He hasn't gotten canceled cause his fans know his comedy is satire and at the end of a day it's a joke and most his fans know that. That's the reason why I love him and his community of fans so much. 🥰
I have absolutely seen people try. Recently some like 9 yr olds are getting mad over his joke in MH about the chips and vin........yeah. Clearly isn’t cancelled tho.
The rule for when you see the "real Bo" is on the mantra he had on What: Art is a lie, _NOTHING_ is real. My rule of thumb for all artists is that, outside of them literally saying "I will be real and not have any act for a while now" nothing you ever see is entirely honest. Like, the end of Can't Handle This, you watch it without knowing, he looks like he is a very good artist going with the beat; you hear him talk honestly about it, dude was literally having a meltdown during that. I think it's best to focus on the message the artist put out than on whether that was something they planned ahead or something that just happened.
Might argue that when they attack a heckler it is real. If you watch the montage of Bo's you can almost see him snap out of charachter and start yelling at the person.
Most of your comment is right, but let's not forget that a lot of "Can't Handle This" is edited and filmed with pick ups. Especially for the close up shots. The song is about his meltdowns, yes. But the point Bo makes several times is that if you don't focus on it, he's not gonna make it obvious that he's having a panic attack. He'll just be out of breath while performing mostly by memory. Since the whole show is written and rehearsed down to the hand movements and head nods.
Do the "country song" next. He literally explains and tells the problems with the modern Country music like you were saying 6:20. Almost forgot Please Do the RANT first anyways.......
OMG please listen to Country Song next! Only because you mentioned the exact thing that song is about and I promise you will love it and also be like WTF, this is legit.
Ever since I have heard this song, I keep noticing the things he talked about in every love song i listen to and it's been driving me crazy for years. Somebody probably already wrote this, but there's a funny story connected to this song: once, Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez went to one of his performances of "What." where this song was performed. There's a clip on youtube where Bo tells this story The (not) master list of tracks: - "Sad" - "The country song" - "Kill Yourself" - "Ironic" - "Eff" Fun songs/wordplay songs: - "#deep" - "Oh Bo" - "What's funny" - "Words words words"
With Bo, nearly everything in his shows is deliberate. His shows are more like a curated performance than an interactive comedy act. Like he said in one of his jokes, "Art is a lie. nothing is real." That being said, is is also genuine in that everything he puts in his shows he means completely. Obviously not the literally, much of it is satire, but the messaging.
Repeat Stuff is one of my top favorite Bo songs from when he was way younger! So glad you reacted to it! Definitely react to his country song-parody "Pandering"! You'd actually really like it and appreciate it. It's the same idea as Repeat Stuff, but with country music.
@@suffireax He went anonymously, and IIRC Bo didn't know he was there until after the show. He was supposedly going there on a date as well I think? So that was probably a bit awkward.
I really want your reaction for Pandering now. Every other reaction I've seen only ever finds it funny and no one talks about the germs, so thanks for acknowledging it
& this is exactly the reason I love TØP so much. Songs without intelligence make my head ache. I taught my kids to actually listen to lyrics of songs and what is actually being said - best thing I’ve ever done for them.
Listen to him on podcasts/interviews. His friendship with Pete Holmes is fantastic cuz the age gap is about a decade but Bo appears to be the elder of the 2. The themes of his act are absolutely his essence, including when he breaks the 4th wall to troll himself and his own craft. Bo has opinions and he doesn't make you suffer through them, he makes you want to hear them. Love it, we need more of it.
Thanks Suffi Reax for the like! If you want some insight into Bo Burnham, look up The Green Room on UA-cam. It's a Showtime show from a few years back, it's just comics talking comedy. Paul Provenza hosts, Bo is on the episode with Judd Apatow, Gary Shandling (RIP), Marc Maron, and Ray Romano. LEGENDS of comedy, and a 20yo Bo holding his own 👍🏻
Is this why he does the whole "I am Satan, lord of darkness" part in the "We think we know" finale of this special? He creates a catchy beat from the three clips of the vocal tracks with enough loops until the crowd can recognize what he's doing...then calls himself out. I think?
I think it's unrelated cuz, right after, he points upwards, at what we would expect to be God, and hear crickets instead. Just a gag, that Satan responded but God didn't.
I don't know if this helps still three years later but the whole "Satan" and "deepthroathing the mic" bit is a clear tribute to another stand up comedian, the never forgotten Bill Hicks aka The Dark Poet. Check him out!
And just to add on my previous comment, Satan (the goat in bill hicks performances) was a literal stage persona and he used it against oversimple, poppy, teen music as Bo is describing here
I know it's only a snippet in the beginning of the video, but about Bo's harsh words to guy who went onstage, there was someone who asked him on a Reddit AMA in 2016 to talk about the worst instance in which he had to kick someone out of a show, and Bo answered: "There was a drunk guy that wandered on stange in Atlanta and sat at my keyboard. That was strange. I think I told him to kill himself or something. Not my finest hour. [...] Also like, I wasn't totally 'safe.' I was most concerned with just getting the guy out of there, more than doing some sort of subtle take down of him."
you ever hear 4 Chord Song by Axis of Awesome? your description of the money-making formula of pop songs after you listened to the first round of the chorus reminded me of it, because it also talks about the simplicity of pop songs.
it's safe to assume it's usually part of the script, if not always. in his specials he even makes explicit jokes about all the meticulously planned details of his performance. that being said, that's a good question you asked.. come to think of it, it's extremely hard to tell when/if ever he is not performing from a specific plan. this is coming from someone who's been watching him for over a decade lol
I just found you from a long string of watching people react to Bo Burnham and I love your content, man! I think you're really thoughtful and really articulate when it comes to the meaning of his songs. You've definitely earned a new subscriber! I also noticed that you have a bunch of reactions to TOP and Imagine Dragons, and they're definitely two of my favorite artists, so I can't wait to check those out too! As an answer to "is it real or scripted" I'd say yes. Everything you see is real, his thanking is real and the message he wants to pass along is real AND everything you see is a performance down to the gesture, to the step he takes on this or that direction. Everything is perfectly scripted, but that means he's intentional about the serious and real parts of it as well as the over the top acting.
I started watching because of the Bo reactions, and then the Taylor Swift reactions.. and then eventually I was like, “I don’t like 1D, but if he’s reacting to them he probably has some insightful things to say” and was happy to be right about that. Like you mentioned alongside the lyrics, it’s great to listen to music that actually SOUNDS good, no matter the stereotypes placed on certain genres or artist. I don’t care if it’s 1D, Taylor Swift, or NF. If I can tap my foot along with the beat, I can listen to it.
I totally agree, there is no shame in just flat out liking how a song sounds no matter how cliche or typical it is, buuuuuut I do have a greater appreciation and respect for songs with more depth or lyricism etc.
He clearly spent a lot of time working on it while in retirement. Although I also think it’s generally easier to optimize your voice when in a format of different edited videos cut and pasted instead of an hour and a half concert where you constantly need to be energetic. just my thoughts
I know there’s already like 80 comments about it, but definitely check out the Country Song from his Make Happy special. Basically exactly what you were talking about, and hilarious. Its one of my favorites for sure.
Eff is an interesting song by Bo, but it drops the F bomb a lot ... lol (It's literally a long truth bomb) - Also, you should check out The Axis of Awesome YT song "4 Chords." It is pretty old, but shows how just a ton of songs are written with the same chord progressions.
the studio version and music video of this song also does a good/funny job at illustrating the points you were talking abt, i dont know if it deserves a new reaction but definitely check it out
Of course I have to request again that you react to that funny feeling from inside. I love your reactions and I would love to hear your thoughts on it!
There is a talk show clip somewhere. I think Grahm Norton or Conan where Bo talks about that show. Apparently Justin Beiber was their with Ariana Grande snuck in and he found out about it after. If you can find it it's pretty good.
I really think you would love Hook by Blues Traveler. It's the ultimate meta song about writing a hit song, but wanting to be true to yourself, and itself becoming their most popular song. Definitely check it out!!
Hi! I'm here to repeat stuff, the comments that say you MUST watch bo's country song/pandering now! It's perfect for what you were saying about country music
oh boy if you think thats the wildest thing hes ever said you should see his early early stuff. hes talked about how when he started his career he was just a dumb 16 year old on the early days of when people starting becoming big youtubers and everything was just cringey offensive edgy content. he actually made a song about it in inside that you should check out! its called 'problematic', cuz well, yknow. but also i feel like even when he was being 'offensive' it wasnt ever in a truly mean spirited intention, he was just using the current landscape of the social climate to turn it around and throw it back into peoples faces, sort of holding up a mirror to the masses if that makes sense so maybe thats why hes never been truly 'cancelled'. hes never made a mean joke just to be like haha its funny to say fucked up things about people, its more like 'isnt it fucked up that people find this funny'.
The Live performance is amazing and has it's better bits, like when he stand up and does the hitler salute to make fun of his audience, but the music video is REALLY well done and the song is longer.
At the start of we think we know you which is the song that plays right after this he starts it by saying i should have ended that on a higher note… bc if you listen to the last key notes of the piano it sounds like it should be moving up in scale but his last chord is really low…. Yeah just thought id add that
Fun fact one time while performing this song he looked out and Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez were in the crowd when they were back when they were dating or whatever and he felt bad about it.
Pandering (country song) is the obvious next song to react to, but maybe try a deeper cut soon. Maybe some of his album only songs, like “Nerds”, “Eff”, and “Hell of a Ride” (probably my personal favorite song prior to Inside)
Yeah I can definitely understand the whole guilty pleasure with some pretty lazy or uninspired songs. I love Blink 182's All the Small Things, despite the fact that the song was taking pot shots at people pumping out uncreative and lazy music by being even lazier and less creative.
hearing you talk tabout country music is super ironic cause the song pandering by bo is perfect for you the, he literall talks about how cliche country music on the radio is
A recommendation just to watch in your free time after this is the Conan clip about Bo insulting Justin Bieber, he talks about one performance of this song where Bieber was in the audience :)
I just recently found your channel and am loving your Bo react videos, thank you for your thoughtful comments on his songs. Just out of curiosity, I noticed there's a lot of One Direction on your channel, is there a story there or you just really like them? :D Also what is the meaning of what you say at the beginning? Thanks again for your content, I'm really enjoying it and am glad I stumbled on your channel. Thanks for reading my silly questions. :)
Alright Wassaaaww dude?! While I agree with the sentiment here and your reaction/critique of it, as a music producer I have to just chime in here and say it is NOT easy to write a "dumb" pop song. It absolutely still has to connect with people on an emotional level if the song is going to have success, and that's just not as easy as anyone imagines.
Wassaa! And fantastic point. I will not deny that a lot of work still goes in to it. I have never done anything like it (and could never do anything like it, even with all the cliches and catchy beats). They do still put in work and I can respect that.
About the small reaction segment (that I'm guessing is on Patreon) about Bo kicking that guy out and telling him to k!ll himself, he has answered on a Reddit AMA regarding that night saying he feels ashamed of having done that (that is what I'm taking from it). Question: “Bo, when is the worst time you have had to kick someone out of a show? [...]” Answer: “There was a drunk guy that wondered on stage in atlanta and sat at my keyboard. That was strange. I think I told him to kill himself or something, not my finest hour. And appreciate the kind words dude!” “Also like, I wasn't totally "safe." I was most concerned with just getting the guy out of there, more than doing some sort of subtle take down of him.”
Oh interesting. So almost like it was a spur of the moment kind of thing and he didn't know how to handle it and ended up saying all that stuff but looking back on it realizes it wasn't he best moment.
@@suffireax yeah I definitely saw him panic up there, it was probably just out of stress. He's said on the same AMA that he can always barely manage to save the show after hecklers interrupt and it makes him nervous
I would love to see you react to music that wasn't as, like you said, "drone like". You have a great eye for analyzing lyrics & you're clearly perceptive and creative.. I don't even watch your 1d reactions at all.
Agreed! The Tim Minchin & Bo Burnham ones have been great for this reason. I mentioned in another comment to check out Mike Love. ‘Permanent Holiday’ is a great one to start with.
"He just deepthroated his own microphone!" is something you don't hear every day...

Yes and he even wrote a song called kill your self its a joke in the "fandom"
Yes! He also doesn’t punch down with his jokes. His more “offensive” jokes don’t have bad vibes. If that makes sense.

Awesome! You should definitely react to his music video of this song that he made a few years later. It’s so good 💕💕
I love the facial expressions that Bo Burnham does in his songs it makes them so much more entertaining
You should watch "look who's inside again" and "That happy feeling" from inside, they are great.
Yeah also
It's "That funny feeling "
Just FYI nothing important 💜💜

As an answer to "is it real or scripted" I'd say yes. One funny thing I haven't seen any reactors call out is that this is one of those four chord songs.
Why did I just now realize how much Bo’s voice has changed since this time to inside?
He clearly spent a lot of time working on it while in retirement. Although I also think it’s generally easier to optimize your voice when in a format of different edited videos cut and pasted instead of an hour and a half concert where you constantly need to be energetic. just my thoughts
After your mini rant on country, you definitely to listen to Bo Burnham's country song now.
The melody at 10:30 is so good.

What you're talking about at 6:15
... well now you have to react to Bo's song "Pandering"
absolutel bangin bussin bussin
There is a similar song from the late 80's called Song for whoever by the Beautiful South
There is a talk show clip somewhere. I think Grahm Norton or Conan where Bo talks about that show. Apparently Justin Beiber was their with Ariana Grande snuck in and he found out about it after.

Haha I see what you did there
You should react to problematic ! On inside. It *kinda* addresses how he’s said problematic stuff in a lot of his past performances.
It's not that there was more creativity in the past, it's that there's been more time to select what bits of culture are worthy of surviving

A part of me feels like he doesn't really have a script for any of this he just makes it up as he goes along I think.
Fun fact one time while performing this song he looked out and Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez were in the crowd when they were back when they were dating or whatever and he felt bad about it.
I think the music video and the produced version of the song better captures what he was going for with this song, but the live is good as well.
I agree
Pandering (country song) is the obvious next song to react to, but maybe try a deeper cut soon. Maybe some of his album only songs, like “Nerds”, “Eff”, and “Hell of a Ride” (probably my personal favorite song prior to Inside)
The music industry can be very... predatory, to little girls in terms of marketing and the songs
Excited about hearing rant.
Fun fact, he actually performed this once when Justin Bieber was in the audience but he didnt know
That is funny
Bruh, you almost have to do Bo's country song. For real forreal

you should definitely check out Panderin', the country song, too
after hearing what you were saying at 6:20 about country music, I highly recommend that u watch Bo Burnham's "country song" .
I highly recommend the music video (studio version) of this! It’s SOOOOO good.
If you can’t stand pop country, I highly recommend listening to bos song pandering or “country song”. You’ll enjoy it
rant is decent, but after what you've talked about in this video, "Panderin'" is probably the one you should do next. imo
Great reaction, as always!!
YOU SHOULD REACT TO THAT FUNNY FEELING FROM INSIDE
Bo’s Country song is a go to
Alright Wassaaaww dude?!
No one:
Suffi Reax: We will suck it dry!
😂😂
justin beaber was accualy present when he sung it
ran to the comments to see how many people are recommending Pandering 💀💀💀
Everyone lol
About the small reaction segment (that I'm guessing is on Patreon) about Bo kicking that guy out and telling him to k!ll himself, he has answered on a Reddit AMA regarding that night saying he feels ashamed of having done that (that is what I'm taking from it).
Question: “Bo, when is the worst time you have had to kick someone out of a show? [...]”
Answer: “There was a drunk guy that wondered on stage in atlanta and sat at my keyboard.
Lol you have to do his country song next after this commentary 😂
You gotta do his country song parody called Pandering! So funny!
Do a reaction on Ren - Dominoes
It talks about what you were talking about on 10:54 and how models affect people, especially teens
Apparently he found out after one of his shows doing this that Justin Bieber had been in the audience, lol.
I would love to see you react to music that wasn't as, like you said, "drone like". You have a great eye for analyzing lyrics & you're clearly perceptive and creative.. I don't even watch your 1d reactions at all.
Do you have an specific recommendations? Anything to point me in the right direction? (no pun intended lol)
Agreed! The Tim Minchin & Bo Burnham ones have been great for this reason. I mentioned in another comment to check out Mike Love. ‘Permanent Holiday’ is a great one to start with.
@@suffireax Eminem
I think you made the right choice in watching this one first, although the polished music video version is more appropriate for this song.
You should defo do “problematic”
