I just want to say thank for putting so much work into this fantastic video! This has become by go-to for when people ask me why I am so fond of Epcot/Disney parks. Just watch this and you'll see!
THIS version was a masterpiece. When my then-girlfriend (whose favorite ride at the time was this Irons edition) and I rode the Dench version for the first time, when we walked out she cried. Literally CRIED.
I was sooo disappointed when I rode the new version as well. I can't believe they replaced the music, the fiberoptics and the extra scenes all for some stupid iPad. Disney is losing their touch....
I was too young to really remember the Irons version well enough, but whenever I watched the home videos my family made of this ride the ending would always make me tear up a little, it is just so beautiful. A real work of art
This is the best version of Spaceship Earth. It was more theatrical, moody, and inspiring. Plus Jeremy Irons had a fantastic narration and the music was gorgeous. The current version is bland and already dated. You can put a picture of your face over any motion cartoon on your phone these days.
I have to agree; I freakin' LOVED this version. I hated the idea that now it's all about the computer age and how virtual reality is taking over especially with the ending.
yeah, some people though the narration was provided Scar. XD (due to the fact that Jeremy Irons voiced him in The Lion King on the same year the attraction reopened)
lol I agree! I think Living with the Land is the only ride that is still the same from the 90s. Maelstrom is gone as is Wonders of Life and Universe of Energy, the Living Seas is now The Seas with Nemo and Friends, ... OMG it’s so different!
OMG I miss this version! Its my favorite version and the only one I knew growing up. Oh man I loved how the effects looked and that finale! Omg! that music gives me goosebumps! I love it! thank you for putting this up, giving amazing memories back to me XD
I miss this version of Spaceship Earth. I remember is as a kid and even calling my godfather on one of those giant telephones in the Global Neighborhood. I bet present day me would get chills at that finale. The current version just lacks the charm this one has.
Absolutely love your videos. I was only born 5 months before Epcot opened, but have grown up going to WDW and your videos bring me back to an awesome time there.
in my opinion this was the best version not to take away from the current one.. I enjoy closing my eyes in the beginning of the ride total darkness and soaking in the music before irons speaks..
When you suddenly realize that EPCOT in the late 80s-90s has more style, variety, charm and excessive amount tech, creativity and imagination than today's EPCOT. O.O
What happened was the future caught up with the original EPCOT Center's Future World, but instead of riding with the punches and advancing upon the park's original premise, Disney has given up and made it into the "miscellaneous park".
Couldn't have said it better. They should honestly have just left it completely alone. Even if it was starting to be outdated, it could have served as a time capsule for what the 'future' looked like in the 80's.
Today's EPCOT is about plugging IP's. Sadly, who do you think Disney is going to cater to? The small percentage of nostalgics out there or people who want a new and exciting Guardians of the Galaxy ride?
Yeah, they could’ve continued to update with the latest technology and looking into potential future innovations. Instead, they got lazy and decided to go with the global community approach and throwing in some Disney IPs for the sake of broader appeal.
18:03 seeing this city scene almost brought me to tears. it was such a beautiful scene, i remember i have been to WDW a few times before 2007 and i remember this scene so much, what a shame it was replaced with a bunch of hanging white christmas lights & mirrors that basically make you trip out and have to do that "bUiLd YoUr OwN fUtUrE" bull shit. Jeremy Irons is also better than Judi Dench, but i like her.
I was born in 2000 so I hardly remember this version, but seeing this ending makes me hope that they bring back this ending or a very similar ending for the 2021 revamp of the ride
First rode this on my first trip in '96 and remember thinking as a kid, "Why is Scar the voice in here?" What I didn't remember was the sheer extent of extra scenes included during the descent. The current version with the screens-only as you return to the base station really makes me question why Spaceship Earth is the way it is (now). Also, while I like Judi Dench, Jeremy's narration feels more grand and epic, whereas Judi's feels very much like reading from a history book with a slightly cheerful, upbeat tone. Its passable, but can't compare to what came before it.
I remember going on this version as a kid and the beginning scene kind of intimidated me. It was pitch black except for these almost haunting projections on the wall and hearing Jeremy Irons chilling voice.
You are the master, Martin. Your videos provide so much depth and history of all the attractions you do. No one else does it better. I've watched so many of them multiple times. They're that good! Keep it up!
When you look at all the video chat depicted in the descent now in 2020 you see exactly how forward-thinking Disney and AT&T were 30 years prior - wild.
I was extremely lucky to hear both Walter Kronkite narrating and Jeremy Irons narrating. I went in 1993 with my mom and her then boyfriend and that was when they had Kronkite narrating Spaceship Earth and then went back the year after again with my mom and her then boyfriend and it had changed to Jeremy Irons which is the one I always will remember.
I'm so glad you're still posting videos! I love your channel as I love all things Epcot from back in the 80s and 90s. I'm hoping to show these videos to my dad as he gets better because our entire family used to go to Disney World when I was growing up. Thank you so much for posting these!
If you could take the current version of this ride (Judi Dench, upgraded animatronics, large computer room scene, etc.) and give it the ending this version had, as well as the Global Neighborhood post show, you'd have something really special.
18:00 OH how I always wanted to see that part when I was a kid. When I first saw this on a Disney Travel Channel special, I was excited to see this. How time flies by quickly, huh? Can't wait for the finale. Expectations are high, as always!
"A new communications supernetwork is being built before our eyes. Spaceship Earth glows with billions of interactions carrying news and information at the very speed of light." I remember getting goosebumps when I heard this line back in 1996 at the age of 12. Still gives me goosebumps to think how far we have come with communication technology in the past two decades.
I missed having Walter Cronkite as the narrator, but I still liked Jeremy Irons narration. Also, I really liked this ending sequence. And I thought the American boy talking to the Japanese girl was cool, too (especially since they required a translator). I did miss the whole, "behold, the Sistine Chapel" line. It felt like that needed a "something". But, overall, this was perhaps the best version of this ride.
13:50 “But will these seemingly infinite communications become a flood of electronic babble? Or will we use this power to usher in a new age of understanding and co-operation” - Every time I watch this, all I can think is Spaceship Earth was a warning and we are living through the consequences of not heeding it.
Thank you so much for posting this, many happy memories. I had forgotten some parts too! I’m excited to see what it will be like after the refurbishment
Walter Cronkite is my total favorite but Jeremey Irons is just as good. Judie Dench is ok but the original is BEST, Walter! Excellent job Martin as usual with all your Tribute videos.
@@spectroman71 actually they removed the city diahorama, but the scenes with the windows and mannequins are covered by a tarp, and the ledge over to your upper left still houses the peppers ghost mannequins just partially covered
Disney seems to think that replacing all of their animatronics and practical effects with screens is the way to go. We haven't been back in awhile...we can watch our iPads at home...
Reminds me of how they did all the Star Wars prequels- all green screen and cgi whereas the originals felt more realistic cause of the practical effects.
Hey Martin I don't know if you've still got any interest in additional footage for possibly another version of this, but I have a few fairly decent clips of the ride that my dad took back in 2000 and 2006, with the 2006 version being nearly the entire ride, at my request. It's not perfect, but it looks great and the lighting is some of the best I've seen in these camcorder recordings, and I feel it could be a valuable contribution to things. Let me know if you'd like these clips and I'll be happy to send them your way.
Thank you very much! I’d like to see those. As you know, especially with this set of re edits, I’ll never say never about updating a video in the future! -Martin
I honestly loved the Jeremy Irons version better than Judi Dench. I was born in May 1997, and can remember bits and pieces of when the ride was good. I also remember the New Global Neighborhood, so my childhood memory is going back to around 2000 - 2003. Now, the end guest face future video is just crappy, half the time it doesn't even cut out your face correctly let alone find one...
They were removed, because the entrance plaza is under going an overhaul. The entrance plaza is almost complete, the thing left for them to do is the lucite fountain.
I love your videos, but hate that there's no voice narration because I can't listen to them at work. 😞 Is there any way of adding a narration to future projects? 😉
I only wish that Disney stayed focused on what EPCOT was supposed to be all about. Innovation ,inspiration, and educational. Disney has definitely lost direction on this great land.
All these audio animation figures are telling mostly white Western Europeans history , and viewpoints. They leave Chinese, Native Americans or African contributions. The Chinese invented paper, Indians and Tibetans had their own plays and operas. The Aztecs had the binary code.
I love the research and information in your videos, but it is maddening having to stop over and over to read the text on the screen and then look at the images. You'd have a hundred thousand subscribers if you would just use an audio narration instead of typo-filled text. You've put so much work into these, please find a narrator!
This was the very first attraction my parents took me to when visiting Disney World for the first time. I wish Epcot was still like this and not starting to cater to younger children. I feel way too old to go to Disney now!
I just want to say thank for putting so much work into this fantastic video! This has become by go-to for when people ask me why I am so fond of Epcot/Disney parks. Just watch this and you'll see!
The only ride ever that has been able to make me cry
My favorite version.
The Irons Version and this video in particular gives me chills every time I watch it. Thank you Martin!
thanks for the great memories, good times, good history report, adventure , excellent. i love it.

It's absolutely criminal that this doesn't have more views. The ride that defined my childhood and the best theming/music in any ride in WDW history.
The "Surprise Tommy, your baby sister is doing just fine." part makes me cry every time I hear it.
It's great Eddie! It's more than we ever hoped for.(Gorgeous music plays as you descend) Oh my god TEARS!! 😭😭😭
That classic Epcot music is the absolute best!
Wish I was born in the 90s man this is better than the new one Scratch That EPCOT was better in the 90s

Still miss the little animated Roman chariot piece.
I hope when they eventually update it they bring that effect back with projection mapping

Also rofl hahaha. That barely works the last few times i went.
Jeremy Irons and that ending really made this one of my favorite dark rides back in the day. Now it just feels like a lifeless and bland shell....
Exactly. Especially the 'stare at an ipad' for the last 5 minutes of the ride. So disappointing.
@@CastawayRJ you pushed one button to choose your ending. That was revolutionary in 1983. Not so much in 2021

Martin Great Video as always!! love the Jeremy Irons ride audio..
This my favorite version of Spaceship Earth! Though having this version narrated by Walter Cronkite would have been interesting, think about it!!
The ending has certainly become emblematic of 2020.

Great job posting this video...thank you Martin for Sharing incredible memories of this ride which is my favorite...
It amazing how many changes have happened through the ages.

Lol, my father always liked the Cronkite version better too. Great choice for narrator
Walter Cronkite wasn't the original either.
I love this Ride It's My Favorite😎👍✌️💙💜🧡💖💗
When Scar was the narrator
“Long live the king”
This is easily the best version of the ride. The current version is a farce.
Jeremy was right. We STILL hunger for information!
Love this video! It brought back so many great memories.
I've been to that version of the ride back in the December of 2003.
18:02 You can still see this part of the ride, partially covered up.
Yep every time I pass I look through those curtains in my mind and "just know" that Glitter City is still there. At least, I hope.
