason, who knows if the Jackets will even make the playoffs next season, or the season after that.
    Jarmo took a massive gamble - something any GM should do if they're in this situation. He might've lost 3 key players (Panarin, Bob, Duchene) when it's all said and done, but in my eyes he's a winner because he was willing to be gutsy.

      Agreed 100%. Columbus pulled off the greatest upset in NHL history that absolutely no one saw coming. Tampa was essentially pencilled in to win the Cup, and they were embarrassed in historic fashion by the Jackets. Columbus was four goalposts away from forcing a Game 7 against the Bruins. Jarmo Kekkalainen may look like a loser today, but his fanbase shouldn't hate him. He gave that city something to cheer about for the first time in 20 years.

      If you're a season ticket holder (or a prospective one) are you motivated to buy this year based on what happened last year or are you considering cancelling based on the lack of prospects this year's team has?
      I have to think losing their best player, their starting star goalie, this year's first rounder, the player they got for that first rounder all outweigh the benefit of winning a round. I like the "no guts, no glory" attitude, but I always felt it was mistimed and I'm surprised he still has a job tbh.

    • @stoddard1953
      @stoddard1953 5 років тому +2

      @@rivahkillah If I was a season ticket holder I would still buy. Like Elliotte said in the video the fanbase was rewarded when Jarmo went all-in; he sent a strong message to fans essentially saying he's going to put them first. It's that kind of attitude that would make me feel confident in management despite losing key players this offseason.
      Remember that the Jackets aren't completely depleted; they still have Dubois, Atkinson, Jenner, Jones and Werenski to build around. They signed Nyquist yesterday, and they might not be done just yet.

    After seeing how excited Columbus has gotten excited about hockey after this season, I 100% agree with Friedman. Whether the trade deadline moves are a great thing depends on your perspective. I see it as foolhardy. It's like gambling a year's salary on a longshot horse. But we'll see, maybe the Jackets can be competitive quickly, but if they lose 40+ games for the next 3 or 4 years (which I think is likely), it is time to spend that season ticket money on something else.

    As a Jackets fan, being at the arena when we finished off Tampa, I wouldn't trade that feeling for anything. Having followed the Jackets since the beginning, it was the best feeling ever. So as Blue Jackets fans we need to be real, we knew today was gonna suck. But let’s look at the positives. We got a solid signing in Gustav Nyquist, we still have Korpi who has shown real promise, Elvis Merzlikens is supposedly a monster in net, we still have Foligno, Werenski, Jones, Savard, Murray, Atkinson, PLD, and Boone. We still have the winningest American coach in NHL history. A bunch of European players coming in like Garikov and Texier to name a couple. There was a lot of bad today but I truly don’t think this is gonna be as bad as people think. We also have a ton of cap space left

    Friedman is right when he says CBJ played it right. They got Duchene and went all in. They swept the best team in the NHL. If the stars had aligned properly and they kept that magic going they win a cup. I honestly think the time off after the sweep hurt them rather than helped them. They were too good and had too much expectation going into that 2nd round.

      @TheRickRoller1 5 років тому

      rivahkillah they would have missed the playoffs next year because Panarin and Bobrovski had their mind set on leaving. Yes they will likely miss the playoffs (not by a lot) or maybe their playoff run will have inspired younger players. People buy season tickets based on the year before so it’ll be alright. Plus they might make a big move this summer. My only criticism is I thought they were going to try trading their players before July first for conditional picks. They could have tried that to get some picks this year.

You do not because the chances of it paying off makes it a bad investment. Not coincidentally, that is also why the Jackets are not a preferred destination for the league's top free agents. Not a rangers fan (my best friend is, so I watch alot of their games). You guys def sped up the rebuild and made some good moves. The only thing I'm not a huge fan of for them is the amount of cap space used up for Panarin (granted hes a great player and probably worth it). After signing trouba, lemieux and the rest of their RFAs they'll be at the cap ceiling. That's the only thing I dont like about their current situation. However, if it gets Hank a cup in the next 3 years before Kappo and some of their other young guys need to have cap space cleared for their raises then it was all worth it for them.

      Michael Mignone Gorton has been working magic he will trade and move around players to free up any space we need plus a lot of expensive unworthy contracts are expiring over the next few seasons for our young talent

    Nothing on west coast teams like the Canucks? Oh right. TSN is the Toronto Sports Network and SN is owned by Rogers, as well. It's good to see them happy now that their Laffs are a decent team now. They've been miserable for over a decade with the exception of Ray Ferraro.

      @Chewy Ltd A team can go a max of 10% over the cap during the offseason, so Habs still have around $11.5 mil to work with, and at this point they wouldn't be interested in any UFA aside from Gardiner so there's no gamble on their end.
