Coolio later said throwing shade on Weird Al was the worst decision he ever made in his career.
If I remember correctly, Coolio also admitted that he shouldn't have been mad in the first place. He said he had to get over himself, because if Michael Jackson of all people would get genuinely delighted when Weird Al would parody him, who was Coolio to get tight about it. Fair play to Coolio for realizing that.
@TheLanceUppercut
Well, given the circumstances at the time, Coolio's label had told Al that he'd said yes, which in reality, he had not. So, his dismay at Amish Paradise being recorded actually made sense at the time
@@karlsmith2570 I mean, it makes sense that he would be mad at the label for speaking on his behalf without consulting him. (His contract probably gave them the legal right to do that, but that doesn't make it the right thing to do.) But he should have been smart enough to realize that wasn't Al's fault. (In fairness, he does seem to have figured that out eventually.)
@jonadabtheunsightly well, He did eventually. Though, it also prompted Al to get permission directly from the artist whose song al wanted to parody instead of going through their record label (which I honestly don't blame him for going that route, instead)
@@TheLanceUppercut... The funny thing is Gangster's Paradise is a remake of someone else's song too. So it's not totally original material anyway.
Weird Al only did what Coolio originally did, but Coolio got way too pissy about it.
Weird Al asked Lady Gaga's people if he could use Born This Way for his version called Preform this way. They told him no. So he was going to leave it off the album, but Lady Gaga heard he had asked, and she called him up and told him yes he could use it and told Weird Al to call her personally if he ever wanted to do other versions of her songs. Most artist want him to do a parody of their songs, most see it as an honor.
Nirvana said 'that's how we knew we made it.'
I remember when he asked and was denied by Prince
@@mawbast1because prince was an overrated POS who vastly overestimated his talent.
It was a little more than that if I remember correctly, Coolio was told they hadn't asked for permission and then got mad and only later was made aware that he had actually gotten permission (officially anyway idk if that was just the story for pr)
He supposedly got permission from the label. As Krizz said, the label can give permission if the artist doesn't own the song. I believe that's what happened with the Coolio issue.
Yay someone finally saw Florence Henderson! I just figure no one else watched Brady Bunch.
I know! right?
I mean I don't think anybody under 35 to 40 would have actually seen it even in reruns. I don't know if it's been replayed in the States on some retro Channel or not, but I know up here in Canada with all the US stations we got I don't think I saw the show on TV even in the 90s. It's the same thing when people react to the movie "Airplane" , they don't recognize Barbara Billingsley AKA June Cleaver from Leave It to Beaver AKA the whitest female character in the history of television and realize that it's actually twice as funny that she's the one who speaks "Jive" with the two black guys.
It's being played in Canada on a couple of streaming services. I love my classic sitcoms 😅
And no reaction to the lines from Gillgan's Island? I love that so much!
@@RobwLPOC Lol I'm Canadian (Also named Brady) but haven't seen the show up here in probably at least 40yrs. "50+"
Good catch on Florence Henderson.
Coolio was not low-key mad about this. He was VERY angry and he was mad at Weird Al for 10 years. They finally made up.
About permissions, Weird Al gets permission from the artist (or their rep) or he doesn't do the song. He doesn't have to. He's just considerate of the artists. With Coolio, his people okayed this song, but Coolio wasn't consulted. Coolio took himself just a bit too seriously. I think that's the story.
Finally a reactor noticed her! None of the young-uns do!
And Him getting pissed off about it Is part of the reason his popularity went in the toilet.... it is one of the main reasons his career died.
Coolio getting so mad was why Weird Al makes sure to clear it with artists as part of his policy now.
@@WintersLady nah he got permission before this as well but I think now he tries to get the artists themselves and not just those who own the music
Considering "Gangsta's Paradise" is a remake of Stevie Wonder's Pastime Paradise
""How do you remake my song which is a remake of another song"
Weird Al is brilliant! “White and Nerdy” and “Word Crimes” are also great. Yes, that’s Florence Henderson.
The rapping and lyrics in White and Nerdy are top notch too!
@@darla896 Yes!!!
I was just comin' down here to say this!
I quite like Hardware Store if only for the rapid fire linguistics going on there.
"No phone, no lights no motor cars,
Not a single luxury,
Like Robinson Crusoe,
As primitive as can be"
is from the theme song to Gilligan's Island too. You'd have to be old as hell like me to know that, though.
Damn i always knew that line sounded familiar but couldn't place it! xD
@agatehuntress499 Original theme song of Gilligan's Island.
I was surprised when he actually was saying this it actually sounded good you know
No phone no lights sounds good you know😂😂😂
I was Eight when I first heard this song and I had no idea it was based off a real song😂
define what is considered old?
im 31 and grew up watching reruns on TV
@@0Heeroyuy01 I'm 55, but a lot of people under forty don't know a lot of the old shows. I'm glad you were exposed to them, because they were really great.
I actually met Dawn Wells once; she was really nice.
The backwards bit at the end is amazing. He learned how to lip-sync in reverse, and had to walk backwards through that chaos. So awesome.
Was hoping he commented on that but guess he missed it.
@@ZoophPA In fairness, it's SO well-done that it's not immediately obvious, if you're not looking for it.
@@TSIRKLANDYeah, think I watched the video dozens of times before I saw a how it's made video and found out he walked and lip synched backwards.
I loved it when he sampled the theme from "Gilligan's Island" in this song: "There's no phone, no lights, no motorcars, not a single luxury. Like Robinson Crusoe, it's as primitive as can be."
Most people are too young to realize this...
@@ffjsb I am a _bit_ young for first run (born 1963) but I grew up on reruns of this. Also Green Acres, Hogan's Heroes, Beverly Hillbillies, and other shows terminated during the Rural Purge.
@@GeraldWallsI was born 1970 and I recognized it immediately. (Ashamed to say.)😂
Great catch!
YESSS! Nobody EVER catches that, thank youuuu!!!😄
Al puts on, without exaggeration, the best show I've ever been to. He runs to the side of the stage and changes for just about every song. And the show goes forever. He has been with the same band for like 35 years. They're having fun with each other and love what they're doing and it doesn't just show, you can FEEL it across the venue.
In the song "Tacky", the man does a whole wardrobe change in 2:55 and that video is just one whole take. The man looks out of breath at the end, absolute legend! I actually met him and got him to sign the White and Nerdy CD back in the day when he came onto the army base that my family lived on. One of the coolest moments of my life!
Agreed, his concert was the best concert I've seen
I've been to three Weird Al concerts, and they were all incredible!
I agree. My favorite part is how he and others on stage dress up for certain songs. He's hilarious - even now in the 4th decade of his career.
Completely agree! I have seen him 3!or 4 times and his shows are just amazing!
What no one that I have seen pointed out is how impressive the shot is of him walking while everything is moving backwards, because that isn't cg, that is him walking and moving backwards in real time in such a way that when the film is reversed, it looks like he's moving and walking forwards.
Exactly, he learned how to sing that part backwards too to make sure his lips were synced properly :D
You were correct. It is pronounced Yankovic with the hard c/k sound.
I forget the full details, but Al was told that Coolio gave his blessings for the parody, when he really didn't. After hearing the song, Coolio grew to really like it. Al has said in the past that he never needed artist permissions to do the parodies, but always asked out of respect.
Part of the reason Weird Al isn't legally required to have permission is because he doesn't do any sampling, all of the music is played by his own band. Also, the use of the actual material is covered under the Fair Use laws with regards to parody. And yes, Weird Al also tries to get the permission of the artist anyway because he is a standup guy. Unfortunately, Coolio's management gave the permission and hadn't actually checked with him.
Yup, it's pronounced just like it's spelled.
yes Coolio thought Al was making fun of black people,
then learned what is was about
& he was annoyed that the record company gave Al permission
but hey, 50 years in the business & that's the worst thing you can say about Weird Al: Coolio was annoyed once because of a misunderstanding
Yes, that's Florence Henderson. "Trapped in the Drive-Thru" (Trapped in the Closet); "White and Nerdy" (Ridin' Dirty); "Handy" (Fancy); "Foil" (Royals); "Word Crimes" (Blurred Lines); and "The Ebay Song" (I Want It That Way) are all comedic gems.
if you are married.. trapped in the drive thru is so relatable....
"Couch Potato" (Lose Yourself), "Hardware Store" (an original), "One More Minute" (another original), "Living with a Hernia" (Living in America), "All About the Pentiums" (All About the Benjamins), "Party in the CIA" (Party in the USA), "Perform This Way" (Born This Way), "Canadian Idiot" (American Idiot), "The Night Santa Went Crazy" (original), "Christmas at Ground Zero" (another original), "Your Horoscope for Today" (yet another original)...
White & Nerdy has to be next for sure!
You're the first reactor that has recognized Florence Henderson, man! This is why you're one of my favorite reactors.
The last scene, where he shot the scene singing and performing backwards is my absolute favorite.
If you want to see disrespect watch his parody interview with Eminem. He didn't let Al shoot a a parody because he thought it would hurt his career and the "interview" was the response. That shit is hilarious, you don't want to miss it.
Weird al is the best concert I've ever been to. He does costume changes multiple times during his show. It was great having me and my wife and my 60 year old dad all standing and singing ever word of the show.
Can’t wait to see him next year!
I remember listening to Weird Al parodies in the 1970s on the Dr. Demento Radio Show. Since it is the Christmas season, check out his original "Christmas at Ground Zero".
and the SOng "The Night Santa went Crazy" lol
I've seen Al in concert a half dozen times. Yes, he sells out big venues and small ones. And he puts on one heck of a show.
That was indeed "Mrs. Brady" ... Al has a great sense of humor. Good eye..
You know we show our age, when we say, 'when mtv played music videos'
my cousin just asked me who David Letterman is,
because UA-cam suggests his old clips!
Great reaction my dude Al is the man
You have to react to "White and Nerdy", Weird Al's parody of "Ridin' Dirty"
Love your reactions! :D Ever since joining a comedy band as a hobby, I realized that Weird Al is probably to "us" what William Shakespeare would be to playwrights.
DUDE! You are so good at picking people out! That IS Florence Henderson! I had to look it up to make sure!
Wired Al is the parody G.O.A.T.
#hangovergang forever 🤙🏽
I was going to say the same thing. He is soooo incredibly talented. ✌🏻😊 hang over gang gang 😉
I saw Weird Al at bonnaroo quite a few years ago, they had him on one of the side stages and he had a bigger crowd than any of the other acts including the headliners. He did encores for a solid hour after his set was supposed to be up, with constant costume changes and people were still bummed when he finally left the stage. He's got an odd appeal that works on most everyone, he just makes people happy.
Weird Al is a genius! Every one of his parodies is hilarious. Of his newer stuff Foil is really good. A cameo appearance in one of his videos was as much an honor as he writing a parody of your song.
Almost. Almost as big an honor.
Yes its Florence Henderson and ALSO lyics from Gilligans Island is in the song. Two Sherwood Shwartz tv shows from WAY BACK WHEN.
Weird Al NEVER parodies a song without permission from the artist personally. It’s his unbreakable rule and some songs it took years for him to get permission, others he never got. It was especially hard when he was starting out in the early 80’s but after the Michael Jackson & Madonna songs were huge hit it became a badge of honour and many stars wanted him to parody them. He is very selective with his material, mixing parodies and great originals. When he does do a parody he needs to have a funny, always smart lyric in mind that works exactly with the original music. If he makes a video that is similar to the original he will use the same location, even the dancers and extras if they are available. His Nirvana parody “Smells Like Nirvana” uses every extra and the location from the Smells Like Teen Spirit video, just doing different things. He is a perfectionist who genuinely pays homage to the original artists while being very funny. His most brilliant lyrics/song by far are is Word Crimes (parody of Blurred Lines).
Yes, Florence Henderson from the Brady Bunch did this video
I watched many reactions on this song, but your are the first to mention Stevie Wonder, one of the best musicians ever, I think! Love it!!
Weird Al parodies everyone, from My Bologna (Sharona) to King of Suede (Pain) to Party in the CIA (USA). It's a deep rabbit hole, packed with all kinds of goodies. I didn't see it mentioned, but check out All About the Pentiums (Benjamins).
Also, 13 - 1, let's go, Kingdom!
Weird Al is amazing live. I saw him on his tour where he didn't play any parodies (although he did Yoda during his encore) and it was fantastic.
🤣🤣If you ever need a good laugh, this is the guy!!
I like watching your reactions because you're not a "casual", you're actually in "the biz" and understand music production.
Peace ✌️
7:53 the backwards ending is just brilliant.
Weird Al used to tour all over and was notable for playing much smaller venues. Foil is one of my favorites. All About The Pentiums is one of many other amazing parodies while Hardware Store is a Weird Al original that really shows off his talent.
I come from Pennsylvania Dutch country. People played this for the Amish and they loved it and laughed.
Weird Al actually pulled off some really impressive practical effects in this video. The scene at the end where everything is in reverse, instead of a CG face replacement, he just lip synched the line backwards and they reversed the clip. I imagine as someone who worked with Tech, you get how.. weird that is lol.
Also, the barn wall drop was 100% real and could have killed him if he wasn't standing in the exact right spot, but he doesn't even flinch as it's on the way down. Absolute legend.
You are right. When Wierd Al pareodied your song, you were big. I have to say though , having some Amish communities nearby, NO ONE can work wood for furnsishings or the home the way they do. No compressed IKEA garbage when they make something, it's built to last.
You should look up the back stories to the songs or watch a Interview with Al as he talks about some of the songs. Last part of Amish paradise Al memorized the lyrics backwards he walked backwards singing backwards and they play the recording backwards to give the impression you saw.
Weird Al shows are amazing! A true showman
Been enjoying your take on Weird Al. His cover of 'Happy' by Pharrell Williams... Tacky. Cameo appearances are great, video is well done... One of his best.
I always liked that he threw Gilligan's Island lyrics in there
Just dropping in to say your Stevie Wonder impression is spot on! Just found your channel and I’m binging
Welcome to the Weird Al club he has so many great songs and he has been at it for over 40 years. My favorite is "White and Nerdy" and he has so many other songs.
PLEASE turn the videos your watching around so we can see them as well!!! 😅 your also so amazing!!! I started watching reaction videos not being able to sleep and fell in LOVE with your videos!!!
I am here for you immediately hitting pause over the Coolio Hair. That straight took me out. lol
Weird Al always asked the artist themselves for permission. Regardless of who owned the song. He never wanted to disrespect an artist who did not want to be parodied. That’s why no one has beef with him. He asked Prince to be able to do some of his stuff and Prince said no and Al respected it.
& Al doesn't have to ask anyone for permission, since it's parody
but does anyways because that's how good he is
Weird Al concerts are awesome! They are just a ridiculous amount of fun. I went to one and I had the best time!
This was the first music video I can remember ever seeing. At like 4 or 5 yrs old with no context (hadn't heard gangster's paradise yet lol)
Weird al is one of my top favorite artists of all time and I'm a huge metal and rap fan
You should react to his "Livin With A Hernia" which is a take off of "Livin In America" from the Rocky series. I believe it was sung by James Brown originally for that movie but Al tears it up
James Brown also taught Al some of his signature moves and footwork. Al even used the stage and some of performers from Rocky 4.
Krizz, I found your channel from 40yoFUQ and i am loving your reactions. I have to say something and this is meant with all love and respect. Your facial expressions remind me of Gary Busey in Buddy Holly Story. I look forward to listening to more
Lmao love ya brother, I was born in 79, I went to weird Al’s concert when I was a teenager, he still has hella energy! He’s from Lynwood California if I recall correctly because we both lived just outside of Compton. Dudes wild 😂❤
Did you notice the shout-out to Gilligan's Island? "There's no phone, no lights, no motor car, not a single luxury. Like Robinson Crusoe, it's as primitive as can be." There are all kinds of sight gags, too. The sundial watch; "Our Prices Art Insane" on the quilt stand. "How's my driving?" bumper sticker on the horse & buggy. Read the signs after "Welcome to Lancaster". Milking the cow right into a bowl of cereal. Feeding the chickens pizza. Zero in on the cover of the Amish boys' girlie mag (where she's showing her ankle) and read some of the article titles (like "Plow My Field"). You always have to look for the sight gags in a Weird Al video.
Class act artists of a high caliber to where other artists cover their songs (parody or otherwise) should be happy their music is being spread because I never would have listened to the original of this song WITHOUT the weird al cover. Class act artists are honored that another artist of renown wants to cover one of their songs. See David Bowie's thoughts on Nirvana covering his "man who sold the world" song. No ego, no "mine!" baby mentality. Just pleased and saddened at Kurt's death more so because of that. David Bowie was a class act. Other artists of that level should take note.
Weird Al is such an incredible talent. This takes me back to my childhood. 😊✌🏻🙏🏻❤️
I'm from Eastern Europe and over here, we would pronounce it "YankoviCH". KInda like Nikola Jokic. But since he is only of Slavic descent but born in the USA, I guess it is accepted to be pronounced "YankoviC". Hope that helps. Love the videos!
I grew up on Weird Al. The most important song to do is "Yoda" a parody of "Lola" by The Kinks. Every album has mostly parodies, but there are usually a couple original songs and every album has one polka song, that does a polka medley of most of the popular songs of the time. Those are cool to check out too. But here is his top 100 songs, in no particular order.
Weird Al TOP 100 (in no particular order)

I read something somewhere that one band yelled they had finally made it big because Weird Al wanted to parody them after getting off the phone with him! LOL My youngest is a big Weird Al fan. He and his wife had VIP passes to a show here and I have pics of the three of them. He said Weird Al was very nice and down to earth. He already has his tickets to the 2025 show.
A few of my favorite Weird Al songs are "It's All About the Pentiums" (parody of "It's All About the Benjamins"), "White and Nerdy" (parody of "Ridin' Dirty") and "Couch Potato" (parody of "Lose Yourself").
I was just about to suggest White and Nerdy and All about the Pentiums, then I saw you already suggested them so I'm seconding these suggestions I will also add 'Word Crimes' as it is my absolute favorite of his work.
Great reaction! Keep going down this rabbit hole. Check out some of his newer stuff too. I recommend “Word Crimes” or “White and Nerdy”.
You’ve got to do more of Al. Please consider checking out his parody of Party in the USA, his is Party in the CIA. HILARIOUS!
This one and "Livin' in the Fridge" lived on my "regular tapes played" collection for ages.
You definitely have to review "All about the Pentiums" You want to hear Weird Al spittin bars, that is the one. I appreciate your reactions!
I love how Weird Al goes all out on his parodies. He didnt just parody the song, he parodied the music video. His attention to detail and devotion is 2nd to none. I kinda feel bad for Coolio cause he was a 1 hit wonder (Stevie Wonder... lawl) and he paid like 75% of all the profits to Stevie. Once all was split amongst the 3 artists, Coolio was left with less than 9% (Maybe 75k) Then Along comes Weird Al and parodies what little he had. Yet, it was really an honor that it took time for Coolio to realize. Thank You Coolio for such a great hit and ty Al for the parody.
Weird Al is in the promotion phase of his newest tour. Yes he sells out medium large theatres and has a new costume for each song.
Coolio and Al made up when they found out both artists "people" had done the deal without being entirely honest with each artist
Coolio later said that Weid Al's composition production was spot on.
Artists used to beg him to parody their songs! There was something called the "Weird Al Bump" where songs or albums would see a jump in sales when his parodies of them came out.
I love how Weird Al does an Amish parody song and yet also has a song about technology called "It's All About the Pentiums!"
LoL that JUST played on my Spotify. A favorite of mine.
I had to watch this cause it's too funny😂😂 I also just found out my Dad's family has Amish Ancestry, which to ME, Makes a whole lotta sense. My Love of the Land and trying to live SIMPLE. ❤❤
We could learn a lot from the Armish, imo? Brilliant recap, thank you for sharing this. Coolio was on Celebrity Big Brother UK house and was a true gentleman, may be RIP. 🇬🇧👵🎄
The first concert I ever went to was Weird Al. His shows are crazy!!
Nice I didn't know about the Stevie Wonder connection! Thanks for that!
I can’t wait to finally see him in concert in August 2025 here in LA!!!! Been a fan of his since early 80s
I love how you have multiple personalities, sometimes you're Gangster, sometimes famous , and sometimes rapper, sometimes platinum.
Weird Al is great in concert! His best rap song is hardware store.
Hate to see this out of you, but love to see it from you. I was a big fan of yours in the early to mid 2010s when I was in college
Weird Al's 2025 tour starts out with EIGHT nights at The Venetian in Las Vegas. When he gets to Buffalo, I have 3rd row seats on the section end so my SEVENTY year old mother will still get to see him live! (in a 21,000+ capacity PAC)
That's awesome. I hope you and your mum have a great time
The scene when the house falls over him, real stunt. He did it!
Parody is different from covers. Parody is protected under fair use, he is not legally required to get permission for parodies. He does get permission, because he wants to respect the artist's wishes.
Al is still working. He is a regular guest on comedy bang-bang. Don’t remember any huge parodies since “I just perform this way” (Lady Gaga). Well Justin Bieber also (Baby, Baby)
Weird Al is one of the best live shows I've ever seen. And I'm 46. He does change outfits for every song. Going from a crazy Lady Gaga outfit to his fat costume to cover Michael Jackson's Bad, it's quite impressive. You should check out his song The Saga Begins which is a Star Wars parity of Don McLains America Pie
Hey! Sharing to my son, he's a big fan of yours and the whole family loves Al too, lookn good man❤
I live 30 mins from Lancaster. That’s some funny shit. I actually saw you in Reading, Pa! Keep killing everything you do homie. 🫡
FYI weird Al had to sing the song in reverse walk backwards filming that last final scene just to make it look right and it took him a long time
Loved hearing ya talk about Apple taking Genius. Me and my wife add a Ah Ha at the end every time we see that commercial lol
I never knew that Stevie was the original in some form, not surprising he's a genius.
I saw Weird Al live back in the mid-90's three times. That dude works HARD, Kali. His shows are so precise and well-done. I don't know who his tour musicians were, but they all seemed to be top notch pros. And the stage presence of this guy is hard to describe other than "You gotta check out one of his shows."
Great content, man. Thanks for the goods.
Al is very loyal to his people.
Jon "Bermuda" Schwartz has been with Al almost from the beginning, drumming on a suitcase to Al singing "My Bologna"; drums, percussion, and vocals.
Jim West: guitar, banjo, mandolin, keyboards & vocals.
Steve Jay: bass, banjo, ethnic percussion, keyboards & vocals.
Rubén Valtierra: keyboards & vocals.
@ wow, awesome. Thanks for the info. 🤘
Weird Al used to have a show, and my parents recorded Coolio's original song and music video and "Amish Paradise" right after it on VHS. As well as Weird Al's "I'm Fat" parody song.
I can't tell you the amount of times I watched those videos on that VHS as a small child in the 90's.
Amish food is so delicious! My cousin took me to an Amish fish fry fund raiser, in Missouri, the food was amazing! The had a gasoline powered ice cream machine that looked like something out of steampunk, and the ice cream was excellent. All of the Amish people I’ve met we great people!
"I'm the pious guy the little Am-lets want to be like" is hilarious to me. He called Amish kids omlettes!
You know he's a genius when he can add the lyrics of gilligan's island to compliment the song... No phones no motor cars Robinson curoso
He completely adapted the Beverly Hillbillies theme into Money for Nothing too. Brilliant guy
Yep
I saw him at a casino piano bar in Tunica, MS. He was incredible! So good, so funny, so a part of the audience also....fun times... a note for you the backwards part he actually sang the words backwards so it would look like it was being sung while everything else was going the other way.
Congratulations from down under 😂. Seen so many reactions and you're the only one who recognised Florence Henderson
Bruh seen 2 of your weird Al reactions and you have a sharp eye!
Found you through the reactions . And reactions are 1000% better if the reactor knows their stuff. If you entertain AND I get New insight , you get my sub. Subbed
Thank you!
The woman is Michelle Pfeiffer she played in dangerous minds. I would love to see your reaction to jinjer either teacher teacher or Pisces
You're thinking of Coolio's video. He was spot on thinking that Al cast Florence Henderson
