    I'm starting my own reef tank in September, I'm using all this time to do all my research and visit different aquatics shops to get a real feel for it. You have really helped me with a lot, and I now feel fairly confident on starting my little nano reef tank soon. Cannot wait!

    Just want to thank you for these helpful videos and links to buy the equipment for a saltwater aquarium. I am barely starting to get into the saltwater hobby with a nano aquarium. I have been a freshwater hobbyist since I first started when I was a kid, so it will be a challenge for me to know what to do with everything that has to do with a saltwater aquarium.

    Thanks for showing your way man. I’m new in reef tank and I’ve been going through little issues here and there, but for last month, I’m only battling with back algae which I’m controlling with reducing light intensity and hours. But anyways. I learn a lot from your videos

    With just a bit of code, you can have your skimmer automatically shut off any time your return is turned off, and then put a delay on the skimmer turning back on. This has really reduced the amount of skimmer overflows my tank experiences. You could do the same for the powerheads as well. Also, holy crap, I want that inline pump. I have to heft up the entire brute can to dump in the last couple gallons.
    Defer 005:00 Then ON
    If Output Return1_6_3 = OFF Then OFF
    Defer 005:00 Then ON

    Great video as always! Interested to see your new technique! I plumbed my return so I can close off the sump and pull straight from a bucket and the overflow has a similar setup to allow the overflow to go directly into buckets as well. Makes changes faster but I still pay high prices for premixed salt water from the store...definitely need to look into an RO setup.

    I also do small weekly changes. About 10 gallons at a time.
    I do also run biopellets but only about 25% what it calls for. That with my skimmer and fuge keeps the 200 low in nitrates (about 5-10, leathers and shrooms don't like it when less than 5 in my tank)

    When i do do water changes (which is maybe every 3 months) i throw it out in the sun and make table salt with it. (Yes i do run it thru filters first.) tastes damn good too. Almost like a fleur de sal

    Thanks for the video. That was informative and re-affirmed what i have been doing as correct. I test my water parameters before a water change. If my levels are undetectable than what's the point right?

    • @MadHattersReef
      @MadHattersReef  6 років тому

      There could be elements that you don’t test for that could be depleted and by conducting a water change you are replenishing them for invertebrates coral and fish.

    Really enjoy your videos the editing is great and the content is even better I have two questions one about your video editing and one about water changes your video quality is really great and the colors pop nicely and look quite natural what do you use to film your tutorials? Secondly what do you think about water changes which are constant some people drip fresh salt water in and out of the tank constantly sort of doing a water change all the time i’ve heard this can keep your water quality more constant and have less fluctuation in the tank parameters.

    • @MadHattersReef
      @MadHattersReef  6 років тому

      As far as videos go I use iMovie and a Nikon camera. Which everything will be changing shortly because I’m getting a new iMac with Final Cut Pro and a new camera. I’ve been limping around with videos because my computer is maxed out and 6 years old.
      Big changes are coming soon from a video standpoint.
      Water changes I’ll be going to a auto change using a Neptune systems Apex and DOS pump.
      More to come...

    I really like that inline pump, but in reading the reviews, a lot of people are saying it has a 6” to 12” head room..is that true? I need it to go into a deep sink about 24”up from the sump. Can you tell me what you have found? Thanks and great videos!
