So that a “yes” for diet soda on a keto diet... from a keto-centric perspective, right? But a “no” from a potential health-centric perspective, correct?
Correct. It won't kick you out of keto, but there are some people who claim that merely the sweet taste can raise insulin levels, but if that's true you can't have stevia either. In the low amounts present the aspartame and caramel color don't really do that much. Of course if you drink 2 liters a day, it might add up.
@@williwonti exactly. Some people would take that to mean drink as much as you want, imo anymore than 3 cans and you're pushing it. I usually only drink one with lunch

I was addicted to Diet Coke. When I recognized my addiction I decided to quit “cold turkey”. My head hurt so bad during my withdrawal period that I would float in a pool of water because a pillow made the pain worse. I use to drink it because I loved the taste and I drank a lot 6-8 cans a day but if I drink it now it tastes horrible. Quitting DC was one of the best, and hardest, health decisions I. Have ever made.
I was the same . I would have ! 1.5l diet coke , a 1.5l pepsi max , 2 diet energy drinks a day and a 1.5l krks sugarfree lemonade . Idk how the heck I did that lol. But the withdrawal was so bad I had to continue. Now I hardly ever have it
Too much fresh air in paradise is always good. Having a bottomless bank account is always good. Two things I'll never have. That's bad. It's also sad. I'm leaving now.
I just had an interesting and fairly painful experience with diet soda. Generally I don't like the flavor of diet soda but I went into a store one day and I was Jonsing for something sugary but as part of my own "Put an end to my TII diabetes" program I decided to get a diet soda rather than go around the corner and get some ice cream which is what I really wanted. The next day I did the same and all of a sudden I had a one, two or three a day diet soda thing going on. I craved them the way I craved sugar. Then I started to develop joint pain in my knees and elbows. I did not associate the joint pain with the sodas but it had come out of nowhere. No injuries or illness. Then, one day, I had to stop at a hardware store to pick up some stuff for a job. They had a soda machine and along with the hardware I needed I also got a large diet pepsi. I had been feeling a little creeky but nothing I hadn't gotten used to. I went to work and about an hour and a half after drinking the diet soda the pain in my knees was so bad I could hardly finish the job I was on. The only thing different in my day was that diet Pepsi. So I quit. No more diet drinks. The elbow pain went away first. Then the pain in the right knee and then, after several weeks of really intense knee issues in my left knee it finally went back to functioning like normal. Again-the only difference in my diet was eliminating the diet soda. The left knee got so bad that I was taking Ibuprophin just so I could sleep at night. Then the leg cramps started along with random spasms. So I added several doses of Turmeric, potassium and magnesium and that seemed to help. The last week or so I have not had any of the supplements and all of the leg issues are gone. Was it the diet soda? I think so, but I am not going to test it out by drinking the stuff again. It's bad stuff to begin with, I don't need it in my otherwise healthy diet. One last note-my HbA1c is now down around 4.6----down from 6 last September and down from over 8 three years ago.
I never liked diet soda than I joined weight watchers years ago, regular soda wasn’t allowed so I started drinking diet Pepsi. And now I can’t imagine a day without my Diet Pepsi.
One 12 oz can of Club soda or any flavored version you like that has no added sugar of course add a few drops of pure vanilla for flavor and 8-10 drops of monkfruit liquid and you have a nice clean carbonated treat with no chemicals.

I lost 80 pounds drinking (4) diet cokes a day and one Powerade Zero per day on Keto. Don't deprive yourself, that's the best way to relapse on your goals~
I agree but what I've also found that there are so many healthy alternatives so I don't feel like I'm depriving myself when doing that. You can substitute for the healthy stuff if you can not eliminate it right away.
@@HaleBopp Once I reached my 100-pound weight loss, I had incorporated some healthy carbs into my diet like wheat bread and several types of beans. @@Jessica_PMHNP I never found a healthier alternative that ever worked for me. I do at times drink a Gatorade Zero instead of the diet coke but I still prefer the diet cokes. However, I do not drink coffee at all, I've had two cups in my life. I do not drink alcohol either, I gave that up eight years ago. So, many would agree that drinking no coffee and no alcohol but having a few Diet Cokes would be a much healthier alternative than those that drink coffee all day long then go home to chase it down with either their glasses of wine or their spirits on the rocks.

I drank all the diet soda I wanted on Keto. Didn't affect mine at all. Bodybuilders have been doing Ketosis diets pre-contest since before Arnold competed. I know plenty that drink Coke Zero, Diet Dr. Pepper, etc... They do just fine.
When I did keto years ago, I literally ate as much as I wanted, and I drank as many diet cokes as I wanted, and after 3 months I was shredded. Abs sticking out. People thought I had cancer I was so skinny. And then I went back to carbs and I kept losing weight. My metabolism reset and sped up. It took me like 6 years to gain all the weight back (where I’m at today). I’m debating doing the keto diet again but now that I don’t live at my moms house I have to cook and I get grossed out cooking raw foods it’s like a phobia of mine so I’m struggling but would love to go back to the keto for three months to reset myself. I never fasted like he suggests I had my 2-3 meals a day at least and snacks and lots of peanut butter believe it or not. The calories were def high but I shredded and again I smashed diet cokes like they were going out of style. I don’t think you can just have a blanket statement with diets. Everyone’s body responds difffernrly . You can also get shredded eating only carbs. Bodybuilders do it they stay lean and eat carbs you need carbs to grow. You have to find a diet that’s a lifestyle and not something that’s temporary otherwise you’ll always get back to your original fat self
I saw a guy on UA-cam that claimed that you could drink zero carb sodas, so I thought I would give it a try. I haven't been in keto for over a year but wanted to get back in, so I started strict keto and intermittent fasting one week ago but included 2 sprite zero sugar pee day, and 4 days after, I was in high ketosis, so by that I can clearly debunk the myth about not being able to drink zero sugar sodas on keto.
May I suggest as an alternative to canned sodas, mix lemon juice, ACV, a touch of vanilla and about a half teaspoon of baking soda. This produces a reaction that releases CO2 so your cup might overflow. Yes, the ph changes from 4.5 to maybe 5.5 after the baking soda so you do lose some acidity of pure ACV in water but this is easy to make and satisfies that craving for a soft drink. Thanks to Dr. Berg for all his sharing.
Were already tired of the grueling work outs and time we take to prepare our healthy meals at home after work etc nobody is trying to do all that im drinking 8 oz of diet soda and calling it a night 😂😂

I like a good quality espresso from my espresso machine and I grind the beans for it too. It's meditative! But that's just once a day in the morning as a matter of routine. Having more throughout the day would just ruin it. Sometimes an energy drink just hits the spot right. There's a brand I get off amazon that has these ingredients Water, Natural Flavourings, Carbon Dioxide, Acidity Regulators (Malic Acid, Citric Acid), L-Arginine (0.21%), Taurine (0.21%), Betaine (0.05%), Sweeteners (Sucralose, Steviol Glycosides from Stevia), Caffeine Anhydrous, Nicotinamide, Cyanocobalamin. It seems relatively benign. I always avoid stuff with benzoates etc. I wasn't really enlightened about AGE's and caramel colouring until this video, praise you Dr. Berg
If you are eating for health it seems that it’s smarter to drink only healthy drinks. Use naturally carbonated water and add lemon and monk fruit. It’s more refreshing, satisfies the craving for bubbly drinks, has vitamins, balances PH, reduces kidney stones, and hydrates your body. There are lots of ways to naturally flavor water or bubbly mineral water for less money, without preservatives, and without side effects. I know it’s hard to end the soda craving, but anything that is that addictive has to be problematic.

Very simple diet soda recipie: Take xylitol or erythitol and put into a small squeeze squirting bottle (like a mustard squeeze bottle) and mix with some water to make a diet simple syrup. Then take a can of your favorite flavor LaCroix or Bubbly, etc. and squirt in a shot of the syrup you made. You can also put it in lemon water as a diet lemonade.
From my research I'd stay away from citric acid as well. It's not lemon juice, far from it. It's much closer to black mold. Basically everything in these sodas except the caffeine are harmful. So trading one harmful chemical for another. HFCS for aspartame? Its probably just as bad but in a different way. Best thing to do is make your own soda if you're really into it. And use lemon juice.
I'm been overweight for most of my life and up until April 2022, my biggest weakness was the diet sodas. I started intermittent fasting and now I'm 18st 1lb. I've never managed to go full keto , however my carb intake has definitely dropped a lot. I still have chocolate though as I'm a chocoholic. 😋

I had a heart attack in February 2015 and survived, and I always knew it was the Coke Zero that was one of the major reasons I did, because for about 5 years prior to my heart attack, I was consuming each and every day, 2 to 3 liters of Coke Zero. I was drinking very little watch but sure slugging back the Coke Zero. I never consumed Coke Zero since my heart attack. I did consume Coca Cola but have since quit anything sugar including artificial sweeteners for about a half a year. Excellent video. 10/10+++++

We know it's bad for us. Though we must pick our battles... I wouldn't recommend having these all the time by any means, though being out with friends & family, having a diet soda with dinner isn't going to be an issue... Staying on track is key and sometimes items like diet coke/coke zero (mainstream diet sodas in general) help some of us stay on track! It is nice to know the mechanisms behind why they are thought to be bad for us. It helps us make our choices now wisely! Thank you Dr. Berg.

Ketoacidosis is the short form for Diabetic Ketoacidosis. It affects those who are type I diabetics. In healthy people, insulin helps regulate the production of ketones. If your ketone levels rise too high, insulin is produced to slow the break-down of fat (into fatty acids), inhibits the liver from turning fatty acids into ketone bodies and helps to make ketone use more efficient in the body. For type I diabetics they have to be concerned about Diabetic Ketoacidosis because they are unable to produce insulin which regulates ketone bodies in the blood. The only good test is a blood test. Breath and urine are extremely unreliable. 0.5 - 1.5 mM(millimolar) - Low to Moderate Nutritional Ketosis 1.5 - 3.0 mM(millimolar) - Optimal Ketone Zone (feel good for most zone) 3.0 - 5.0 mM(millimolar) - Most graphs call this "Starvation" > 10.0 mM(millimolar) - Ketoacidosis

Great job!
I'm having this symptoms ache in leggs an knee, spasm..👀 i drink it everyday... Omg i will stop from today ...
One 12 oz can of Club soda or any flavored version you like that has no added sugar of course add a few drops of pure vanilla for flavor and 8-10 drops of monkfruit liquid and you have a nice clean carbonated treat with no chemicals.

My personal experience is that it doesn't kick you out of ketosis, but I'm sure it's playing with fire.
Yesss just don’t drink it everyday
I drink it and it's fine for me I'm on low carb now tho.

Can you mix cctttl with the ACV? If not what about kkb?
Were already tired of the grueling work outs and time we take to prepare our healthy meals at home after work etc nobody is trying to do all that im drinking 8 oz of diet soda and calling it a night 😂😂

I never did like soda much. But what I do love is Dr Bergs electrolyte drink mix. After that, it’s lemon juice and organic stevia.
The best is to NOT consume all those fizzy drinks at all.
Why?
Everything we eat and drink seems to have some bad effect. Stopping eating and drinking is in itself beneficial for obesity.
Berg
Since we started drinking that , keto stopped working and cravings keep crawling back - thanks for the explanation Dr.
I drank both all through my Keto diet and I lost 109lbs no problems.

Dr. Berg can you do a video on accumulating ketones in the blood and what really is ketoaciddocids. Thank you 😊
Yeah, my cousin is married to a nutritionist and he somehow thinks being on a keto diet will give you ketoacidosis
0.5 - 1.5 mM(millimolar) - Low to Moderate Nutritional Ketosis
1.5 - 3.0 mM(millimolar) - Optimal Ketone Zone (feel good for most zone)

Oh just one won't hurt, no this is your brain addicted. Cut it out altogether.
@@cdagger2862 - While you are entitled to your opinion and I agree. I don't need you to police my dietary habits. MYOB.
Zevia. 8+ years. If it's not available, I'll simply opt for water or unsweet tea. No compromise. I *love* a Mexican Coke- but the sugar...
Water best way to go little lemon all I do all day.
I gave all soda up years ago and never looked back .
I drink diet ginger ale by Canada Dry. Still makes me drop weight on keto.🤷🏻♂️
Is it nice?
I love it too
@Rylie J yes it does....I just looked it up. It also made will aspartame
Diet Pepsi makes me drop too.
I drink Zevia sodas. And Diet A&W with heavy cream when I need something sweet.
What about green cola - "Carbonated Water, Colour (Caramel E150d), Acids (Tartaric Acid and Malic Acid), Sweeteners (Steviol Glycosides, Sucralose), Natural Flavouring, Natural Caffeine". I'm in ketosis and two cans/day didn't have an effect on it.
Best video ever, I had no idea I am poisoning myself. Thought I was doing the right thing for some variety by drinking a no cal diet soda. You just rocked me out of my chair.
Thanks DR. Berg.
Like so many videos he tells us what not to drink but I was waiting for him to make reference to at least one that I could drink. I have been drinking Diet Coke for years.
This is very timely I was thinking about this, as if you are a mind reader ... thank you Dr. Berg!!! 😇
fantastic short clip, thanks! 😎👍
Wow, you just made me stop drinking coke
mdclear Wow! so before you didn’t know coke is bad for you!
ZEVIA is an amazing alternative. They make good natural soda. Just get it when it goes on sale because it's a bit expensive haha
Ben Sasi most ppl know it’s bad regular and diet but some ppl need the reasons why it’s bad explained so it clicks.
Please say no. I hate soda with sugar removed. I know its bad for me, but its a treat.
I really enjoy the Zevia brand of carbonated drinks!
Rylie J my husband doesn’t care for them either. So weird to me. Unfortunately he opts for Coke Zero.
My question is why do the 'zero sugar sodas' cause my blood sugar to go up?
