Just finished replacing all of the gaskets in the exhaust manifold on my Bugeye WRX, was a nice reward getting to see some more subaru content after a successful repair
I appreciate this, I have a 94 2WD Sambar on the way. Got the Supercharger, A/C, auto trans. It's going to be my wifes. She grew up driving right hand drive and wanted a truck.
Hi, new subscriber here living in Tokyo. I left a comment on your original Sambar acquisition video offering to send you an owner’s manual to compliment your vehicle. Please provide me a postal address. Sambar engines are notorious for leaking oil from the head cover gasket. Since you are planning to replace it along with a new timing belt, cam and crank seal, you’ll be in great shape. Cheers!
As interesting as it was to view the all the fixings of this Sambar, I was intrigued by hearing the cicadas 😅 ...a nostalgic feeling for me, since I haven't heard any after leaving Japan.
My 2003 Sambar started to leak just a little oil around the rocker cover at about 130,000 km... We just passed the 200,000 km mark and the leak hasn't gotten any worse. Just make sure to change the oil at short intervals - 3,000 km for me in Japan - and you should be fine as long as there is not much oil loss during that interval! Mine is always close to MAX even after 3,000 km.
They are great little trucks , I have 2 Dias vans with the Supercharged Awd EVCT transmission. One needs a motor which I had a factory remaned long block unit shipped from Japan , the box weighted 110lbs so thats the next project to install . Was going to part it out but was too nice so it getting a motor installed . The rear main seal is the same as the justy of the same vintage when checking the rusting heater lines look under the metal clamps that hold them to the chassis as they will rust thru from crud/dirt getting in between and just stay wet and rot. The carburetor rebuild “ kits” I’ve used on other KEI trucks are mostly gaskets . I’ve ordered the factory gaskets ,needle, seat, accelerator pump and couple of other things for a carb rebuild on sambar for about $100 shipped from Japan . Can’t wait to see more of these videos
I had to subscribe because your truck is very much like my 1994 KV3 sambar van and as you know there is nothing much around the internet on servicing clover 4 en7 engines :) Already learned what a few things are from your video and hope to learn a lot more! Cheers from UK Sambar owner :)
That's a significant punch list but all of the repairs look fairly minor and once they're made, you're probably good for another 25 years! I bought a 1996 4WD Daihatsu Hijet. I looked at a few hundred kei trucks on Japanese auction sites. It seemed that the 25+ year old Sambars had more oil leaks than the other kei trucks and the Hijets had the least. My Hijet arrived with a blown clutch. I was able to source a clutch kit on Amazon and had it in two days, but it was just the clutch disk, pressure plate and throw out bearing. I wanted to replace the rear main oil seal and pilot bearing at the same time and that turned into a six week mess trying to source parts from Japan.
Thank you for the review. Love the idea of a Mini-Truck as an alternative to ATV. Know there are a handful of makes and models (Hijec,t Acty, Scrum, Bongo, Minicab, Carry, Townace). Loved the maintenance/mechanical oversight.
Yes, you're right about that. It is the same layout as the classic Kombi. I suspect that it was done that way in order to keep the wheels on the road and prevent loosing the back end when cornering in the wet or other low traction situations when the vehicle is running empty.
Seems typical for something of its age. Surprisingly easy to access too, considering the tight packaging constraints kei class cars have. Look forward to more in this series!
All my vacuum hoses are hard and partially cracked... I'm not looking forward to it. Also the air filter seems to have been put in in 1999... god bless 😂 for only 55,000 km it seems like its NEVER been worked on.
If you think the Japanese counting system is a bit odd, wait until you see their date system. It's based on the rule of emperors. I did a two hour deep dive into it so I could translate a spark plug chart for kei trucks for the Mini Truck Talk forum.
Mr Subaru in regards to the distributor, in the uk the Suzuki super carry/Bedford rascal/dihatsu hijet use the same distributor & I have seen 1 fitted from a suzuki super carry to the subaru samber vw bus replica. Wasn't 100% on the engine size however after watching your video it had the same clover 4 engine so hopefully this info helps with finding a distributor 😊
What’s sad is that the guy i got my subaru from was filling the oil pan with GEAR oil... I should have negotiated him for a lower price but it is what it is. He really didn’t know about cars and I’m still learning too but wow.. someone thought it was a good idea to use gear oil because he was burning oil. All to know because the oil pan needed to be resealed and the main seal was shot.
Try Amayama in Japan for that battery cover and all spare parts. Most of the parts are genuine. It will state the ones that aren't. They ship worldwide. Lovely set up with the engine, really easy to work on. Would that originally have been a Toyota engine?
I think I saw one of these on an episode of American Pickers. I thought it was really interesting and funny that Subaru actually made both the Sambar and a car like the WRX. On a (off topic) side note: I was planning on doing the head gaskets on my 08 Legacy (EJ253) this summer, but when I parked it in april (not going to work or school right now) I noticed it had pretty severe blow by and I recalled your engine inspection video where you said that could be the piston rings going bad. I don't suppose I'm lucky and that it could be the head gaskets somehow, so I was planning on doing the rings now also. Just recently I went to move it for the first time in a few months and when I moved it gave off a lot of white smoke out the exhaust. I checked the oil and now it was milk shake brown, I'm assuming from oil mixing with the coolant. I check the oil and coolant every few times I drove it and changed the oil frequently and I know it wasn't like that when I parked it, so I was think that was somehow from it sitting, which didnt make much sense to me. I still hear no engine knock though, so I was thinking the bearings and pistons might be still good. I was hesitant to disassemble the short block since this is the first time I have done any major engine work. So I suppose my final question would be: do you think I can just tear everything down to the short block and put new rings on the pistons when I do the head gaskets since I am not hearing any engine knock? Or should I tear down the short block since I already have the heads off and check/replace damaged piston heads and bearings instead of just getting the reseal kit and piston rings? Thanks for any advice and all the videos you make! (Sorry this is so long)
Well at least when you put you're time and money to make it mechanically sound, it's direct replacement. I'll take needs replaced over, I better replace the aftermarket junk before it ruins some OEM parts.

Where is the fuel pump relay located? I have a 90 Subuaru Sambar with the carb motor. It's wasn't running and I traced it back to the fuel pump not working. I checked the voltage on the wires and it's not getting any power. In the manual, it says there is a fuel pump relay on the harness by the cab but I can't find anything.

You’re probably experiencing a thing called torque binding. It’s something you can fix yourself but it’s time consuming. You have to remove the exhaust, driveshaft, and transfer case of the transmission. You have to replaced the burnt out clutch plates and they’re about $130. Yes. I am with you on shipping from Yokohama motors killing a lot of sambars in the states. I recently paid 176.00 for an 8 pound box of parts. It worked out to about a 30% increase in parts. I do not believe they ship by weight. Just add to price of part no matter what part is. But Yokohama parts is the best I have found on OEM parts. I was stopped from buying a windshield when I saw 500.00 for just the windshield. Add at least .30% to that. Then a gasket. Which is why I wanted to buy a windshield was for a new gasket. I will get the chips fixed for 100.00.

Not like there are a few things that happen along the way. So unhappy. Sell it and buy another. I think the oil filter is really all they share.
What app are you using to translate the Japanese to English?

Hey bro what part of Sc are u located im in spartanburg
I owned a 93 RWD and fixed it up and then sold them. My truck only had 19,000 miles. I bought most of my parts from rightdriveparts.com (Canada), minitruckpart.com (California), and for all the other hard to find parts I bought from yokohamamotors.net (Japan). Shipping will kill you.

Where can I get a fuel door catch (cable end)?
Japanparts.com or amayama.com
So.... would a turbo EJ fit back there? Asking for a friend.
With enough time and money, anything is possible.
Are these reliable enough to be a full time camper conversion?

@@MrSubaru1387 good to know, I'm looking at 91 sambar right now w 35k miles for 7900. Didn't know if that was a decent price or not
That symbol is "man", 万. It means 10,000 in Japanese. so 10万km would be 100,000 km
Yup. Google translate for the win on that one. I really need to learn some Kanji.
@@MrSubaru1387 I highly recommend Wanikani for learning Kanji!

Disgusting Fram oil filter. Lmfao!
you have a bad 'lemon", or just one that has the standard things that go wrong.
Who know how they treated the car before you bought it. Maybe hard on the car like a cheap rental. Not like there are a few things that happen along the way. So unhappy. Sell it and buy another. So many people have owned theirs for years and still love every second of owning it.
why complain and complain about it. Sell it , buy something else.
