Fun fact: Guitarist Tom Morello's great uncle was the first president of Kenya, Jomo Kenyatta and his dad was the first Ambassador to Kenya. Also Tom is a Harvard grad.
Fun story: The BBC had RatM on one of their shows as the musical guest once, and asked them to play this song but told them not to swear in the live broadcast. Zack self censored like a good boy UNTIL the last bit where he just belted out the "FUCK YOU I WON'T DO WHAT YOU TELL ME!" until they cut the broadcast.
Always remember that the British public made this the Christmas No.1 in 2009 as a way of stopping the X Factor winner of getting it for the 5th year running 😊
I graduated high school in '93 and didn't discover RATM til '96 or so. I was a pop girl, loved Mariah, Whitney and Celine.. i babysat for a family who had a teen skater boy type who would scream these lyrics in his mama's face. I was mortified, then i was a fan. Lol.
GenX here and not only is this still hitting but as relevant as ever! Rage were warning us all along and the bad went to worse while we slept. I remember after Nine Eleven Rage was banned by all clear channel radio stations across the country.
Just for those who don't know: theres three lines that sound very similar in this and are switched around at times. Some of those that were enforcers Some of those work forces Some of those who held office are the same that burned crosses They switch them around on some lines... But yes most of it is repeating the enforcers - burn crosses one
This tape was passed around after ‘borrowing’ it from older siblings because of the cussing. I read and read and read the liner for days. I’m from rural Texas and it always stuck with me. My first CD was Evil Empire. I’ve always aligned with them and learned so much.
Back in the early 90s in my early 20s, I flew out from San Francisco to visit online friends of mine at SUNY Stonybrook on Long Island. I was a metal/grunge guy, they were mostly rap/hip-hop fans. The 1 CD I brought with me that they absolutely LOVED was that first RATM album. None of them had heard it before, ALL of them basically lost their shit when they heard it. For those too young to know, lyrics like “Some of those who work Forces are the same that burn crosses” just were not DONE. Period, pretty much, outside of rap, mainly. So, when there’s a *metal* band saying it, plus incorporating rap elements into their metal? Absolutely blew people’s minds at the time, and gained them huge respect from fans of both genres.
I remember first time i head this hit in a tony hawk game! And I was Only 7 and Danish but I could under stand it because There is no slang and few words and the same time Said so much
Oy!! Bringing up that this was 30 years ago is just wrong, brother!! I was thinking that they almost structured the song similarly to a Hip Hop song with beat drops and the hook. Love your reactions. Been a fan for years. As a fellow Gen Xer, keep killing bro!!
My best friend introduced me to rage against the machine in 93, and I thought it just sounded like noise. After some more listening time, I was hooked.
I saw RATM live twice in the 90s first in 93 and second time 96 at reading festival UK, the energy was immense, one of the best bands I've seen live, tool are the best and Metalica in the 90s close second but these guys are up there
Greatest band ever! Rage doesn't have a single bad song. Everyone reacts to Killing in the name of, but in my opinion, Know your enemy is their best song
@@Serenity7907 in point of fact, they *were* invited. The concert was originally planned by Mtv, which invited Rage. The city of LA refused Mtv's permit request, so Mtv bowed out, but a US District Court Judge ruled the concert could go on as planned. Rage was specifically asked by then-President Clinton to go forward with the show. LA Police disrupted the show by switching off electricity during the opening band's set, causing a riot. The police forced the crowd to disperse, but then allowed the show to continue.
Gen X here... I had BJ Betty on cassette rolling around in my 5.0 GT hatchback mustang with 2 12s in the back. I even feel like this was 30 years ago lol
Oh man…early 1991 I was hosting the most popular specialty shows in N Texas. I was on the first Alternative Station THE EDGE. I did THE HARD EDGE. Broke a lot of bands- Pantera, Alice In Chains, Drowning Pool and more. Kids say “oh that old rock…” 😳😳😳 my brain goes WTF? Time is far too fleeting K. Thank you for your channel. Please play YES! Please! My favorite band. Love to you and yours. Happy Holidays!!
Lol Krizz this might be one of their less political songs, and the main lyric is literally "those who died, are justified, by wearing a badge, they're the chosen whites". Pop on "Down Rodeo" and the first 30 seconds will have you wondering why you haven't heard every one of their songs.
The most annoying thing about this song is when people in the comments who have no idea what it’s about, use it to rebel against vaccines and masks during a worldwide pandemic. 🙄 Those same folks accuse Rage of “selling out” because they got rich off their own labor.
"..30 years ago.." I am in this statement and do not like it. If you haven't dug into Rage much, bounce around a bit and see. Pretty much all of the first two albums are fire, but some of the bigger radio plays like this were a bit simpler, lyrically. Simple statements for complex issues latch well, I imagine. But Zach hits it hard on a bunch of others.
So they're the machine for listening to basic science, and not wanting to spread covid? Also it was the rules of the venues so they couldn'tplay without following them. Americans, smh.
Even they got got. They fell and became part of the system and pushed the systems narrative. Love the song for what it was but reality shows you just how powerful the forces are that work for control. If you don't like what I am saying ask yourself why as I stand to the original message of this song.
But alas, they were on a major label and pretending to call out the system! Would've been better if they were independent artist and not part of the system!
What has being on a major label has to do with calling out systemic racism, police brutality and injustice? They never claimed people can't make money. Try getting your message out in the 90s as an independent artist.
We would’ve never heard of them if they were on an independent label in the 90’s. We ALL have to participate in this system one way or another, there’s literally no escaping it.
Fun fact: Guitarist Tom Morello's great uncle was the first president of Kenya, Jomo Kenyatta and his dad was the first Ambassador to Kenya. Also Tom is a Harvard grad.
Band was on FBI watch list cause of their music lyrics and on MY playlist for the same reason! Thank you son. needed this!
GEN X WITH YOU! It's like 30 years passed with a blink of an eye!
man, those 30 years feel like 5 days regarding these bomb tracks we had. They've never left from my playlists.
Always remember that the British public made this the Christmas No.1 in 2009 as a way of stopping the X Factor winner of getting it for the 5th year running 😊
“Never, ever be afraid to make some noise and get in good trouble, necessary trouble.”
~ John Lewis RIP
Hell Yeah! We need more of that!
Their entire catalogue applies to this this day. And it probably will never be irrelevant.
Yes. It's insane how much it hasn't changed.
I graduated high school in '93 and didn't discover RATM til '96 or so. I was a pop girl, loved Mariah, Whitney and Celine.. i babysat for a family who had a teen skater boy type who would scream these lyrics in his mama's face. I was mortified, then i was a fan. Lol.
Hell yeah I realize dat…I graduated in 92…. THE MUSIC WAS STR8 BANGINNN IN THE 90’s …EVERY genre was 💪🏽🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Welcome to the Rage rabbit hole. Do fistfull of steel from this same concert. Chilling. Zach spitting bars
Zach rocking an entire festival while looking like his mama dressed him for the first day of middle school.
😂😂😂
I am a Boomer.. 66 years old.. and this is the SH*T!!!!! LIT ASFK.
The kids don't get it
GenX here and not only is this still hitting but as relevant as ever! Rage were warning us all along and the bad went to worse while we slept. I remember after Nine Eleven Rage was banned by all clear channel radio stations across the country.
I appreciate how the music is structured to be a lesson, cause lord knows I keep needing to hear it.
Just for those who don't know: theres three lines that sound very similar in this and are switched around at times.

This live version is just amazing
I was at that show. It was lit!
The irony: Zach: "Crowd: "Now you do what they told ya." Zach: "Now you're under control."
Rage speaks nothing but the truth. Would love to see you react to Down Rodeo.
one of my favorite rapper's listening to another one of my favorite rapper's.
This is a great track, but I think you'd dig "Know Your Enemy"...STUDIO VERSION 😎

I love the youtube videos when Zachs follows say: "FU I wont do what you tell me" during a traffic stop, the window smashes are always epic.

There's still a need today for this genre... hard hitting music that attacks what's wrong in the world. I'm working on it.
Bulls on Parade! The video is FIRE!
The way I look at it is that I have had over 30 years to appreciate this and other RATM songs.
This was lit. We had middle and high school walkouts when came out live video
They’re sponsored by chase bank now, but the original music is full of bangers about true anarchy.
They’re broken up and not on tour, what do you mean they’re sponsored by Chase now?
🔥🔥🔥
30 YRS & THEIR LYRICS ARE STILL VALID!!!!
This song always gets me jacked, pumped up or really anything by Rage is fire!
My best friend introduced me to rage against the machine in 93, and I thought it just sounded like noise. After some more listening time, I was hooked.
Best band ever
Man my oldest child just turned 30!! Time flys!! Rock on!!🤘🤘
its just a shame, Most of our generation cared more about getting in the pits than actually learning about the lyrics
Yeah man! Ahead of it's time
Now try Down Rodeo. Will blow your mind.
+1
This one always gets me hyped!!!
Rage was great back in the day. Love the bass in this.
Yasssss! Still a banger today!!! Had fun watching this review! Love it when you get it, feel it and sing along!❤

🔥
so sad for humanity that all their songs are still current and relevant. Maybe in another hundred years we can grow the fuck up.
Hell yeah
.
thats fkin funny we had school walkouts when pink floyd came out with The Wall
WHAA!This cane out in 93 I was thinking late 90s ,wrong.I feel like just yesterday was 1993.
Greatest band ever! Rage doesn't have a single bad song. Everyone reacts to Killing in the name of, but in my opinion, Know your enemy is their best song
Yo Krizz, Native music. Check out the song "Why" by Supaman or "Fancy fan action" by Young Spirit
Not only did the government *not* shut them down, Rage played the Democratic National Convention! LOL
I mean, they played outside the convention, it's not like they were invited.

They played this song on the BBC and the BBC told them not to swear. So you can guess exactly how that ended.
Good ol Christmas #1 performance lol
They are the machine now
Tom Morello, the lead guitarist for Rage Against the Machine, has a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from Harvard University:
Oh man…early 1991 I was hosting the most popular specialty shows in N Texas. I was on the first Alternative Station THE EDGE. I did THE HARD EDGE. This song is on either Guitar Hero or Rock Band, if you have it.
GOAT's

Shits tough 💪
We the same age... stop making me feel old realizing this is nearly 32 years ago, lol.
Check out the shows they played at the DNC and RNC Conventions 🤯
Pretty sure that this is the same concert that has an incredible version of Sober by Tool...
Should watch them when they performed live on BBC.
The "kids" would say.....the late 1900's
🤘😝
Had tickets to see Beastie Boys and RATM and one of the Beastie Boys broke their shoulder and it got canceled… nooooooooo
Wow! That would've been EPIC!!!! Beastie Boys Glasglow concert is a perfect show!
Krizz: "Ya'll realize this was 30 years ago?"
ME: "Why you gotta bring up old shit man?" 😂
hahaha.... I'm 55. I feel ya!
The most annoying thing about this song is when people in the comments who have no idea what it’s about, use it to rebel against vaccines and masks during a worldwide pandemic. 🙄

pink Floyd "great gig in the sky"
30 years and still a banger... absolutely. Unfortunately still relevant as well :/
Please go down the RATM rabbit hole!
Bro, check out Paolo Nutini Iron Sky.
Rage against the machine was signed to Sony. Talk about industry plants. All they be doing is raging for the machine
This was way before UA-cam and TikTok, you had to be signed to get your music out there
and thanks for the reminder that our a$$es are old lol
Rage are legends. Warriors
they sold out and now rage "for" the machine.
No one is mentioning how now they rage for the machine. It’s sad really
You need your videos where they are not seeing backwards

Are you scared to do testify live
Probably their worst track. Well worth checking out more of these guys. Some interesting lyrics to dive into, and the music has groove for days.
Too bad Rage became the machine i.e. they didn't want people attending their shows if they weren't vaccinated
So they're the machine for listening to basic science, and not wanting to spread covid? Also it was the rules of the venues so they couldn'tplay without following them.
Americans, smh.
