Very good video. I do have a few tips to help you and others. When you remove the rubber accordion, inspect it thoroughly for cracks. Often the failure of this rubber tube will cause all sorts of issues that people overlook because the cracks are hidden in the deeper sections of the accordion section. Another tip is to save and use old soft bristle toothbrushes to aid in cleaning the throttle plate and throttle bore, brush it as if you were brushing your back teeth. It's easier than trying to use towels and your fingers. Finally, remember that it took years for your throttle plate and bore to get to this point so this cleaning should take a while, don't just spray once, scrub once and done, spend a while since it's something you hopefully won't have to do for some time to come. Stay safe.

With all this hard work put in, it would've been easier if you had removed the throttle body so you could've cleaner the other side too. The other side is normally the dirtiest. However, you need to change the gasket but they are cheap.

Depending on how dirty your Throttle Body (TB) and Mass Airflow (MAF) sensor were, it's not uncommon for engine to run little bit rough for 3 to 10 minutes after cleaning for these reasons: 1. If you sprayed too much into the TB, that throws off the air-fuel mixture 14.7 (air) to 1 (fuel) ratio until the cleaning solution burns off. 2. Most modern car's TB is electronically controlled based on input signals fed from various sensors data like MAF, Oxygen sensor, TB, etc. Therefore, the car is constantly calibrating the TB plate in terms of how much it should open. At idle, it's nearly closed and at high RPM, it's wide open. So, immediately after cleaning TB and MAF, the car is briefly confused on Air-to-fuel mixture because it was trying to use old data when TB and MAF were dirty. So it takes time for car to relearn. And usually, brief rough engine settles down within few minutes, but if the TB and MAF were very dirty, then it may take a day of normal driving for car's computer to figure out the correct TB setting. Some car's have relearn steps, but I didn't find it for Murano. And this is also same for Toyota/Lexus. They don't officially publish idle relearn steps, and therefore, the master Toyota mechanic UA-camr says, you just have to drive the car to allow idle relearn to occur.

Brother that’s an electronic throttle u cannot push it open unless ur willing to pay a lot to re program by Nissan. U should hve put car in nuetral. Nd put a stick to hold the peddle open from inside. Besides that all is good

    • @DIYLifeSkills

Hi Jay, the most Japanese car electronic TB is controlled by gear and spring. When car engine is running, the gear controls how much the TB plate to open to control the amount of air flow. When resting, the spring returns the plate back to the resting stop which is just short of maximum closure. This is why you see a slight opening of TB plate when car is turned off. The car has no idea that the TB plate was moved when it's not running, especially if you disconnect the negative terminal on battery. That said, cleaning the carbon off the plate, especially if it was very dirty and it was not able to return to the resting position completely and car had to compensate for it, then you'll likely see rough idle, until you do the relearn if the engine is so rough and not safe to drive. If it's just high idle in park, otherwise, car drives normally, then just drive around and computer will eventually compensate the plate offset you created by cleaning the carbon.

Ty brother. So I just have to drive it around some to get it bck to normal on top of the relearn procedures. Thanx a lot. I just had a one time exp wen I clean my last infinity nd I remembered that the ramp was high Afther cleaning nd wasting gas. That was why I needed the tech but u say with the Reg relearn & driving it that it will eventually return to its spot. Kool Tnx again

    • @DIYLifeSkills
      @DIYLifeSkills  2 роки тому

Just move the plate slowly up and down since there is plastic gear connected to it. The spring to return to closure is somewhat strong, so return it softly and don’t let it slam back. Be sure to clean edges and the backside of the plate as well. Also tape the sprayer nozzle so it doesn’t shoot inside the TB, in which case you’ll have to remove TB to retrieve it.

It may not be all THAT bad, but yes, I just went through this on a 2006 Nissan Murano. I DID move the butterfly open by hand while I sprayed and wiped out all the carbon. The car ran pretty good before, but after cleaning, the idle swung wildly between about 1200 and 2000 rpm! And after about 2 hours, 20 or so starts and some driving around, it was not self-correcting, even after doing the gas pedal position and idle air relearn. I had to disconnect the battery for about 1/2 hr, THEN do the idle air relearn, and it corrected the idle to a steady 550 rpm which is the correct number. But it was a pretty harrowing couple of hours where it thought I might have hosed the throttle body and would have to buy another one. It is not intuitive to realize you could screw it up by moving the butterfly.

I'm sure you know the throttle body is electronically calibrated. Did you have any issues with MIL codes on the throttle body after manually manipulating the throttle body butterfly valve to clean the back of it?

I regularly do MAF & TB in all my 4 vehicles, and never had any issues.
In 90% of the time, I don't have to do the idle relearn.
On Camry and Lexus, I captured the post-cleaning, idle situation in the videos,
but I forgot to do that for Murano, since it ran fine at the moment and since then.
But to be precise for the Murano, for about 3 seconds after the start, engine felt little bit rough,
but then it smoothed out immediately. There are idle re-learn steps for Murano if necessary.
I think the brief roughness was some of the cleaning spray was being burnt off.
Try not to get too much spray inside the flap. Spray on to the flap and surrounding only
and wipe them down. I found that clean microfiber towels are best at picking up the baked in carbon
vs. just paper towel or some old rags.

@@eltostonsito Gotta question for you. Is your dash, steering wheel, and gear shift knob all kind of peeling and cracking?
So far, I fixed everything that I know, but those things are making the car look so ugly. I'm gonna remove the steering wheel and gear shift knob, and slightly sand down the roughness and repaint or re-dye them to the similar color. I already bought the repair kit. For dash, I'm still studying how I can cover hairline cracks here and there.

    • @eltostonsito

@@DIYLifeSkills Yes the dash just started cracking last year and it surprised me. I live in Florida and I had a 50% heat reduction tint on the windshield and regularly applied protectant on the dash. The shift knob and the steering wheel are fine but it's probably because I have a steering wheel cover on it.

@@eltostonsito So I've talked to many Murano owners, and it seems those that parked cars in the garage regularly or live in generally cold climate doesn't seem to have the cracking issue. Looks like heat is what is making that vinyl coating on top to melt and crack. For Lexus RX350, they have really nice hard plastic cover that fits perfectly over the dashboard, but for Murano, I've only found ugly carpet like mat. It may take time, I'm gonna figure out a way to fix this dash.

I've been cleaning this way for over 25 years and not once had any major issues. Once in while, when I buy a used car with high miles and TB has heavy carbon build up, on some of these cases, you could see rough idle. One example is 2008 Jetta had 125K miles when I bought it, and that idled rough and threw check-engine light and I had to do relearn before I felt safe to drive. Other than that, about a dozen Toyotas, Lexus, and Nissans I've driven not had any issue. Since I started UA-cam channel little over 2 years ago, I don't have all the previous TB cleaning, but I do have similar videos on 2006 Lexus GS300 (two times), 2013 Camry SE, 2016 Corolla S, and of course this 2010 Murano.

@@jaybreezey6945 Take a look at the TB plate when engine is turned off. The plate should have returned almost to complete closure but not. There should be tiny air gap to allow some air to enter when starting the car. Also did you clean the Mass Airflow sensor? When this is dirty, air & fuel mixture ratio will be off and you’ll either get poor performance and/or gas mileage.

Some cars, like European models you can, but most Japanese cars doesn’t need to. Basically TB is already constantly being calibrated as you drive as car’s computer is constantly monitoring and adjusting the air-fuel mixture ratio. If you spray too much into the intake, then engine may briefly show rough idle and all you have to do is just drive normally and it’ll recalibrate as needed.

I’ve been cleaning this way for many years in many different cars, and not once did it give any trouble. Most of the time the car runs just fine as is, and once in a while you have to do the idle relearn to accelerate the smooth idling. Regardless, car is always learning and adjusting air/fuel mixture so minor changes and auto learned by itself.
That said disconnecting battery or better yet completely removing it to clean is better route.
