My Elgato STREAM DECK died | Can I FIX It?
Вставка
- Опубліковано 8 лют 2025
- I use this Elgato Stream Deck for video editing. It's really useful for shortcutting copy/paste, and inserting audio/video tracks etc.
But last time I tried to use it, it wouldn't work!
Let's crack it open and see if we can fix it.
Hope you enjoy!
Steve
PS. I'm not an expert in repairs at all. I do this for fun, and it may not be the best or safest way to go about repairing broken stuff. I'm pretty good at melting plastic though. Please don't copy me - I'm an idiot.

Are we just not going to talk about the curiosity that comes with that t-shirt?
I'm much more interested in in the t-shirt than the stream deck
Steve has his face on nearly every button of that device, and the T-shirt is what's got you wondering?
I'll bet everyone caught a virus at that picnic :)
Friend of Grokster? :)
First thing I noticed was the lime wire shirt !!! Takes me back to a better time !
I mentioned this in a previous vid
Get one of those capacitors (a new one), test for continuity, then reverse polarity and test again, you can keep doing this and get a short beep each time, this is because you charge the capacitoor in one direction, then discharge and recharge in the other
You can see this if you go to the resistance range, it should briefly show a short then the numbers will slowly rise into the megohm range
A higher capacitance will rise more slowly, think of it like a battery charging/discharging
Correct. Capacitors (or capacitance) presents a short at power up and thus have a large in-rush current. The higher the capacitance the longer the "beep". Need to provide care in designing electronics to account for the in-rush.
It has been mentioned a lot, but its not getting through :)
I think a short continuity beep on a capacitor is pretty normal, the meter is sending some current through which the cap initially allows, but the resistance increases as the cap charges.
At this point I'm surprised he doesn't realise Caps "charge up" so produce a short bleep. He's done enough!
There's no resistance in capasitors, at least on DC circuits.
@@ericpode6095 He thinks he's testing 4 caps when they are very obviously parallel to each other. He really need to work on his fundamentals.
@@Njazmo I'm not an expert, but if capacitors have no resistance then how would you explain what is happening at 6:35? My understanding is that capacitors have resistance related to their charge, as opposing charges build up on the two plates, as well as an equivalent series resistance (ESR) that acts like a resistor in series with the capacitor.
@@Njazmoelectronic engineer here with more than 25 years of experience... Capacitors have resistance and it changes with charge. Is pretty normal they have lower resistance discharged and it goes up when fully charged.
Amazing how a tiny little component can bring the whole thing crashing down to useless. Well done, as always.
As soon as you said the air station was at “full wack” I knew something was going to get blown away.

I'm always impressed by your determination to waste as little as possible. Re-using the hot glue is on another level, I don't think I've ever seen anyone else do that.
When is a capacitor not a capacitor?
When it's incapacitated!
Seriously, Steve, you do overwork your stuff.. your UV light.... your Stream Desk.. what's next? I even hear the plaintive cries from Dave quietly in the background occasionally...
Well, one of my overhead LED lights has just failed, so I guess that's gonna be next! 😅 although I suspect that's just a battery issue.
since i subscribed to you're channel I have become more adventurous with repairing all my old retro games machines/computers and now patiently wait EVERY week to see what you repair next,😁👍you are one of the most entertaining creators on this channel sir and i love you're content 👍
Come for the fix, stay for the synthwave.
The Limewire T-Shirt is cool 🙂
Og i used limewire back then.
Always nice to have an easy fix. Conversely it's very entertaining to see you struggle for hour upon hour and finally get the desired result.

"How much airflow Steve?"
"Yes"
The Speeeeeed! The SPeeeEeeeeeEeeed……and the noise of the Speed!
Great video. It's getting to the stage now where I watch all of your videos just to hear the great background music that you use.
Keep up the great work.
I’m surprised that he did not fix the crappy connection on the red wire that’s probably the next point of failure (clean image at 4:51)
Well done Steve love watching your channel makes me laugh and get to learn something at the same time
wish you all the best mate
You never fail to make me happy man, thanks for the Focus cover.
Points for Monkey Island wallpaper!
Was going to post the same thing. Those were some great games.
Was about to say the same. So many fun hours, and a foundation to my sense of humour.
Ahh so I'm not the only one who noticed. Its from the village on monkey island itself.
Hey Steve! Just wanted to you to know that I have a job as an electronic repair technician for a major company thanks to your videos. Thanks for the inspiration!
This needs to be seen by steve ❤
Cool, which company?
Noice 👍
@@MizuhoChan I don't quite want to reveal too much info but it is a multinational and there was a good amount of crossover between game console repair skills and what I'm doing now. To the point where they asked me in depth about the hobby in my interview. I'm also allowed to use their equipment in my spare time for my own repairs now so I'm attempting to learn to do some PS3 frankenstein repair with their professional reballing machine
@@srassy Cool, I've tried PS3's before, but delidding is super tough without a decent tool (which I can't find). Good luck :)
Nice fix again Steve. I would recommend using a soldering iron for mounting the 2-contact chip components instead of the hot air station. First clean at least the other pad with solder wick, add fresh solder to one of the pads, reflow one end of the component to that pad while holding it in place with tweezers and then solder the remaining pad with fresh solder. This way there's a smaller risk of launching the chips due to the air flow and also to overheat or burn adjacent parts.
Hi Steve. No idea how you appeared on my timeline but I’m absolutely hooked. Love the vids and humour! Keep em coming!
That was a good one! Not often the issue is staring you right in the face! Like the buttons on your Stream Deck. :P
😂😂
I bought one of these for my friend's son for Christmas. He loves it and uses it for editing his own videos and occassional streaming. Came in very useful during his 30 hour 100k marathon stream.
Nice! Cool that it was an easy fix. You ever thought of getting some soldering tweezers? It might be easier than hot air for the small stuff.
Hi steave and everyone I am Patrick and I'm 21 years old and all I got to say is that I have a liver problem and I'm going to die because of it and everything you do and every video chat you do makes me feel better and the laughter that you shere with your friends and family I just hope that it lasts for ever and btw I don't drink sincerely parrick
When reading capacitors in resistance you will get a charge/discharge reading depending on polarity. The meter injects a small voltage when reading. Once charged with DC voltage it will charge then read as open. That's why you get the beep. It charges for a brief moment then reads open once the cap is fully charged. I'm an industrial electrician, i have to do this stuff all the time. I work on komatsu 4100 electric shovels. Lots of big capacitors we have to check.
Nice one Steve. Well done👍
Steve, I've said previously that meters on continuity will beep as you charge/discharge capacitors. So don't worry if you get a short beep, it's normal.
your channel is the #1 best on all of UA-cam !
Hay now, let's not get carried away.
Very satisfying, well done Steve.
Might be interesting content to see the effect on different resistance, capacitance and maybe inductance measurements made while at a range of temperatures to see by what degree the readings might vary. Also, when checking caps and resistors when the board has been used and so is holding charge and may well confuse the multimeter.
Replacing both those caps was probably a good idea anyway, just in case the other one was going to fail at some point too? (Thus you have pre-emptied it, so it won't need to be replaced so soon in the future!).
That shirt is absolutely fantastic. Loved LimeWire
That was an easy fix Steve. . . as you yourself said. I learnt something and went a way happy but maybe pump up the video output a bit. I guess that keeping 'em coming is how you grow the channel/subs no?
Why haven't I done this... this would be so helpful in DaVinci Resolve.
Love the videos Steve. I would love to set up a workshop / desk like yours. Can you share what equipment you have please.......
His second channel has a walkthrough of his setup, i think!
Steve! Please remember this little capacitor things is for CAPACING the ENERGY that flows thru your tester pins TO. So, when you shortly testing smd capacitors it is okay they are beeping at start for few seconds untill tester pins CHARGES capacitor, then fully working and charged capacitor stop beeping cause his resistance grows! So, do not test capacitors short time (even more - capacitors must be unsolded to test them correctly!), just test them 10 more seconds!
1:27 it’s way too cap 😂😂 I love the songs, best part of your videos imo
Nice easy one for a change, and a nice catch.
Amazing fix Steve those caps are pain they’re designed to fail 😊
That airflow had me on edge, at least the problem showed it self
I mentioned once before when working with such tiny components place a toothpick or something else small and tape it down that way it won't blow away.
THey do make Surface mount component Heated Soldering Tweezers. No air needed. I luv them
It's far easier to use a soldering iron to remove those SMD caps (and resistors) it takes literally 2 seconds rather than farting around with a hot air gun and risking blowing other components off the board.
got the bigger brother of your's I use it for games, 1 of those things you don't need untill you have it and start going into all it can do
I invested in the 32 button Stream deck, never regretted the decision and have come to rely upon it. However some of the third party plugins can be troublesome.
A nice, overall clean fix, and I love your Cannibal Village wall paper from Secret of Monkey Island
Seeing you solder gives me confidence that my soldering is not that bad :D
Your raps are rad. Fax no cap.
Great fix! I'm off to have a quick look at mine, now 🤓👍
That Limewire company picnic tee shirt! *chef's kiss*
Come to watch the fix stayed for the stupid autofocus! 😄 Keep doin what you do Steve!
Great T-Shirt!
Steve, is there a story behind the t-shirt????
Limewire is back??
Hell yea, can we get a little bit of napster too?
Love, love, love your videos!! Thank you
Love watching your channel, well done Steve. ..AAAAAAHHH !!!!😁👍
El Gano in Spanish means He Won. And you did. Great job Steve.
I watch for the cool raps. The repairs are just a bonus.
When are you touring?
What caused the capacitor to even fail in the first place? Probably going to have to do this repair again in the future
Bit of a voltage spike, cap acted as fuse perhaps? Kinda weird to see component failure like that in what is essentially a keypad... my first guess would also be the cable, USB connector, or it's contact with the pcb.
Then again, I guess the OLED switches draws far more power than a regular keypad or keyboard would.
Nice design on those buttons!
Warp 10 hot air speed steve gets me laughing every single time he ends up yeeting the component across the room hahaha😂😂
I loved the AAAAAHHH sound when the cap flew off!
Can we please make this the new wilhelm scream?
No Captain bodge for 2 weeks!!! Hope you're ok mate!
It’s beeping as the capacitors draw current through the meter to charge up. When they are full for the voltage the meter tests at then it stops. Bigger caps -> longer beep.
love the shirt
Nice Bush!
Love the tshirt 🍋🟩☎️
Love the shirt 🍋
Love the "Bush" dvd ❤
Nice to know, be the first place I look if mine ever fails!

This was music to my ears. 😊😁
Love the shirt!!
Nice fix! Been a fan for a long time and never asked - what is that yellow bear that appears on-screen for like 5 frames and says something monosyllabic?
I'm loving your shirt :D
We have the EXACT SAME Corsair deskmat!
That t-shirt made me smile
Quality wallpaper
Oh no, i discovered i had not subscribed yet. Subscribed now.
when i clicked the video my pc's anti-virus program gave an alert because of your t-shirt. nice one tho👍
Need that lime wire tshirt in my life 🤩🤩
Nice fix Steve.
Can you pls employ your troubleshooting and soldering skills to fix the social unrest in England right about now? Cheers
would have added some solder to the red cable.
Great videos love your content what type of wire you use for trace repair and where do you get it from?
Lime wire company picnic ? Steve what dont we know? Lol. I was more FrostWire 😂😂
Why are you using aluminium tape für heat protection - aluminum transfers heat quite well. Use capton and try to leave an air gap.
mokey island desktop , i love it !!
Nice work!
I actually managed to guess one correctly for once, from what I know the whole windows not knowing a usb was plugged in was a bit of a giveaway that something was wrong along the power input section thingy (real technical term)
nice tshirt, Ste.
Steve!! Where are you??
Omg Limewire ❤ What's next Kazaa
Any chance the aluminum tape was making contact across the wires? To account for the strange beeps?
Isn't the point in a smaller ceramic cap in parallel with a larger cap to filter off high-frequency transients when traditionally an electrolytic with higher ESR would have been used for the larger cap, meaning it's redundant to use two ceramics next to each other, increasing the potential for failure?
@03:48 you forgot to wiggle the wire 😉
i often find breaks in usb cables that are fine untill you wiggle them 😛
Hi I have stumbled across some late 80s early 90s retro handheld gaming devices you might want to take a look at. One of them is golden axe. Please let me know if your interested i think it would be great to see them in a video.
I have a Carrera go slot car track and I have a rare lap counting piece that stopped working I bet you could fix it!
I want that Limewire shirt.
So are you gonna reset the "burnt plastic counter" as the isolation of the red wire is melted?
Hello steveyfixy. Have you had a chance to look at my Sony wm20 I sent you in may please 😅
cool t shirt steve
