Housing prices are already out of hand for the local community. Because people from bigger cities move in cheaper then what they paid, but outrageous for the local community. This is a big contributing factor in the homelessness.

Hi Jack, that's not actually the case. It's the convenient assumption to make. Affordable housing is an issue across many cities in our country but not the driver for homelessness.
The real stats are: that 38.5% of people experiencing homelessness say they are suffering from mental illness, 26% from physical disabilities, and 37.5% from substance abuse disorders. People are hurting with nowhere to turn. “Decades of deinstitutionalizing mental illness locally and nationally have made it impossible to meet the increasing demand for mental health care, Oregon has less than one-tenth the number of state hospital beds for mentally ill patients than it had in the 1950s, and yet the demand for beds has grown.” said Neal Rotman, interim deputy director of Multnomah County’s mental health and addiction services division.

@@movingtoportlandoregon Like it was stated it's a contributing factor. It seems like a easy cop-out to blame homelessness on the mentally ill and drug addicts. Here's another fact, people are choosing to be homeless in Portland because they cant afford to take care of themselves, while paying outrageous prices for housing. It's literally from out of state people setting the price for what they think it should be, not what the community can afford.
And if mental institutes need more beds what are you doing about it? Seeing that your in real estate... And if you say that you're not doing anything about it, do you really care about the community?

Thank you Tiffany! I have family in SD. You don't need an SUV in Tualatin or surrounding area of Portland. All wheel drive is nice to have though for the all weather traction and the occasional snow that sticks to the ground. BUT not necessary, you would just want to stay in if the snow sticks before they clear the roads. Check out the video about weather I have and that might help give you an idea as well. We bought a house in a part of city we can afford. We can visit all the neat neighborhoods, bars, restaurants etc. The only drawback for us is the lack of snow. But Mt. Hood is close for skiing. Note that the West Coast is a monsoon climate. The east has precipitation year-round and may have more yearly precipitation.

Hi Janice, thanks for watching. Yes real estate has risen in price across the entire US over the last 30 years, especially on both coasts. The point of my videos is to show people moving to Portland Oregon what it's like through my eyes and experiences. Everyone has a different view point and that's ok. What part of the country do you live in?

  • @studogable

Neighborhoods - dead on. Loved the Mississippi neighborhood to be specific, but there are so many. Ditto the friendliness. I'm from the midwest, and we pride ourselves on this point, but Portland is, if anything, more friendly. The traffic was also very manageable, as you said. I'm not sure I agree on the museums, though. That was a bit of a disappointment. Can you be a little more specific? Perhaps I just missed them.
One pro you did not mention was the music scene. I got to the 1905 and Blue Diamond when I was there - both top notch by any reasonable measure. I realize that your video was more aimed at young families, but singles and empty nesters won't be hurting for adequate nightlife.
The weather is not the downside you might think. Scrolling across Portland's average high temps, I'm seeing very mild winters, with average highs between 47 and 52F. In Nebraska, we wear shorts when it gets that warm.
Glad to hear that homelessness is trending down. It is obviously jaw-dropping in 2022. Any civic leader who can tackle that deserves a Nobel Prize. I hesitate to call this a positive, but Portland seems to have the most affluent homeless people I've ever seen. That's a terrible term, but in San Francisco, the homeless organize their possessions in shopping carts. In Portland, people experiencing homelessness have RVs and commercial tents. This may indicate that many are "working poor" as opposed to people who are "unemployable". I'm probably putting my foot in it here, but there may be a glimmer of hope for the city's quandary.

So I’m from CA and I moved to Portland when I was 24. No wonder locals hated non-natives moving to Oregon because here we are in 2022 and it’s becoming CA… overcrowded and overpriced. What a huge bummer. I live in Pennsylvania now and for the last 10 years and now NJ and NY residents are buying up the land and houses making it unaffordable to live in your own state with what PA pays for an income. It needs to stop already. Not everyone wants to commute and work yourself to death to have a little bit of comfort. It’s scary to see how bad it’s gotten all over the US because of greed.

    • @movingtoportlandoregon
      @movingtoportlandoregon  2 роки тому +2

Hi Brittany, housing affordability and rising prices is a complex issue. It's not a simple black and white subject. Even the meaning of "overcrowding" is subjective. I don't find Portland to be overcrowded at all, but you might. That's the reason for me making these videos is to show people what it's like to live in Portland through my eyes. There is an article that get's into housing across the US by The NY Times below. There are a lot of factors to why prices are rising fast in 80% of US cities. It's not greed driving prices but supply and demand along with low interest rates. Now that interest rates have been rising it should slow the rising cost of homes. www.nytimes.com/2022/01/20/upshot/home-prices-surging.html

    • @SuperKoRn1234
      @SuperKoRn1234 2 роки тому +1

I completely agree. It does seem as if the rich are buying up real estate like crazy even in places they live far from. Let locals be able to afford their own homes. If you want to visit somewhere for the winter/summer you don't need to buy a house there.

    • @toastymcgee9788
      @toastymcgee9788 2 роки тому

Ok but why is that? It's a desirable area, it doesn't have to be unaffordable. In the US as a whole, we do not invest enough in housing and urban planning that makes any sense. Any desirable city is "overpriced." There are too many people who want to live there and they don't build housing fast enough. That and the emphasis on single family homes everywhere doesn't help.

The comments about this video being about selling Portland to potential home buyers is funny because more than anything, right off the bat, what stood out to me is that this video is from the perspective of wealthy, highly privileged people. Most people cannot simply choose to live in Lake Oswego. Alphabet district? I never heard that before. Twenty third (or trendy turd as we've always called it) is hardly livable for most people in their 20's unless they have a trust fund or a sugar daddy. If you are from Portland, of course the city seems awful now but rest assured, it's better than a lot of or most cities because this wild ride our government has had us on has affected every city and it will get to the point where only wealthy investors and big banks will own real estate. But yeah, this video is intended for wealthy people for sure!

    Cons:
    1) homeless, it's unfortunate and they're not dangerous. But people don't want to be hassled everywhere they go. One of the draws to Portland used to be how clean it is. Now it's homeless camps almost everywhere, trash on side of the road, and graffiti is common.
    2) weather, there is only two seasons in Portland. Summer which is super comfortable. Low humidity, dry, sunny. Winter used to be a pro to me, but after 15yrs it's actually a drag. Snow is rare but when it does happen the city has like 3 snow plows and doesn't used salt. They use a natural alternative (basically onion juice) and it just doesn't cut it. City is a living nightmare when it does snow and yes your employer will demand you come to work even if the news says not to. The grey sky's, early sunsets are the drag. Fall is like a week long, hardly any color change happens. Spring is short lived. It's just depressing 10 months of the yr.
    3) traffic....yes in 2022 traffic is "ok". Its back to 2010 level of traffic which is about 30mins to get anywhere. But before COVID traffic was 8th worst in the US according to TomTom. To go from Portland to Vancouver could be 2hrs drive....not even joking. I know because I've made the trip hundreds of times. Portland to Gresham could be 1-2hrs. The city got too big for the hwys it has and on ramps are short. Licenses are handed by like candy. Turn signals are optional, everyone follows way too close.....maybe 1 or 2 car lengths at most doing 60mph. I wouldn't say people speed, but they follow too close which means lots of braking, which means lots of go, stop, go, stop on the hwys....people havent figured out how to give 5seconds of following distance so traffic can flow at a decent pace. I've been all around the US as a professional driver, portlanders are some of the absolute most spacially unaware drivers on the road.
    4) housing prices are a con....yes they're cheap by west coast standards, but all the Californians coming to Portland don't seem to realize that people who work the service industry can't afford to live here. The balance is off kilter. A typical Portland or Vancouver house is 2 bedrooms.....3 bedrooms don't seem to be nearly as common. Basements super super rare....maybe 1 out of 40 houses will have one. Garages aren't rare but generally it's 1 car only and ppl tend to not use them for that and just use them to horde junk. Size of the homes is smaller than rest of US also. Prices maybe are "reasonable" by California standards, but for a normal working class family who has 2 kids and does man stuff like oil changes......it's just depressing especially when youll be in a bidding war with like 18 other people and investors to get the shack.
    5) food scene - used to be a huge pro. Food scene was too notch before COVID. But Oregon and Washington had some of the strongest and longest lasting covid restrictions which destroyed the food scene. Portland was more fancy type places, grab and go wasn't too much of a thing....other than food trucks. No one wants a steak to go basically. So alot of the top talent packed up and moved to places like Texas and Idaho. Now we're left with chains and a couple nice places that charge a huge premium because they're all that's left in a city where everyone has a gourmet palette. Pizza for example. It's generally thick and doughy with lots of crazy toppings....mediocre unless u like California style. What would be considered a small by ny standards (they consider a large) will set you back $25 or more. BBQ doesn't exist, just look away now. Yes there are some BBQ places, but they're embarrassing. I'm sorry Portland but comfort food just isn't your strong suite.
    6) boring as hell....yeah it's great for outdoors...camping and hiking are hard to beat. But that's ALL there is to do. Theme parks aren't a thing here. The coast is basically unusable. The water is super cold and quite rough.....you aren't going to the beach to tan. The beauty is cool but if you like swimming look at another state because Oregon and Washington swimming is surprisingly rare. Only rich people can do it on the regular. Book camping 6+ months in advance also, last minute decisions won't generally work out cuz like I said only thing to do is, is camp and hike so they book up quick. There is the zoo and omsi I guess but how often you really doing that ?
    7) jobs......the Portland portfolio isn't very diverse. There are jobs here, but opportunities are limited and other cities with cheaper houses pay more for same work.
    8) removed from rest of country.
If you have kids, how will they be able to "make it "?? They won't be able to afford a home or apartment here. Most of the time, the kids can just move to the nearest cheaper city next door. Well I got news for ya, that doesn't exist here. For some reason even rural towns are expensive here despite no jobs. It's the weirdest thing. There aren't many cities to speak of either. Odds are very good your kids will move several states away just to make ends meet.
    9) morally void, strip clubs and bikini coffee everywhere and tons of simps who support them. All for freedom and that's cool, but basically if you have daughter's they'll end up doing it when they're older because it's super normalized. Child trafficking is also a problem here people don't like to acknowledge.
    10) schools are a joke. Basically borderline not naturally recognized a few times.
    11) very hard to make friends....people are flaky and fake. Not rude or mean, but they're very introverted which I like, but it does make making friends difficult. Employers who come in from other states find the culture difficult because they force employees to participate in activities when everyone just wants to go home. OT is mandatory basically everywhere you work also. Odds are you'll be working 50hr weeks here because it's cheaper for employers and Oregons OT laws are lax. If you have any level of work ethic you will be taken advantage of here.
    12) taxes.....actually over all they're not that bad. Most other states nickle and dime you on everything so over all it adds up. Here its less so. Oregons income tax is one of the highest in the country but they don't have sales tax or toll roads (right now). But unless you constantly buy stuff all the time, you're better off being in Washington without income tax but has sales tax.
    13) incoherently liberal to a detriment. Nothing inherently wrong with progressive policies, but Portland throws out any kind of common sense just so they can appease the SJW's. Riots happen every couple yrs and usually about nothing, just an excuse to loot and cause millions of dollars in property damage. The city just down plays it and try to show empathy because they know these are the ppl who vote for them. Ecoterroism has always been a thing here. The city is just very extreme and close minded to any opposition. Those crazy memes you see, those are the voters in this city. During the riots of 2021 people had their houses broken into and were told by antifa to get out and protest and they're all just cool with this. If someone broke into my home I'm not joining their cause and they're gonna get shot most likely. If you're ok with this level of extremism go for it, maybe it's a plus for you. Me I'd rather be surrounded by more level headed individuals. Most portlanders are reasonable but the activists are much louder and get what they want.....portlanders just cower in fear.
    14) music scene sucks ass if you're into any kind of rock music. Seattle is much better for that. Portlands "rock music" is just old guys listening to classics. Punk and metal aren't a thing here. Most of the music here is whale noises and hippie acoustic guitars. Of course you got tons and tons of wanna be rappers on the side walk trying to get attention.
    -------
    Pros
    1) hardly any mosquitos
    2) mushrooms are cheap in stores
    3) crime is quite low for a city this size.....property crime is high but violent is low
    4) reason temperature all year round 80-40
    5) finding a halfway decent school is more of a challenge than finding a safe area to live...the city doesn't really have any ghettos. They're all fairly decent. Some rougher areas but nothing compared to most large cities.
    6) no pro sports......do the trail blazers even count? I mean basketball is popular here, but my impression of big sports is most people want NFL and MLB. Idk, im NOT a sports guy at all. I'm more of the intellectual type so it's nice that the city doesn't have football brain.
    7) old cars are easy to come by because the weather is mild and they don't salt the roads. It's not uncommon to see 80s cars still driving on the road by average ppl.

@@movingtoportlandoregon idk I'd the area does. I used to love it before COVID and when my kids were small, but now they're young teens it's pretty awful seeing them get a half-assed education. I make good money as still can't afford a house here.
I think if you got in super early (2012 or 13) you're probably pretty happy seeing a $250k investment turn into half a million in just a few yrs....I'd be happy too, but over all it's terrible long term news because it's not sustainable and our children will need to move away because of greed.
That's most places, but Portland has the worst answer to the problem. Instead of making it cheaper for construction companies to build new homes or ban flippers from buying houses under 1,300 sq ft.....they just make it so row homes are now legal...,which is ok and all....but people really want their own 4 walls. I personally don't like hearing my neighbors fight, babies screaming, and loud music at inappropriate times of night. I want 4 walls of my own and I don't think im unique for the desire. Whoever thought townhomes were the answer probably came up with the open office concept too and tries to force his/her awful idea down millennials throats by making fake news claiming how millennials love it....when in reality we all hate it, HATE it.
But yeah, if you're a liberal professional with too much money it's a good safe city.
If you got in early is a great investment that'll never happen again.
If you're a first time home buyer in 2021+ you'll need to move out of state or just be ok renting the rest of your life. Oregon is now just northern California.

You nailed it, Verdad. I lived in Portland from 2000-2022, and before then had visited often from 1980-2000 as I had family there. I worked at Portland State and retired from there, so I am very familiar with downtown Portland, as well as pretty much every neighborhood. Cullen is a realtor -- don't get me started on realtors. P.S. I owned a house in PDX, helped with a rental house my dad owned, and sold his house after he passed away. Had to work with more than a few realtors in my time.
P.S. We left Portland earlier this year because we didn't like living there any more, because of what the city has become in terms of politics, economics, pretty much everything you've talked about.

Very judgmental point of view.... I’ve lived in inner Portland area for 15 years and for one thing you’re wrong on, there are absolutely 4 amazing colorful seasons. Spring is absolutely spectacular, I am a photographer who has been photographing the seasonal flowers and changes for years. And summers are absolutely delightful minus some heat waves... and Falls are absolutely gorgeous!

Its ridicules what we have endured the homeless people steal anything that's not nailed down bullet holes in the house pets murdered assaulted number of times.it truly saddens me to see what Portland has become. Hi Steven, sorry to hear you had a such a bad experience with your new build. I'm also a real estate investor so I know the city of Portland is slow to approve building permits. The right architect can tremendously help smooth out that process by having an inside track.

I'm sorry but your video is not truthful. Obviously because you are a Real Estate Agent you are biased
If you told the truth you would not get very many buyers. I'm an Oregon native and our city used to be wonderful and affordable.
In the last 20 yrs it has become crowded and unpleasant. My son is moving out of state because renting prices are sky high. And of course we have to have all the California Restaurants and shops because all the Californians that moved here made that appealing to them but Oregonians didn't want or need them
You also mentioned traffic Are you kidding me? Traffic is a nightmare now everywhere! I hate that!

@@movingtoportlandoregon Portland today is Detroit circa 1974. Dead city walking. Get out while you can, before they find your Tesla covered in spray primer and full of garbage and jugs of pee, which is what happened to my Honda. And the city had the stones to charge ME $700 for "recovering" the destroyed husk that used to be my car.
In Boise I can rent a 3bd/2ba house for what I'm paying now for a tiny room. They have 1/10th the property crime and 1/100th the unsheltered homeless. I'm going to miss Mt. Hood and I'm going to miss my family. But I'm not going to let this place abuse me anymore.

The pandemic was a huge contributing factor, I'm confident this issue will be addressed as businesses come back to downtown and areas are revitalized.
