Sometimes my impression of a car gets ruined when Matt says it has below average boot space. Then I have to remind myself that I only use the boot of my car once every Ice age.
Ha, yes I'm like that with bottle holders in the doors. 'Damn it, I can't jam a 2 litre bottle of water in my passenger side door. What the hell? Oh wait, I don't ever need to do that.'
One thing we didn't mention. Using the OnStar remote alarm trigger app on your phone is an absolutely brilliant way to troll colleagues who have taken the car on a camping trip for the weekend. At 2am. How to not make friends.
I’ve just test driven the 2016 1.4 turbo elite today and it’s the best car I’ve looked at. So much bang for your buck! Heated seats front and back, heated steering wheel. Full leather. Sat nav. Relatively quick with good mpg… the list goes on. I was so impressed that I’ve put a deposit on it and pick it up next week!
The interior is just the best in its class, clean yet good looking and easy to use. Also the touchscreen isn’t stuck on the dashboard but it’s nicely integrated into the centre console.

I really like astras i have a 04 one and I think its brilliant. They are just so well built and good to drive. Ill definitely buy another astra after this one.
Just love CarWow reviews. And for years I've wondered why Opel always end their car names with the letter A. AstrA, CorsA, MokkA, VectrA, InsigniA, ZafirA... what, did AdamA not work for themA? :-)
Armrest in the rear are available as Optional and the backrest is divided in three parts and folds electromagnetically with a button in the luggage, it is the only 5-d in this class with this equipment. Double floor with flat load floor is available as optional with spare tire.
I rented opel astra for a business trip. First impression was that it felt a little cheap. But after 1 day i dell in love with it. Nippy engine, comfortable, low consumption. Awesome car.
@@taylorthrall7321 bought 2017, 38k miles, done 6k miles and within a year compression issue needing new engine , found out it was known issue and vauxhall just keeps scamming people rather than calling back their vehicles
For about £90 you can get a second boot floor for you’re Astra from Vauxhall, adds storage boxes to the bottom of the boot and creates a second floor removing the lip but leaving a generous amount of space for shopping and luggage etc. Takes literally 5 minutes to fit it.
I've seen astra at local dealer, and it looks a bit expansive even in middle trims. You can have full led lights etc. but there isn't light in front glowebox and no air vents for rear passangers, this is step backward to previous model which had those features, so for me it was like they made a new car as cheap as possible and just added lots of new toys but forget about basic ones.
Astra K is an excellent value for money. The 1.0. turbo engine is plenty fast for the average person. Also, the LED Matrix headlights are great during dark winter months! Looks great too.
Sheila’s Beauty/ Hair/ Nails/ Fashion I used to but my friend has one that's 2 years old and its very well looked after and there is an UNBELIEVABLE amount of creaks and clunk's is shocking its only 2 years old

Very well done on the videos Mat, really liking them! Just wondering but could you do a review of the Land Rover Discovery 4 and (or) the Range Rover Sport?
I had a 2018 astra 1.6 turbo petrol with 197 bhp, Only had it 5 months wasn’t great on fuel especially if you have a heavy right foot like me. 🤣 Great car to drive though.
“There’s no false floor” you can order one for about £100 from Vauxhall either with the spare wheel or on its own with handy storage compartments. There is a rear arm rest on elite Nav models. Also on Elite Navs both the front and rear seats are heated and there’s USB charging ports in the rear as well as the front.
Wow Car prices are exploding, Mat says base Astra was £15k, and don't forget he also says that on Av CW can get you £2.5 k off that. This was produced 2016, base Astra (ICE not electric, so comparable) is now £23.8, Now working on £15.5 thats a 54% increase in 6 years, soon cars will be out of the price range of people with normal jobs.
I have driven 1.4 Astra Turbo Petrol for over 10,000 miles and it is fun to drive especially in London. Even BMW and Landrover drivers think twice before trying to out run you at the traffic lights. More legroom than the golf.
To be fair, the rear arm rest and false floor are still available as relatively inexpensive options, and the false floor comes as standard on the estate, which's boot space rivals the Skoda Octavia.
I loveee opel cars, the driving experience is so good. I’ve owned a 2015 Corsa 1.0T 5dr 85kW, was the heaviest in its class but was very energetic to carry its own weight and 5 people and the boot full going over inclines smoothly, I wish I could say the same about the lazy Kia Rio and i20. Also was smooth and quiet with loads of features. I loaded all optional extras such as blind spot monitor imagine that in thin segment and in 2015 and auto parking assist, reverse and parallel parking I loved it and called it “my attention seeker🤪” and many other features such as auto stop start, hill start assist which were I think were std features. Big value
It gets worse over time, My car has only done 14,000 miles, When i start my car people turn and look. Asked the dealer to guarantee my timming chain against failure for 100,000 miles.. he can't....50,000 miles ... he can't, He only tried to sell me a warranty as my 3 years warranty is due to expire.
@@kaankkaraman Mine does the same, thing. Dealer keeps saying its characteristic. and like Hamish said, it gets worse. Mine started doing the sound while moving after 2 years. they keep saying it's normal.
Had a 2014 diesel, loved it, just wasn't good anymore for me when I stopped travelling large distances, DPF clogged all the time. Now have a Corsa, it's 'OK', just not as comfortable and quick as the Astra was, but a petrol, something I now need.
Mat the only thing that I would add is that at night the slanted rear window reflects alot of the light at night so it can make it difficult to see from the back
Only way to solve the boot space problem is to buy the Estate or station wagon (Oarstralia) which solves the problem of having to buy a medium sized car.
been driving Vauxhall/Opel in my family since 1994 vectras and astras can't fault these motors. my brother had 1996 vectra from new which done over 200k miles with no mechanical problems at all(replaced all stuff according to service intervalintervals). my mum is driving astras since 2005 with same result.
Good review mate! I bought mid year 2018 release of this car recently. It’s s real beauty to drive and own - Agree and recommend buying one higher spec version than base which comes with AEB, lane assist, etc. 10/10 this car. Opel have taken things up a few notch with this! Impressed!
so sorry for bothering guys, i just have a quick question what is that black thingy behind the gear lever ? at 2:58 , right under the climate change controls ? i've been in an astra and that was a little empty space, i hope someone will see this and will be able to give me an answer. Great review as always Matt, you are the car channel i watch the most when it comes down to reviews, cause i know that i get all the information i need in them! So keep up the great work!!

The best Astra ever, but I cannot say the same about their warranty. I bought the intelligent lights, which are great when they work, and that's part of the problem I've been going through for some six months now! The lights will start and stop working whenever they "want". Next time I buy a car, I don't think it'll be a european one.
Wow, Carwow picking up the pace here, only a couple of hours rather than the best part of a year behind Carbuyer's Astra review. Quite similar videos, they even bought the presenter from them. Business legends.
I am a dog owner and am looking for a medium size car suitable for daily city driving, room for 4 and a large dog. When you do the boot reviews can you stick a big dog in? This would really help with my next purchase. Thanks.
Nice car but I have the feeling that they did use the blueprint of a golf 6 to create the front and interior of the car. Great review btw, as always very pleasant to watch :D
Noticed mention of that being 160hp, and goes well, surprised it's not the 1.6 turbo rsv (holden) we got here in new zealand, with 147 kw (197hp). Bought my last of the holden run out /sell off cars new in 2020(red one), at approx 33% off original price, love its grin factor when booted hard. Averages around 7lts/100kms for most of my driving (40 mpg), and only rarely gets down to claimed 6.3/100 (44mpg).
Some of these tests like boot space and head room and knee room and all that stuff dont matter to most people. People who want that could just buy a bigger, fancier car, stop judging small cars by Land Rover standards.
Talk about small rear windows what ever happened to the requirement of being able to escape easily in the event of a door failure after an accident, flip or submergence ?
In Belgium it's possible to get it with an adjustable load floor in the boot. In essence I think they just wanted to make it as big/deep as possible while the high load lip in all newer models is due to compatibility engineering. They want to make the bumper cross members higher so it wouldn't go under an SUV in case of a crash. Also, the big bumpers are made of plastic which is cheaper to produce and Insurance companies like it better because they get less parking dents repair bills. That's another reason why newer models seem to have high loading sills at the boot. Finally, while development used to be focused on the hatchback or standard model, nowadays some manufacturers want to sell more estate cars which drives them to invest more in the estate version, especially on practicality innovations.
Central LCD screen should be adjustable, so you could turn it towards you when you drive. Side windows are strangely small, not making a good impression, it's a bit claustrophobic inside. From the outside car looks really nice, event from the front.
I wonder when the new Astra will be launched. Also, OnStar is no-longer available on new cars due to the fact that General Motors no longer owns Vauxhall/Opel.
I’m thinking about buying an Astra J with automatic transmission. What are your experiences with the gearbox and the car? Would you recommend it? The one I would buy is 1362cm3 140HP petrol engine.
The front looks hideous buddy. Fingers crossed they sack it off which I'm pretty sure they will after so much negative feedback. I hope your misses is much more attractive LOL
I hope your kidding. The Astra design won several awards and it introduced the new design language for all other cars. The new Corsa will look exactly like this.
Hey Mat, are these all the compacts you were going to test? Or are you going to test more than 3 cars from segment this time? I am really interested what you think about Mazda 3.
Mat's reaction to eating that wasn't faked. We didn't check before we shot it and it turned out the Mars bars were out of date... and had sort of gone white. Yum.
+carwow Matt, please make the laying down in the rear with the rear seats folded down test. I use to sleep in my car when I'm tired on the road. It would be pretty interesting to know if you can lay there for an hour or so before continuing the journey. Thank you
I still feel that the previous Astra was better looking on the outside... Having said that I'm warming to this and having been in a few, they're mighty impressive and leaps and bounds better than the last one!
Seeing all this bollocks about what the better car is between a Golf, Focus and an Astra... Realistically, it's all personal opinion.... If you're that bothered about what the better car is, go out and test drive one and make your own mind up. I like watching car reviews, because I love to read the comments and see what shite people post.

Hello Mat, you never mention anything about opels automatic transmision. Should I go for the automatic model or manul in opels cars?
Please clean the camera lens for those tracking/drive-by shots.
Can you please post new Zafira review please? Thank you !
Central LCD screen should be adjustable, so you could turn it towards you when you drive. Side windows are strangely small, not making a good impression, it's a bit claustrophobic inside. From the outside car looks really nice, event from the front.
How long till top gear come calling?
125ps would be ok but you never mentioned the 200ps petrol - that's what I'm talking about!
it's an astra... calm down
I wonder when the new Astra will be launched. Also, OnStar is no-longer available on new cars due to the fact that General Motors no longer owns Vauxhall/Opel.
They will be replacing it with some Peugeot variant, that is no good for you, as it will only speak french :)
Mat - Could you review the current VW Golf SE Diesel? I know you have done an 'R' review, would be great to see your opinions on the standard model!
Astra is greek for starS (plural). Star in latin is stella.
That explains the stars, nice thanks
I want you to do a review of the face lifted golf as soon as you can. I have a current mk 7 and im wanting the facelifted gtd next.
Perhaps covering more of the range would be a good idea? 1.4 Turbo...or buy the VXR and screw the consumption?
I’m thinking about buying an Astra J with automatic transmission. What are your experiences with the gearbox and the car? Would you recommend it? The one I would buy is 1362cm3 140HP petrol engine.
I think the back looks pretty ugly, whereas the front looks good. Either way though, that interior is amazing for the price of the car!
TrafficScience if no one liked the looks. Then why is the Astra one of the best selling cars in Europe?
@@dystinct1777 Astra is fantastic looking
your not fucking it idiot.
the green t-shirt at the closing part looks nice on you buddy !
Hey Mat, are these all the compacts you were going to test? Or are you going to test more than 3 cars from segment this time? I am really interested what you think about Mazda 3.
funny,i was watching this video while having my mars filled loaf bread...
Mat's reaction to eating that wasn't faked. We didn't check before we shot it and it turned out the Mars bars were out of date... and had sort of gone white. Yum.
+carwow this is the real Easter egg lol
+carwow Such an honest review. 😂😂
👍
Rly
+carwow Matt, please make the laying down in the rear with the rear seats folded down test. I use to sleep in my car when I'm tired on the road. It would be pretty interesting to know if you can lay there for an hour or so before continuing the journey. Thank you
What spec is the car in question ..... Does leather come as standard ? ...... Thank you
Great review but having driven the petrol Astra's. I'd recommend the 1.0 litre over any of the others. Really smooth and fast enough.
I wouldn’t bother buying an Astra diesel as Vauxhall has a recall issue on them, which they are trying to get out of. I hope PSA sorts this
Yooka: Watching this before the Yooka Laylee Rap turns 4 years old this Thursday... Update: It’s now 4 years old!
