      I've done missions to Laythe but I usually end up landing in the ocean or I get them stuck in an elliptical orbit and have to launch a rescue.

      @@schiefer1103 At the same time, the planets are closer and will need less Delta v and it is closer, I think Scott Manley said something about if it was real life than kerbin would be at eeloo's orbit. Correct me if I'm wrong.

    Gonna be honest here, I have flown missions to every planet (except Dres) and I still haven't taken the time to build a half decent LKO SSTO. I've managed a couple, but I basically go "how many fuel tanks can I lift with this engine" and build a single stage rocket that can't even return without burning up.

    Ok, you have to tell me how you learned all this stuff. I admit, I am still quite a noob at KSP, I get the basics, been to jools moons been to duna, but my rockets are waaaay too big, cause massive lag and such. I dont use gravity assists at all, but want to learn to, so pleeeeease, tell me where you learned to do this. :) :)

    • @turbopumped6490
      @turbopumped6490  8 років тому +9

      Unfortunately I didnt find any easy to understand explanation anywhere, so I basically had to fool around with the maneuver nodes and find out for my self ... I learned 3 important things :
      1 : unlike a normal encounter you need to be at an angle to the planet/moon you need a gravity asisst from.
      2 : If you want a speed increase, you need to pass BEHIND the planet - and if you want to decrease your speed pass in FRONT of the planet .
      3 : The Jool system with its many heavy moons is an exellent place to learn gravity assists .

    Very nice video but isn't it more efficient to get out of jool's SOI by burning retrograde when exiting Laythe, getting a very low jool's periapsis and then burning prograde there rather than doing a slingshot with Tylo ? I remember seeing a Scott Manley video on that.

    I noticed two important things.
    1. You seem to use that RAPIER-slung-under-a-NERVA design a lot. Is there a reason for that?
    2. Hilbella took off her helmet on EVA _before_ doing an atmospheric analysis. Shouldn't she have done that in the other order?

    • @turbopumped6490
      @turbopumped6490  8 років тому +1

      1. Its the best way to make a single rapier/nuke combo and gives great TWR in nuclear mode which removes the need for oxidizer. It means a small ship with great range, but balancing the asymetric thrust is difficult though .
      2. Kerbals acts first and thinks later.

    I'm curious as to whether you've tried using the new Mk1 cockpits instead of the capsules. They definitely look nicer, and might have better supersonic aerodynamics.

      @Tankigamer200 8 років тому

      But weigh a fuckton more. The mk1 cockpit weighs in at 1.5 tons i thnk and the mk1 capsule at 0.95 although i dont know exactly how much but capsules are lighter

    That wouldn't work on 1.0.5... the retry would turn everything into charcoal as the heat is going on the wrong angle. (Maybe I am doing something wrong).

      last half of the mission was done in 1.05 - pay close attention to the fuel tanks in the latter part of the game, you will see they have changed to 1.05 style tanks .

    Awesome! If that was in career mode on normal difficulty you must do nothing but play KSP. I'm so envious. Perhaps I should try the sandbox mode. Career mode is taking way too long, I'll be 90 years old before I do anything like that. Besides my copy doesn't update so I have to start all over again with every update I'm to OCD to play any other way than in career mode on normal difficulty. Still running 1.0.4 Now I'm pissed every time an update comes out. 1.0.5 can wait. Anyone know how to update outside of the launcher and without just downloading a fresh copy of the new version?
    This restarting with every update is getting a little old. But I digress. Awesome job and video, Turbo Pumped!

      +tstatech 1-get the 1.05 = install it in new dir
      2-copy 1.05 into existing 1.04 directory
      3 add more boosters :)

    how is this possible without burning up ? Same goes for your mission to Minmus - having watched quite a few youtube videos, I decided to try aerobraking in Jool's atmosphere, then landing on Laythe with no heat shields, then returning to Kerbin with no heatshields... it ALWAYS ends in almost instant explosion, no matter how gently I enter. Has re-entry been significantly redone in some later version? (I'm talking about 1.5)

    • @turbopumped6490
      @turbopumped6490  5 років тому +1

      Yes re-entry on kerbin is slightly worse now, re-entry on jool is WAY more dangerous. Have not tried laythe lately but i guess its the same story there.

    • @igorbednarski8048
      @igorbednarski8048 5 років тому +1

      @@turbopumped6490 well I've learned my lesson now and I don't dare venture anywhere near an atmosphere without heatshields (unless it's Duna). In fact even heatshields don't guarantee survival, you can still burn if your deacent is too steep - I tried landing on Kerbin by zeroeing my orbital velocity and landing straight down at a 90 degree angle and it didn't end well.
      I also tried aerocapture in Eve's atmosphere and if i aimed too low, It would burn through the heatshields, if I aimed too high I would eventually run out of ablator...

      Laythe is in the system of the sun, it's a moon of Jool, and Jool is Jupiter in game.
