Hi, I just did a "no dig border tree ring" like you shown in the video, thank you very much for sharing the how to, I got the Vigoro edging from Home Depot same with the fast set post concrete mix, I did it for my little sister and she just loves it! I let her doing the easy part which is spraying the concrete with water 8-)

@@ez6315 If my memory serves me well, I got 2 bags of Quikrete Fence and Post fast setting about $8.50 bag of 30kg, 26 stone at $2 each, No dig Edger Vigoro at Home Depot for $38 for 60feet, because the shorter one was out-of-stock. To estimate the number of stone needed, you need to do a little math, take the radius of the circle, i.e. the center point to where you want the circle is, so circumference=2 x pi where pi can be 3.14 , measure the stone length, take circumference/stone-lenght you have approx amount of stone needed, I add extra one just for security. I also got extra long landscaping nails, I think I bought 10 about 0.90 each I think.
Anyhow, thanks to @maxpatch67, stone edger can never be so easy and fun to do.

using a string tied to a can of marking spray paint, you can make a circle without eyeballing it. Measure the string from the trunk out to where you want the edging to be. the just walk around the tree

Just to let you know, this video is still having an impact. I live in northern Illinois and just today installed a ring. (I mean, I finished like an hour ago!) Great results. I followed all of your directions, including using cardboard as a weed barrier. I've lived in this house for nearly 18 years and from the day I moved in wanted to do something with the sloppy area under the frontyard tree, but never knew just what to do. I came across your video about three weeks ago and thought, THAT'S what I want to do. I'm knocked out by the finished look. Thanks for the tips!

This video saved my life and thousand of dollars. I had to edge my tree on a long distance as the roots were getting out and I had to hide. There was no way to dig and cut the roots I really didn’t know what to do for so long. Thanks for showing the way

Be very very careful not to cover the root flare or burry the surface roots too deeply. The trees grow roots like that for a reason. They need to breath.

I've been watching many videos, and a few showed how to get a perfect circle by tying a loose rope around the tree trunk down low and deciding on your circumference. Get a can of spray paint and hold the rope end and walk around the tree while spraying the paint to mark the area. You'll get a perfect circle.

Thank you for the great tutorial. I love the fact that there’s no digging involved. What happens when the block off brick doesn’t fit on the exact circle of the bed? Also is it possible to use the same method for a second level wall? Thanks!
You have two options for the odd sized gap. One is to adjust the border size so it fit perfectly and the other is to customize one block to the right size by chiseling it down or just hammering it down to size...use eye protection.

Looks good but I just see myself years down the road saying, "why the hell did I use concrete?", when I'm trying to remove it because the roots are making it uneven.
A large tree nearby could do that, but bushes or small trees are not a problem. You might want to use a different border.
To be fair if you get several years out of it it is a win

I would go with the 2.2". I think the Vigoro that I like to use is around 2" and I think that's just right so that's why I'd go with the 2.2" Dimex. Have a great day!
What if the area is not flat?
No problem. You can build this on a slope. Using the plastic edge as your guide, angle the cement the way you want so the angle of the landscaping blocks is not quite as steep as your slope. Please let me know if I can help you any more.

I dunno, Ricardo...I don't think I'd use this technique if I wanted a short wall. I'd advise using some type of levelling method I believe.

I have a question, I’m new into landscaping/gardening. I have a small tree in the middle of a 6ftby6ft area, mostly is surrounded by grass, I’m planning on doing something like this, smaller of course, but should I get rid off the grass and weeds around the tree, prep the ground with fabric and then toss the mulch on top or will it be ok just to cover whatever grass and weeds with mulch? I’m just worried the grass/weeds will start to come up through the mulch bed?

Yes, you can use any rock, brick, block of your choice that you think looks good. At the end, use eye protection and use a hammer to shape the last block to the right length. You can whack away at it with the hammer or use a masonry chisel. You could also adjust the border shape a little to get the blocks to fit perfectly instead.
Hi, I really like your video and it seems very possible for me to do by myself ... however, can I do this for an uneven surface too?
Yes. When you nail the plastic border down to the ground, you can level it out quite a bit by not putting the spikes in the low spots. So the edge will be pretty smooth and straight compared to your lumpy ground. If there is a huge dip or lump in the ground, then you could use your shovel and dirt to fix those bigger problems. If you don't mind your border curving around along the natural flow of the ground, then you can go ahead and just start the process as shown in the video.
Love this video! What's the best way work around large roots that poke out above ground?
You have different options. You could build the ring large enough so the roots aren't a problem. If that is feesible, then you could carefully choose a size where roots are not an issue all the way around. Another option is to fill in dirt around the area and build it up to the level of the roots so the border is built right on top of them. If you do this, fan out the dirt over a large area so there is not just a "lump" in the border. I hope this helps. Ler me know if you need anything else, Dennis.
It's been one year since installed. I'm curious to see how it's holding up. I want to do this to all my flower beds (like around entire foundation plantings) but I have moles in my yard and I wonder how much damage they would do digging under this.
Ya, this border is in Lexington, Kentucky and it is in perfect condition. It is designed to last many years with this technique. I don't know of any borders that will stop moles, unfortunately. I absolutely love this, and I have a question, if it’s alright. Once I’ve set my concrete, what about the grasses or other weeds that might be within the circle? When you did your project, since this is a no-dig project, did you lay down any landscape fabric, or did you spray some kind of grass/weed killer?

I love your idea. Would it be possible to use dried felled trees that my husband cuts into small logs instead of the pavers?
You can certainly do that, but it would be a totally different technique and style. You would not need any of thee materials. Complications with your idea would be unevenness, not staying in place, and rotting over time. If you have a real rustic area, then this might look good, but if you have more formal landscaping, you wouldn't like it so much so it kind of just depends. I hope this helps, Marilee.

It might work, but I wouldn't recommend it. This is great for what it is, but going higher adds quite a bit of difficulty and needed skill in using traditional mortar between the layers.
Would the concrete hold up to the freeze & thaw cycles of Western Pa. winters?I'm worried about the ground freezing & lifting & cracking the concrete base under the blocks.
Mike, this is an excellent question and one that I would be interested in knowing too if I lived up there. Here is what I know. On my older video of this technique, I had people from several years ago, testify as to how happy they were with this border after multiple winters and these people lived in New England, Chicago, and Canada. That being said, I don't have personal experience building them up there and I do understand your concern.

So, I've never done this before and moved into a house that desperately needs this on several trees.
How do I make sure I'm getting the correct amount of blocks? And how do I make sure when doing the circle that all blocks will fit without a gap? Please and thank you 💞
Mandy, figure that for each foot of border, you need one block and then just add them up. Just get 3 or 4 extra because its no fun being short and not able to get the work done. That gap is a challenge so you can take care of that by customizing how the last few fit in there by leaving little gaps in them to finish right or you can use a hammer, masonry chisel, and hand and eye protection and just hammer away at one block to make it fit in perfectly at the end with all the spaces tight together. Its not real difficult and kind of fun to hammer away at a cement block...you choose, but use eye and hand protection. I hope this helps.
What should I do if I have a couple of big tree roots that have surfaced so that it makes it difficult to put a border?
The border in this video is pretty big. Can you make yours larger than where your roots are? If not, then that's a problem.
What would you recommend using to also add a cap along the top of the border?

Hi I loved your video of no dig border..would you have any knowledge or idea on laying pavers without all that digging?
I don't do multiple layers because it is not leveled and could cause problem and I don't think it looks as good....however some viewers have done it and it seems to have worked great for them using landscaping block adhesive between the layers. Anything else I can help you with?

I really like this. How do you remove the border as the tree grows and you need to change the size of the ring over the years?
This border is considered to be permanent, so build it large(like the example in the video) and it will never need replaced.

You can, but you will lose some of the main advantages of this border technique which are height(to make it stand out and appear more sculptural), strength/stability, and it goes a long a way as a weed barrier for aggressive weeds and grass like Bermuda Grass that we have here in Nashville.

My pleasure, Hema. I'd suggest not building this border in your situation. Just use another more temporary technique. If you take the concrete out of this technique, you really lose major benefits it provides and then its not anything special any more. I hope this helps. Have a great day!
Excellent video tutorial, definitely going to try it out, but I had one concern. If I didn't want the black rubber ring and I attach it to the ground in reverse, to remove after the concrete cures, wouldn't that leave a visible concrete ring above the grass, the same height as the black rubber ring, that the pavers sit on?
Yes, if you don't have the black plastic edge there, then the cement edge would be there. Cement does dull pretty quickly over time so it would not stand out at all over time. It works quite well to make it this way when attaching the plastic edge to the ground in reverse to make it removable. To make this easier, use the plastic spikes that come in bags and cut them in half with some pruning snippers. This makes them easily removable with pulling up your plastic edge from the ground.
I have watched a few of these videos and am still looking for the best way to handled undulations up to 6". I know I could just follow the contours of the soil but I think it looks "cleaner" for the top of the ring to cut a flat plane. Any thoughts or opinions would be warmly appreciated.
I love this idea but what about the grass/weeds coming up from the mulch. Do we need a layer of tarp down?

Does the bottom part of the block get wet in this method? Im worried that the under side of the block will stay dry and hence wont stick
Yes. The dry mix acts like a sponge and the water will absorb under there. When you see me spraying the blocks, the water is dripping down the sides and soaking the mix under there. If you are unsure, just spray it longer with the mist until you are sure.

I want to do this around a tree that is pretty big. I measured out quite a bit but still have some roots extending over what I measured. How far out should I go from the root ending? Thank you.
Maria, my suggestion is that if you go out 5 or 6 feet from the trunk and there are still roots out there further beyond that then for those far out roots that are exposed, get some topsoil(not the stuff in bags from the store) and shovel it onto the ground around the roots and rake it around to level it nicely. You can make this circle as big as you want, but for looks and practicality, maybe 6 feet out from the trunk is reasonable. What do you think? Maybe a little bigger than that?
I had the same issue and cut the roots and removed them. This didn't affect the tree at all
I'm considering using this as a retaining wall for mulch beds. Would the concrete alone keep it in place without the edging kit?
The Vigoro edging creates a form for the concrete. If you can figure out another way to get around that then go for it. The concrete is at the core of this technique's success so it's to you if you want to adapt it in some way....do you have an idea for it??
