    Watch of the Week: In this series I present you every week a new wristwatch which caught my attention in about four minutes. A brief watch review with basic specifications and a short description about the specialities of the timepiece.

    I once was told - no idea where the story comes from - that the austere Roman numerals represent the chores of the workday, wheras the fun is during those sleek Arabic numbered hours. Have a good time Tim.

      That actually makes a lot of sense! Maybe there's other theories around how the California dial came to be but I'm sticking to this one! Thanks for sharing

    "In recent years Timex has moved upmarket from Budget to Affordable" has been my tongue-in-cheek jest recently.

    I like California dials THIS much. I can't rationally explain this, they just scratch an itch, and these are fantastic. Most of the Timex autos have been pretty meh, but I absolutely love these two, very well done.

    • @caomhan84

      This one's good, it's very very good. It's a stunner in person. I just wish the movement wasn't so noisy.

    I bought one of these. The dial is stunning in person. It has a subtle sunburst effect, and what doesn't come across in the pictures is the slight rose colored tint. So it's sort of a pinkish champagne dial. The markers are shiny black. Obviously they're not enamel, but they have that look. Even the Timex lettering seems raised off the dial. The only thing that looks printed is the automatic text and the railroad minute track.
    It's light on the wrist, but I like that. It's simply a scaled up version of the 34 mm Marlin. The strap they supply is also very good. It seems like thick shoe leather. It's soft and comfortable. The only thing I don't like is the loud movement. I don't dislike the Miyota 8200 itself, but in this watch it's louder than others that I've had. I'm sure many people would say it "feels cheap," But the loudness and the rattle of the movement is literally the only thing that I can criticize about it. Everything else, from the lightness of the steel case to the domed acrylic crystal I actually like a lot.

    It’s a shame the automatic marlins are all so large

    • @tonyrome655
      @tonyrome655 3 роки тому +3

      Yes, 36-38mm would be perfect in this style (for me). 40mm in a dress watch wears even larger. I guess Timex is just trying to stay current.

    • @flatfeat
      @flatfeat 3 роки тому

      Agree. The Japanese versions were 34 mm, I think, but they're quartz.

    • @caomhan84
      @caomhan84 3 роки тому +2

      I actually thought this too, but wearing it on the wrist it's actually smaller than some 39 mm watches I have. I think it's all down to the case design. It fits like a 38 mm watch. And I have a very small wrist, so I gravitate more toward the 38 mm side of things. I was very pleased when I put this on that it wasn't too large. That said, since the handset seems a bit short, I think they started out wanting to make these automatic Marlins in a 38 mm case and then change their mind halfway through.

    Usually I don't like California dials, but Timex had a great go at it - these two look gorgeous. Miyotas are very reliable, so also movement wise there's nothing to complain about - in that price range, it's either that or Seiko NH35 (or SeaGull, as Timex has already done in the past).

    • @StuntpilootStef
      @StuntpilootStef 3 роки тому

      I bet it's a Miyota 8000 series movement. It doesn't look like an NH35.

    • @lucafwn
      @lucafwn 3 роки тому

      @UCVjxs0ZTpD1Pi02T_2hujQg yes, my point was that at that price range you don't have a great choice of movements, so a Miyota is perfectly fine. According to several reviews, Timex uses a Miyota 8215 on their usual Marlin Automatic series (apart from the day/date models), and a SeaGull ST6 without the automatic module for their 34mm hand wound model.

    Hi Tim,
    I have a Glycine with a California dial. It's one of my pieces that never fails to receive complements. I've heard that the dial was a type of experiment to see if it would help orient 12 on the dial.

    SOOO happy you choose that watch. Im crazy interessted in this watch cause it hits my "Film Noir/Dashiel Hammet/LA Confidential/Hollywood Golden age/Phillip Marlowe" Scenario I have going in my head. Dont even ask me why, its not even aestheticly from that era, but it somehow does. ALSO it is nice to buy an american watch with a California dial (it fits, doesnt it?).

    They were not Arabic numerals. If it’s a Caledonia brand, then have it on the dial, think the watch needed to be aged, add patina to the dial, think it’s too thick, Timex tend use the same production run with exposed insides, quick release straps and raised acrylic crystals.
