    Another fantastic video! I still can't fully figure out why you used a docking port on the front of the craft, though. Does it provide a lot less drag/ weighs less than a conventional intake or nosecone?
    Also, I've recently been inspired by your content and am finishing up a mission to Eeloo and back using a 3.5 ton rocket that uses a very similar ion system!

    • @turbopumped6490
      @turbopumped6490  8 років тому +62

      The docking port actually have a bit more drag and weight than a nosecone, but its heat tolerance is much greater - i can fly up to 1650 m/s without exploding because of it .
      Cant wait to see that Eelo rocket - 3, 5 ton is incredible !

    • @turbopumped6490
      @turbopumped6490  8 років тому +30

      For the mission itself - not that many.
      But a ton of "revert to launch" , this thing is nearly impossible to to get into orbit thanks to a hair thin fuel margin.
      I really wanted the weight to not exceed 4.5 tons :)

    That is one tiny SSTO! You've got some amazing piloting skills as well
    One question: Why did you use the Shielded docking port as a nose-cone? Wouldn't a different nose-cone, like the Aerodynamic Nose Cone or even the Ramp intake, be less massive and produce less drag?

    • @origamiscienceguy6658
      @origamiscienceguy6658 8 років тому

      +Stratzenblitz75 Shielded docking port has higher temperature tolerance which means more speed in air-breathing mode.

    • @turbopumped6490
      @turbopumped6490  8 років тому

      The shielded docking port can take a lot more heat - I can fly at more than 1600 m/s in airbreathing mode without exploding with it.

    • @Stratzenblitz75
      @Stratzenblitz75 8 років тому

      +Turbo Pumped Checking the Wiki, it appears the shielded docking port has a heat tolerance of 2400 K. However, the other nose cones I mentioned, the Aerodynamic Nose Cone and the Ramp intake, also have a heat tolerance of 2400 K. So shouldn't they perform just as well? Or is there something else to the stock-heating system that I'm missing?

      I only use it as a heat shield , it can fly 2-300 m/s faster without exploding compared to a regular nose cone .

    but why the small nosecone sticking out of the rapier? does drag apply at the back of the ship as well?

    • @turbopumped6490
      @turbopumped6490  8 років тому

      The rapier have a node which creates less drag if you attatch a nose cone to it

    • @ha15224
      @ha15224 8 років тому

      Turbo Pumped and it doesn't overheat the cone? surprising.

    • @handofcreation0
      @handofcreation0 8 років тому

      +Gyeongrok HA You do have to offset the nosecone to be inside the RAPIER, otherwise it will overheat the nosecone when the gimbals turn the nozzles. But in the end it still applies the drag reduction, whether or not you have them hidden halfway inside your engines.

    • @ha15224
      @ha15224 8 років тому

      handofcreation0 ah so that's why it didn't overheat

    Too bad in 1.1.3 the wheels would explode at that speed. I gotta try it though, I made a 16 ton SSTO that does the same thing as yours, but with 2 kerbals. However is much more conventional: 1 rapier and 1 Nerv, gets there and back quick.
    image.prntscr.com/image/cd262e852786464c96b1ae49dc148fe3.png
    I tried to build something similar in 1.1.3, sadly there seem to be 2 problems: the 1.25 service bay doesn't protect the kerbal against heating effects - might be a bug or a feature, since the mk2 cargobay does protect. Two, the engines are less efficient, is impossible to beat 4.5 tons. Closest I came was 5.5 tons, I can reach an Apo of 75km, but I can't circularize on ion engine alone.
    Oh and the wheels don't explode, at least not on take off.

    Pro tip:
    You could simply attach ionizer back of the rapier with the same aerodynamic result and still save 10kgs.
    I never seen a youtuber doing that before but I do it even with nervas.
