I agree. The problem was that Frazier couldn't see beyond Ali's fight promotional tactics, something that he applied to most of the guys he fought. Joe took it all too seriously, even though he would always dis Ali by calling him "Clay."
maybe, but there are limits. The whole 'it was just for publicity' excuse is overused at times. Ali didnt like it when fighters called him 'Clay' for example. Nah nah its just for publicity....

For all of those who constantly say that Ali "mistreated" Frazier and treated him like dirt or whatever, just watch the sequence starting at 28:40. Ali says something to the effect of how he said unflattering things about Joe to promote the fight, but he actually did have great respect for Joe both as a man and a fighter. The problem is that many from younger generations were misinformed by that propaganda HBO film "Thriller in Manila" and not realizing that they were ill-informed. That inane doc even took excerpts from this telecast, particularly the brawl between Joe and Ali, to distort history and mislead the public into thinking that Ali was a villain, but that's far from true. He was actually a very classy guy. Actually, it was Joe who started that melee by making the less than intelligent remark about Ali having to go to the hospital.
misinformed is a great word for it. There are many interviews where ali both compliments frazier and acknowledges that he talks so much trash to promote fights. His dick cavet interview with frazier is a good example where he does both
@@lampini Yeah. I love that interview with Cavett. A British talk show host is also on the telecast and asks Ali why do he and Joe always insult each other, and Ali replies in a hilarious manner, "Because the Garden is sold out, that's why!"

when Ali was prohibited from Boxing, it was Joe Frazier who helped him get back. Lent him money, gave him emotional support, and worked behind the scenes to get Ali back to the ring! Ali was broke and by this time.
I know when Ali called Joe "ignorant " on this telecast, Joe was actually the instigator. He started it by trying to tease Ali about going to the hospital after the first fight.
The strength and ability of these men to endure the physical punishment demonstrated / dished out in this fight was incredible and extraordinary. Their boxing styles were very, very different and a testament to their conditioning, skills, determination and pride. As Elmer Anderson wrote Smokin'Joe was a fighting machine that night. However in my opinion so was Ali. As BVT wrote "I cannot help watching this without thinking how phenomenal both of them truly were." Roland

What an era. . Rest in Peace Muhammed and Joe. X
The quality and skill isn't there either. These two immortals had that. Their fights were such good fights from that perspective as well, the quality of the boxing.
"I don't think this one is clownin at all.....I think that Ali is probably clownin; but there is no question in my mind that Joe Frazier is not clownin." LMFAO!! 😆
It was a completely stupid thing for Frazier to say- that Ali had gone to the hospital. Frazier went to the Hospital for one week, and then returned to the hospital for three more weeks. And because he had such bad brain concussion his body was shutting down. And without a month of care he would have died. Ali went to have his jaw checked, and then he went home.
@@coreysmith1338 That's bullshit. All you have to do is look at their faces after the fight and you can see who endured the most damage. All Ali had was a puffed jaw but Frazier's entire head was swollen like a balloon.
@@TheSands83 It depends on how you look at it. If you place great emphasis on knockdowns, you would go with Frazier. But if you go on connected punches, you'd go with Ali, because he had the most. But Ali won the subsequent two rematches.

Never seen an Ali fight where he set to punch with such punishing power as this one. The beating Frazier got was unreal even though he gave a lot back. For me this was the most brutal of the 3 fights especially for joe.
Cosell and ABC totally wanted this to happen for ratings. Please. Two people known to hate each other reviewing their whole fight, sitting next to each other. What a setup.
Nah, Joe was really pissed. I suppose he had some insecurities about being uneducated, and when Ali tapped his weakness by calling him "ignorant," Joe lost it. But the truth is that Joe did instigate that, and for him to tease someone about going into the hospital, especially when it was him and not Ali who spent quality time there, was a less than intelligent thing to do.
I was watching a title fight I can't remember exactly which one but Ali&Frazier were in the audience sitting together admiring that their presence had the entire arena mesmerized
I remember watching this on ABC's Wide World of Sports (which was the best sports tv back in the day) and it still is just as good to watch after all these years, but to me this was a "disaster waiting to happen", here you have the two best heavyweights of that time sitting next to each other for over an hour (Cosell should have been in between them) watching and commenting on their first closely contested title fight, only days before the rematch, and no one thought this might get heated ??? there was no real security there to stop this scuffle and thankfully no one got hurt and the rematch went on as scheduled, in my opinion Joe won the first fight and Ali won the rematch, truly great stuff from the 70's !

@@elloello_erm But where do you set the limit? Or to put it another way, how did Ali go "too far" with Frazier?

Cause it's the truth.
His dick cavet interview with frazier is a good example where he does both
joe jones k
@@lampini Yeah. I love that interview with Cavett. A British talk show host is also on the telecast and asks Ali why do he and Joe always insult each other, and Ali replies in a hilarious manner, "Because the Garden is sold out, that's why!"
what are you talking about? Ali called him a Boy and a servant of White People and even when gone he says you have to be a Devil to represent Joe. Ali had none of his good humour or cheekiness here, he was full of spite and self-contradictory remarks making little sense. Joe was not gonna sit there and be called an Uncle Tom and illiterate all night long. You are completely biased in your take on the situation, sorry...
