The biggest problem with the move from the 990 to the 800 was that they didn't decrease the maximum cylinder bore size along with it.
The surface area of the piston has a big impact on the power and torque an engine can deliver, so when they went to a smaller displacement last time, manufacturers simply reduced the stroke of the engine, thus reducing capacity but then made it rev higher. This meant the engines put out similar horsepower but were far more peaky and hard to mange on power delivery, resulting in the crazy high sides you'd see in those years.
With them placing restrictions on bore size this time around, that should hopefully prevent a similar thing happening time, though I have no doubt the engineers will come up with ways of making them very nearly as fast pretty quickly.
Personally I think the main thing that will cut lap times will be the removal of the shapeshifting devices. As you said, they're already limiting power from the engines until they're into 4th gear

You’re kidding right? There is a 4 point gap between martin and bagnania, with marquez and bastianini winning races in between. There are also FAR less overtakes in F1. In terms of actual racing and competition, Motogp is way more entertaining than F1. Just look at motogp’s last race. You will almost never get that amount of excitement in an F1 race. In almost every grand prix there is an important event affecting the championship. You can call the F1 situation a 3 way race all you want, but it still ian’t close.

I recommend that the new engine size be limited by RPM. We had smaller engines before and the bikes revved higher with narrow powerbands. This made the bikes fast, but much more difficult to ride and reduced safety. Lower RPM will make the engines last longer and force manufacturers to widen the powerbands as they cannot just spin the engine faster to move more air through it. It all comes down to power/weight/wheel-spin. The bikes are destroying tires so much, that they are limited to what the bikes can do.

This just happens in racing, someone works stuff out and they dominate. But if you ask me, these other brands just need some genuine good riders. Like Wsbk, bmw is nowhere, they get Toprak, they win by a mile. Riders still make the difference (largely, some exceptions, Rossi’s move to Ducati for eg which was a distaster, when duc were rubbish, remember?). While yes various makes battling it out is better I agree, it doesn’t detract that much in bikes, they’re still having some epic battles between the riders, Pecco v Martin is fantastic. And it certainly doesn’t mean sbk is better than gp to watch, where the racing just isn’t that spectacular. And the 12 events per year is just nonsense. When one says that a bike has higher corners speed or faster in a corner it simply means that the riders did not brake that much before the corner, ie because there was no need as the rider is talented or simply that the bike is slower and will need to brake that hard before the corner. For us deadly motorcycle plebs that simply means that on a slower bike we are not scared as much on the straights and dont brake loong before the corner, instead we might just touch the brake in comparison and just go through the corner.

Super bikes with four-cylinder engines were NOT limited to 750cc for a very long time. Google Eddie Lawson's 1982 Kawasaki KZ1000R.
From 1948 until 2002 the capacity of the premier class was 500cc. Thats Legendary.

MotoGP is about pushing the overall evolution of racing efficiency, it's not just all about power from the engine. Sometimes they restrict engine, to push the teams to develop other technology and theory to compensate the engine restriction, it's about pushing those little things that can make a huge difference. People be complaining like, the aero sucks, should be like 2T era back, electronics ruined motogp and such. Bruh, the lap times literally are getting faster and faster, the lean angle are getting crazier with these "lame" technology, and that directly contribute to how today road bikes are getting better and better overall. Don't expect motogp to be a "who can fit a bigger engine" drag racing or racing in an oval track, no, motoGP doesn't operate like that racing culture. It's not just about the straights, it's also about diving into the corners till the shoulder touches the tarmac. It's not the same, just like how nascar and soccer are not culturally and passionately the same with motogp/F1 and football. Oops lol

a more agile bike, nicer to watch

missed out the 850's have a much tighter max bore restriction forcing the makers to build long stoke engines.

    • @bhtooefr
      @bhtooefr 2 місяці тому +1

And that's a huge part of what'll make it different from the 800 era - the 800s made lots of power because they went down in stroke, not bore, from the 990s. (To massively oversimplify, bore is what limits your potential power as it's what limits airflow, a longer stroke lets you get that power at lower RPM.)
(AFAIK, the 1000 cc bore limit was selected to match the bore of the 800s, so manufacturers could make longer-stroke 800s to get a 1000 - or, roughly the same power at lower RPM. And, the 850 cc bore limit results in a stroke very close to the current 1000s, which basically means they should make less power at similar RPM.)

Great overview Dan👍. However, I think the recent is pretty awesome at the moment regardless of the speed and the technology. Fair enough, ban the aero as the popular opinion is that it makes overtaking more difficult...I'm not completely convinced though. Smaller engines will result in less torquey screemers again, and potentially higher corner speeds...so how safe is that? We could end up with less powerful motogp bikes than we have road bikes (Ducati v4r?)...and that would be pretty poor for the premier bike racing class.

I have a idea. No Ducks. Only 4 strokes. Also, you must take 6 bikes from the actual manufacturer just like you and I can buy off the showroom floor. No altering the bikes. Just get same bikes we do and then you have 24 hours to make 2 bikes race ready.
The bikes must cost than 45,000 after the teams tinker with them for 24 hours to make the race ready.
    That seems fair to me.

What really matters is the evolution of the bikes otherwise we would have stayed in the past era, under all these restrictions we see no more truly innovations as such in the past, the riders will develop new techniques as they did in all these years of evolution, there's really no limit to this, the most stupid regulation of all is the categorization of the bikes that punishes the most advanced ones, truly unfair

The 990s was the best era, triples, fours inline and V configuration, a V5!! And then another V5. Weight advantage for less cylinders, Different tyre manufacturers, Different ideas on aerodynamics Honda with the dirty air on the RC211V, Ducati with the slippery fairing on the desmo.
Granted the Honda dominated, but is that any different to Ducati's dominance now?
And the bikes aren't/weren't too fast, the circuits weren't designed for vehicles that fast. New circuit's are what's required, but try and get a new circuit developed and permissions for planning? Not happening.

They made a huge mistake way back when the sh!t-canned the 2-strokes.
They should have just said, "Same capacity limits (500cc), no more 2-strokes, no more than 8 cylinders, no more than 6 gears & no aero (although, I guess nobody had thought of aero back then) with the weight limit staying the same (135kg from memory)
That would have got the boffins coming up with some real prototypes & we would have seen what engineers dream about in their quiet moments...
