    Peter Lorre also played the serial killer in Fritz Lang's film, M (1931) wich is probably why is considered a "creep"

      It just had to be another Fritz

      And when he came to America they made him do a creepy movie called Mad Love before he could make Crime and Punishment.

    I honestly never knew a single thing about this character. He was always the "Yes my master" guy and nothing else. That is insane to think about. It almost feels like some crazy lost in translation scenario but I guess general audiences aren't looking all the way back at the original movies. I had never seen the original Frankenstein movies, and honestly I would have told you Igor was a character in them. This was a very informative video. Well done!

      I have seen them and Igor is a character in two of them. Son of Frankinstein and Ghost of Frankinstein.

    Another thing that also confused me as a kid was the difference between Igor and Renfield. In the cartoon Mina and the Count, Dracula actually has a Lorry-esque hunchbacked assistant named Igor.

    I like the idea of Igor being an archetype.

      So did Sir Terry Pratchett. RIP & GNU PTerry. If you have never previously read one of his discworld novels you're in for the treat of a lifetime.

    Very well-researched piece! In-depth, and insightful. For years I have idly wondered about this phenomenon, knew of several of the pieces you brought together, but did not know about several more. Thank you for doing this research, and putting this together! Very informative!
    However, I do take issue with one statement you made:
    10:29 - "This Igor claims to be the son of the original Igor"
    in the film "Young Frankenstein," Marty Feldman's character said, "My grandfather used to work for your grandfather." He never claimed that his grandfather's name was Igor. He could have been talking about his "Grandpa Fritz," the hunchbacked man who helped Victor Frankenstein with his experiments. Frederick is not Victor, though he ended up, as Inspector Kemp said, "vallowinginhisgrandfaddersfootstomps." Igor was following in his grandfather's footsteps as well, but never claimed to be his name-sake! That was yet another popular assumption that audiences made.
    I also find it interesting how strongly Peter Lorre is tied to the character. The original Fritz / Renfield, played by Dwight Frye: he had some wild, wide-open eye expressions, but his eyes themselves were not noteworthy. Peter Lorre's eyes were large, sad, heavy-lidded, very easy to caricature. (His voice was also unique and distinct, very easy to imitate.) Then came Marty Feldman, with his thyroid-induced pop eyes. Taken all together in the blender of pop culture, you get a lab assistant with a hunchback like Dwight Frye's Fritz, with a raspy, lisping voice like Peter Lorre, and a bulging, cock-eyed look like Marty Feldman.
    Shining reference at the end: beauty. "You've always been Igor."

    Could the hunchback archetype in House of Frankenstein be a nod back to 1923’s _The Hunchback of Notre Dame,_ I wonder? That was a Universal film starring Lon Chaney, Sr., and would have been only 21 years old at the time.

    • @Matt_Presents
      @Matt_Presents  11 місяців тому +3

      I think mostly it was a nod to Fritz and characters like him, but I'm sure that was also something that made people associate Hunchbacks and these types of movies.

    Lorre wasn't German, though he started his career in Germany. He was Hungarian/Austrian. And while he was never Dr. Frankenstein, he did play a psycho doctor in "Mad Love," which is probably the inspiration for that "Looney Tunes" character.

    Thank you for this retrospective! I have always been puzzled by the origins of Igor and it was fascinating by how he is an amalgamation of influences who was basically a Mandela Effect.

      Bullshit. He was a character played by Bela Lugosi. The partleft such a huge impact thatits lived on down the ages. Nothing to do with a mendella effect. Everything to do with sloppy research.

    Of course Igor existed. He was played by Bela Lugosi in Son of Feankinstein and Ghost of Frankinstein. The role made a huge cultural impact and thats why its remembered down the years. This video is dumb.

    • @Matt_Presents
      @Matt_Presents  Рік тому +6

      The Ygor Bela Lagosi plays is nothing like the Igor typically depicted, who's more akin to Frankenstein's Fritz. I don't deny Lagosi's character was impactful, I say as much in the video. You either didn't actually watch the video or you just blatantly ignored me to leave a negative comment.

    I mean, sure Universal put Igor in the lunchbox but more to the point they put Igor in their attempt to relaunch the universal monsterverse with Van Helsing. Cuz like, it may have been takes in their own version of the material but dammit everybody would be asking where's Igor?

    The poster of this video has very little understanding or respect for the original universal Horror cycle. They were great movies and left a huge cultural impact. Igor was in two of these movies so its no surprise that like dracula Frankinsteins Monster he has become famous.

      The poster of this comment has very little understanding or respect for the video I made, in which I directly address the two movies Ygor appears in (note: commenter criticizing my lack of knowledge on the subject misspelled that name) and their impact on people's understanding of the character.
      Maybe watch the whole video before leaving a comment like this.

    Uh, there is way more than 10 Jason movies.

    • @Matt_Presents
      @Matt_Presents  Рік тому +2

      There's 12 Friday the 13th movies if you count Jason vs. Freddy and the remake (although the original Friday the 13th is famously not about Jason)
      10 movies in the main series, though.
