- The latest video on Kanpai Planet dives deep into Chichibu Red Wine Cask 2023, the latest (relatively) widespread Single Malt release from the Chichibu Distillery. 11800 bottles of this liquid were released on 1 September 2023. I was super excited to try this Ichiro's Malt whisky, and finally got round to reviewing it in the snow in Chichibu! How is it? Watch to find out!

I am glad that I got it few weeks ago in SF and thats the first Chichibu I bought, even if thats not the best Chichibu you had, I still cannot wait to open. Haha

Congrats for the 7 K again, my friend ! Great also to see you with something less convincing, and then to put it into the perspective of the other wine casks that the distillery do or did offer...so a balanced review for an unbalanced whisky, right ? it alas happens also here in France where a lot of distilleries do rely partly or solely on wine casks (in order to come across as French distilleries) & not all do master it in my opinion, but when they do it is fantastic... Kanpaï !
Indeed Greg! I'm reminded of the poem "There was a little girl" by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow when it comes to Wine Cask whisky!

Love sherry finished whisky, but have never had a red wine finished whisky I liked.

This is a great review Mac, thanks for being absolutely honest and not falling into the fanboy category. Unfortunately I haven't tried any Chichibu yet, if you don't count the Glover blended malt they did with Ardnamurchan so I'm really looking forward to trying some in London and hope to see you too. Thanks for the honest and diplomatic review! Just watched your video on the CCB Red Wine Cask and fully agree that it's not the best representation of the cask type coming out of the distillery.
Tried it in Oct and the difference between the very pleasant nose and the very tannic palette was jarring.

Good to finally meet you last month, and great review Mac, haha love the honesty! I agree, this release was far below some of the amazing Kusuda, and other red wine single casks they’ve released. Congrats on hitting 7k!

Definitely a picturesque spot to review the whisky - you never cease to capture the beauty of Japan in your videos. Shame that this bottling itself is a little underwhelming, but as always appreciate your genuine and honest reviews. As you’ve said and reviewed, Chichubu has some great quality red wine cask strength bottling, but this one just seems a bit of a miss.

As for the whisky, honesty is key in my reviews, even when a bottling falls short. I agree, while this one might not have hit the mark, there's always something new and exciting on the horizon.

@@KanpaiPlanet I rather suspect they will be in a different league. The Australian whiskey producers have only had wine/port casks for a long long time and are masters.
Sullivan's Cove, TIB & the right bottles from Black Gate or Overeem will not be a fair fight and hold their own against the likes of Signatory/Edradour and Longrow.
Sounds like I'll be drinking a lot of good whisky! 🤓🥃
