This truck is Japanese farmer's special.
how do you know?
Been wanting one for a while but my wife is proving difficult to convince. Glad I can live vicariously through your UA-cam
I'll always appreciate Subaru for making these cute kei cars/trucks for the Japanese market. They always make them so darn cute with their designs.
I'm also jelly AF that you own this. Congrats!
Thanks!
With the way you were standing there I was expecting a big "THISSSSS...!" LOL
Greetings from Tokyo and new subscriber to your channel. I’m retired USAF living in Tokyo operating a small independent repair shop working on domestic and foreign autos and trucks for the past 30 years. Your recent acquisition of a Sambar is very interesting to me as we have serviced and owned many mini cars and trucks throughout the years. I have a spare owner’s manual and Subaru vinyl folder that I will mail to you if you would kindly provide a mailing address. Cheers!
When I lived in Okinawa from 1984 to 1987, I owned a 1980 Toyota Town Ace work van with 1.6 liter engine and 4-speed on the column. Had AC and plastic partition to separate the cab from cargo area. Great van. Wish I still had it.
It's winter here in Australia so I'm envious of your heat today! I love the Sambar concept!
Looks like it is in great condition, i’ve spent a few hours looking at overseas auctions trying to find a little buddy like this. I’m definitely looking forward to the next video on it
Yeah, pretty clean. Few things to address, but nothing earthshattering.
I learned of the Sambar from 2stroketurbo who has several old Subaru's both cars and vans.
I would totally get one now for the VW bus conversion. That was so cool!
YEEESSS! I'll definitely have a Sambar or two someday. Hoping to get a van and a firetruck, hahaha.
The firstrucks are awesome.
@@MrSubaru1387 Would be cool if you could put a tiny lift on this and slightly larger tires with some kind of small power bump just to get a higher max speed. 😁
@@802Garage Hayabusa swap? Hehe
@@repairvehicle this is a video... Lol
@@MrSubaru1387 I think he meant my lazy ass, hahaha.
No Supercharger or AC true but low crawling gear and locking Diff are somewhat rare options. You said locking diff button engages the front axle, I believe. 4wd button does that and Locking Diff I believe actually locks the rear diff.
Awesome! I've wanted one for a long time.
That things frickin' awesome! It's like the lil Red Express' distant cousin. Very cool little truck
"We'll get to servicing and mechanics of this vehicle in later videos..." sweeet
So awesome. I was in Japan last winter and loved these vehicles.
Shifter reminds me of the old loyale subaru sedans and wagons of the late 80s and early 90s.
Yup!
Sweet!! There are quite a few of those up here in Canada, so I've been tempted to snag one myself. I very much look forward to seeing more from you about the mechanicals of it!
'Murican's: "Thats nawt a trugh!!!"
Haha. Oh the looks I've gotten already just driving it.
One of the weekpoints of Sambar is that the body can has cracks around the door hinges. The doors might fall off while driving.
this is the greatest hipster accessory i've ever seen
local artisan coffee shop has one lol
Wow....Actually drove those during my time in Japanese. Very bare bones little truck and stick shift. Forgot about the engine in the back....haha. Took a little getting used to the stick on the left. Utility built and yes a very small motor. We had the wagon but only drove the truck. You see the box trucks all over Japan specially in Tokyo for the tight streets. Very cool.
@Barry Barry yeahhh military time. Fun times all around 👍🏻😁😎😎🇺🇸
Woo hoo! Love these wee things. They go for 6-10K NZD here in New Zealand, but plenty of em around. I used to drive one daily at a hotel I used to work at a decade ago, friggen thrashed it! Make those 660cc's work for ya! That things been loved, previoust owner even did some bed liner in the back!
Off and on I've been thinking about getting one of these little trucks. If I do, now I'll be able to blame you for the inspiration.
Thanks! 😜
Hey, at least you'll have a video repair guide to keep it going, soon. Haha.
I had the 1994 Sambar van. Also clover 4 engine.
The top speed I got it to was 115 KM/h AC off, on flat, no cargo or passanger, calm winds. Sounded like I was going to blow the engine to prices though.
You can get 13inch wheels on it if you want as well.
The EN07 is the engine for the Kei vehicle line for Subaru that year. With difrent variants ranging from Carb naturally aspirated, to super charged to Fuel injection.
Good pick with the rear mounted engine! Just get the revs up pop it in to first and watch the nose goo way up!
That is a great truck! Too bad USA manufacturers cannot understand that small practical trucks are still wanted & even preferred over the gargantuan "luxury" heaps that they puke out.
@Barry Barry I mean, you're not wrong, but you're wrong.
There's a big segment of people who'd eat little trucks like this up, especially in smallish to medium sized cities where space is a premium and you just need a hauler. Especially the box truck version.
@Barry Barry down here in the REAL WORLD we want something like this !! Personally I'd like it with just a little heavier payload. Don't need something bigger maybe just a little sturdier. Love the size!!
You can go buy a base model Ranger with no options... but nobody else will. There's a reason the pickup truck market has become what it currently is, the majority of buyers want something nice and spacious.
@Barry Barry We buy big cars because gas here is cheap...
I can't wait to see more content on this little truck. Pretty cool.👍
Thanks!
No AC. No sale. I am a few hundred miles south of you Mr. Subaru. AC is a requirement around here.
That said, I love the truck. Extremely cool.😎
The 2x60 A/C along with the floor vents makes it very bearable. That said, I'm feverishly looking for a way to retrofit a/c to it. 😂 😂 😂
When you showed the van I was like, I want!!!
Additional mention of the size: Kei vehicles have cheaper registration and other various benefits when operating in Japan. Really the main reason for this class of very weird and cool vehicles to exist in the first place.
I totally brain farted over Kei and explaining them.
Hello from Greer SC! Loving your channel!
Hey South Carolina neighbor. 🖐🏻
Sambar is a south Indian curry as well ... Never knew that a Subaru Sambar existed :D
In my country, they're called multicabs. Surplus from Japan. Very hardworking tiny truck. Ours was Suzuki 4x4 model. Used in carrying farm products
That's pretty neat. It looks like it would be handy, and interesting to work on.
When I was in Japan and Korea this style was the typical light duty truch. The odd thing was they had different size tires from to back. Front tires were large diameter singles, rears were small duels. I imagine that meant TWO spares...
Neat little trucks though.
install a truck nuts it will help with oversteer lol
Hahaha
Lol
the Subaru Sambar is the TOP DOG in the mini truck world. Period !
I was stationed at Misawa Air Base Japan (USAF) from Sep 1984 - Sep 1988. During my time there these little trucks were all over the base and surrounding area. They even had some Suzuki models that were 2-stroke! They were always so fun to drive. Good luck with yours!
Thanks!
My daughter has a 1993 Sambar with the VW van conversion kit. I just replaced the leaking cam shaft seal. It was a relatively easy engine to work on. She has an air conditioner in her Sambar but its not working right now. We also bought the Sambar mechanics book and parts book for it. Those are nice to have. Good luck with your Sambar. Enjoy.
Has it already been converted from R12? Yeah, they're fairly easy to get at.
I am not sure I haven’t looked into it yet. My daughter said the AC was working when she bought it last year and now it just blows hot air. She isn’t too concerned since we live in an area where she doesn’t need the AC often.
Owens Corning has a manufacturing plant in Newark, OH that has a small fleet of trucks very similar to this, but they're made by Mitsubishi and they're actually left hand drive. They're not registered to drive on the street so they never leave company property. They're used by both the maintenance and security departments and needed because the plant's grounds are over 500 acres. You'll see them on the grounds and in the warehouses and factory buildings, (anywhere you might see a forklift). I always thought they were fascinating little trucks and wished I could get one and register it to drive on the street.
Been looking at these for awhile, we have a local beer brewery just down the road from where I work (mackinon brothers brewery in Kingston Ontario) they use sambars with a refrigeration unit on the back for their delivery vehicles, it's super cool. And I'm glad you mentioned head room as a tall person. I'm 6'6" and I was kinda worried about Trying to get one just to find out I'm too tall. That happened to me with another car I really wanted, the original Mazda mx-5, got to test drive one just to find out I can't fit in it with the roof up lol.
Awesome video and I hope to see many more sambar videos
This is great, I want all the content about this
love the truck, now I want one!
Awesome, it's a good vehicle! I have the van and lately, in Japan, lot of people are using to make little motorhomes.
I've been wanting to find one of these. Would be a lot of fun to lift and take up in the mountains.
Congrats this thing is sick! I was looking at either one of these or a Honda Acty something about kei pickup trucks just look so good
I totally agree!
so sick... can't wait to watch content on these... i want one hella bad
I’d love to get the Subaru Brat but I’d gladly take this too, awesome little wagon.
Awesome! So versatile.. Would be nice to have its container too.
For a '94 looks like it's in fantastic condition. The Japanese take such good care of their vehicles..
They really do. 👍🏻
Greetings from Columbia, SC. It's cool to see this neat little vehicle. It's also interesting that you got the truck through Pacific Coast Auto, seeing that they have a channel here on UA-cam. Keep up the good work.
I talked to the importer there in Irmo, SC, but they didn't have any Sambars in stock.
Awesome! I'm looking forward to your projects!
Awesome! Thank you!
Dude, i can feel your excitement through the screen! Thank you for all your tutorials!
Nice little truck. I like things simple like that. Now I have to see if I can register one in Florida, lol.
Honest little vehicle for sure.
I think Florida is actually one of the easiest places to do so.
@@802Garage from what I see it's only legal on streets with a speed limit of 35 mph or less.
Must be rated as an LSV there, or low speed vehicle. Same thing as a golf cart or road legalized ATV/UTV.
@@MrSubaru1387 it is.
Great score! I love these & wish they were sold here & wish you could get a normal registration instead of limited use. I also love that farm truck you already have as seen in the background @ 08:26. 👍🏾 Looking forward to your adventures with this one
Mine is not restricted. I just put a farm tag on it for taxes, rather than a normal plate.
I worked for a guy in the eighties who had a few of these but Honda and Suzuki.
One of them had a mid engine layout, very cool
Yeah, Honda, Subaru, Mazda, Suzuki, Isuzu, Daihatsu, and several others make very similar little Kei trucks.
Congratulations on your first JDM Samber!
Thank you!
I don’t live anywhere near a farm but I want one of these neat kei trucks lol 😂
Congrats 👍👏 nice pickup
Thanks!
I had a 1993 Toyota 4x4 truck with the work truck package. The drivers seat was gray vinyl and the other seats were cloth. Reminds me a little of what you’ve got there.
Lots of fun. Thanks.
It is called farmers Porsche. Rear engine, rear wheel drive. In fact, it goes like one. People race these.
I live in CANADA and there is a guy in my city with one. I never seen one before. Suzuki is another one I seen👍
Fantastic! Super cool little truck!
Thank you!
Love this!
Cool little truck! You really do love Subaru's.
Thanks!
This is exactly what I need!!
Really cool little truck! 👍
Thanks 👍
I saw a toy matchbox of these the other day at target. Kinda cool seeing the real thing.
I've got it. Haha.
Awesome truck, like to get one ,I want to see the mechanical end n repair end also...interesting little truck...
Great video! It might be worth mentioning that various states have different laws for the use of KEI cars. Some states allow them for farm use, others allow usage on state roads and/or highways etc. As far as I am aware, I'm unsure about Interstate highway usage.
hey, at least its a manual trans, i love these because of the manual trans
Absolutely 100% positively kick ass. Well done my friend, I had a feeling you were going to go for it. Enjoy and it treat it right. I couldn't have a better owner! If you ever decide it needs a new home, contact me :) Laid off right now due to the plandemic but hopefully that will change in the near future. Like I said prior, there are a few of these running around on Long Island. The shop that imports them is not far from me. I see these out in front with for sales signs all the time, however, not sure if subaru or the honda variants or both or some other manufacturer. They are definitely moving them. Has the look of a forward control vehicle but mini :)
I've got a line already forming up for buying rights. Lol
Well it was worth me giving it a shot, the place that sells these is a hop skip and away, I might stop by and see what these are running for. How about insurance, how do you insure these? I would love to take one on one of my camping trips to the catskills :)
My agent didn't have much trouble. Comp and liability. Couldn't get full coverage with Collison due to the age and nature of it being a non US market vehicle.
@@MrSubaru1387 Thanks for the info, once I get down there and find out, I'll post up if they sells these and what they go for.
I love it 😎
There is a large importer in New Jersey for anyone looking.I think these little trucks have side by sides beat in so many areas, cant wait for more videos! :)
Definitely. Fully enclosed, wipers, heat and a/c, and road legal in a lot of states.
Year 31 is 2019 in the Emperor’s calendar.
The name of the era is Heisei, so it was Heisei 31. The new era is called Reiwa when the new emperor took over last year
Really cool.
I'm eagerly anticipating your mechanical review. My mom is approaching retirement and she dreads regular-sized cars but will still need to move around.
I'm seriously considering the Subaru Stella which is on a similar platform to the Sambar. Depending on what I learn in your next Sambar video, I may just go ahead with the purchase.
Assuming that you're in the USA, an import has to be 25+ to be legal. The oldest Stella is a 2006, so if you plan to get her something, a 94/95 Sambar Dias II van is the newest legal import you could get her.
@@MrSubaru1387 I'm in Jamaica, actually. Our restrictions on imports are waaaay shorter (regular passenger vehicle age being a maximum of 6 years-old for imports). There is a popular site Jamaicans use to buy cars directly from Japan and it lists the Stella up to as recently as 2018.
Perhaps that is misinformation?
Ah. Good to know. Yeah, different rules that the US. The Stella was/is made 2006-current model years.
I have a trucking company that I live close by too and they occasionally have Sambars or the daihatsu mini truck. Super cool cars and I would love to have one as a little hauler
Thats pretty cool 😎 👍 open up the exhaust so it makes some noise lol
Awesome Truck Mr Subaru! You will figure something out about AC! I’ll be looking for this sweet truck around town! RT
This is the Sardine Machine from Cruisn' World! Haha
One of these would be great as a first car. But it would be a pain to get one. And high schoolers don’t like things that aren’t stylish so getting made fun of for having a great car won’t be great. But it seems super handy to have.
My college bought 2 of these used as landscaping vehicles, except Honda versions. It's interesting how the bodies look very similar.
Honda Acty. Yeah, most Kei trucks are very similar in shape.
I have the VW conversion van version KV3 but would love the truck also!
What a fun project...
Sweet ride
Thanks!
Great little truck👍 I got a Honda kei van a few months ago and converted it to a work van and really enjoy it. I like how smart and efficiently the kei trucks and vans are designed. The 31 on the windshield sticker is actually the year (Heisei 31) which is 2019 on our calendar. I have the same sticker on my van and did some research since I was confused by the 31 number. I'm actually in the process of shooting an episode right now for my channel about my kei van and the conversion I did on it. Looking forward to seeing more videos about your Sambar.
Nice. I'll check out your channel.
This Heisei 31 sticker with the month as 5 is gonna be super rare, because the Heisei era officially ended on April 30, 2019. This should have been marked with a new Reiwa 1(It's the imperial era. A new emperor took the throne on May 1, so it gets a new name). I can't make out all of the characters on the sticker, but the first 2 〈点検〉means inspection (tenken).
Very cool!
Thanks!
Sweet Sambar!
Thanks!
Just in case, the 2020 model you talk about is an OEM trcuk by Daihatsu. Subaru stopped making their own mini trcuks in 2012. A lot of Japanese people lamented back then.
17:55 Green Emblem is 「JA」
『Japan Agricultural Cooperatives』 version SAMBAR. 「営農サンバー」とも言います。From JAPAN.
Thanks!
That's awesome. I'm jealous.
Thanks!
Nice Little truck I need one for collecting firewood in tight trails if I’m not making my own trail. May be just a woods runner but it sure beats carrying a 5 foot locust log out of the woods on your shoulder, it tends to be painful after a few of those trips. If you find another one you want more, hit me up and I may take the trip from NY to SC to buy it off ya, otherwise best of luck with it and I’ll be looking for the next one you put out on this!
Will do. 👍🏻 Thanks!
local used subaru dealer has one all tricked out in rally livery but a van body pretty cool. A neighbhor has a litle suzuki carry
i love that cute little truck! I hope to see more content on this. Congrats Mr. Subaru! BTW is it hard to drive on the right side? what about your left hand doing the shift gears is it uncomfortable? can you share some of your driving experience?
Picked it up immediately. Although, I am mostly ambidextrous.
You should vinyl wrap this with a cartoon of you on the door and Mr. Subaru on the bed gates or magnetic signs if you didn’t want to wrap.
Man I want one of these. Guy down the street from me sells a ton of them. Want to start a mobile mechanic business
I get mine tomorrow! So excited!
Nice! What year/options?
@@MrSubaru1387 1990 n/a base model haha. 5 speed and 4x4, no dump bed or a/c. Only 55,000 km on it.
Nice! Good price?
@@MrSubaru1387 all in (import and all) about 4k. Truck was 2300
Very nice. Beat me out by a grand.
Think I’m buying this instead of blowing money on a van👀
That thing is SWEET!
Thanks!
@@MrSubaru1387 how readily available are parts? I saw a few locals driving mini trucks down on Ocracoke last week and I got to wondering.
There are several businesses that import parts and support these vehicles. Parts are also available on Amazon Japan to order and import.
@@MrSubaru1387 thanks 👍
Are you going to a mechanical tour of the transmission, transfer case, and differentials?
I love what I see in your videos, thanks.
Yes. Unfortunately been waiting on parts since Aug 11th....🙄 🙄 🙄
only mr Subaru can make me want to get a sambar haha
THATS THE SAME DUMB DREAM I HAVE....A SUZUKI ONE AND MADE IT BOZUKUUUU whit hentai stikers, a domo and pikachu tail as exaust XD
