Two of the greatest boxers of all time having a wrestling match on a live news program while Howard Corsell remains seated without even uncrossing his legs is one of the greatest moments ever caught on film
I watched this live with my dad. I was 6 or 7. My dad was jumping up and down. My jaw was on the floor. What a glorious time to be alive. (Edit here in March 2024). I cannot believe the arguments and ugliness and ignorance this comment exposed. Yes, I vividly remember this. I remember all sorts of things from the late 60's and early 70's. I remember moving to our new house in 1971 at 4 years old. I remember my dad bringing home his first company car, a brand new bergundy 1969 Buick Skylark wagon. I remember going down a sidewalk to a restaurant near a neighborhood of a house my parents rented. I talked to my mom about it a few years ago and she told me there was no way I should remember that because it was in 1968. I remember getting a basketball and sleeping bag for my 5th birthday. I vividly remember Watergate being on the radio and television for what seemed an eternity. I remember being home with my mother the day they announced President Johnson's death on TV. I'd say that I remember everything about my life from age 4 on.
@@musiclover-jy8ot 26 January 1974 was when this interview took place. It was just weeks before their fight. During this interview, the two of them were there to answer questions about their first fight in 1971. You can see from their expressions that Ali is totally into the fight mentally, his eyes are laser focused on what's being shown and in his head he is shadow boxing the moves he was doing. Joe was also looking at the screen but not with the same intent as Ali. The two exchange remarks over the fight and what happened afterwards, but it became a bit too heated for Joe and that's when the scuffle ensued.
Sounded like real worry in Ali’s voice. Looked more like a little brother trying to keep his big brother from starting something that couldn’t be undone. Like, “Come on, Joe! This ain’t the time!”

🌐 When a simple man is put on tv most of his lifetime and praised by so many you should ask yourself, what is the purpose behind this demigod? The social engineering around Ali was incredible. The media hype built him up so audience viewers became entranced hypnotized and mesmerized from the entertainment and viewed his fights as iconic historic events even when he was losing and being rocked senseless. Ali was chosen by the system and turned into a left wing political pawn, that's why he has an $85 million dollar museum in Louisville KY. Where is Louis Marciano Frazier and Holmes museums? At least Joe Louis was buried in Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors unlike Clay who dodged. Elijah Mahomud convinced Clay to dodge cause he was their meal ticket, so Clay faked being Minister so he could dodge Nam while preaching cancel culture towards the white man who he called "Devil's." But it all backfired. He thought he was going to be gifted special exemption cause he was champ, Nope. 51,038 white soldiers vs 7,243 black soldiers were killed during Vietnam war so don't complain about racial inequality. Jackie Robinson said, "Ali's stand was hurting his race who were, unlike him, fighting in Vietnam. The tragedy to me is, Cassius has made millions of dollars off the American public, and now he's not willing to show his appreciation to a country that's giving him, in my view, a fantastic opportunity." At that time being drafted was the Law. When Clay refused induction someone had to take his place. What if that someone was You? I served in Nam shoulder to shoulder with black men who were "The Greatest" authentic heroes of America, not that privileged two-faced bigoted racist who turned his back to his own people once his boxing license was reinstated. The lottery chose me right outta highschool and my parents didn't have money to send me to Canada or bribe a doctor for medical excuse. Blame the politicians and military industrial complex, not the young innocent teenage kids who were family, friends and neighbors. Good men who did their best in a bad situation who were sent there to fight for the ideal of freedom of people everywhere. Dad told me, "son, it's the's law, go fight hard, and represent your country well." So i fought hard, and represented my flag proudly. What would You have done? Donald J. T. avoided Nam and the world hates him, Cassius Clay resists and becomes a famous civil rights activist and legendary antiwar hero. Today BLM is painted on every basketball court and I'm supposed too become less white and reprogrammed, something is twisted. Ali's legend is far greater than the actual reality of his career lik' gettin rocked by 185 lb fighters and outscoring flat-footed sluggers. I stepped through those ropes 24 times and it's not that difficult after first several fights. What's difficult is working a common job 10 hours a day for 50 years to pay mortgage and put food on the table for your children.

Cosell interviewing Sammy Davis Jr. at a big Las Vegas fight in the mid-'70's: Howard: "Sammy, how do you see this fight?" Sammy (without missing a beat): "Through my one good eye." Cosell was speechless.
Dennis: "Howard, I think I'm going to get more out of it by the two of them sitting together" Also Dennis: "Certainly we never expected that to happen, we never expected two of them to get physical"

As if Ali was trying to "save" both of them.. please.. Ali did that out of aggression. He had enough control not to throw a punch, but not enough not to engage

@@holliswilliams8426 Ali mentions the followers of Frazier and insinuates that he's their 'good boy'. Absolutely no connotation of animals and everything to do with the political climate of the day. Ali felt he was a champion for his people and Frazier was a pawn for white people.
I see it the same way. By grabbing him quickly he avoided a real fight. He realized he was sitting, and Joe was standing over him. If Ali didn’t grab him, he was in danger of getting pummeled. Joe wasn’t cooling down. It was enough of a threat that Ali was in the right to hold him.
Nope. I saw it... I thought it was classless activity on the the part of Ali. But that was Ali back then. From time to time he did engage in classless behavior against frazier. another black man. But since then, I've grown to respect both fighters. Ali was a great fighter. No question about that. His antics made for really good television. And thats all it was. He even said himself people would watch his fights with the hope to see him lose. I was one of them. After Ali left the game, heavyweight boxing was never the same. It was excellent made for television drama. To this day, I love them both. I shook hands with frazier here in Atlanta back in the 90's. Great guy. They were both great guys who defined an era of boxing that is long lost and never has been repeated.

ESPN is sleazy AF, they wanted something to happen obviously, of course it actually getting physical never crossed their minds... oh and i have some bridges to sell you, brooklyn bridge here for $10,000...
i think its sleezy. these men make a living with their hands and they intentionally put their chairs touching and had them recall the fight. they seem to take pride in the fact that they did that to get extra out of the show. just thinking about their own ratings and not these men's careers. disrespectful in my opinion
I think when Ali's bro came up, Ali realized it could go left easy. So to prevent his brother and Joe from clashing he engaged Frazier knowing he could diffuse a real conflict by directly engaging and dispersing the energy in the least harmful way...and he would also be able to continue to antagonize Frazier, at the same time. He never stands until Frazier asks his bro, "you in this too"? He didn't look like he was going to even get up til it looked like something else might pop off.
Yeah apparantly they were scary nation of islam people or something. We all know what angry islamists are like. Specially to black people, but I think Ali was an islamist himself. A lot of black people in america are. Islam countries were cutting their genitals off and using them as slaves for about a thousand years longer than white people, its weird how they forgave them but cant forgive white people, or even go to war for America.
You’re right. It looked like Ali didn’t take this seriously at all, but wanted to create some hype before the match. Ali was fully in control of his emotions. Frazier May he been the more dignified man, but he wasn’t in control here.
I knew your statement would bring out haters. Projecting their own prejudices onto Frazier and Ali. Just like it was in the 70s, i remember well. They hated Ali for being himself. They hated his honesty. They hated his anti war stance. His stance against govt corruption and brutality towards innocent people, black or white. What cracks me up is they are still salty all this years later. Noone really knows joes inner thoughts. My sister and bro in law met joe at casino in oz ans recorded their chat. Joe said he loved Ali and he felt that Ali was fighting against the govt, society and Frazier. There was more but thats enough. Good on you for your positive vibe.
I think Joe exercised restraint because he was very angry. Ali was not sure how serious or angry was. I think the grabbing move was partly out of fear that Joe was about to deliver a bare knuckle left hook. Ali obviously had no intentions of getting into a fight in the studio. But Joe was mad enough that he could have decided to start letting his fist fly even on the ground. But he managed to control it just enough. If he would have Howard would have continued giving commentary like it was a real match. I swear he cracked me up during all this.
When on Earth, Ali mocked Joe's stronger African features, and called him 'dumb.' Ali purchased a small toy Gorilla and before the national press during a training session in Manila, would punch the Gorilla continually in the face and call him Joe Frazier.

I find his faith inspiring, the islam countries used africans for slaves for like thousands of years more than white people did, cut their genitals off, butchered them, used them as cattle and for Africans to be able to forgive them and to join their faith, gives me hope that one day they can forgive their fellow white americans for using them as slaves for what was in comparison a blink of an eye.
If it wasn't for Joe, Ali would have never got his boxing licence back. Joe looked after Ali when he was barred from the ring, Joe gave him money etc etc and pressured the boxing commission to let Ali box again. Then Ali shat on Joe from a great height and Joe never forgave him.

The tragedy to me is, Cassius has made millions of dollars off the American public, and now he's not willing to show his appreciation to a country that's giving him, in my view, a fantastic opportunity."
At that time being drafted was the Law.

Dennis Lewis: "We didn't expect that to happen."
Also Dennis Lewis: 1:38
He was enjoying it.
He knew he was gonna get paid good
His face was like..😃
Wait I thought that was Howard costell
Ali is laughing from heaven seeing this.... he really was something
When on Earth, Ali mocked Joe's stronger African features, and called him 'dumb.' Ali purchased a small toy Gorilla and before the national press during a training session in Manila, would punch the Gorilla continually in the face and call him Joe Frazier.
@electronwave4551 Bro, you're talking like Ali was dening his proper africains roots, too? Him, joking on Joe was kinda way to make more money. What's calling now marketing.
@@alhamdoulilah3991you're defending someone's irrational behavior (rage) by calling it marketing (greed) and then claiming that he's in heaven, while not mentioning his opponent having anything to do with heaven. You're weird.
"If God ever calls me to a holy war, I want Joe Frazier beside me" Muhammad Ali.
joe was a devout christian so they probably wouldnt be on the same side
Laoch not sure what you're getting at, we aren't in the days of the crusades anymore. besides, that kind of misses the point of why this quote is profound
@@joeg579 Because Ali wouldn't fight for the USA, his home town, none of it? he specifically said he would only ever fight for Islam. So by his own belief he could never fight on the same side of a war as Frazier, ever. His comment should be understood to be "If i ever get a call to muslim jihad, I hope that I do not have to kill frazier and he can convert and fight on my side with me against the other faiths". I mean he is called Muhammad after his profit. I find his faith inspiring, the islam countries used africans for slaves for like thousands of years more than white people did, cut their genitals off, butchered them, used them as cattle and for Africans to be able to forgive them and to join their faith, gives me hope that one day they can forgive their fellow white americans for using them as slaves for what was in comparison a blink of an eye.

that waa the funniest part!!! 😂😂😂🥰🥰
“ Joe wasn’t to pleased about Ali calling him ignorant, now their in an entanglement “ 😂
🤣🤣🤣💀
😂😂😂😂
If it wasn't for Joe, Ali would have never got his boxing licence back. Joe looked after Ali when he was barred from the ring, Joe gave him money etc etc and pressured the boxing commission to let Ali box again. Then Ali shat on Joe from a great height and Joe never forgave him.
I don't get why people tolerated Ali's assholish taunts then nor why they still consider it cute
Cool story but everyone seen frasier on UA-cam in his old age show much love & respect to M. Ali 😎
It even extended to Joe's kids. They were bullied at school because Ali was the golden boy.
That's the way I saw it. No good deed goes unpunished. Ali could have been more respectful. Frazier deserved better.
@@guanjun1178 you hit on it Ali was the golden boy. He had a golden hue and had some pretty boy features . He was easier to market to the public as pretty sells. Sonny and Joe had the street look. George was a gloomy character at the time so naturally Ali had the advantage in the media market. Though George probably overtook him from another direction.
This was totally selling the fight Muhammad and Joe loved each other and had the up most respect for each other
“You in this too..?”
Joe was ready for anybody at that moment.
That part was dope!!
I kinda wish Joe swung on that dude lol

I was born in January 1973 and I'm kind of a young/old head...I didn't and still don't like how Mr. Joe Frazier was treated. Yes, I know as being supreme boxing legends, they stirred up the audience to get them excited to come to the fight, but I think Mr. Muhammed Ali was really mean to Joe even when Joe was still trying to be friendly....Mr. Joe "Smoking" Frazier was the man, give him respect and his flowers.
Cosell is hilarious he just goes straight into calling the fight🤣😂
Ali constantly tried to embarrass Joe, but Joe gave him money when he was broke and helped him get his license back when nobody else could.
I didn’t know anything about this, can you explain?
@@colonelsanders9637 there's a documentary you can find on UA-cam that talks about the contributions Joe made to Ali when he was going thru hard times. Joes son talks about the humiliation his father felt for years by Ali's insults even after he helped him. He hated Ali for a long time and ridiculed him after he got sick with Parkinson's.
Joe had a heart of Gold he was a nice man
No he didnt. He just gave a statement support to give back his license just like everyone else. And that was when he became the champ.
Joe started all trash talk to hype the fight of Alis comeback by calling him Cassius. He opened a door he couldnt shut.
But as a fighter and person Joe was as great as Ali. Maybe ali suprass him in fame.
Billy Jack... thanks for detailing the history for those who don't know. Can't say I agree with Ali being a traitor and coward but your discription of the history of those two men is 100%. I'm from Philly and I've been to Frazier's gym many times when it was open. I met him a few times, he was truly a gentleman. 👍🏽
“Sat down… QUICK JOE!!!” 😂😂😂
"you look good Joe, you don't have to explain" Man funny without trying.

Ali is the type of guy that jokes to far then say I'm play I'm playing. Then when things go south he still ready.

The way Ali jumped up and grabbed him 😂😭
He was saving his brother. Ali was sitting down and when his brother came up on Joe, Ali could see Joe making a fist. Joe was about to pop him and Ali stood up and grabbed him before he could do anything.

Staged
@@Top_G_98 Even if it was, the tussle was real and Ali even got a good Thai clinch and a solid knee to the gut it appeared. I don't think that was fake nor their beef, but the scene was definitely "staged" to create some tension between guys who already didn't like each other.
@@Top_G_98 It definitely looked staged
"Monday night Joe, you be there. Monday night, you be on time." Ali's final words on the night.
Frazier played right into Ali's hands, didn't he?🙂
Actually, Ali said "Monday night, boy!", then Frazier responded "You'll be on time!"
Joe: 'Are you in this too?' .. lol what a savage!
Haha possibly my favourite moment out of so many golden lines, Smoke didn't even flinch, just cocked the head around and 'You in this too?' Then Ali leaps up 'QUICK JOE'
