I took the plunge and got myself my first aquarium. Got the confidence to get into the hobby because of you. Thankyou for the effort you put into all the videos you make. Doubt I would of got into it without your advise
👋 could you do a video on each water parameter,, alk , cal nitrate etc and explain what to do and how to maintain,, and how to test ,, might help the noobs
Hey Alex, Just a quick thanks for the info. Lots of people doing reef info but you are my favorite. Easy to understand, clear, transparent. I love your British sense of humor, even if you folks over there don't know how to property speak English. I just started with an Evo13.5. Lots of upgrading and trying to kill as few things as possible in it.
Not gonna lie, the only time I do water changes is when I remove 10% to clean my filter media but I dont bother scrubbing the side walls since I want to provide more than enough algae for my grazers to nibble on. I clean my tank fully every…..3 months roughly since I want to grow more and more algae.
Check out BRS and their training vids. Lots to know if you want to have a balanced tank from live rock to substrate and water changes are just the begging.
dont know if im a bit paranoid but i test KH every day if not twice and then mag and calcium also had a odd situation with mag its dropping each day, the tank was not looking quite right and i tested for salinity etc everything fine. maybe my test kit was out for some reason so using a new one now. mag still just in the correct range but i like to have it higher than 1350 as a rule any ideas on whats using all the mag as i dont realy have that many corals in my 2by2 nano. thanx
I do a 30% water change everyweek. Some old school reefers get triggered when I tell them, but I'm running a mixed reef with softies, LPS and even some easy SPS and everything is thriving!
Alex can we just use the good old British black bin to mix saltwater in for water changes or does it have to be a food grade bin? I can't see it leeching chemicals at that temperature
What should I do i added a mushroom coral in my new tank after three weeks of cycling the parameters were stable and the fish were happy but my coral is leaning to the ground. It has also a little bit of some kind of film on it.. is it bad? What should I do?
I'm just start to the fish aquarium hobby and im been running the tank for like 2 months and I can't control the ammonia and the ph. I do the water changez sometimes it gets very clear and sometimes the water its so cloudy, any advice would be very helpful, thanks man
Don't worry about pH - it's the last thing you need to worry about early doors. Get yourself on a forum where you can have a back and forth discussion and post photos. But a few big water changes is where i'd start, assuming you have the basics like the right rock in your tank.
@@ReefDork thanks man, I appreciate it, im gonna do that and yes I have the right rocks, but man, its been like almost 3 months and i can't control it, sometimes I want to just throw all the water and switch to freshwater lol
@Reef Dork thank you. I'm not so sure though. He dives at him fast as he can go. The fish panics lol. I'll keep my eye on them. I love tank watching anyway. Awesome content btw.
Hands up who's in the top 10%!
At least 70% of us will say we're in the top 10%!
I’m in the top 100% 😉👌😂

Great to hear - well done for taking the plunge!
@4:49 reminds me of Coral Euphoria

I loved making the foam background for my reef tank, that's what I missed the most
Make a video of coldwater marine tanks? Would love to see that

😅
Already a great start to making a video every 2nd week. A great video for someone beginning their journey into the world of reefing.
#salty
Great advice - not in the top 10% (don't test enough lately)
Run. Run like the wind!
Great video and great advice! Keep up the great work!
Excellent video, informative, direct and concise. Bravo!
Iv now started up a reef tank 3 times now. I guess 3rd times the charm!
Even the thumbnail ... came is premium now ... 👌
i just subbed specifically cause you called them "wet pets"... lol i love it
Anyone else spot that the shop is the old reef dreams in winchester 😞 man I miss that shop they had some of the best corals

Good work Alex keep it up
Great video Alex!
Reef dork have you used the triton method yourself?
No, not my thing
Where did you get those holders for the Hanna kits? They seem great!
They're 3D printed - loads of companies make them but I bought mine from reefparts.co.uk

Great video Alex, have you ever thoughabout giving the zeovit system a go?
Thought about it but it's too much hassle for me
Nicely put not doing water changes is neither big or clever

I can't see it leeching chemicals at that temperature
Has to be food safe - hdpe or ldpe are OK
Hello mate, when to do first water changes during cycling period and how much would be enough,I just start the first tank?
There's no fixed rule as such, but as a rough guide, i'd probably do it when you have a nitrate reading and just do 10% every week from then on.
@@ReefDork thank you mate for your always quick respond, legend
Do you not mention NSW because you have no experience with it or do you not like it as an option?
Great video as always
Been running a canister filter for 8 years now and not had a single issue
Good advice Sir
Im bout to start a new tank
Did you get rid of the AquaOne minireef 120?
Yep, I only set it up for the video. I'm running a Fluval Evo 13.5 instead
While cycling new aquarium do you have to keep lights on or off, thanks
On is fine, just at low intensity - 10% ish
@@ReefDork thank you very much :-)

Post a photo on a forum but corals often don't do well that early on
Alex, let's not forget that we also grow algae
😅
Aside from the obvious price gap and extra parameters, what would you say in comparison to freshwater. I've had freshwater experience but not salt.
They take more maintenance but a basic saltwater tank isn't much harder than a freshwater tank.
Hmmm… Waterbox frag 6 footer🤔?

Pain in the 🐓
Very good
Can anyone tell me if it's normal for a cleaner shrimp to attack a royal dottyback? (The fish is innocent)
It's probably just trying to clean it

Local fish shop 😂😂😂 Guernsey, CI
My first ro cost me 400 in 1997
I have make every single mistake on the book but I never give up, 13 years reefing ....
I think everyone who stuck out the learning process has made every mistake in the book
👋🏻😏
1 year it's not even mature yet
second! 😛
first!!!!
What if you have a well and aren't on city water ?
Worth asking an American as we don't really use well water in the UK. But you can still run an ro/di filter, regardless of the source.
@@ReefDork pretty much straight from underground where I live , have to look into it
