They were always in competition with the Beatles. I believe this song was Paul Mc Cartneys favorite song. He said it was the greatest song ever written.
Fun Fact: The famous French horn on this song was played by Alan Robinson, who appeared on the scores for many films, including The Sound of Music and The Ten Commandments. He got the call for the session because he could play without music written out. Brian Wilson sang him the horn line he had in mind, and Robinson played it by ear using a glissando technique suggested by Wilson.
The Beach Boys started with songs focused on surfing, drag racing, girls and basic teen drama, by the time you get to Pet Sounds, Brian Wilson was trying to create a masterpiece of production. The name reflects the idea that this album is all about creating perfection in each composition. Good Vibrations is also on the his album and is probably the pinnacle of Brian's obsession with pushing the boundaries of production. The earlier Beach Boys music is still a ton of fun and catchy as hell, but not as "mature" in theme or composition. Try Little Deuce Coupe or Fun, Fun, Fun for a taste of them at an earlier point.
BEATLES members have said that THE BEACH BOYS' songs "God Only Knows" (from the album 'Pet Sounds') and "Good Vibrations" (from the album 'Smiley Smile') are the two most beautiful works to have been composed and recorded throughout the history of pop rock. Thanks.
Brian Wilson was a musical genius. Writing, recording arranging and performing, he was among the top artists in the world. He and Paul McCartney had a sort of a friendly rivalry. Pet sounds inspired the Beatles Sgt. Pepper album. Both have so much respect for the pother's talent. Brian Wilson was just put on a "conservatorship" because of his dementia. The Beach Boys, have, and will always be America's adopted sons. They are America. God Bless Him.
So, you guys brought up the Beach Boys' drummer (Dennis Wilson) in the "Good Vibrations" video some time ago. He actually has two albums, called "Pacific Ocean Blue", released in 1977, and "Bambu", which was included in the 2008 Legacy Edition of "Pacific Ocean Blue". Give those a listen when you get the chance. Even Brian Wilson said he had no idea Dennis had such songwriting skill in him.
Papua New Guinea is in Oceania, and it's home to the most amount of languages in the world (over 800) and the language with smallest alphabet, Rotokas, has only 12 letters.
They evolved from sun'surf/cars to Pet Sounds. In 63/64 kids in midwest came to their concerts with surf boards on their cars. Oracle was the Zombies tribute to Pet Sounds. First Pet, then Love's Forever Changes and then the Zombies masterpiece. Great job boys....
That is the first time I have heard this song with earphones and it is incredible! So well-engineered. It sounds different, but still The Beach Boys. Iconic sound.
I love these two guys. Intelligent, entertaining and with a wide variety of musical genres. They can be lighthearted or deep, sometimes both at the same time.
Pet Sounds and Good Vibrations were released at a time when the music world was starting to shift. This was 1967, Summer of Love. Even the squarest of bands couldn't resist that energy for long, and this was the time when Brian Wilson began to really start getting into the weeds of wanting to create sonic masterpieces; it nearly drove him crazy, but a case can be made that he came really close a couple times.
There were the brothers Wilson & other extremely talented guys. Watch some shows about the amazing & kinda tragic story about Brian Wilson's life/career. This was after the beginning beach albums. Love this one!!!!
I had the extraordinary pleasure of hearing Brian Wilson sing this greatest of all songs live at the Hollywood Bowl backed by the LA Philharmonic. Breathtaking.
We lived in Vermont but everyone was obsessed with California - there were shows like Shimhdig -Wher the Action Is and Hulbaloo which featured bands and dancers and some were filmed in California on the beach-we also had teen magazines that showed everyone blonde and tan in California surfing- I always wanted to move to California
I’ve love The Beach Boys since they came out when I was starting elementary school. Such great vibes. Still the same today! Their shows were so much fun! ☮️❤️🎼😎
I don't know how rational or irrational it is but I've got a fear of dolls and mannequins. The Boys are my go to group for vocal harmonies but another good one that should be on your radar is Mountain Man. Check out Soft Skin, Animal Tracks and Sewee Sewee Also gotta get to Little Deuce Coupe, California Girls(and then the David Lee Roth cover) and my favorite In My Room
a fan of this band and singer Gary Brooker going back to 1972, Got to see them live twice back in the day. . when Peter Frampton was asked what his idea of a perfect song was he answered A Whiter Shade of Pale.
To this day I have had friends overseas who think that the entirety of California is one huge beach and when I tell them that I'm situated between the mountains where one can ski and the beach about 100 me the other direction it blows their mind because I think the popular conception that the west coast is all beachfront is something that was in part perpetrated by the surf movement in the 60s, and that mystique and impression carries on to some degree to this day
When my family moved to So. Cal. in the mid 60's, I was told by the kids at school that there were only two groups, surfers and greasers. Guess who the surfers loved?
The Beach Boys made California famous in the 60’s. I lived there but there was a big influx of people moving there in the 70’s from other states, including maybe South Dakota. 😊
This is Paul McCartney's favorite Beach Boys song. The Beach Boys and Beatles were friendly rivals during 1966-`967. The Beatles released Rubber Soul, and then Revolver, so Brian Wilson wrote this album and got "The Wrecking Crew" to play the music (LA studio band did songs for movies and the Monkees) and then the Beatles wrote Sgt. Peppers.
The Beach Boys are from Hawthorn California....part of the greater metro area of LA, and started as the three Wilson brothers, Brian, Carl and Dennis, plus their cousin Mike Love and good friend Al Jardine, when they were teenagers. Surfing had become huge in the late fifties and early sixties in California, but Dennis Wilson was the only one who surfed......he came home from a session one day and suggested to his brother Brian that he write a song about the popular sport and life style. They are considered to be responsible for popularizing "surf music" and creating "The California Sound".
Punk & Bleach goes back to the punk rock group The Dead Milkmen & their song "Bleach Boys"..Their biggest hit being "Punk Rock Girl" (Official Music Video A MUST!!).🔥
The Bleach Boys is actually a very clever name for a Nirvana cover band. Their first album was called “Bleach”…and, of course, Kurt had that bleach blonde hair!
The name Pet Sounds? I don't know if it is true. I heard it came from something Mike Love said of Brian Wilson. He complained that we are making music only dogs can hear. Or something to that effect. I am sure some of those high notes were tough on his voice.
The Beach Boys were originally comprised of 3 brothers (Brian, Carl and Dennis Wilson) their cousin Mike Love and childhood friend Al Jardine. Denny was the only surfer in the group but he was the one who suggested they write about the beach
In the 50's and 60's in California surfing was like the most badass shit you could do - Like taking Karate lessons in the 80's. It was a huge part of Californian culture. And the Beach Boys absolutely took the reins of California beach/summer fun vibe music. All their songs are about surfing, cruising, looking for girls, maybe finding love on the best day EVER!
The funny thing is they weren’t surfers at all. I believe only 1 of them surfed (Dennis I think). It was just a vibe and persona they created. Also on this album the instrumentals were done by the wrecking crew. The Beach Boys played nearly zero instruments on the album, but all basically written by Brian Wilson.
Interesting comparison with A Rose For Emily, yes, there's a phrase at the start of the verses, like "the flowers are fading now," which does evoke the tune of "god only knows," and there's those counterpoint voices too. I think the other parent of Emily would be the Beatles' For No One, from 1966's Revolver - the piano arrangement is very similar. (BTW, Paul McCartney called God Only Knows "the perfect pop record")
For a few years the beach boys and the beatles would battle each other trying to up the others new release. It was a friendly competition between the 2 bands and just pure awesomeness for us the listeners
Whilst teenagers in South Dakota may not have been to an ocean beach, they very likely had (or wanted) a car. Beach Boys songs like "Little Deuce Coup", "409", "Cherry, Cherry Coup", "Little GTO" and "I Get Around" were popular throughout the American Midwest and helped establish them as artists.
The Beach Boys were comprised of brothers Brian (bass, vocals), Carl (lead gtr, vocals), and Dennis Wilson (drums), cousin Mike Love (vocals) and friend Al Jardine (rythm gtr, vocals) and were from Hawthorne, California. Dennis was the only surfer in the band, and he asked Brian to write a song about it, so Brian wrote Surfin', which became their first single. They were originally called the Pendletones, but the producer changed the name on the single to the Beach Boys, to tie in with the song title. Another fun fact: God Only Knows was the first rock/pop song to have God in the title, and that caused a bit oif a stir when it came out, particularly in the American South.
Pet Sounds was the Beach Boys showing the music industry that they can play songs with more depth. Their early music was simplistic and not taken too seriously. Teens and young adults loved it but it was seen to be amateurish in composition. Once the Beach Boys got a bit older their music started to mature along with them.
The Beach boys are known as Americas band. Check out The beach boys a celebration concert. 1980 washington 4th of july in front of 400000. Dennis wilson on drums will wake you up like never before. thank you guys. much love from scotland.
Wow y’all are doin The Beach Boys??! That’s awesome!! They got some serious classics. Checkout Surfs Up , Til I die and Caroline among others CLASSIC BAND
The Beach Boys were originally called the Pendletones, but got their current name from Era Records promoter Russ Regan when Candix Records wanted to name them the Surfers. Regan noticed that another group already had the name Surfers, and suggested "Beach Boys" instead. The band didn't find out about the name change until they saw their first records pressed.
I've recommended this before but the guys should react to "Song to the siren" by This Mortal Coil. It's a beautifully delicate song with with absolutely outstanding and unusual female vocals.
The Beach Boys were brothers Brian Wilson, Dennis Wilson, Carl Wilson, Mike Love (the Wilson's first cousin), and Al Jardine. Kevin Love, the NBA player, is Mike Love's nephew, making him first cousins once removed from the Wilsons. Kevin Love's father (Stan) also played in the NBA, and upon leaving the NBA, he became bodyguard, trainer, and caretaker to Brian Wilson.
You should react to the documentary "The Wrecking Crew" it's about studio musicians from the 50's and 60's, and the artists they worked with, and The Beach Boys were one of the groups
