If the cause is just, you go as deep as you need to (in that one particular case, it was a rare development unit that had been disabled with a pair of snippers to the mobo). And if you want "fun", look up "james channel diy console" and you'll find a guy who... doesn't much care about such trivial things as layers, bruv straight up saws boards in half and has fun. :) Fair warning, it's not for the faint of heart.
Glad to see the warranty use for the PS5, it's much more entertaining to watch you attempt to fix consoles that have previously been opened or are out of warranty imo. My season 2 suggestion: Have a "console repair bingo" card with some spaces like "faulty hdmi", "blown capacitor(s)", and other problems you've seen. Once a bingo card is complete, you could have a high-risk/reward episode, or let a top comment decide what your next repair will be. Whatever you decide, keep up the great content!
You absolutely have to do a season 2 and not just leave it there once you reach 1000 dollars it would be funny to see if you can reach the next 1000 dollars in less episodes in season 2
I seriously cannot believe that Series X fix, that must be one of your best ever fixes. Great episode, I usually watch these to relax and fall asleep, but I was on the edge of my seat for this one.
Joey, great job. Two things: 1. Watch northwest repair to learn more about grinding multiple layers and running jumpers / conformal coating. He's great. 2. You could've shaved down the solder mask on the top and put two more caps on there to make it a full repair. I'm not an electrical engineer, but I wouldn't want to stress the other 2 caps more by not replacing the two that failed. Great repair. It's so much fun to see your skills improve.
As someone who is nearly 20 years in the soldering field, i can tell you, that is a lot of unnessessery heat to the board while changing hdmi port. Do not fill the holes with solder and kill it with the heat. Leave them clear and after putting port add flux and solder it. It will fill the holes trough easier and quicker. Also, when being tinned that hdmi pins will be soldered in one pass from upper side even with soldering iron. Much faster with a lot less heat. BtW nice repair man...
I'm over 50 years in, although with multilayer SMD boards for the latter part, and I agree - I do wince sometimes (especially injecting high current where you don't know where it's going, and some tracks will burn out at much lower currents. But always interesting to watch.
@@emteepeeess i too with over 90 years in the field agree, take the multilayer smd board and flip it side ways and solder it like that trust me it works like a charm
congrats on clearing that multi-layer short! If you need to add back some capacitors to that area, you can carefully expose the copper under the mask to make a new pad and just solder them, or even just solder them to the side of the existing capacitors. You've managed to do a technique I've seen before on GPU repairs where they've also suffered some burn damage. The areas immediately around those vias (if they go through the entire board) are thermal vias, so every layer there should be the same in that immediate zone, so by grinding down a layer or two, you can pull away any melted and fused layers and clear that conductive carbonized stuff from the burn.
😂 the gloves comment, loved it. They totally freak me out lol, but my ocd is no one else's problem by mine. However, I wish they made those gloves in brown or dark grey, something. Seriously. They should.
Bro you DEFINITELY need to do another season and keep going! You are very talented and well liked by many of us! You are starting to get a big fan base going. The only thing that I would request is that you put your live streams in a separate channel or something. They might be long and what not, but someone like me that doesn’t have the time to watch all of your live streams can still watch them later and also learn as well
Excellent episode, had me in a trance with that series x. Thanks joey for all you do. I am learning myself but only doing stick drift on xbox controllers and xbox ones and one s. I do have a one s where the ram is getting warm when injecting so will be trying a swap and reball soon. Need to pluck up some courage. Nice one again joey, keep it up mate.
This first series is just awesome! You definitely have to do it again, perhaps look for other items a profit can be made from once repaired. Keep up the great work! 👍
Definitely do a season 2. Using everything you know now let’s see how long it takes you and how many videos it takes to get up to £1000 compared to season one.
Actually went back to your very first video where you replaced an iPhone 5 battery. It's amazing to see how far you have come! I have loved watching this series and almost insist that you continue onto at least another. When I say insist, I mean beg 😁
Best episode ever. Keep going Joey and welcome to the wonderful world of Solder Mask. Conformal coating is the shiny stuff they spray over the board and components for use in possibly damp environments.
Definitely do another series - you're definitely learning as you go. However, I don't know what your general electronics background is but, as someone who has designed PCBs before, those two caps were there for a reason and there may be operating circumstances that could cause problems without them. When you're dealing with fairly high frequencies on some planes, there can be all sorts of weird effects and these caps would be there to reduce that.
For the future, in general if you have any charred thing on the board, it definitely has to be removed as it will almost certainly cause a short, though maybe not a complete short (especially if it doesn't look too bad), so it may still work and make that area heat up more... which could eventually make it burn completely. What you did there was the right way to deal with it, after seeing others to this sort of repair.
Playing catchup being a month behind on JDT fix or flop, the fix on the series x fantastic, you were willing to take 100% loss for the sake of knowledge and it paid off massively. Congrats mate.
Unfortunately my face doesnt feel welcome! Lol, I do but my face doesnt. Man, thanks a lot Joey. Im now addicted to the Joey Does Tech Profit or Loss series. For the past 10+ episodes, I havent missed a single one.
This series made me discover your channel recently and I can't help but watch it all! I think you should go for season 2! Even though I'm sure you can produce other good content
You should do another series for sure, try and beat your record sooner. You should also start a spin-off, where you try things you have little experience with :) Would be fun content and you can widen your skill set. So cool watching you thinking back to the first few episodes, keep smashing it.
100% do a series 2 and maybe add some retro consoles or different handheld like a rog or steamdeck, love what you do and massively helped with my own repairs multiple times ❤
Love the videos. Excited to see you hit 1000. My ocd wanted to say I would of wanted to find a way to grind new pads and put the 2 caps back on the xbox but that's just me
28:22 this gets a lot of people who don't have the courage (or let's be fair, the knowledge) to dig under burnt things. It might look AOK on the topside, but it's what's under that gets you. Scroll back a few frames before the archeology and it looked presentable, no worse for wear, but, clearly somewhere, something was touching. Messy things, blown caps. One of the reasons i don't particularly like modern boards. Small size, cool, damage potential, massive.
I've almost caught up! Great video so far Joey. I got a guy to 3D print the microscope mount for a computer monitor. I haven't connected it yet, waiting on the computer arm mount to come in the mail. Am excited to have more space to work with on my desk :D
I would love a season 2, but I think you should include items beyond gaming consoles sometimes, like pc monitor, graphics card, motherboard etc. It would be an invaluable source of knowledge for people looking to fix their stuff and it should bring you a larger audience as well.
Would be good to see some revisited items again. More knowledge over time might make fixing some of the previous fails possible, or at least Frankenstein some of them together to make a working piece. Looking forward to season 2 electric boogaloo.
I bought an Xbox One S with water damage and supposedly a bad power supply for $30. I opened it up and checked the power supply. Was working. I started to inspect the board around the bottom to find a couple of caps had bit the dust. With some minor corrosion. I cleaned the board up. Replaced the caps with similar size from a PlayStation board. The board powered on. I put it all back together and it had been working flawlessly ever since.
Stunning stuff ... - on the PS5 under warrantee ... good on you for sending it back to Sony, I like the attempted fix the other time, but great move this time around, no need to feel bad about that at all. - on a potential Season 2 ... yes please. :)
