Having been a "lorry" driver here in the UK since 1975 and driving "articulated" lorries since 1981, I find the American trucks fascinating and beautiful to look at after some of the dull cab over lorries that we here in Britain drive. I love the conventional long nosed trucks you have the pleasure of driving over there in USA. The Peterbilt you featured in this video was a stunning bit of kit. The auto shift arrangement on the steering column has been used for quite some time here. I have been driving a Mercedes Actros for the past 8 years with the same idea for selecting Drive or Reverse. Automatic lorries are becoming very common here in UK . Can't imagine why anyone would want a manual option when the truck can do the work. Most come with a manual mode anyway if you choose to work harder. Love your videos and comments and already a big fan of Indiana Jack.
You should have seen the sparkle in my eyes when I saw this video. I drove a 2010 579 until 2014 when I retired. It was home sweet home for my wife and I after she came to the States from the Philippines. In fact, she gave the truck the name "Aurora" and that is how we always refer to it to this day. We retired to the Philippines in November 2014 and we miss Aurora all the time. The outside looks pretty much unchanged and the interior is as roomy as ever. Our set up was very much like this one and we lived comfortably day in and day out. I like the addition of the built-in refrigerator. We had two 12V coolers, so the frig would free up some space. Thanks fora trip down memory lane (ours was the same color as well). I always look forward to your postings. God bless.
Great video. I think if you had that truck in the last couple of years you would still be trucking full time. The transmission shifter is in a great place , out of the road for getting into the bunk etc.
Nice demonstration Jack. Very impressive and beautiful Peterbilt. They really are first class. I like the shift selector where they put it. Something else out of the way and streamlined. Thank you for taking us trucking in a gorgeous new Pete. Like you, I love trucks.
CrimeVid these aren’t automatics like your car these are standard transmissions like you’d find in a traditional truck but instead of a stick coming out of the top you have two electric motor that do the shifting.
@@Jimmypupkin Constant mesh gearbox, the gear change is computer controlled. No torque converter so fuel consumption is as good if not better than driver controlled.
CrimeVid No, automated shift transmissions are much more fuel efficient. These aren’t automatic as in a car, rather a manual transmission that the truck automatically shifts at the optimum time.
I used to avg 9.5-10 mpg when I had a 2019 579 mid roof, that had the 12 speed auto, 455hp MX-13 and a 63 mph governor, put 50k miles on it before it before they moved me into a freightliner cascadia
I was thinking about getting another Volvo, like my old 2008, but I've been hearing horror stories about service and parts for them lately. I've almost certainly decided my next truck will be a Paccar.
Keep doing the videos Jack. Since you went off road I can't find any one to follow,(suggestions please) You were the very first trucker video I watched and thank you for all the fun adventures. John Mullaney 38 years of trucking!
I still love trucks i traded 18 wheels years ago for wings i fly for a living i been following you for years jack keep the video's coming love see how trucks are progressing in new technology
I have driven several Pete's and like them. The shifter is in a convenient spot. A lot better in my opinion than on the dash. Pretty hard to compare MPG's when we don't know what HP the engine is rated at. Another great video! Maybe you are going to want to start driving again, now that you have finally been behind the wheel of a good truck! LOL
Most companies aren’t building trucks manual anymore unless customer specifically orders a manual. Trucking industry is going full auto now. Started few years ago...
Black Mack is doing just fine. I was just watching him temporarily for a friend of mine but considering adopting him. I gave him back to her now I am cat-less.
I just read about the Volvo I-See transmission that learns and memorises routes and their topography to optimise action... Does Peterbilt have same kind of stuff? I know, many are so old school they become sick of new features but I'm actually very interested... Waiting to get free of that steering wheel, too!
I have a question so I live in Arizona right so how come I see a bunch of truckers always driving to Arizona. Is it just because we have a bunch of people here?
I Like it....the Shifter Spot is Better than the Volvo I was Driving..it was on the seat, made it hard to kick the feet around to get in the sleeper.....All trucks just take a little getting used to...But I would Sure Take this one!!
Would have liked to hear more about the specs Jack... Hp, fuel capacity, jake brake, but all in all, Thanks for the peek at a new Pete..... Safe travels bro.
I drive a 20 579 with automatic, it has a Paccar engine and Pete's transmission. I wish it had an Allison trans they shift easier, glide into the grears.
Thanks for the tour Jack, I love trucks too, even if I an retired. I think some of the Volvos have a transmission switch like that, I know John (JBG Travels) new Volvo has that shift. He graduated from a 2013 Freightliner Cascadia with 10 speed manual, and he wanted Auto shift so bad he could taste it LOL., however he is one of ADL's best drivers I believe. I'm not sure but I think the Frieghtliner Cascadia has a similar shift on the right side of the steering column, you put it in gear using the switch, then the handle is like a paddle shifter so you can shift by sound or by hand but it has no clutch, I consider it auto shift as well. You asked so I gave you my best opinion. /// I got your joke about the storage box right away LOL... I've always like Peterbilt, and this seems to be an exceptional truck. I surmise the real test will be when it's pulling a near capacity loaded trailer. If some of my spelling of these trucks is not correct, please over-look it as I did not bother to look them up on Google, I took my best stab at it, but I think a smart guy like you will know what I'm talking about. BTW, that blue color is pretty much my favorite color of any truck I've seen. I believe Ford still paints Robin Egg Blue which is lighter but just as pretty and Freightliner puts out a nice blue color too, but lighter in color. Also the interior lay-out of the truck you showed was very nice. Had a very nice dash board, roomy and quiet.
I drive the 579, But the 2018 Model/ double sleeper. Been driving mine for 7 months, I have 84K on her now. the review looked, pretty much the same. I truly love the shifting of the truck, and the 12 speed, trans, really powers up the hills. even with 44,500 lbs. and paddle shifting down, to catch a lower gear faster, for a better climb rate. leaves everyone else behind. got a question. I pass your exit all the time. is it okay, to come into your yard, with someone else company truck?. Just want to say Hi.
PB looked real good, however reminds me of that"new"car smell that hooks you everytime, that is until you see the monthly payments, would imagine you can really jack the price up by optioning it out with lots of bells and whistles,BTW what year did you show that new engine?
Great looking truck. Was that leather interior? Transmission shifter was different but no worse than any other truck. Just different style. I always heard they were one of the best built trucks on the road.
Hay jack my truck is a year younger than that one I call her scarlet and I have been driving it for about 2 half years and I don't mind the auto shifter just miss the old manual shifter I'm like you i miss the old ones more
I drove 2019 International with same engine and automatic transmission, did not like it, especially that bells and safety whistles. Went back to manual and happy.. Some people like automatic and some do manuals, I'm a manual person. Safe travels to all.
You ain't kidding, my truck broke down 3 months ago and dispatch gave me a loaner for my trip to Indianapolis. She was a kenworth t660 with a 13 speed. Didn't know how to drive it but managed to figure it out. After that trip I told dispatch "Yeah your not getting this back." Lol
Hello Jack , enjoying the 579 Peterbilt . Do you as a long time truck have a opinion on the x 15 engine . I have heard both plus an minus on it .Take Care ,Be safe . 👍👍😊✌
Hello Jack; Thanks for the tour of the Pete.(very impressive). My I suggest a possible future video of the Truck show in "Greencaslltle Virginia " in October. Beautiful truck I dont have a problem with where the shifter is. But there is a few things that needs addressed. 1 no microwave place I saw. 2 if you spending that much time in it your down time a tv would be nice. 3 saw no cb. 4 it's not sitting out in front of my house. Have a great weekend.

I have to disagree this is far from a big boy truck ,its not a manual it's all plastic and it's not a straight piped 2 stack and big boys dont need all the drvr assist braking bullshit ,💪😎
great video Jack the 579 is my favorite new tractor. They are nice looking, have very responsive handling, tight turn radius, ride nice, and a lot of room. it is nice to see more videos coming out from you. Always a pleasure.
Nice Peterbilt, thanks for the tour.
I've never driven an automatic, looking forward to the opportunity.
Enjoy the ride,Jack, rubberside down....
Great video. I think if you had that truck in the last couple of years you would still be trucking full time. The transmission shifter is in a great place , out of the road for getting into the bunk etc.
Single Bunk? What's the sense of having the loft then? just more area to heat and cool. Id rather have the mid roof, running single or team.
When I drove over the road, I always took my boots off before going in the sleeper compartment.
Preach on brother Beavis!
Another classic Jack video!
weres jack gone did he pass away
Is he still around? I haven't seen any newer videos
Nice demonstration Jack. Very impressive and beautiful Peterbilt. They really are first class. I like the shift selector where they put it. Something else out of the way and streamlined. Thank you for taking us trucking in a gorgeous new Pete. Like you, I love trucks.
I think the shifter is in a good location. Too many trucks have them down beside the seat or up on the dash, so you are reaching for them to use it.
I have the 2018 579, I'm 6'4" tall. I love mine
Nice truck but I want one in a manual transmission(13 speed).
I agree though I would probably get it in a 15 or 18 speed.
years ago the word was that automatic transmissions caused heavier fuel use, is that still the case ?

7.2 MPG, Jack? I would like to see what that Pete will get when it is hooked up to the mothership running the max 40 tons.

@@loganmohr1185 Wow! Do you think that the 12 speed auto made a difference in the fuel economy?
Yeah, I'm betting it did, plus that truck had really low rear gear so it would cruise at 63 mph at 1100 rpm
@@loganmohr1185 In the 1990's it was called "gear fast, run slow". Tall gearing favors today's low RPM, high torque engines.
If you are 6’5” that means the top of Little Guys head is at your belly button!
I was thinking about getting another Volvo, like my old 2008, but I've been hearing horror stories about service and parts for them lately. I've almost certainly decided my next truck will be a Paccar.
Nothing but issues lol
Don't get the bendix radar, this Pete is awful with it. Going back to freightliner
I could see you driving that truck into all the TA's and Loves around
Thanks for the ride Jack your Awesome keep the videos coming thanks again

The whole truck is upside down

Love the truck. With all the electronics you get used to where ever the shifter is!
JACK I LOVE IT!!!!!!!! SO MANY SMILES... THANKS FOR SHARING
Jack. Wish you Thanks giving. MERRY CHRISTMAS TO YOU. AND You're family.. Love from New Zealand. Xx
Nice to see they didn’t cheap out and actually got the sears seats
I absolutely love these trucks! I'd maybe like to have one someday with an 18 or 13 speed.
How does it go? They forgot the stick.
hey Jack hows the black cat doing? Can we get an update please?
Black Mack is doing just fine. I was just watching him temporarily for a friend of mine but considering adopting him. I gave him back to her now I am cat-less.
Can you show the process of you booking a load of the DAT load board

On my second 579 good truck first one put 550000 had isx . Just got new one with x15 and is one month old
Does the refrigerator have a safety latch on the door to keep it from piping open on a bumpy road like current models of Volvo? 🤠
How’s Shnieder trainer job goin Jack?

Very nice truck, cant wait to get back to driving again.
Great review. I hope you eventually get to at least see the new Autocar. It is not a trash truck but a reentry of Autocar into cross county trucking.
So how did that truck got there if it never driven before ?
Test Drove a 579. Very comfy and quite indeed
Okay, I got to know! Does it have heated seats?
just off the top of my head, the shifter being where it is I could easily get confused with wiper handle while driving down the road
I thought peterbilts had oval holes for a design in the rims have they stopped making those type of rims
The Pete wheels with the ovals are optional but I don't know the cost difference.
I drive a 20 579 with automatic, it has a Paccar engine and Pete's transmission. I wish it had an Allison trans they shift easier, glide into the grears.

A lot of things inside are from European DAF also owned by Paccar the same engine
Hey jack great video, loved that color on that truck, what’s the horsepower?
What’s the price of one of these trucks?
The MSRP of one of these brand new trucks, will cost between $150,000 and $180,000.
The only thing missing was a trailer hooked behind you Jack and 8 minutes on your clock to get to a rest stop.
Is that your truck
You forgot to test the auto pilot and collision avoidance.
I think that the shift lever won't hold up to the rigors of daily abuse.

You had the Panther truck b-roll - I drove by Panther’s headquarters today. 👍🏻
Wow I love that truck very nice and very amazing and loaded truck and very nice storage also great truck jack
I wouldn't have it because it ain't got a shift pole and that collision mitigation system ain't nothing more annoying or dangerous on a truck
great video Jack the 579 is my favorite new tractor. They are nice looking, have very responsive handling, tight turn radius, ride nice, and a lot of room. Nice cab, jury still out on that X-15. Ask K.R.
Love the video, but I fail to see the difference between this Pete and the last 5 or 6 model years, aside from the engine...
