Just watched your 4 part series on how to set up a salt water tank and then watched this. Your the only person I've seen that made this look easy. I was about to give up on trying to do a salt water tank before I even tried but you made this seem just as easy as a freshwater tank. I'm now going to attempt a 30 gallon saltwater tank with clown fish (if I can find the right substrate and rocks, nowhere around me can even get freshwater sand let alone live sand and rocks.) Thank you for the great videos on this topic. You have earned a subscriber.
I've been looking non stop at how-to videos for saltwater aquariums for the past 2 weeks and this was the BEST. Talks about it real quick and then shows how-to by showing step by step with a lot of useful but yet simple information. I SUBSCRIBED right away and feel more comfortable building my own saltwater aquarium. Thanks
Love that kitchen countertop. Nice home! I love your videos. I'm new to the hobby and am really learning a lot from you. Thanks! You are a good teacher.
MrScaryMan do you have Directv if so hit the menu button go to search and browse then to smart search and tipe in tanked watch two or more if you have not seen it I think you will like it.
I usually don't comment on things, but when you talked about the holding the tubing to control the water flow when cleaning substrate is something I probably wouldn't have thought of and will help me a lot! Thank you!
Man this is really helpful. Saltwater fish tanks seem to most people to be for experts only and is very complex, but really an easy tank like yours is really freshwater with an extra water parameter.
Basic saltwater aquariums like this are a great starting point for people interested in getting into saltwater! Once they get the basic elements down, they can feel more confident to upgrade to more sophisticated setups and one day-- be experts!
That was a very easy to understand, real informative video!!! I've watched so many on here that have the presenter go on about useless technical stuff that makes it feel so confusing until I watched yours. Thank you for the video!!!!
hi I am living in the state of Kerala in India I always watch ur videos regarding marine tank setup as now I do not have a petstore or aquarium nearby to give salt water fish they are asking huge money for fishes they claim it will take 60 000 rupees or 890 dollars I hope u ship to India with less cost .Loved ur channel
I really appreciate you having to explain to build a saltwater tank. This is my first time since I am doing this for Aquatic Science and wanted to try this so badly after seeing my friend making her own with her dad.
Hey Thomas, I have a new 75 gallon setup. My ammonia is only 2ppm, nitrites 0ppm. I have live rock and live sand. Should I add a capful of ammonia, or wait, or what? I really appreciate your videos!
Hey there. I noticed at 1:03 that the top of your tank looked like it had some oily type of thing on the surface of the water, I have the same thing. What is it?
Fantastic video. I think that you could do a video on a right way to treat you aquarium. I am sure that if you tell others the following that would be very helpful to people who deal with aquariums. 1. Before starting to do any kind of operations with aquariums clean your hands thoroughly with tap water any time after do your home cleaning routines. Make sure your hands are free from any kind of detergents, soaps and stuff like that before you start doing any aquarium stuff. 2. Make sure your aquarium do not placed in place where people smoke. Cigarette smoke can be very dangerous for aqua inhabitants since smoke is easily absorbed with water. Same relates to any kind of indian or chinese incense sticks and any other similar stuff, like oils etc. I personally have never thought about that but this stuff can be really detrimental, especially in places where rooms airing do not often performed. 3. Never clean front glass (or any kind of tank glass) with galss cleaners (especially spray way). That could be really devastating. Same reasons as with smoke. 4. Also I would add that if you want to have even better prepared tap water for water changes you can use separate tank, not big in size, with a filter and carbon only filter media in that and constant water movement. Air pumps are also very good option since chlorine evaporates faster with constant water movements, carbon will partly remove any other bad stuff that might be in tap water and also water will be filled with oxygen in advance. Thus tap water will be perfect for water changes. And adding conditioners will do fantastic results in the end. Sounds a little crazy but for those who really care for aquariums that advice may also be very good. I think a video may be created on that topic. That would be really interesting and very helpful for everyone who love aquariums.
SOLID tips, Iurii! Our Top 10 Aquarium DO NOTs video covers a couple of those tips, but thanks for providing more pointers for our community! It's people like you who make the hobby AWESOME! Keep on Tankin!
Great Video Series, A BIG thankyou for these videos & your time producing these, Only thing i can note is put the background on the tank before setting any equipment up ect & only other thing i would like to of had known is what is an ideal sequence of lighting - Ie how many hours approx for both the day lights & blue night lights ect & more detail to the filter media, But a very helpful & great video for beginners like myself :)
Really nice video I will definitely try to duplicate all of this as I have wanted a very easy to follow guide. Ill just be replacing freshwater (tap) with RODI but you made everything look very simple thankyou!
Start my first salt nano with evo 13.5 had fresh water discus tanks for 20 plus years and koi pond .My kids got me nano for my 25 th anniversary gonna give it go . i like your simple video easy to understand also added plus .one question after the fact would it been better to have went bigger tank lets say 20 gallon or 30 gallon for starter kids did this as a surprize so cant not at least give it a go . like i said love the video .
Tap water contains higher tds than in ro (0.00), these arm harmful to saltwater creatures, but fish only tanks not so much depending on species, clownfish being one I guess
I'm running a freshwater aquarium in a 35 gallon with a canister filter and inline uv steriliser going to my spray bar. if I wanted to have a simple fish and live rock tank with a pair of clown fish and some inverts maybe. would I just need to remove my ornaments and add live rock and salt water. would that be enough. ?
Hi. im planning on setting up a 135 litre ( 29 gallon ) saltwater aquarium, my main question is would a 25 litre ( 5 gallon ) water change weekly be sufficient to keep nice water. ? thanks
Can you explain or make a video on how to care and replace your filter? I'm not sure if there's anything I have to replace or change such as the media or the carbon.
will using measing cups that have been previously used with soap hurt? i accidently already did it, but it was rinsed before every use, and is now used solely for that, is it okay? or if it did have something bad on it is it probably already off and safe to use now?
I'm going to be starting up a new tank. It will be at least 20 gallons and I'm looking to make it a freshwater community tank. I was wondering what fish would be good options to all live harmoniously, and still provide a nice variety of fish in the tank.
Hello lovely video really got some idea how to setup an salt water aquarium Just wanted to know what subtracts to add for the external canister filtration. can we add Bio-Rio for the flirtation or just Bio-Balls and Activated Carbon is enough for the aquarium? Kindly advise how to cultivate natural beneficial bacteria in the aquarium..
Hey, I was wondering if this the appropriate amount of fish in my 55 gallon tank, I haven't gotten these fish yet. I'm thinking of getting 4 zebra danios, 2-3 mollies (maybe), 1 bushy nose Pleco, 3 kribensis cichlid, perhaps 1-2 angel fish, 5 panda Cory catfish, 7 emperor tetras. I would love suggestions, I kind of need them. lol
Honestly, it sounds like that is way too many fish for that tank. Or not even nessecarily too many fish, but way too small of a space for most of the fish in there. Angelfish species generally seem to say on all places ive looked that "angelfish species require a minimum 125 gallon space." so I dont think a 55 gallon tank would be big enough
Top Rope Wrestling and are you saying petco carry"s nature's water if you watch the tanked you know what I mean if you don't and you have Directv hit the menu button go to search& browse and type in tanked and watch a few I think you will like it and it gives you ideas for the fish and how you want it to look
im also considering that light for my 10. according to mass aquariums and aquasun, its good for softies and a few lps. but i just dont like the atinics. their a dark blue. i asked mass aquariums if he could do a video on just the lights, a reveiw, show the colors and coral growth, etc, and he said sure, about a week ago, so check his channel for when his reveiw comes out. the only other reveiw of it i saw was just like a 10 second clip that was bad quality. it looked dim in the video, but he A. had a glass hood on it which will dim it a bit, and B. the hood was dirty as fuck, which also probably dimmed it, and he doesnt answer comments, so i have no clue as to what it can really do.
I'm glad I came across this video..first timer I havent gotten any fish i want to learn more before i purchase anything so far i only got a 15g tank any suggestions?
nice video sir kindly please tell me that for your aquarium you are using tap water for making salt water or using RO water for making salt water? because people says if u have salt water tank u must have RO plant at your home? i will be thankful to you.
jhon cabrera yes, depending on your tap water quality u might be able to keep some coral, although if you are planning on keeping coral I strongly recommend rodi water
Tap water can contain heavy metals that are detrimental to corals, so reverse osmosis is recommended for a reef. However, fish-only systems can do just fine with tap water, provided you use a good water conditioner.
If you can use plain old tap water for your salt water aquarium with out getting crazy alge blooms you might as well set up fresh water aquarium it will turn out amazing and be cheaper
Hi, I want to set up a 20 gallon saltwater tank. with 2 clownfish and probably some corals in the future. and I want to know if tapwater mixed with reef salt is fine?
Hi Al , loved the video , im new to fish keeping , ive got a freshwater setup currently , really wanted to ask you where you got the finding Nemo tank background from? And do you apply on the outside. Keep up the good work
I would if i could filter it proparly. I know that there is a difference between fresh and salt water, but i have a fresh water tank for newts. Which has been running for 6 years with just a small internal filter. ( and there are people that have the same filter, but still WANT to do water changes every few weeks ) So that is why i ask, why do you NEED to do water changes in salt water tanks?
Typically, yes a circulation pump other than your filter is recommended, but how strong or how many pumps depends on your individual setup. LEDs can definitely keep corals alive, but make sure the fixture is rated for corals. Not all LEDs have enough output for coral photosynthesis.
If you plan to keep corals, to be successful you will need to do a lot of learning. Corals are beautiful. They will also make anyone wish they paid more attention in chemistry class! There are many, many more things to understand with corals than with fish. A fun and relatively thorough introduction to starting a reef tank is the BRS 52 weeks of reefing youtube series. That will introduce you to a lot of important concepts like PAR and the chemistry of coral growth. It's a good starting point to learn the vocabulary. Then you can immerse yourself in 'things i wish i knew when i started' themed threads on reefing forums. Then there's also Mr. Saltwater Tank here on youtube; and Miss saltwater tank too. She's putting out great, clear videos. I recommend 3 months research minimum. You can learn from other people's mistakes, or you can make your own!
I'm new to saltwater and i love how someone finally went step by step and demonstrated the steps to us, thank you!

finally a real how-to
Christie Gurganus Riiiiightttt... I’ve been going through so many videos couldn’t find a good one
trust me, this is bullshit
Xavier Gibes why do you say that?
That doesn’t give Xavier Gibes the reason to call it bulls**t
Thanks for the video, I'm new to the hobby but you make it very easy to understand. Keep it up!
NO, trust me this guy does not know what he's talking about
Wow, I thought that tank was empty, that water is so clear
10:48 I just noticed the background 10/10
They said keeping clownfish is easy. It was. So I bought 1 coral. Lmao I opened a can of worms now

Our pleasure! We are hear to help educate as best as we can :)
I had a bad experience using tap water even with the conditioner. Tap water has silicates that will cause diatom blooms.
Did you ever find a fix for this particular problem?
Yeah you should of used filtered or ro water
Hey Thomas, I have a new 75 gallon setup. My ammonia is only 2ppm, nitrites 0ppm. I have live rock and live sand. Should I add a capful of ammonia, or wait, or what? I really appreciate your videos!

Happy to help!
what kind of filters do you use for saltwater? Can general freshwater filters deal with salt water?
5:25 could we just use normal declore or stress coat
Really helpful, thank you!
Yep! I’m sticking to herping!
SO HELPFUL AND INFORMATIVE!!!!!!!!! 👍🏼👍🏼
After watching this,,I'm not so scare to do it,,and I will most likely buy all the stuff he recommends, cause I'm new at this...Thanks Big Al's.
Good luck-- this is a SOLID starter setup for saltwater. Try it out, get good at the basics, and you'll be ready to graduate to more complex reefing!
I love how you have decorated your aquarium! What was your criteria when selecting the corals?
pacatelas16 there are no corals in there
Sir did u just put authentic corals or a synthetic corals?
Abner Barroa synthetic
@@jordanbarreto7985 thanks sir.
This channel's the best!
No, YOU'RE the best! And thanks :)
Will a sand sifting goby keep your sand clean enough or will I still want to clean the sand as part of my maintenance? Wonderful videos btw.
What about if you use Reverse Osmosis water do you still need to use water conditioner?
Does that Sea Prime conditioner also set the PH properly?
Thanks Bid Al. I did not know do a salt water tank.
How do you do a water change if I don’t do buckets. I have a hose straight from my sink.

Living rocks or porous sea rocks and very pure RO/DI are the base of a serious aquarium for living corals
Tap water contains higher tds than in ro (0.00), these arm harmful to saltwater creatures, but fish only tanks not so much depending on species, clownfish being one I guess

Hey thomas, what corals do you think would grow under the aquasun ho 18 inch over my 10 gallon Nano reef.
im also considering that light for my 10. according to mass aquariums and aquasun, its good for softies and a few lps. but i just dont like the atinics. their a dark blue. i asked mass aquariums if he could do a video on just the lights, a reveiw, show the colors and coral growth, etc, and he said sure, about a week ago, so check his channel for when his reveiw comes out. the only other reveiw of it i saw was just like a 10 second clip that was bad quality. it looked dim in the video, but he A. had a glass hood on it which will dim it a bit, and B. the hood was dirty as fuck, which also probably dimmed it, and he doesnt answer comments, so i have no clue as to what it can really do.

Can u use the syphen pump to pump fresh saltwater back in to tank??
What are good safe plants to put in a bearded dragon terrarium
THANK YOU!
please tell me that ,for how much days once the water should be changed?
Where can I get the same decor inside
Is there any extra step if I'm using real sea water for my weekly water change?
What about a filter and lightening?
What was that test strip you were using? And where did you get it?
Amanda Willett test strips are very inaccurate, I recommend proper test kits
I'm glad I came across this video..first timer I havent gotten any fish i want to learn more before i purchase anything so far i only got a 15g tank any suggestions?
luisf2400 A pair of clownfish and a shrimp and goby pair!
nice video sir kindly please tell me that for your aquarium you are using tap water for making salt water or using RO water for making salt water? because people says if u have salt water tank u must have RO plant at your home? i will be thankful to you.
Waqas Arif if u want to keep coral I strongly recommend rodi
Is tap water with seachem prime for fish only saltwater tank safe ?
jhon cabrera yes, depending on your tap water quality u might be able to keep some coral, although if you are planning on keeping coral I strongly recommend rodi water
Hi bro this maintanence will be follow on monthly are weekly bro
I heard that tap water is not recommended for saltwater or is that for a reef tank. I read reverse osmosis water is needed. And not to use tap?
That is mainly recommended for reef tanks with corals.
Tap water can contain heavy metals that are detrimental to corals, so reverse osmosis is recommended for a reef. However, fish-only systems can do just fine with tap water, provided you use a good water conditioner.
R u that worker at pet supplies plus in Latrobe
Can you show how to setup and maintain a brackish tank?
Doesn't tap water cause major algae problem in marine tanks??
If you can use plain old tap water for your salt water aquarium with out getting crazy alge blooms you might as well set up fresh water aquarium it will turn out amazing and be cheaper
Can u put rock salt
Hi, I want to set up a 20 gallon saltwater tank. with 2 clownfish and probably some corals in the future. and I want to know if tapwater mixed with reef salt is fine?
Daymian P I'd say it's okay if you condition the tap water first
do we really need UV light? or its only for live corals?
can you make a fresh water Video
Shhhhh you'll ruin the surprise! (Yes, we will).
+Big Al's. oke im so sorry
What kind of water tester was that?
does the salt vanish in couple of weeks?
Hi Al , loved the video , im new to fish keeping , ive got a freshwater setup currently , really wanted to ask you where you got the finding
Nemo tank background from? And do you apply on the outside.
Keep up the good work
Where can I get those aquarium furniture?
Soo, why do you NEED to do waterchanges?
jelle de bruin lol same reason you don't wash in the same bath water every week.. imagine that's your bed and yaw toilet too ?
And your breathing space don't forget👉 👍
It's concentrated pollution
I would if i could filter it proparly.
I know that there is a difference between fresh and salt water, but i have a fresh water tank for newts.
Which has been running for 6 years with just a small internal filter.
( and there are people that have the same filter, but still WANT to do water changes every few weeks )
So that is why i ask, why do you NEED to do water changes in salt water tanks?
jelle de bruin you need to do water changes in EVERY aquarium...
So I need a power head for a 37 gallon salt aquarium? And can I keep corals with LEDs?
Do I need
Typically, yes a circulation pump other than your filter is recommended, but how strong or how many pumps depends on your individual setup. LEDs can definitely keep corals alive, but make sure the fixture is rated for corals. Not all LEDs have enough output for coral photosynthesis.
