“I know the world is filled with troubles and many injustices. But reality is as beautiful as it is ugly. I think it is just as important to sing about beautiful mornings as it is to talk about slums. I just couldn't write anything without hope in it.” - Oscar Hammerstein Let’s face it, we’ve had many story-telling geniuses over the centuries, but very few understand the value of wholesome entertainment as well as they did. That all-important feeling of hope we all need in our lives. All I really want to say is, thank you Rogers and Hammerstein, for proving how great both the big and little things in life can be.
This song just popped into my head this morning , so I googled and found it here. Breathtakingly lovely !Dick Haymes was one on the most loved singers among musicians , known for his perfect pitch , beautiful tones and easygoing manner . Vivian Blaine was the big eyed beauty , with a huge! range of talent , always superb ! I was fortunate to have spent an evening at a party with Vivian , my heart was on a cloud! Such a masterpiece of a musical from the Richard and Oscar ! Why can't Broadway create anything similar to these old gems? The crap nowadays is such a waste of money!
This song also popped into my head out of nowhere. Had not heard it in decades. So it was not one of those brain worms we get from hearing a song yesterday and it replaying over & over in our head for one or two days (or more).
Wow! Awake at 3:30 in the morning and it just popped into my head too! I remember singing it at a beautiful night concert at Camp Canandaigua as a teenager decades ago. Very fond memories. Indeed. The good ole days they were.
This movie is just beautiful, in every aspect. The people, the music and sets, they all reminisce of a beautiful time long past. I think I am falling in love with Rodgers and Hammerstein...
One of the best movie musicals of all time! An excellent escape from everyday stress and trials! Timeless! And the best song from the musical! Very romantic and enchanting! A time trip back to the 1940s: exciting motion pictures and movie events at local movie houses, entertaining cartoons (Looney Toons/Warner Bros., Terry Toons, Disney, etc), radio shows, live bands with swinging and dancing at local clubs, diners with jukeboxes, window shopping with displays (outdoor and indoor), luxury train travel, etc.!
I really like the old musical movies. Its very gentle voices when they singing every words they song its very attractive for me hahah xD... But im just 21 years old and im proudly to say that i love that kind of songs .... Hhahah xD ^_^ wishing someone sing that to me hahah xD.
This is giving me powerful shivers of delight. I was seven or newly eight years old, sitting with my parents and brother in a big cinema (long gone) in Glasgow, Scotland, when State Fair was the latest must-see. The screen was huge, the colours vivid, and the sound amazing. I can remember swaying to this song. And what a song it is! Of course I fell thud for Pat Boone LOL. Young as I was, I thought him just gorgeous! And I sang the State Fair theme tune all the way home. Thank you.
It's a grand night for singing, The moon is flying high, And somewhere a bird Who is bound he'll be heard Is throwing his heart at the sky! It's a grand night for singing, The stars are bright above. The earth is a-glow And to add to the show, I think I am falling in love! Falling, falling in love. It's a grand night for singing, The moon is flying high, And somewhere a bird Who is bound he'll be heard, Is throwing his heart at the sky! Maybe it's more than the moon, Maybe it's more than the birds, Maybe it's more than sight of the night, In a light too lovely for words. Maybe it's more than the earth Shiny in silvery blue. 34 yrs. ago discovered this on the after school 4pm movie channel... a time when youth was protected by telecasts etc. And how much fun was it telling the parent and to hear their recollections....
My grandkids 7 and 9 absolutely love old musicals with " anchors away " being their favourite. They also know most of the Studio Ghibli music scores by heart. I think it depends on the grown-ups to teach their children about past music. This particular song from Statefair is on my playlist and when I am walking and think I'm alone I dance to it LOL !
I love this movie I just watched it a few nights ago. I like this one 100 zillion times better than the remake. It's really rare when a remake is good though. I had this song in my mind and had to look it up. Thanks!
Classic Rogers and Hammerstein waltz, in 3 strip Techicolor, with Dick Haymes and Dana Andrews (who knew he could sing!). It was produced in the closing years of WWII and shown to war weary troops to remind them of what they were fighting for. Goebbles gave the Germans "Kohlberg" (dying for the Fatherland), Hollywood gave Americans "State Fair" (fighting and living for a way of life.)
When Dick Haymes was in London, Ontario Canada he came into the bank where I worked. We were all in awe and as a teller I got to help him! This was about 65 years ago!
Vivian Blaine is the redhead dancing with Dick Haynes. She had an excellent voice but is best remembered for portraying the original “Hot Box Chick-Chick-Chickedee, Miss Adelaide”. SHE WAS EXCELLENT in the Broadway and film versions of GUYS AND DOLLS. “It says here . . . “
Fun fact: This is the only time the character of Pat sings in the entire film. The studio was unaware that Dana Andrews was a trained singer, so they hired a professional named Ben Gage - who was later married to Esther Williams - to dub his singing. Andrews did not reveal the truth, because he figured that Gage needed the work.
Dana Andrews was amused when he found that his voice was to be dubbed for his brief singing sequence; he was an operatically trained singer. He laughing said that the other guy probably needed the job.
In Bluewater theatre company we sing this song every play practice and the very first play at Bluewater was a grand night for singing Also every ten years we preform a grand night for singing
I remember dancing to this song to another thing I remember people dressing up like this but I did always even go to a fair or carnival whatever you always dressed up which I think was very classy today all these jeans and jeans that's not class you look like old Farmers today wish I could bring back yesterday when people were classy the music was classy and I miss it I guess maybe a whole that's why I think this way but I do believe in it hey buddy have a great day and God bless you
Classic musicals like this are one of the best things on earth. People think this stuff is just for older people, but as a 13 year old, this kinda makes me who I am
Today I heard a lot of marvelous singers/dancers at University of Kentucky's Grand Night for Singing performance by their Music Department. Musical theater is alive and well with tremendous up and coming performers.
As the saying goes "they don't make them like that any more"! I love all those old musicals. The melodies are catchy and even people who can''t sing can have a good try at them. The lyrics in some of them are very clever too. The modern musicals are excellent: Phantom, Cats, Les Mis but they're "singer" songs for trained voices.
So weird lookin at those youngster swingin their hand in the carnaval ride while look in each other eyes, and also hugging his girlfriend in that tiny boat. I really fell in love with that scene While nowadays teenagers movie usually is all about "oh i must lost my virginity before college! "
Although he was a trained opera singer, Dana Andrews' voice was dubbed. Andrews didn't tell the studio because he didn't want to be typecast and he the knew singer hired to be his singing voice needed the job.
@Hortonfan123 Its not weird because I'm 17 an I got the love of musicals from my dad but Ive loved musical for forever. I even go with my dad to see the theatre production of musicals.
I grew up watching the Rogers and Hammerstein collection from Sound of Music to the King and I watched them all several times, have to say this movie one of my favorites. and really like this song. next girlfriend i get will get the uncomfortable pleasure of hearing me try to sing this song lol
It's a grand night for singing, The moon is flying high, And somewhere a bird Who is bound he'll be heard Is throwing his heart at the sky! It's a grand night for singing, The stars are bright above. The kids take singing lessons of the days popular music, there are still some that can sing like this, although most crooning masters died out in the late 50's the last true Crooner, that I can think of that was popular was Pat Boone (ironically he's in the remake of this movie) in the late 50's, but the songs he crooned in we're still hits (charted in the top 40 with crooning songs) they couldn't touch his pop/rocknroll song sales, but for the last 50 or so i could count on 1 hand new crooners
I love this song, but, sadly, it brings back a very bad memory. I was in our high school choir and we were scheduled to sing this in a concert that night in Ottawa, Ontario. It was November 22, 1963, and even though we were not Americans, we were all shocked and heartbroken that JFK had been assassinated that very day. We performed the concert, but not without tears streaming down our faces -- including that of the nun who was directing us. The juxtaposition of the uplifting lyrics and the catastrophe that had just occurred was almost too much to bear. Even 53 years later, this otherwise happy song still brings tears to my eyes.
Tommy Thomas is the actor William Marshall, his French wife was Michelle Morgan, they were the original owners of 10050 Ceilo Drive in Beverly Hills, which in 1969 was the site of the Manson Murders. Roman Polanski and Sharon Tate were renting it from the then owner. A Hollywood wheeler dealer Rudi Altobelli.
If I am in error you have my apology. However I did some research both on Haymes on IMDb which is very accurate and also on a site that lists all those that appeared on Dallas, even if it was one episode and Haymes is not listed at all. In any case he was a fine talent.
I THINK if I remember right.Dick Haymes (the guy singing to the Redhead) was on Dallas in the early 80`s.I remember my mom once joking saying "I'm surprised he doesn't break into it's a grand night for singing".....lol.

agreed -ts My FAVORITE Musical -
Every time I see this scene, it makes me think of a night you genuinely never want to end.

I was introduced to their work with Brandy as Cinderella
One of the best movie scores ever!
must watch this once a month, my favorite
You got that right!

The first time I fell in love with Rogers and Hammerstein was Cinderella starring Brandy
My nickname for them---' The Big Ampersand'.
It's just simply the best movie ever with songs that make you feel like singing
@Canuck B wow, nice anti-Semitism there. GTFOH
@@susangunts I have this movie on DVD and watch it once a year!
If you think romance is dead and gone,
Find an old jukebox full of 45's,
Pop a nickel in it and it all comes back to me.
;)
One of the best movie musicals of all time! An excellent escape from everyday stress and trials! Timeless! And the best song from the musical! Very romantic and enchanting! A time trip back to the 1940s: exciting motion pictures and movie events at local movie houses, entertaining cartoons (Looney Toons/Warner Bros., Terry Toons, Disney, etc), radio shows, live bands with swinging and dancing at local clubs, diners with jukeboxes, window shopping with displays (outdoor and indoor), luxury train travel, etc.!
Sometimes even though I’m a 1993 baby, I took a trip back in time to that era
why can't life be like this ?
I know right. Especially finding romance and having fun
Romance back in the 40s is easy and good nowadays it sucks so bad
No duh but still
State Fair is my favorite Rogers and Hammerstein musical tied with Oklahoma and Cinderella. Beautiful and romantic song
I really like the old musical movies. Its very gentle voices when they singing every words they song its very attractive for me hahah xD... But im just 21 years old and im proudly to say that i love that kind of songs .... Hhahah xD ^_^ wishing someone sing that to me hahah xD.

Of course I fell thud for Pat Boone LOL. Young as I was, I thought him just gorgeous! And I sang the State Fair theme tune all the way home. Thank you.
Perhaps the version you saw was the 1962 remake, since Boone isn't in this one.
Dick sang this song whenever he did a show and had a wonderful State Fair medley...the audience loved nostalgia...thanks for posting...
I sure wish I could have seen Dick live , you were so fortunate!
Watching this makes me wish for a time that has long since passed, and will not return
I know what you mean. I’ve been into movies made during post War America since middle school
Just love these classic movies!
This is perhaps the most euphoric song which I have ever heard!Donald Visconti
This is my favorite classic musical movie. I watch this movie every time I go down to Perry, GA. Sets the mood for me.
It's a grand night for singing,

Falling, falling in love.

Maybe it's more than the earth
Shiny in silvery blue.

Good for u. Its a great film.
I'm so glad I bought it :) part of my Rodgers & Hammerstein collection and they're some of my favorite and most watched movies
Indeed too lovely for words...
That maple syrup smooth singing voice. Dark. Deep. Satiny.
Dick Haymes is the best ever!
We sang this at chorus back in middle school
Luv it Luv it Love it!..........always a thrill to find actors who can also sing
I love this movie I just watched it a few nights ago. I like this one 100 zillion times better than the remake. It's really rare when a remake is good though. I had this song in my mind and had to look it up. Thanks!
Fantastic movie.....the oldies are great to recapture the happiness.

Dana Andrews was lip syncing, Jeanne Craine also I hope that wasn't disillusioning
When Dick Haymes was in London, Ontario Canada he came into the bank where I worked. We were all in awe and as a teller I got to help him! This was about 65 years ago!
i love all musical's thank you for sharing this .
This version came out a few months before I did. Love the plot and the music of this 1945 classic.

I’m single but not rushing
i havent heard this song in years and i still know the lyrics
Dana Andrews was amused when he found that his voice was to be dubbed for his brief singing sequence; he was an operatically trained singer. He laughing said that the other guy probably needed the job.
A beautiful song.
One of my favorite musicals...I just seen that it is out on DVD and had to buy it
Saw this in 1950 in Geelong Australia aged 11.
In Bluewater theatre company we sing this song every play practice and the very first play at Bluewater was a grand night for singing
Also every ten years we preform a grand night for singing
TCM showed this movie and I instantly fell in love with it.
I performed this in the Indianapolis Children's Choir and it was so much fun!
I was brought up on Hollywood musicals I wish there was a tv Channel showing them all
Me too because I no longer have TCM with my Spectrum subscription
THIS IS A MOVIE! Not the junk these days…
I think this movie is a great movie 😇
I think it is great too. Perhaps one of my favorite movies from the 40's.
A slice of cinematic heaven!
i've done watching it rightnow ...... oh my...all this time ,i never knew the lovely story of it....
I adore old movies
I remember dancing to this song to another thing I remember people dressing up like this but I did always even go to a fair or carnival whatever you always dressed up which I think was very classy today all these jeans and jeans that's not class you look like old Farmers today wish I could bring back yesterday when people were classy the music was classy and I miss it I guess maybe a whole that's why I think this way but I do believe in it hey buddy have a great day and God bless you
Classic musicals like this are one of the best things on earth. People think this stuff is just for older people, but as a 13 year old, this kinda makes me who I am
Leon Shamroy's lush three-strip technicolor cinematography defies description.
Such a beautiful song! So many memories with it, I'll never forget my time as Margy Frake... :)
Great Movies of older times!
Rodgers&Hammerstein's first try in Hollywood ca 1944, following B'Way's Oklahoma in '43.
You mean 45
This is the musical for my school this year
There is no substitute for pure genius. R&H rule the Broadway musical world.
Today I heard a lot of marvelous singers/dancers at University of Kentucky's Grand Night for Singing performance by their Music Department. Musical theater is alive and well with tremendous up and coming performers.
We used to sing this song in Girl's Glee in school, but I didn't know it was from State Fair Great song

William Marshall sings at the bandstand, with Tommy Thomas conducting.
Although he was a trained opera singer, Dana Andrews' voice was dubbed. Andrews didn't tell the studio because he didn't want to be typecast and he the knew singer hired to be his singing voice needed the job.
@Hortonfan123
Its not weird because I'm 17 an I got the love of musicals from my dad but Ive loved musical for forever. I even go with my dad to see the theatre production of musicals.
I wasn't talking about Howard Keel,I was talking about Dick Haymes who WAS on Dallas shortly before he passed away.
To think they could produce this oh so intimate splendour such a long time ago.
thanks a good movie
My fav R and H musical!
@lovecats778 Just saw the movie couple days ago and i too fell in love with it. also, vivian blaine and jeane crain are beautiful!
Somebody tell me where this place is, I want to go there.
10201 West Pico Boulevard, Los Angeles, California 90064
My late husbands favourie song and film thank you
@violinhudi I second that. That is why I call Rodgers and Hammerstein 'The Big Ampersand'.
very good movie
Dana Andrews at 3:04! I think this is the only time he sings in any of his movies.
Storylines were so simple and uncomplicated then, movies light and enjoyable
I grew up watching the Rogers and Hammerstein collection from Sound of Music to the King and I watched them all several times, have to say this movie one of my favorites. and really like this song. next girlfriend i get will get the uncomfortable pleasure of hearing me try to sing this song lol
I love this song so much
Lovely song so catchy :) x
as the guy who played harry in this play, this song makes me so sad yet melancholy
It's a grand night for singing,
The moon is flying high,
And somewhere a bird

Is throwing his heart at the sky!
It's a grand night for singing,

Falling, falling in love.

I sang this in my high school chorus - Abington HIgh, Abington Pa....probably was in t961 or '62......anyone know of it or attended?
I love this song, but, sadly, it brings back a very bad memory. I was in our high school choir and we were scheduled to sing this in a concert that night in Ottawa, Ontario. They still exist, they just aren't on Top 40 (which they should be). Broadway isn't dead. (this is coming from a 15 year old).
The days when people actually cared about their appearance when they went out in public. Those days are gone.
Aye, we never looked so ggod after the '40's
Agreed. People dress too casually now. No class. And they text. Awful.
I have to sing this song in an audition!Ahh!
Wow, in ancient times when people wore clothes. I like it!
The fine singer who was on Dallas was Howard Keel. By then Haymes had passed away.
such a wonderful and cute Song :):):)
I THINK if I remember right.Dick Haymes (the guy singing to the Redhead) was on Dallas in the early 80`s.I remember my mom once joking saying "I'm surprised he doesn't break into it's a grand night for singing".....lol.
you're on crack
Rock 'n' roll happened to music like this.
I love both this version and the 1962 version
Afraid the 1962 film flopped Pat Boone was so handsome though, & what a voice
@TheSinger760 Harry Connick, Jr. sings like this.
What ever happened to people who can actually sing like this? Where did they go? They have been invaded by people like Miley and Kesha
Broadway
NO!
"actually"
There are people out there that still sing like this they're just not heard of because in today's music industry the media keeps the attention on pop icon singers like Miley and Beiber, leaving out the ones who can actually sing. I'm one of the few who has a voice like this and it's very hard to get into the industry besides theater because of this new trend that throws out people who can actually sing without the help of a computer altering it.
Agreed!
I'm learning this :3
So "corny" and yet so very beautiful!
@craftivity225: me too! I did on Friday for my school play!
Look, it's not that the new singers are terrible, but that society's views on singing has changed. If we (as a society) still liked this singing, I guarantee more singers like this would be here.
