      Yeah, the ruts would be my biggest concern as well. I live in the North East (Boston) so I deal with snow mostly. We drove down to OBX this past summer, Suburu Legacy. We rented a Jeep from OBX Dodge and drove up to the 4X4 beaches in Corolla, I was amazed at how deep the ruts can be peak season.

    ive seen people say 4WD is perfectly OK but AWD is a hard No but if you have locking diffs like on my kia sorento its basically the same as 4WD regarding traction. I would not recommend AWD without locking diffs because with open diffs if just one tire is stuck or is in a hole and spins freely your basically losing all traction on 3 other wheels. but if you have locking diffs, from there its all about the tires, ground clearance, and more importantly your skills.
    my friend goes surfing in assateague withe a range rover evoque all the time. awd and only one more inch of ground clearance and same weight but he always stops to air down tires and never got stuck, but he's always going to the same beach. shirter wheelbase would help off road but in a flat beach it's not going to matter that much. I know some peiple get stuck even with bro trucks so take my advice with a grain of SAND...
    basic skills would be trying to keep constant speed, stay sharp looking fornsoft sand, stay where its flat, avoid off camber that could send you sideways, only stop/maneuver/u turn where the sand seems the most compact, dont try to power through the sand unless everything else has failed

      @sexiewasd only the manuals are 50/50 the autos have been 60/40 for quite some time. engineering explained has a great video on this.
      with the manuals, its also possible to buy a better center diff, which locks up with greater force off a smaller RPM difference, similar to their old rally diff. 20kg of force instead of 4kg or something like that. so the wheels lock up faster.
      you can also get a rear auto locker in subaru's, at least in the R170 diff.

    AWD SUVs are fine as long as you tick these boxes -
    [✓] air pressure in tyres down
    [✓] all terrain tyres
    [✓] gas it and don't stop
    [✓] have recovery gear just incase.

      We definitely don't discourage AWD and Edward drives an AWD Subaru himself. It used to be a common practice to "blatantly say no", However, if you watch the video you'll see that isn't what we're saying.

    • @DG-ou8hx
      @DG-ou8hx Рік тому

      Clearly you have never been there. It's not a neighborhood per say. People may pull you out, tow trucks will for a couple hundred given the circumstances. Gas it in sand is bad advice, momentum in sand is better wording. The rest is good advice. AWD can work given the right conditions...which change at that location by the mile. The soft stuff is deep and many an AWD high centers and rips all the plastic off the bottom half of the car during a recovery. Tire pressure is big, Low pro tires get minimal benefit from air down, run flats get no benefit.

      @@devarmont87 I suppose not. But the video is about a specific place and the people asking for information are asking advise for that specific location. Your comment is good and knowledgeable except maybe there is a dialect issue with some of your suggestions that don't apply or are lost on the audience. You say gas it...that will bog a vehicle down out there in the deep sand, specifically if it starts to lose momentum...maintain momentum is the way people in the US would say what I think you mean. Telling someone in the US to gas means to stomp the pedal to the floor. Speaking of a neighborhood in an inflammatory way to say people shouldn't go there if the neighborhood doesn't help. Well, while there are houses out there, that doesn't really apply. The housing is separated by the dunes and the population during tourist season is largely tourist, and largly day visitors. The other beach goers might help, but the word neighborhood doesn't apply. I think it's just your vernacular. But none the less slightly misleading to those intent on visiting. So, tranquillo my friend. You seem relatively knowledgeable and had a good comment, albeit not from the area.

    I wouldn't take a Subaru in any deep sand. This is not very deep sand.

    Don’t need to reduce tire pressure on a Subaru.

    • @twiddyobx
      @twiddyobx  3 роки тому

      We strongly encourage every driver to reduce their tire pressure, no matter what they drive. It’s much better for the vehicle as well as the beach.

    2022 Honda passport Trailsport?

    • @twiddyobx
      @twiddyobx  Рік тому

      Air down to 15-18psi. and it will drive fine. We see the standard Passports fairly often and I'd only imagine the Trailsport would be set up better!

    I have several very capable 4x4 vehicles, that would eat up all of that sand with ease. That is the reason that I would Never take a vehicle on the beach unless for livesaving reasons

    Will a 2021 Cadillac Xt6 be able to navigate on the beach?

    • @twiddyobx
      @twiddyobx  3 роки тому

      Hi Jill, We just looked it up and the XT6 has about an inch less ground clearance than we recommend so we would advise against it. We typically prefer 4x4 or AWD vehicles with at least 7.5 inches of Ground Clearance.

    Hey what is your opinion on the 3rd gen rav4?

    • @twiddyobx
      @twiddyobx  7 років тому

      It's an all-wheel-drive system and it works well. They're just a bit lower to the ground when loaded down heavy so avoid the really deep tracks as much as possible. Traveling at low-tide should make that even easier. Make sure to air down, too!

    How about a 2014 honda crv?

    • @twiddyobx
      @twiddyobx  Рік тому

      Hi Stan, the 2014 model came with 6.7 inches of ground clearance which is below the 7.5 inches that we recommend. That being said, we do see those vehicles on the beach, and with the air pressure down to 15psi., they will navigate the beach but you'll need to use extra caution as it will drag the bottom much more than other vehicles.
