I always mostly liked the AoE3 economy more than the AoE2 one because it is more suitable for what i call "late game spamm battles". Basically in Age of Empires 3 you can have an infinite supply of both food and gold (and wood too through certain buildings). In this way, you can play late game multiplayer matches that are mostly about addepting to your enemies choice of units, while fighting massive vattles for the control of a larger portion of the map. In AoE2 this was impossible as no resource was truely infinite (apart from gold if you could trade)
This was by far my favorite game as a kid. I didnt knew how to use the card system properly to take full advantage of it, but i was able to solve any problem with a monster truck... You cant ask for much more can you?
A lot of people so far have been complaining that the game lags/frame rate issues in general, especially during the Campaigns’ cutscenes. I experience this as well, but nothing that a patch can’t fix so I don’t personally complain. Overall, it’s exactly what you pay for, everything looks VERY nice and the two new civilizations are always a welcome. Hopefully they’ll add more civilizations in the future, I got my heart set for some Poland-Lithuania, Korea, and Republic of Venice or Kingdom of Naples (Any Italian Civilization at this point lol). As for the “historical inaccuracies” AOE has NEVER been a series devoted to accuracy. The only historical references are either famous battles or historical figures. So to hear people complain about that is kinda dumb when even the majority of factions in AOE II look exactly alike. The only AOE game that has ever showed actual diversity and variety in their factions is Ages of Mythology and this; AOE III.
Age of Empires 3: Definitive Edition - War Is Not The Only PathPC Age of Empires 3 was something of a different beast for Microsoft when it released in 2005. It wasn’t ever as revered as AoE2: Age of Kings and there seems to be this feeling that perhaps in attempting to keep it fresh, Ensemble created an unbalanced game. Despite that though, it was still a fantastic RTS experience in its own right and one that dared to shake up the established formula. Fast forward to 2020 and that daring approach may just mean that this title holds up in modern times better than than the other entries in the franchise. For me, AoE3 was actually the game in the franchise I played the most. This was primarily due to the fantastic campaigns that featured in both the main game and two hefty expansions. At this time, telling a good story in an RTS was still something of a novelty, Blizzard had some success with Starcraft and Warcraft 3, but otherwise, everything was cheesy and hamfisted (I am looking at you Command and Conquer.) This still holds true today and these rollicking tales of discovery and destruction are just as entertaining. What immediately impressed me however is the fact that as I booted up the game I was greeted with a screen explaining that the developers had gone back over the story, with help from indigenous peoples, and changed offensive depictions, improving accurate representation and overall making the game more historically accurate. In my mind this is something truly wonderful, it would have been easy for the developers to simply shrug their shoulders and brush it off as a product of its time, so this extra effort should be congratulated. For those that never played AoE3 the gameplay, while very similar to the previous entries, has had some interesting tweaks that you will either love or hate. The first is the addition of an extra resource, experience. This experience can be used to purchase shipments from a custom made list at your home base. These shipments may be something simple like crates of food, a new cannon or a couple of villagers, but it could also be something like improving mining speed or increasing food production. This addition can throw out the flow of some matches though as often a match can be won based on the shipments sent, without the need to build up any sort of army in a traditional RTS manner. I feel like, while I adore the metagame of unlocking and creating the perfect list of shipments to help me in my conquest, others may find it a little tedious or unbalanced. The second major addition to gameplay is trading posts and trade routes. Trading posts can be built on set locations on the map and will give the player access to a native people’s units or allow players to collect resources from a trade route. This is a nice addition and creates some interesting tactics in the race to claim these prized locations. Graphically the game has had a nice bump. Sure there is no confusing it for a modern title, but the higher resolutions (up to 4K if your rig can handle it) and the addition of advanced anti-aliasing have given the game a much-needed facelift. There is nothing here that stands out as ugly or hard on the eyes at all despite the game’s age. If I could have asked for one thing, it would have been the ability to zoom out further. I felt a little restricted with my view and after all, monitors have gotten a lot bigger since this game came out so it would have been nice to be able you use that space a bit better. I am guessing that was just too far out of scope for this sort of re-release. Content-wise, everything you expect is here. The main game and both expansions are present along with a rock-solid skirmish/multiplayer mode and a brand new Historical Battles mode which recreates great battles from the past and finally the “Art of War” mode which present players with short battles that come with a set of pre-defined conditions designed to test player’s skill. Under the hood, the game has also received numerous tweaks, like a spectator mode for multiplayer, a massively improved UI and advanced AI (which is immediately noticeable to someone who has played the original release.) In all, it is a nice collection of quality of life updates and gameplay tweaks that make the title extremely playable in the year 2020. AoE3 has always been a little bit of a black sheep in the franchise and that still holds true. Some of the additions to the gameplay split opinion upon its original release, but I feel it is those very additions are the things that make this game hold up so well. I adore the metagame, the addition of trading and, of course, the traditional Age of Empires gameplay and can see myself getting addicted all over again. AoE 3 will never be remembered as the all-time classic that AoE 2 is, but it still deserves to be remembered as an upper-tier RTS title that dared to try something new. With the release of this definitive edition, AoE 3 may just reach the classic status that I think it deserves, but even if it doesn’t, I am glad to have it back.
I totally agree with you when it comes to the campaign of AOE 3. It wasn't even close to the campaign of AOE 2. Would've been even better if they stayed true to actual history, but overall still an amazing game.
Age of Empires III is what I played the most as a kid combined with Command and Conquer Generals and 3. Never knew this got a definitive edition but my laptop can't handle this lol
About all cards being unlocked, that was a problem with the original game where a player with lvl 40 had access to much better cards than one with lvl 15. And since this game is made with real different civs in mind with lots of unique units, techs, cards, it was very annoing to lvl up 5-6 civs. It felt like grinding, not fun. I think unlocking them is the right move, even if some cards are useless. The original deck was contructed with grinding and replacing cards with better ones. And for the haters out there, stop comparing this game with aoe2. This is a different game. Respects to the devs that did not went for copy-paste cash grabs like EA releasing same FIFA every year and calling it new.
Amazing and professional review with high vibe energy thank you Brother. I'll definitely try out this remaster. I thought AOE III was magic when it came out so long ago. 🤗 😇
ugh, my main beef is some of the changes were completely not needed and unasked for. also ending the home city progression really disappointing. the really nice graphics are just enough for me to over look this but not by much..
What you didn't know about New Sweden in the Americas, that most of its inhabitants were Finns. Slash and burn agriculture was banned in Sweden, because it took too much forest, and Sweden wanted to have timber for sail ships. The Swedish forests were colonized by Finns from Finland, because they knew how to turn forests into fields with slash and burn agriculture. Now their livelihood in Sweden (but not in Finland which was also part of Sweden) was lost and they had become outlawed and persecuted. Hence they looked for new homes in the Americas, where forests were still plentiful.
This review mentions none of the MANY bugs, and severe lack of polish. The underlying game is still great but they released this WAY too early. The UI is a mess, you can't invite people to games easily without getting Steam account info from them, which is just a pain, and usually I cant bothered so I just end up playing with random team mates who build mills in age 1.
Aoe 3... I remember I was in school and downloaded the sample game which was 600 mb, quite a big download back then. AOE was so big back then. The original had good graphics with the cherry blossom being my favourite.
I would like to know the reasons why aoe2 players dislike aoe3. I've read and heard things like "the civs play too differently to each other" "units have weird multipliers" "the deck system" which to me actually sound like.. good things? they seem to expand gameplay to me so what is it really? could it be more of a nostalgia factor? because the reasons seem really shallow, from what I've seen it's no a The Sims 4 situation
I returned it. Didnt have technical problems, but there were a lot of microcosmic issues. Couldnt select entire "large" armies at once. Had to partition them to be able to select them. Also, ally/enemy AI didnt seem interested in doing ANYTHING in the skirmish I played unless I physically goaded them into action. Allies never did a thing beyond building their base. I also didnt like that you dont level home cities like in the original - everything is just available. Theres alot thats improved, but just not enough that Im invested in playing any more.
so the same as the original. max of selecting 50 units at once. Its fine, it would be nice if it were changed, but its not a big deal. and grinding for the cards you actually want isnt a good mechanic especially when playing multiplayer
In the original AoE3 you can also see how many workers you have working on each resource, so that's nothing new. As someone that's been playing this game since 2005 and have more hours played on it that can count, how is the late-game lag? Is the multiplayer more stable this time around? I keep hearing about AI pathfinding issues and several bugs that actually makes the game easier.
good review!!! gameplay-wise, this was my favourite of the three. I loved ALL of the mechanics, but just like you, I found the campaign stories somewhat corny (except for the Japanese and Chinese ones). But my overall favourite of the series is a hard choice between AoE 1 (more nostalgia and ambiance) and AoE 2 (perfect balance of everything).
I have the same issue, I have a geforce 1080, and have the settingson ULTRA. Buildings, boats etc looks fine, but the units are kinda blurry and hard distinct for the eye. Did you find a way to fix the problem ?
Showing the number of workers on a resources was ALREADY available in AoE 3 classic. Albeit it was hidden behind the Advanced UI section of the options menu, but I figured anyone who played the game enough to like it would have already added all of those extra features to their HUD.
For honestly speaking your reviews are better than the one that was reviewed in ign the reviewer there review it without any knowledge of the previous age of empires series
Somewhat new to the channel, but AoE games were some of the first I ever played and I've always loved them. Would enjoy seeing some AoE II or III content!
Silly question, but I'm brand new to AoE. Are 3 and 4 completely separate games or is one a new version of the other? What's the difference between the two other than the 2 different sets of civilizations? Are 4 and 2 basically the same? I'd kind of like to play Middle Ages, Hundred-Years-War type stuff, or American Revolution, if that helps.
Pretty late to reply but I just found this video, but yes 3 and 2/4 are very different games, 3 taking place in the colonial/frontier era with gunpowder units and cavalry, while AOE 2/4 are in medieval settings with a much stronger historical focus and using men at arms and bow troops (there is much more variety but for the sake of briefness we will go with that.) I would say for me personally, if you have played AOE 2 you have played 4 and vice versa, while both are very good games they just felt far too similar with most of the core mechanics to justify getting both if you are looking to get into the series. I would advise just getting AOE 4 because it is newer and more up to date with graphics. Now we get to the red headed step-child of the series, AOE 3. I personally love AOE 3 and it lives on as my favorite of the AOE franchise but most long time players would tend to disagree with me and say it is one of the weaker options and I wont fault them on that. AOE 3 has some issues (some civs have very powerful troops that are hard to counter, many criticize the home city system of sending troops and upgrades from cards you have in your deck.) My one large issue is the multiplayer, I dont mind playing 2/4 online but playing 3 online will make you lose a small bit of sanity trying to keep up with the meta micro-management game play people tend to use, I just get around this by only playing the story and single player against the AI. Even after all that I still just find early gunpowder warfare fascinating love it even after those problems. There is no doubt they are both very different games but both have a spot in my heart, I would say most people like 2/4 more but 3 still has a healthy fan base to this day. My advice would be to try Xbox game pass for PC trial and you will get access to all the games and can make a decision on which ones you like more.
I would like to see some sort of "raid maps" that allow up to 4 people take on specialized ai's custom tailored to those maps. Like a MP story mode or something to get special deck cards. That would be cool.
huge empires fan of all games i have been playing since i got age of empires 1 all those years ago and loved it all from one to 3 i appreciate them doing a definitive edition for AOE3 and honestly the animations are absolutely dreadful...Its like they opened sketchpad on windows 10 and colored around the edges.... The game itself granted is alot better tools and the HUD is a significant boost to the original... if you're looking for a graphically enhanced game don't hold your breath its really bad..the saving grace if you call it that is the home city and the cards..sad really after the good job they did with number 2...all in all if you have the original don't waste your money imo...
What's up with all these reviews taking up half their time to explain the differences between this and AOE2? It's not 2005 and AOE3 is not a new game. This is leagues better than the IGN review, but seriously if you looked up this review it's probably because you already play AOE3. I don't care about AOE2. I'm 5 minutes in and you spent half your review comparing this to a game from 1999.
This video didnt age well, a week after launch and after multiple updates on all lowest settings game still doesnt run on 60 fps and has constant spikes. More like a disgrace of a remaster for a masterpiece of a game.
Can you make a ranking system video of all the age of empires of which is the best in you opinion please. im a huge fan and love three and i know you love #2.
A really great review but just saying to all though who might be new to aoe 3 completely. Alot of the features he mentions like icons on the map and treasures to name but a few are in the normal edition of the game aswell
My tip for everyone: test this game REALLY and not like 5 hours and cry... give it a shot, if you like it personally don't stuck with those AoE2 guys who hate this game and have no plan be a man of a real personality and play what you want and not what the mainstream want you to play to.. If you don't like it than DEAL WITH the fact this game were and will never supposed to be AoE2 2.0, if you are able to understand what I mean...
Maybe I might be able to play online this time. I bought the original back in the day and the online code never worked for me. By the time I got around to calling them up about it, they told me there were no more codes to provide so tough shit
@Talf Fire to think about it: it's actually disrespectful to all the people who were slaves and suffered on these plantations. If we forget the history, we are doomed to repeat it. I don't understand what these people are trying to achieve wanting to rewrite history. Not to be offended by a word "plantation" and feel good about themselves?
So AoE series is different from Rise of Nations in the fact that in RoN we actually have multiple ages and with each age our weapons and technology advance. But in AoE each game has only one age ? And only the same level of weapons and techonology ? So thats one thing less in AoE. Is there anything AoE gives that RoN doesn't ? I was thinking about buying the AoE 4.

Hence they looked for new homes in the Americas, where forests were still plentiful.
im just finishing Age of Empires 2 DE with all the DLCS! its one amaaaaazing and mega long game! cant wait to start AOE 3 DE
uh treasures arent new, they were in the original too.
Nice review..im ONLY interested in single player campaign..is it worth it?
i remember when i can instantly spawn pikemans using Spain. Such a great time.
Oh man it looks awesome
Aoe 3... I remember I was in school and downloaded the sample game which was 600 mb, quite a big download back then. AOE was so big back then. The original had good graphics with the cherry blossom being my favourite.
I love muskets so this is naturally my favorite age of empires game.
I use to hate how zoomed in it was compared to AoE2, that was my big issue at the time.
is it just me or does it look like the lorax reworked the palm trees..
@@andrewk2708 Yeah. I dont do multiplayer. I game to get away from people so...
This was my favorite game as a child, Aoe 2 was a little before my time to i didn't play it till after AoE 3, On it's own AoE 3 is amazing
Is anyone else having an issue with blurry in game graphics?? I'm running a GTX 1650 OC
No comb through your settings see if anything looks off
I have the same issue, I have a geforce 1080, and have the settingson ULTRA. Buildings, boats etc looks fine, but the units are kinda blurry and hard distinct for the eye. Did you find a way to fix the problem ?
@@darkness3038 It's forced AA that you cannot turn off. One of the many issues with the full release game.
@@billwilliams328 thank you for the answear ! Do you think it will be fixed or its going to stay like that ?
@@darkness3038 I feel like if people complain enough they may make it a changeable setting
Pretty late to reply but I just found this video, but yes 3 and 2/4 are very different games, 3 taking place in the colonial/frontier era with gunpowder units and cavalry, while AOE 2/4 are in medieval settings with a much stronger historical focus and using men at arms and bow troops (there is much more variety but for the sake of briefness we will go with that.)
I would say for me personally, if you have played AOE 2 you have played 4 and vice versa, while both are very good games they just felt far too similar with most of the core mechanics to justify getting both if you are looking to get into the series.
I actually found the alternate history of this game was interesting of things like the Ottomans colonizing
The game itself granted is alot better tools and the HUD is a significant boost to the original... if you're looking for a graphically enhanced game don't hold your breath its really bad..the saving grace if you call it that is the home city and the cards..sad really after the good job they did with number 2...all in all if you have the original don't waste your money imo...
removed problematic stereotyping - meaning actually moving away from historical accuracy
The games were never about historical accuracy anyway.
AS FAR AS I KNOW, FORTS ARE ALWAYS FREE.
Meaning you cannot build a fort without the covered wagon.
Honestly. Pravus was the person who got me into strategy games, I found out about civ and bio inc from him. Now I have found another great game to try
Shut up you sook grow up 2 is still better and thats why it’s more famous
today i saw sale on steam and came here , should i buy this in 2022? its enjoyable compare to AOE 2 def edition ?
You could always see gatherers per resource just had to turn it on in UI options
Why was the Colonial Age renamed to the Commerce Age?
The display of how many units are working on which resources was already in the original game u just had to activate it in settngs
they removed the progression oh the home city in single player, a sin i can not forgive
One of my fav remasters, love it
It’s a shame that the Koreans and Persians weren’t added. If they were, what sorts of units for each of those civilizations could’ve been added?
This new version has the same connection problem in multiplayer that the original aoe3 had? Or it has been fixed?
I always thought AOE3 was a solid game, and worthy of the AOE brand. I'm glad to see the remaster looking so good. I've got it downloading now.
How's it running for you? I'm thinking of getting it. It looks amazing.
Pravus I hope u doo a full let's play of this game
How the hell those cannon balls from the ships get through walls? at 8:31?
What is a Big Button tech?
This video didnt age well, a week after launch and after multiple updates on all lowest settings game still doesnt run on 60 fps and has constant spikes. More like a disgrace of a remaster for a masterpiece of a game.
Hey pravus, are you going to do some Age of Empires gameplay videos? That would be cool :D
P.S I love your videos, keep it up
Played campaigns back in day but really what matters is skirmish & multiplayer imho..running the free version on steam atm
Can you make a ranking system video of all the age of empires of which is the best in you opinion please. im a huge fan and love three and i know you love #2.
i cant decide if i should buy AoE2de or AoE3de
i played aoe3 original before but not 2.
any ideas?
A really great review but just saying to all though who might be new to aoe 3 completely. Alot of the features he mentions like icons on the map and treasures to name but a few are in the normal edition of the game aswell
I love refrigerators
My tip for everyone: test this game REALLY and not like 5 hours and cry... give it a shot, if you like it personally don't stuck with those AoE2 guys who hate this game and have no plan be a man of a real personality and play what you want and not what the mainstream want you to play to.. If you don't like it than DEAL WITH the fact this game were and will never supposed to be AoE2 2.0, if you are able to understand what I mean...
Do you think I can play this with
Ryzen 5 3600
GTX 1050ti 4GB VRAM
16 GB RAM
1080p 60Hz monitor
I actually really like AoE 3. It isn't the same, but it shouldn't be. The industrial revolution is fundamentally different from the middle ages.
Maybe I might be able to play online this time.
I bought the original back in the day and the online code never worked for me. By the time I got around to calling them up about it, they told me there were no more codes to provide so tough shit
PC-ify natives and makes barbary slavers and pirates a big part of the game gaining their "freedom" ? how modern
Yeah this is total bullshit that they used the word "problematic", they've just reverted from one bias to the opposite.
So making them more historically accurate instead of caricatures is "PC-ifying" them to you? And you people call us snowflakes, jeez.
@@TheCommunistColin how problematic
@Talf Fire to think about it: it's actually disrespectful to all the people who were slaves and suffered on these plantations.
If we forget the history, we are doomed to repeat it. I don't understand what these people are trying to achieve wanting to rewrite history. Not to be offended by a word "plantation" and feel good about themselves?
let me guess Barbosa is put as a pirate, right?
Well, he was one
What Elo are you at in AoE2?
The game is totally legit
Super fun
good job RELIC. now spruce up the Original Dawn of War!
It's time for a stronghold remaster...please.
I want a game like this but its mobile suits and gundams.
Thanks a lot!
there was no stone in the original edition too
Did they ever fix the damn sound glitch?!
There was a sound glitch?
Can you play two civilians against each other in skirmish e.g japan vs japan?
So AoE series is different from Rise of Nations in the fact that in RoN we actually have multiple ages and with each age our weapons and technology advance. But in AoE each game has only one age ? And only the same level of weapons and techonology ?
So thats one thing less in AoE.
Is there anything AoE gives that RoN doesn't ? I was thinking about buying the AoE 4.
If its not reworked like Warcraft its good
How are the graphics in AoE 2 and 3 better than in 4 😂 that cartoon sh*t just completely turns me off the game
