As always, the quality of your video is top notch. I put you and First Phil among the top. If you were doing Bourbon you’d have one of the largest Whiskey Tuber channels but the community would be missing a much needed voice on the topic of Japanese Whiskey. Thank you!

Great episode! Truth be told your content over the years has helped me get more and more into Japanese whisky (against my wallet's wishes 😂). And also when I learned about Masataka and Rita's life and struggles it made me think it would make for a great movie, and now I find out they made a multi episode drama. I need to watch that.
Keep up the great work 🥃

The rise of Japanese whisky was always sad news to me... gone are the times when I could get a Yamazaki 12 for 3000 yen... the sad thing is that many of the people who drive the price up are the same people that buy a Porsche "just because"...

If I remember right Japanese whisky started as directly reverse-engineered Scotch whisky and has very much remained so. Imitate the best and do it well.

Glad to see you back with a great summary about Japanese whisky, Mac ! Well done....So many things to say about this topic, and not enough time to write here & now...Western language whisky books wise, one could also quote those from Dave Broom (the whisky writer who might have tasted the most numerous Karuizawas along with Serge Valentin, and, of course, La MDW +TWE owners, and then, probably me (with 42 expressions tasted so far...) and Ulf Buxrud...Nonjatta from Chris was indeed the most important source of information & opinion about those Japanese whiskies, back in the days, blog wise, and beyond...Then, in my own collection, if I had to present a Top 30 or Top 10 of my bottles, you can be sure than at least 3 to 5 of them would be Japanese (and from Yoichi, Miyagikyo, Karuizawa, Hanyu...). Kanpaï & continue to rule the world with your expert craft, my friend !

This was, once more, an episode worth your time. I actually don't wanted it to end so soon because, I could have watched this material for an hour. While writing this, I'm currently enjoying my dram of the NAS Yamazaki. Right now, I'm into Whisky from the Shin Group. Ordered the Shinobu Mizunara Blend after someone recommended it to me. And for the first time ever and reserved for my upcoming vacation, the Akashi White Oak. It's more of the basic stuff but especially the Akashi is harder to get here in Germany. From various ranges some while back to very limited stock now.
By the way: Despite some weird scenes, Lost in Translation is one of my modern classics. Yeah, gonna love it till today. Huge Bill Murray fan with a Scarlett Johansson Bonus. I'm a huge movie geek and Sophia Coppola hit the spot for me with this one. Back in 2005 (first time I've watched the movie), I didn't know a single thing about japanese Whisky. So it's always a joy to come back nowadays watching the Hibiki scenes.
Please keep up your great work here and Kanpai, Jámas and Zum Wohl from Germany!

There are some online shops in Germany, one in particular, that has 20+ different Akashi expressions. Most of them single cask, single malt whisky. I am not naming the place here but you might want to search for 10th letter of the alphabet and the word whisky.

Excellent introduction to the topic. Also the choice of actress/model Haruka Igawa for the kakubin highball campaign was a master stroke in maximising appeal among salarymen of that generation, and she’s still promoting it some 15 years later as that customer base continues to mature

If we're crediting CM talent, I'd say credit for the early success mentioned in the video should go to Koyuki (2007-2011) rather than Haruka Igawa (2014-present). There hasn't been a new kakubin CM in like a year though, so some people are thinking Suntory may bring in a new face soon.

You’ve kept us waiting too long, Mac! Impeccable production quality as always, and very informative/interesting.
Bill Murray definitely was a catalyst for the Hibiki shortages haha! No doubt this demand moved across other age statement Japanese whiskies. Excellent for the distilleries, not so much for anyone looking to get their hands on age statement Japanese whiskies.
Will be interesting to see what these distilleries do over the next decade or so when it comes to later year age statements. I feel like anything new will be snapped up and resold at exorbitant prices.
It very much seems like an almost entirely investors market these days, which is a shame, really.

Having travelled the country fairly extensively since 2013, I too miss the days of casual age statement purchases, but admittedly am excited tracking down and experiencing the ‘new kids on the block’.
