@@AricBolf oh I didn’t realise that. When I see fences in American homes I always think of how pretty a white picket fence is. In the uk we tend to paint our fences yearly so they look nice all year round. I guess it’s individual preference I guess. Will use the tip for the flower beds thou.

I believe in a vlog before they said that they like the fence the way it is… it gives the yard character and personality. Personally, even though I think it would increase the value of their home, I think they should leave it. I like the character too. Especially since the yard is SO beautiful. A little character never hurt 🥰🥰
Instead of a shovel I tie the strap to a paint can. Do a quick circle then go from there.

My husband just did our tree rings; I wish I had watched this first because it would have saved him the headache of making the circle perfect by using the rope trick! It will be a next years trick for sure!
That is a great tip about the rope. Thank you, sir ♥ I always struggle with rope not turning properly :) To deal with the weeds, I measure inside the ring, put together cardboards, staple them together, cut this circle out of cardboards, cut tree diameter out of center of circle, wrap circle in landscape fabric, lay circle around the tree, pin down with very few small landscape staples. The more and thicker the staples, the more and thicker the weeds growing through their holes. Then cover top with mulch. In 2-3 years even with this setup most aggressive weeds will come back, but at least I only have to do it every few years :) I found that the more reliable and long lasting way is to plant dense decorative ground cover inside the circle, which will smother the weeds. How do you treat your trees against fungus, sir? These things underneath there sure looked interesting :)
I think your next task should be sanding and painting that fence in your back yard :)
We are waiting to change to fence to something our neighbors will agree on....
@@TodaysTask you have the "back" side of the fence and your neighbors have the "front" side of the fence. I am assuming you don't want that in your new fence. You can make one board your side and one board neighbors side and repeat. This way you will have uniform look on both sides. It also looks really good and unique.
@@ukomdesign We call that a Good Neighbor fence. A Good neighbor will split the cost with you when it's time to repair it. If it alternates no one can say "That's not my fence and it's not my expense ". Assuming that it actuality is a shared fence.

Weeding is much easier if you water the surface well, wait a half hour, and weeds slip out much easier. No tools needed and no root damage to the tree.

Looks great. I would add mulch to suppress weeds and grass from coming back. Also, it helps keep the tree hydrated. 🌳

Great Video, and I Loved the tip about using the rope/strap to cut the perfect ring! The only thing I do that is different, I add Tree Bark Mulch on top of the dirt. I just like that look, so it's totally up to you if you want to add to it.

Im looking at this video because if you ask me the ground around the trees im working with is probably 2 times harder but nonetheless seeing you so efortlessly dig up the soil gave me an idea, maybe I should pour some water on it beforehand, nonetheless cool video.

to in the future, how to prevent weed/grass growing in the circle?
I put lawn clippings in my perfect circle...its mulch, (less waste) turns into yellow carpet, great color contrast...and worm incubator, plus no weeds.
You make it look so easy! I'm going to try the rope and shovel trick so I get a perfect circle around my tree! I also have one of those big fork shovels like you (I don't remember what it's called) that I inherited from my parents belongings. Now I know what it's purpose is. Thank you!
The rope works! I just put stones where the circle will be, but didn’t use the pitchfork (I think that’s what you mean.)
The trick with the tree -shovel- radius - Brilliant! What if the roots of your trees are starting to come up in the inside of the circle that you are preparing?
Fill in the circle with some mulch.

Great tip. Last week I distributed 10 yards of dirt by wheelbarrow in my yard. It went better when I filled 2 wheelbarrows at a time. Total drudgery but the yard looks great.

I have an old sugar maple in my front yard. I did a tree ring on mine. Cats love pooping in the mulch. I changed it up and planted ground covers in the mulch. I have 3 types of sedum, superbells, and Irish moss growing around it now. I still have that 4" of mulch to the outside to prevent weedeater damage. I have to water the area occasionally. The thick side limbs block the rain off near the trunk. 🌾🌿🍀

The trunk is irregular, but I keeping the tension on the rope it will come out pretty darn perfect.

As I watched your last "GUYS" video, all I could think of was that you were going to end up with some major problems. I ached sitting here watching you. Your back takes a beating on your four-wheeler even when you stand up. I love those videos, but hate that you are putting yourself in such danger. I fear that by the time you are 45-50 (if not before), you will be an invalid. Just saying. I know an accident caused the problems to begin with, but you are too young to have these kinds of problems.
Little timbit from me. Careful shaking dirt from certain weeds. They can spread even more seeds smaller than the naked eye can tell. Causing even bigger problems.

Thank you... Why do you remove the grass around of tree? I've a few trees and covered by grass, I think it looks natural..
It doesn't serve any purpose other than a clean look and I don't have to hit the tree with the edger. My other trees have grass up against them.
Some good ideas. Thanks. FWIW, I made a screed out of 1/2" metal fabric and 2 x 4s to remove dirt from dug-up grass.
I rigged up a stranded cable years ago to do the same thing. My neighbors must have thought I was wacko...but I have perfect circles. Because I have two trees in a row, it allowed me to lock the length in place so both matched.

Looks nice! So I started doing this for my front tree, with a 6 feet ring radius and I had to stop because my husband almost had a heart attack and said I will kill the tree. I highly doubt it, it is a 20 year old tree It should be fine. I got a deep 10 inch grass barrier to dig around it, so I digged out about 4 inches deep, and yes I did cut some roots but I think it will be fine.
A 20 year old tree has roots that are way longer than a 12ft circle and deeper than 4 inches
I’ve replaced all my grass with dandelions.
What about tree roots that are exposed?
Just a thought and correct me if it’s a terrible idea the grass cutting electric tool or petrol for straight edges if you tied this to the rope you would have the same job just 10x faster

It’s true that the unpainted fence made me wonder …
I do the same. I use a 1 X 2 boaard or a shovel handle and every 6 inches I spray a dot of orange marker at the length I need then connect the dots. Then I use a pick ax and pick to the edge either into the edge or along the edge.It makes for a crisp edge. Sometimes I pick it deep along the edge for more mulch. Sometimes when I'm in a urry I just eyeball it and it comes out almost as perfect. You can aways go back and round out a flat spot. If it's 90% accurate, no one will ever notice from afar. THUMBS UP!!!

Great video! I stopped it twice to make comm! Lol. Finally got to the end. The wide shot at the end was great. I see a lot of back yards that are either totally bare, or so junked up with plants that there is no room for non gardening hobbies or family members. Yours is very happy medium, and it looks great! When my daughter was in elementary school she knew all the plants and how to tell what was ripe and what wasn't. She take her friends on a back yard tour and they'd graze on cherry tomatoes and any berries that were ripe. Her friends were always amazed that we had "food growing in our backyard, not at the food factory". One kid actually said that. At the time, We didn't spray any plants with anything but water or soapy water. So the kids could just eat fruit as they picked it.
If you have young kids, consider planting a cherry tomato. Most kids love them and will eat them. And they produce in the heat longer than larger tomatoes. Encourage them to pick and eat the ripe fruit off the vine. We know that's the best way! Teach 'em young!

My 2¢, i try to go about 4” deep on edging.
We have a crazy amount of dandelions. Any tips for getting rid of them without using chemicals? We attempted to hand-pull them last summer and they came back this year even more than last.
The more you pull them or cut them the worse they will get. their seeds spread so easy. I have only been able to get rid of them using chemicals. there are some really friendly brands out there though.
Hello , try vinegar.It's chemical free and kills the weeds fast.

Hi guy I really learned so much from you showing me how to do a tree ring I am a female I never knew how to do a tree ring I searched it and I came up with your video it has taught me so much I am proud to say that I am glad that I have someone out there a mentor to show me how he does his tree ring I will be looking for more active activities that you do with your lawn by using a saw would cut off my weeds but not the way you're doing it the very classy healthy way thank you

Straight edge equals shovel, pointed edge equals spade. A shovel is for moving þings & a spade is for digging. Good video þough.

How do you stop grass from growing in there?
You never really will, so I just pull any grass or weeds as I mow each week.
My bermuda is tough to cut through with a shovel or half moon. I make the initial cut with a regular edger and then punch a little lower by hand with the shovel.

If You lay down mulch in the ring it keeps the tree from drying out because it keep the soil moist.
Good vid and tips. Your trees will LOVE you if you mulch that ring. Plus you'll have a lot less trouble with weeds invading it.
Hey there's no way I can get down on my knees like that and dig around, I put a round flower bed around one of my trees but it was hard , I had help.
I inherited that same pitch fork looking tool was not sure what I would use it for but thought I would keep it, after seeing this video I now have a use for it. Thank you.

Easier way to make your circle.......loop a string like your blue strap and use a Mark-it spray can like the utilities use for mark outs.......

When you mow around that circle with a mower or tractor there will be clippings going in the mulch or whatever you place around the tree which is a problem. And definitely if you use a weed whacker or string trimmer. It seems the only way to avoid this is using an old fashion pair of grass clippers which are like scissors.....and THAT is hard on the Back!

Great tips! One question - I have some shallow roots that will interfere with cutting in that circle edge. Any remedy for that? The trees are medium sized oaks.

Why wouldn't you just mark it with paint? Doing it with the shovel is rather silly. Marking also eliminates the issue of the shovel going out of plumb.
