  • Head transplant? Isn’t that supposed to be impossible because they can’t get the spinal cords joined? William Sikkema, a Ph.D. candidate in biomedical nanotechnology, may have helped find the answer: graphene nanoribbons that are just one atom thick.

While head transplants are certainly a laudable medical and scientific endevor, the far more pressing concern is successful recovery from spinal cord injury. That's where current medical breakthroughs are stuck. This video is putting the cart before the horse and proposing an entire head transplant, when we're still trying to figured out how to repair damaged spinal cords. Your mice model is fine but maybe use that nontechnology to fix a few thousand paralysis patients and then I'll be a little more interested in what you have to say.

The major question is how to reconnect the thousands of nerve connections to the specific body parts they control. The brain is already mapped to specific neurons in the spinal cord, so how do you reconnect the left big toe nerve to the left big toe in the brain? Maybe the voluntary muscle control can be remapped in the brain, but what about the more crucial involuntary controls of the heart, digestive, and other systems that are monitored by the brain? I find it hard to believe that these nerves simply "find" each other and exactly reconnect across a razor thin gap.

Why remap the brain to the parts? It’s easier to map the parts to the brain and then calibrate the smaller differences. Why build a new road through a mountain instead of rebuilding the road?

there's a theory according to which if you fail to connect all the spine nerves to a cortect analogue of their respective "sensors" etc, you end up with a brain that's unable to retain coherent consciousness

The next step would be to heal damaged spinal cords before trying a head transplant, I would guess.
