as someone who has what i'd describe as an overactive empathetic response, it is fucking exhausting to constantly put yourself in EVERYONE's shoes and feel emotions for every situation- and one of the best ways i think i naturally developed to counteract that is by finding humor in anything- everything- it helps to disassociate and pull me out of those situations where i really have no reason to be feeling the emotional response i do. and this song is a great kind of explanation or exploration of that.
It's not that people don't LIKE being empathetic, it's just that it's tiring and depressing. Feeling empathetic for a lot of people all the time really gets draining, it just depresses you and tires you out, so you turn to laughs- making dark jokes that can take the sad topic and turn it on its head to something you can enjoy a bit more.
I think what's the most difficult thing to deal with as a Bo fan is the fact that he many times doesn't only give you one side of anything. He provides truth. Laughter is good it does make people feel better, It also takes a psychopathic person to come up with those jokes. And sometimes, being empathetic to every single sad thing is so overwhelming. I think at the Roast of Justin Bieber Pete Davidson made the joke “Soul Plane the movie was the most traumatic experience in my life involving a plane. And my dad died in 9/11”. Also a key statement you missed in the song “because my empathy is bumming me out.” They are making jokes about bad situations because they’re unable to continue to emotionally invest. I think the sociopath comment says the jokes are tasteless, but possibly not without reason. Referring to the empathy line. Because like the Pete Davidson joke, it’s all about context and not just a quick laugh.

I feel like the "Laughter is the key to solve all the sad stuff." is a deeper meaning there to himself. Like whenever he's sad or depressed (Like he mentioned earlier with the "Same sad guy looking at mirrors" thing) he turns to comedy to help him cope with it, but then that causes him to have his panic attacks which make him even more sad which makes him to comedy even more, and around around we go on this endless cycle.

i think he's spot on about laughter, i had a stroke in 2017 and suffered massive brain damage, was in an induced coma for a month, then spent several more months in a coma ward, bedbound and barely able to do anything, which was depressing and demeaning to an extent I can't really articulate, luckily i had a couple of friends who were willing to mock my situation with some very dark humour, being able to laugh at my situation kept me sane, and I believe it was the key to my fairly rapid recovery. Laughing at terrible events robs them of the ability to drive you into depression and/or suicide. Bo has clearly suffered from some very deep depression, and realises that laughter is much more useful than being told to pull yourself together and being told that everythiing will be ok, when you know it definitely won't

Reminds me a bit of a gaming youtuber, he mostly does minecraft videos but also other stuff, he's got a muscle disorder he doesn't want to name and is wheelchair bound with various dangerous complications. Same with men making jokes about gender inequality, it can sound woke but it usually ends up being very underhanded, and is just a way to capitalise on a situation that doesn't apply to the comedian at all. The golden rule of dark comedy is that you can only make such jokes about things you are directly affected by and never at the expense of causing real harm like by influencing a narrative that's not yours to insert yourself in

the way i judge what jokes are funny vs not cool is the punching down vs punching yourself vs punching up frame work...punching up is making fun of things above you, more power, more control, more money, stuff like that. so making jokes about the problems corporations or governments have. punching yourself is making fun of problems you have, like the example you gave of people who dont have legs making jokes about doing leg day at the gym. then punching down are punching those "below" you, those with less. like an able bodied person making fun of someone elses disability, a millionare making jokes about the struggles people in poverty have. you can punch yourself, you can punch up, but you dont punch down

I also think he's trying to make a point of the most tragic things always being the funniest, it is a coping mechanism for humans. Everyone knows tragic things are tragic. But joking about it relieves a bit of the sadness. I liked your interpretation though, I do also think he's trying to raise awareness when joking about sensitive subjects.

Very much like Art is Dead.. this was during his Carlin-esque brand humor before his last show.. he grew more and more aware of the world problems vs his job. I found his line of “my empathy is bumming me out” very interesting and telling. Empathy is such a misused word over sympathy, but he nailed it... same time, showing fir a fraction second how this all truly bothers him. Hes def an empath.. and it sounds like a very very deliberate use of the word as a possible juxtaposition to when he calls himself a sociopath.. which is an empaths literal opposite. And just like Art is Dead (i feel they have very similar formats content wise but diff stories) but just like Art is Dead, he self depricates ironically (crossing his eyes) bc i believe this time around, he is taking shots at the audience, although unfairly, bc had the audience known the larger scope he was painting, the small jokes wouldnt have hit. So its a bit unfair of him if you want to think of it seriously. But i think his level of self deprication in Art is Dead showed the near exact same ironic style jokes. Its as if he fell into a pocket of certain type of story telling. Bc if you recall, in Art is Dead.. his punchlines would be abt people starving bc he wanted his lights for his show.. hed want all these artificial expensive things, then kick the audiences rears by juxtaposing with how that money couldve been spent on feeding families for 40 nights. He did the same here. All the jokes.. childish, edgy, smart, then pulling the rug out underneath everyone by suddenly cranking the jokes up 300% cruder as if, again, to say to the audience “this is what you wanted right?!” But with that death stare. But yeah, hes unironically def a sad boy here lashing out. So, I don’t really have a rule for what subjects I will and won’t laugh at. Laughter is involuntary, so if I laugh, then it’s funny to me, regardless of the subject.
Personally speaking and for the record, I don’t have any real answers as to the meanings behind Bo’s comedic acts, however my thoughts are, he makes us think deeper about common things, humor about tragic thins is in many ways it’s part of the human condition and perhaps it’s our way of coping with the trauma, of course I have heard this many times, truth or not, I have not a clue but it certainly seems to fit. As for some people’s sensitivity when it comes to laughing at something tragic, it’s hard for some, it’s hard for me to see the humor in certain things as well but maybe we just have to allow it and move on and understand that not everyone will get it or is maybe too close to an event that caused the trauma. But it’s not at all meant to be insensitive, it’s humor and people who are traumatized will never be on board with it. IDK, just some thought’s, I’m not even sure any of us will ever know the correct answer to anything, we all come in with our own perspectives and we have these perspectives because of upbringing, personal experiences, ideas, thoughts, agenda’s, Ego is also part of it, there are many variables to take into account, not everything can be broken down into being simple black and white, I realize most of humanity likes to t think about many things as being black and white because it makes it easier to deal with and digest perhaps. There are comedians who aren't affected by racism but they make jokes about it in good taste or bad to make themselves feel better about it and act like they are advocating when really they are just stealing the narrative which they don't have the place to. Same with men making jokes about gender inequality, it can sound woke but it usually ends up being very underhanded, and is just a way to capitalise on a situation that doesn't apply to the comedian at all. The golden rule of dark comedy is that you can only make such jokes about things you are directly affected by and never at the expense of causing real harm like by influencing a narrative that's not yours to insert yourself in
That remind me of a episode of Mad Men when an airplane crash and every guy is joking about, but then one of them recive the news that his father was in that plane and feel weird, especially because he was joking about that before. (Sorry for bad english)

the way i judge what jokes are funny vs not cool is the punching down vs punching yourself vs punching up frame work...punching up is making fun of things above you, more power, more control, more money, stuff like that. so making jokes about the problems corporations or governments have. punching yourself is making fun of problems you have, like the example you gave of people who dont have legs making jokes about doing leg day at the gym. then punching down are punching those "below" you, those with less. like an able bodied person making fun of someone elses disability, a millionare making jokes about the struggles people in poverty have. you can punch yourself, you can punch up, but you dont punch down

I also think he's trying to make a point of the most tragic things always being the funniest, it is a coping mechanism for humans. Everyone knows tragic things are tragic. But joking about it relieves a bit of the sadness. I liked your interpretation though, I do also think he's trying to raise awareness when joking about sensitive subjects.
I fall into a similar category as Bo. I see people, the world, and things differently and we want to help make the change but at the end of the day, ignorance overpowers rational thinking in today’s society unfortunately. Great reaction. Bo has several more you should check out.

Very much like Art is Dead.. this was during his Carlin-esque brand humor before his last show.. he grew more and more aware of the world problems vs his job. I found his line of “my empathy is bumming me out” very interesting and telling. Empathy is such a misused word over sympathy, but he nailed it... same time, showing fir a fraction second how this all truly bothers him. Hes def an empath.. and it sounds like a very very deliberate use of the word as a possible juxtaposition to when he calls himself a sociopath.. which is an empaths literal opposite. And just like Art is Dead (i feel they have very similar formats content wise but diff stories) but just like Art is Dead, he self depricates ironically (crossing his eyes) bc i believe this time around, he is taking shots at the audience, although unfairly, bc had the audience known the larger scope he was painting, the small jokes wouldnt have hit. So its a bit unfair of him if you want to think of it seriously. But i think his level of self deprication in Art is Dead showed the near exact same ironic style jokes. Its as if he fell into a pocket of certain type of story telling. Bc if you recall, in Art is Dead.. his punchlines would be abt people starving bc he wanted his lights for his show.. hed want all these artificial expensive things, then kick the audiences rears by juxtaposing with how that money couldve been spent on feeding families for 40 nights. He did the same here. All the jokes.. childish, edgy, smart, then pulling the rug out underneath everyone by suddenly cranking the jokes up 300% cruder as if, again, to say to the audience “this is what you wanted right?!” But with that death stare. But yeah, hes unironically def a sad boy here lashing out. The early days of his mental health slips... as opposed to snarky, happy, smiling, laughing Bo, doing the music in his room like, “Words words words” or “bo yo”... again.. Tragic Genius, Bo.

So, I don’t really have a rule for what subjects I will and won’t laugh at. Laughter is involuntary, so if I laugh, then it’s funny to me, regardless of the subject.

Personally speaking and for the record, I don’t have any real answers as to the meanings behind Bo’s comedic acts, however my thoughts are, he makes us think deeper about common things, humor about tragic thins is in many ways it’s part of the human condition and perhaps it’s our way of coping with the trauma, of course I have heard this many times, truth or not, I have not a clue but it certainly seems to fit.
As for some people’s sensitivity when it comes to laughing at something tragic, it’s hard for some, it’s hard for me to see the humor in certain things as well but maybe we just have to allow it and move on and understand that not everyone will get it or is maybe too close to an event that caused the trauma. But it’s not at all meant to be insensitive, it’s humor and people who are traumatized will never be on board with it.
IDK, just some thought’s, I’m not even sure any of us will ever know the correct answer to anything, we all come in with our own perspectives and we have these perspectives because of upbringing, personal experiences, ideas, thoughts, agenda’s, Ego is also part of it, there are many variables to take into account, not everything can be broken down into being simple black and white, I realize most of humanity likes to t think about many things as being black and white because it makes it easier to deal with and digest perhaps.
But back to Bo, it’s what he does best is makes us think on a deeper level, the answers we get are within ourselves, the truth does not belong to me or to you or too anyone, the truth whatever that is or where it may lead anyone is always in question. I guess we could call it Wisdom. IDK.
