Just to be the clear, the captain of the Soviet submarine mentioned at 8:15 was a man named Valentin Savitsky. The senior officer who disagreed with him and prevented WWIII from breaking out was Vasili Alexandrovich Arkhipov.
I felt like their names were worth mentioning considering that for a brief few minutes on that October day in 1962, they were the most powerful men on earth.
Also, here's some more information on Vasili Arkhipov's life if anyone's interested.
* He was born 30 January 1926, to a peasant family in the town of Staraya Kupavna.
* He served aboard a minesweeper in the Soviet Navy during the Soviet invasion of Manchuria in 1945.
* After graduating from the Caspian Higher Naval School in 1947, he served in the submarine service aboard boats in the Black Sea, Northern, and Baltic Fleets.
* He was aboard the Soviet submarine K-19 as its executive officer when, in July 1961, there developed an extreme leak in the reactor coolant system. With no backup system, members of the crew had to work in high radiation levels for extended periods of time in order to prevent a meltdown. Although the crew was successful in their endeavor, the incident left everyone on board, including Arkhipov, irradiated. All members of the engineer crew and their divisional officer died within a month.
* Following the Cuban Missile Crisis, Arkhipov continued to serve in the Soviet Navy. He was promoted to the rank of rear admiral in 1975 and vice-admiral in 1981, before retiring in the mid-1980s.
* Vasili Arkhipov died on 19 August 1998 from kidney cancer. He left behind his wife, Olga Arkhipova, and a daughter named Yelena.
That was insightful.

I’m just kidding
I wish to thank him for his service. Thank you for the bio.

8:28 This guy is the epitome of an unsung hero, even if it’s just inadvertence by circumstance. If you asked him if he would snap America out of existence if possible, he’d probably say “yes.” But personal values at stake, he made a personally weighed decision against the retaliation. Clearly, it wasn’t mere protocol or expected of him, as he was the only one in opposition to launching the weapon, and he wasn’t even the top ranked on board. This is the beauty of human communication and reasoning.
One of the reasons why I believe automation will somehow lead to our humanity's destruction.
@@JoNarDLoLz An automated society wouldn't make the mistake of assuming that they were at war incorrectly in the first place. A humanized society did , and only survived because 1 man had the heart to stop it. Had he been replaced by someone else, we would not be here today.
He actually was the top ranked on board. As Time Ghost explained in their Cuban Missile Crisis day-by-day, the captain wanted to order a strike and the political commissar agreed. However, this sub was the flagship for the four subs trying to break through to Cuba, and thus had the squadron commander on board, who vetoed the strike.
The man in question was named Vasily Arkhipov, if anyone is interested. A name that, much like Stanislav Petrov, ought to be remembered better than it is.
It’s amazing to imagine that he likely saved the world just by deciding to veto everyone else’s decision on board

We are kinda told in our basic education that we could be dead any day now and it's a flip of the switch away, so I think we've become numb to our own power (not a good thing).

I wouldn't go outside if that was my percentage for getting shot in the head.
Name? The thing is that it isn't low enough. I'd be worried even if it was 5%. The fact is that there's more than a 1 in 10 chance that the entire planet could lose all electricity in an instant sometime during the next 10 years. For such a terrifying and world-changing outcome, 12% is much higher. Here's a similar situation that might help explain just how big that is: what if there was a 12% chance that every single person on the planet could suddenly drop dead within the next ten years? Or even just a 1% chance of that same thing happening? Most people would probably take any steps necessary to prevent that from happening. While 12% is somewhat low, it's still far too high of a chance for something this devastating to occur. At least, that's how I see it.

These close calls is so chilling, it kind of makes me think that there are alternate timelines where it went the other way.
Alien one: did you check on the humans?
Alien two: yes. Looks like they had another close call.
Alien one: really? Last time it was the moon that set off their alarms. what did it this time.
Alien two: (shows paper) the fucking sun.
Alien one: (flips the table in frustration)
Alien three: we might as well just leave these guys they are useless...

Imagine the Tunguska event took place at the very height of Cold War tension.. What sort of miscalculation will prevail?
@@maxchangarrido7841 "imagine"
I would assume the scientific community on both sides would come to the agreement that it would have been an object of extraterrestrial origin. There was something similar like that back in 2012/2013 where a meteor (significantly smaller than that of the object that was responsible for the Tunguska event) exploded over Russia and caused some damage. The only people who would have seen it coming would have been astronomers, but it's kind of hard to keep track of everything in space. I didn't hear anything about it until it already happened. These extraterrestrial objects can potentially travel faster than that of an ICBM. So fingers would be pointed until the answer would be uncovered.
@@marlowewillard The problem is, finger pointing almost took out the world multiple times back then. If not for the decisions of a few rational men we'd be in deep shit. A soviet captain almost caused nuclear war over depth charges. Granted, I don't expect no thoughts of retaliation, but nuclear retaliation is a pretty big decision he would've just made for the whole country. Now imagine, if you will, someone reports that what appears to have been a nuclear blast had occurred in Russia. I'd imagine scientists would have approximately the length of time it takes for an angry man to slap a button (figuratively speaking) to prove that it wasn't a nuke. Those are some odds that I am not a fan of.
@@zer0768 The logical thing here, and it's pointed out in the video, if there were an attack, why would there be just one explosion? That's why the one Soviet commander did not follow protocol. He reasoned, correctly, that it couldn't be an attack if there's only 4 objects on radar.
@@marlowewillard yes but there's no guarantee that anyone else would think that. In the case of the submarine it was 1 out of 3. And with Stanislav it was a detection of launch, not an explosion. I'm not saying it's guaranteed, but it would be pretty damn close.
The last one... fuck. To be completely honest, I'm scared out of my fucking mind. 12%? I think I'll go die now.
Le Sayj but think about this, it would make all nuclear weapons systems powerless, so maybe it could save your life
Sure, could disable the nuclear weapons, but what about the people who decide stealing and raping is a good idea? Maybe I'm overly paranoid, but I think that there would be a bit of murder if that happened...
Le Purge Extreme.
Lyde Koitz still better than getting nuked

@@MattBriggsTV no, any sort of metal conductor will shield any sort of electromagnetic wave of any sort. That's how electricity works. A simple metal cage can stop an entire lightning bolt, so it's not unreasonable to think tin foil can shield a cme.
