Hi Travis I would have to say out of all of the videos that you have done this one is my favorite, simply because it helps beginners and people who are hesitating on getting into this hobby! Very good video and very well put together! I very much appreciate everything you do on this channel I am a huge fan!!
Great video. And in general I like the advice. With that said, I always hear that beginners should start with "Biginner" corals. Much of that opinion has to do with this thought that beginners may not have put enough research into the hobby before getting into it, or, that somehow their system parameters are going to not be stable. I think it is a short sighted view because the reality is that there is nothing stopping a beginner from keeping what most consider more advanced corals and doing so successfully. It is all about following the correct plan and if a beginner arms themselves with the proper knowledge and set-up, they can be just as successful with more "advanced" corals.
Travis Kibel, I agree, i am a beginner but i studied biology with a speciality in aquaric ecosystems and chemistry. I started with a 80L aqua medic blenny reef tank of 5 years old and added multiple sps species (montiporas, acroporas, seriatapora and stylophora) and all are doing quite well and are growing for weeks now. Its just about doing your research and following the care requirements for the corals. You want acro’s? Its not like all need strong flow and high lighting requirements, some or even most species do but even there are variations. The experienced reefer knows this but new people can study these things too
I forgot what the video was about the first time. Needed two views. Your tank is a happy place. Fish and corals look really happy. Monos have never looked this good in a freshwater tank. I'd be happy in your tank as a fish. Kudos to you man.
My god!! Look at the growth difference from 11 months ago to your 300g reef tank videos today. This is what I'm talking about, take the advice from people who have a successful reef tank, the results are proof that they are doing it right, and Travis my man, you are doing it right! Great advice in this video, a good refresher for me to avoid any mistakes in restarting my 125g reef tank.
Hey bud I really like the simplicity and the way you have setup the tank, I normally don’t comment at all but looking at your tank I must say I love the setup simple yet looks elegant. And great tips as I am just starting my tank next week and will run just with dry rock and live Hawaii black sand for 4 to six weeks before I add the pair of clowns in it and then slowly add corals starting with Anemone and then some other ones. Keep up the great work.
Another well timed and excellent source of information. You mentioned cutting off the plugs from the acquired coral. Are you simply gluing the cut coral to your rock from there?
Love your videos! Im not new to this hobby but there's no such thing as knowing too much lol am all ways want to know more. BTW love The music at the end, very relaxing, I find myself humming it even after the video ends lol
So, when my coral arrive, how exactly do i go about removing the coral from the frag disk? I didnt even know you had to remove them lmao, my corals are being shipped now (the tank is fully cycled and prepped) but, how do you usually cut it off? I thought the corals naturally removed themselves from it eventually?
Question, I’m rebooting an existing tank and want to keep a few soft corals but need to cycle the tank again because I’m taking out the existing sand and rock and add new. What should I do with my corals. Can I add them to the tank right away
Hi, New by here when you say full spectrum led do you mean RBG? If only doing soft corals can you use blue and white? I've seen some lights that say they have ultraviolet is that necessary? Thanks for the video great info for a beginner in research mode.
Great information to put out there new reefers should do more research before and not during and after and definitely quarantine everything you get before putting it in your display tank 👍
Hey this may be a dumb question, but at what point do you feel a tank is FULLY cycled? Like I know water should have 0 ammonia and nitrite and very little nitrate in the end, but what other things outside of that do you think I should wait on?
From what i understand, they are animals with plant cells, that grow in plant like formations. So my Query would be, if i can grow and propagate plants, do i have what ir takes to grow and cultivate corals? Or is it dissimilar?
I’ve never made a reef before. I have know idea what the acronyms used in this video mean. Also I have no idea how to place the coral on the rock. Are there videos with the very basics?
Left me wondering what you'd recommend for dipping routine, and how to make a sensible and stable QT-tank that doesn't stress the corals, without setting up a whole extra system.
Hey Travis, what are the fish that are silver with the yellow fins, they might even be a bit orange. You have I think 3 of them in the tank. Thanks.. great vids too.
Then a question arises number 5 how do i no wen it is fully cycled. Not every tank is after 6 week or even 6 monts. Number 4 testing what should i be testing for and what should the parameter's be? I have mine at 27.3 C.
random question im rather new to the marine aquarium scene ive had mine a year now and recently started adding coral but one thing ive noticed is peoples wave makers always look proper crusty and i was just curious why? also added my first two wave makers yesterday
I have a small ten gallon tank. I want to put in a zoa garden now that it is cycled. But I don’t think I have the right light. And I can’t find a good tank light for a hood. I would like to keep a hood on my tank because I have a cat and don’t want it to get into the tank an realize “fish yum”. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Got pile of live ocean rock that's going a new RS aquarium - if I wanted clean the rock that got no coral growing on it is bleach ok with water and how long to leave it bleach water + how long b4 its safe to put into new tank-Tony
My mag is always high and I do water changes faithfully everything else is great and I don’t have coral yet . Mag is like 1600 , do u know wut I can do?
So this all started with a fish. He is right. Go slow, study, and if you are lie me, it will still screw up occasionally. My last screw up was peppermint shrimp.they ate My hammerhead and trampled everything else. Btw - Acros really are hard to keep alive long term. My big enemy (at home) is green algae . With the tanks at work our tank is hair algae.
When I talk about cycling a system before adding coral its about the overall stability. I have seen several uncycled setups kill coral and thats why i said what i said. If you would like to continue this conversation feel free to contact me via email.
How do you get away with such a small amount of rock with that many fish? Always heard 1 pound per gallon. What do you use to keep nitrates in check????
@@freddiechapman7312 im done cycling and im thinking of sugar dosing since i did a 50% water change and my nitrates are still off the charts at 160+ which is horrible. Cant do alot of water changes since my family will kill me for the huge amount of water wasted lol specially since RO/DI wastes so much water aswell.

Haha I’m 6 months in and I’m already lining up to this one haha I didnt realise how expensive it would be
Win From Within you’re not okay... you will never be ok...
You forgot about loosing your job because you stole money from them to pay for the hobby
You should set a budget a head of time.

I’m finally adding Coral on December 1st!
Updates?
I was waiting for the “do you quarantine bro?” The whole time!
Great video! Keep it up

subscription to this channel payed me back today , great video travis 👍
I Just Subscribed. This video was very informative. Thank you!
Couldn’t have come at a better time. I ordered tons of corals during that reefers direct hello goodbye online sale
Some very good tips on coral care. Good job Travis..
I currently do freshwater, and have three very stable, and successful tanks. Really wanting to do a salt water, it just seems so daunting...
Like me never tell your wife how much your salt water tank cost. Just said you buy everything on goodwill, very cheap
Mane just started a tank …I hide and sneak everything I get ..tell her it was already in the tank or it grew from the rocks
Great video Travis
Great talk understanding 👏of the hobby
As a fellow veteran, thank you for your service and thank you for great content! I have a question. Should I get corals or fish first?
Fish
Fish for sure
OMG that blue fish on the bottom right went crazy at 3:44 :XD
He went sicko mode
Great video - great advice for someone considering a reef tank. Patience and research breed success..
Love your videos! Im not new to this hobby but there's no such thing as knowing too much lol am all ways want to know more. BTW love The music at the end, very relaxing, I find myself humming it even after the video ends lol
Great info. Thanks.
Travis great video as always brother
how do you keep alkalinity stable? dosing? is there anything that depletes alkalinity?
Awesome tips Travis. These are all tips that everyone should use. Great job.
Great video 👍 thanks for sharing!
Is that ok to use tap water for the coral aquarium once using dechlorinator. Also, how come the video tank appears to have no sand substrate
So, when my coral arrive, how exactly do i go about removing the coral from the frag disk? Its not nessesary. and not possible on certain corals, razor blade for softies, bonecutter for stomy corals
Question, I’m rebooting an existing tank and want to keep a few soft corals but need to cycle the tank again because I’m taking out the existing sand and rock and add new. What should I do with my corals. Can I add them to the tank right away

whats the diff between live rock and dry rocks?

What is a living rock?
Great 👍 video
Excellent
What brand of dip should I use
Left me wondering what you'd recommend for dipping routine, and how to make a sensible and stable QT-tank that doesn't stress the corals, without setting up a whole extra system.
...heading over to your playlists!
What Coral do you have thats all the way right, when facing tank? The tree looking coral?
Hey Travis, what are the fish that are silver with the yellow fins, they might even be a bit orange. You have I think 3 of them in the tank. Thanks.. great vids too.
silver mooney maybe?
?mono
I need help, my tank is setup for 3 weeks i check the water and everything looks good, if i put the coral in the tank will it die?
What’s up dude
Then a question arises number 5 how do i no wen it is fully cycled. Not every tank is after 6 week or even 6 monts. Number 4 testing what should i be testing for and what should the parameter's be? I have mine at 27.3 C.
LPS and SPS will depleted calcium, magnesium and alkalinity which in turn makes your water parameter unstable.
What does lps and sps stand for?
random question im rather new to the marine aquarium scene ive had mine a year now and recently started adding coral but one thing ive noticed is peoples wave makers always look proper crusty and i was just curious why? also added my first two wave makers yesterday
Here i am, looking at this video, after getting a little zoa that refuses to open for 2 days now.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
how did you acclimate those monos? so cool!
Unless you have a 300 gallon or bigger.. don't
The coral are beautiful, and I wish to hug them.
Got pile of live ocean rock that's going a new RS aquarium - if I wanted clean the rock that got no coral growing on it is bleach ok with water and how long to leave it bleach water + how long b4 its safe to put into new tank-Tony
You’ll never get anything alive with bleach, I don’t even have a tank, but just don’t do that.
Will the fish eat the soft coral?

My mag is always high and I do water changes faithfully everything else is great and I don’t have coral yet . Mag is like 1600 , do u know wut I can do?
your salt has high mag, switch and wait for it to drop down

there's no reason and no evidence that you need to cycle a tank for corals
Firsthand experience is the only evidence needed cheers
I'm super curious to know what ammonia burn looks like on coral
When I talk about cycling a system before adding coral its about the overall stability. I have seen several uncycled setups kill coral and thats why i said what i said. If you would like to continue this conversation feel free to contact me via email.
How do you get away with such a small amount of rock with that many fish? Always heard 1 pound per gallon. What do you use to keep nitrates in check????
over skimming and macro algae if the nitrates get to high i cut back on how much i feed and do water changes
I would like to see comments from the people who disliked this vid...i dont get it? Who doesnt like an info video???
Your Yellow Tang looks like he is being bullied and not eating enough. He has been up in that corner for several vids now.
Thats what happens when you beat up every fish in the tank and they turn on you
Yep...Tangs PIA.
How do you know your tank is cycled? Noob question I know haha
Bruce b no nitrite in the system. Test with chemical test kits or take a sample to a local fish shop.
Fish waste - Ammonia - Nitrite - Nitrate (- Nitrogen in anaerobic areas like deep sand beds) bacteria cause all these changes.
@@freddiechapman7312 im done cycling and im thinking of sugar dosing since i did a 50% water change and my nitrates are still off the charts at 160+ which is horrible. Before I watch this video you better not say water change.
Your tank has poor surface skimming.
without any suggestions to help my mans out
