- I have always wondered how well a space plane works as a rover.
Turns out it works really well .

You know, even when I think I'm good at a game, People like Turbo Pumped make me look like a huge fucking noob.
"You're running out of runway!"
definitely the most kerbal thing Ever said in the history of ksp
"running"
*Fails at 5 trillionth attempt at orbiting*
*Sees this in recommended*
*Watches it*
*Dies internally*
That interesting use of a hill to reach orbit made me recall Douglas' Adams "Hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy" - "Flying is easy, just throw yourself on the ground and miss".
That is actually correct scientists usually describes orbiting is falling but missing the object
Unsuccessful yeet
Damn your F5 and F9 key must be worn down to a nub.
Ill give you 10 keyboards to wear out and accomplish a 10th of all this!
not if its a mecha keyboard
i hate people who say mecha keyboards dont wear out because they DO like everything else in the world
he means the actual plastic key and not the switch
Hey i hate them to to many leds and it looks like a chrismes tree i just said it i have plastic keys and rubber caps
+Ausintune
Mechanical keyboards aren't gonna wear out in a normal person's lifetime.
"how you going to slow down from orbit?"
"Using the breaks."
"You mean lithobraking?"
"Yeah."
"From orbit?"
"Yep. Then drive to the South Pole."
I have no words.
Good catch thanks.
Jesus. You make Scott Manley look like a intern. Amazing video, as always.
Lelelelel
+Ham Sandwich lelelelel m9
+The_FPS_Melon have you seen scott do the orange efficiency challenge? it gave me a new respect for his piloting skills lol
Look up for Matt Lowne and ShadowZone. Both are the best IMO.
Sekeletu Good idea to say that on turbo's video
this is not a ksp video. this is art.
+Supersloth KSP = Art.
When you hear a buzzer, If you hear a buzzer, Stare at the art. TICK TICK
agreed
Rayman music
Another fantastic video! I still can't fully figure out why you used a docking port on the front of the craft, though. Does it provide a lot less drag/ weighs less than a conventional intake or nosecone?
Also, I've recently been inspired by your content and am finishing up a mission to Eeloo and back using a 3.5 ton rocket that uses a very similar ion system!
The docking port actually have a bit more drag and weight than a nosecone, but its heat tolerance is much greater - i can fly up to 1650 m/s without exploding because of it .
Cant wait to see that Eelo rocket - 3, 5 ton is incredible !
Ahh, that makes a lot of sense - clever out-of-the-box use of the part! The video is all planed, I know it's possible and music is ready! Now I just have to wait for my visual mods to update to 1.1 :P
Wow you two should definitely do a collab at some point. That would be so epic. Great video by the way
you should have used the docking ports open shield as an airbreak. ;)
+Turbo Pumped try using fairing nosecones similar heat tolerance different drag
I don't think I'll ever understand how you can tolerate being so perilously close to those mountains
OK this is officially the first time I have seen anyone mention the oberth effect in conjunction with hills :D
Once again, thoroughly enjoyable, please do continue! :)
+petti78 It affects everything you'd want to do outside of plane changes. That includes basic orbital maneuvers, ascent and decent from planetary bodies, or accelerating/decelerating on a hill in a vehicle.
petti78 that's why the newer cruise controls speed up a bit when is a hill ahead
Do it again on 1.1
I wanna see how you'll use the suspension in your favor :P
You and Matt Lowne should have an SSTO competition :P
Fancy seeing you here!
+Adam Harrison
Shhhhhhhh :P
+TheBeardyPenguin
KKW2 will be interesting because pretty much everything will be an SSTO.
I can't wait for KKW2, the planets are the bases right?
+Adam Harrison
Yupperz :)
I felt like I was on an adventure. Space adventure with crazy scientist.
+Wojtek Kiraga And crazy music.
doggonemess And crazy maneuvers.
what you're decribing here is basically dr who
Then there's me, struggling to do the same with a rocket 10x bigger :/
+Tris maybe too big?
It was just a rough comparison, what I was saying is that with a ship with a lot more potential energy I still struggle to do what this guy did :D
I know i have this same problem :D but this guy is just amaizing
+Tris Bigger and more complex doesn't means more efficient. Trust me, we all tried big things just to reach orbit but big things tend to be less efficient by all ways.
i made a super SUPER low tech minius and back rocket with a few parts.
its all about DETERMINATION
but while i was in ren entry all the science equipment blew up ;-; rip 30,000 in game cash
*gets to orbit, and minmus, using a 4.5 ton craft.*
*Cannot distinguish a barrel roll from a aileron roll*
but awesome video tho!
Pilot here, no one actually calls them aileron roles except in ToF
I just love the sync between the music and moments. Very well done! I absolutely love your content due to how impissible it seems.
That has got to be the most bad-ass thing I've seen since ..... I can't remember when.
One question: How many quicksave reloads?
For the mission itself - not that many.
But a ton of "revert to launch" , this thing is nearly impossible to to get into orbit thanks to a hair thin fuel margin.
I really wanted the weight to not exceed 4.5 tons :)
+Turbo Pumped I really love you videos, but could you try involving TAC live support when you do challenges like this? ;) Keep up the good work!
What version of KSP are you using? Reentering like that now will blow you to hell and back in 3 seconds...
1.05 , normal settings. This craft is so small and light that reentry never became a problem , the front mounted shielded docking port also helps a lot.
+Turbo Pumped Huh, okay. Thanks for the reply. By the way, you're a legend and an inspiration. Keep at it!
+Turbo Pumped I guess that's the square-cube law. Half the size would be ideally 1/8 the reentry heat, but 1/4 the area to radiate it.
Holy fuck. I... I....
Excuse me as I pick up my jaw from the floor.
+HolidayTheLeek Same, I lost my jaw.
+Enceos i cant find mine
can/will you upload a failure compilation?
Failures? What failures?
+TheNerd484 Where we're going and coming back we don't have failures.
There's no failiures, only Sstos
You're really pushing the limits, keep it up!
I cant even get into orbit
+SgtJack BR (xXSgtJackXx) Check out Scott Manley's KSP tutorials. They are a bit dated but still useful for orbital mechanics and the like.
Charles Cramer Oh! thanks!
That kept me on the edge of my seat! I can't wait until I get KSP after finals are over. Are you using any mods?
Glad you liked it, and no - everything is stock .
That was an aileron roll, not a barrel roll!
+Keiya Bachhuber true, but this is more known (even though mistaken) ... so it's good to use this term here IMO
6.08 "its very front heavy"
How?
The only heavy part i can Spot is the Rapier in the back and the only Wings are totally at the front
With such a Design i actually Wondered how it can even fly straight without a flat Spin
I dont know - a bug maybe ?
center of gravity gets really screwed up on planes less than 6-7 tons .
all jet engines have their center of mass far infront of them ,Thats probably the cause .
+Turbo Pumped
What are you actually doing right now?
You haven't posted anything for months
Still thanks for responding
Because of engines, they put the mass so far forward. To try it out, go into vab, use a tiny probe, and put a rapier on it, see how the mass is forward
Small glitch. The Rapier engines com is to far forward to be physically possible
I like how this somehow manages to have the drive be sufficiently in line with the center of mass while still looking incredibly unbalanced.
Kudos for being a better spacecraft designer than 99% of all the concept artists in the video game industry.
OMG Right at the runway. Incredible.
You can definitely call yourself the god of SSTOs....
+Luke-Antra him or matt lowe
The sarcastic lemon Most certinaly.
Macy Dean was pretty good in his time
"We heard you like efficient convertibles, so we made you a car, but it's also a plane, and most importantly a spaceship."
"But, but, I don't have my driver's license. :
EVERYONE STOP USING THE RAYMAN LEGENDS SOUNDTRACK RIGHT NOW
*TRIGGERED*
Amazing!!!
Thanks :)
+Turbo Pumped you are amazing!!!
I know you credited the songs on you description, but I can't find the last song in the rayman playlists on yt. Could you name that song, it fits so awesomely in you vid
grannies world tour
Theres tons of it on youtube , maybe you spelled grannies wrong ?
No no, I didn't know the title, I just went through almost all playlists. Only played the first rayman about a decade ago. Thanks!
please do more :D
Wow! Great videos! Entertaining even without a voiceover. Watched all of them in one go! You're definetly going in the right direction :) Just baffled over the fact that you haven't got more subscribers! But time will come :) Good job! Keep on going!
That is one tiny SSTO! You've got some amazing piloting skills as well
One question: Why did you use the Shielded docking port as a nose-cone? Wouldn't a different nose-cone, like the Aerodynamic Nose Cone or even the Ramp intake, be less massive and produce less drag?
+Stratzenblitz75 Shielded docking port has higher temperature tolerance which means more speed in air-breathing mode.
The shielded docking port can take a lot more heat - I can fly at more than 1600 m/s in airbreathing mode without exploding with it.
+Turbo Pumped Checking the Wiki, it appears the shielded docking port has a heat tolerance of 2400 K. However, the other nose cones I mentioned, the Aerodynamic Nose Cone and the Ramp intake, also have a heat tolerance of 2400 K. So shouldn't they perform just as well? Or is there something else to the stock-heating system that I'm missing?
It have 2600 tolerance , and thats makes the difference.
This is definitely my favorite ksp video. I love the rover part - great job!
Me trying to figure out what SSTO means: Oh it’s obviously a Super Speed Telescope Orphan.
What. The hell. You absolute madman. Absolute. Fucking. Madman. YOU TOUCHED DOWN ON MINMUS AT ORBITAL SPEED? AND THEN PROCEEDED TO RIDE ALL THE WAY TO THE SOUTH POLE? IN THAT TINY LITTLE THING?
This makes my space program feel expensive. Nice job,TurboPumped.
Also, Genedin Kerman (You) might just be the best pilot out there. If you ask me, Genedin deserved a victory video.
when I passed the mountains on minmus with a distance of nearly 600 meters...OH YEAH I DID IT!!!when he passed the mountains like badass... fuck
watching again in 2022, can't appreciate enough how music is synced with what's going on in the vid, very well done. the craft itself is well engineered too, kinda reminds me of my attempts at making SSTOs after I first saw this
Using the ship as a rover and getting into orbit from the ground in the flatlands are very clever.
Thanks , I was surprised by how well it worked.
HApPY APRIL FOOL,S DAY YO FOOLS! 😁 by the waay nice music! (2018)
This will always be one of my favorite ksp videos of all time, ever since it came out
That's one of the best quality videos I've ever seen
700th comment,
I love the creativity and the craft itself being able to go so far without staging or even being more than 5 tones
Also the use of music was great 👍
I had the idea of using brakes to slow down on minimus for almost a month, and you proved it was possible. Amazing video!
shit.. I think you got bored of ksp... well at least you left good videos to watch.. and watch and re-watch again..
I couldn't keep a straight face during the braking on Minmus - I couldn't stop laughing!
Floating landing gear is a little cheatsy, but still one of the most impressive things you've done. Great job.
+Harry Summers they're still connected
No, you can see that nothing is attatched to them, they've been moved backwards with the translate tool in SPH a bit too far.
What About The Eeloo SSTO In 15-30 Tons?
This is the kind of out of the box thinking that built space x - among others. Well done.
Bro..Don't you dare quit youtube on me.
For me it's not the ships that are the most amazing, and they are definitely that. It's the planning to make everything as efficient as possible that's really remarkable. I can definitely make it to Minmus and back easily, but to do it like you do it is way beyond me... remarkable. Good work!
thanks, glad you like it :)
WHERE IS OUR 10000 SUBS SPECIAL
(sryforallcaps)
Your channel is CRIMINALLY under-subscribed!
I would quite literally PAY you to make more content and do this full time.
Maybe even get someone to narrate all your witty commentary because its really really excellent humor!
Coupled with your KSP skills ( which are pretty much among the 3 best of YT) and this can grew super big.
Best of luck from Kapetan!
Which 3 are you talking about? I only used to watch Scott Manley until I found this guy lol and that was just because Scott does commentary and all that mainly but good god the content in this video doesn't even need any LOL
+IndustrialDonut Matt Lowne, Maccollo, and TurboPumped himself?
Was heating off for re-entry? Either way this is the most entertaining KSP vid I've seen in a while. Good job! :D
Thanks and heating was at 100 % .
No way I could do this. I had my eyes covered just watching the video. Covering my eyes is probably the chief cause of my disasters. :p. Well done!
Taking off via curvature of a planet...
Jesus.
Initiating victory barrel roll
*fucking xplodes
Will you do more of this series?
It's a lot of fun to watch.
+1 sub
is there like... any additional mission planned for this?
Just wondered seeing the docking port in front, is there any future plans where this is needed?
I only use it as a heat shield , it can fly 2-300 m/s faster without exploding compared to a regular nose cone .
5:16 A smile ALWAYS comes to my face seeing Minmus spin away just like that.
Damn, well done well done -- had me cracking up at the ending
but why the small nosecone sticking out of the rapier? does drag apply at the back of the ship as well?
The rapier have a node which creates less drag if you attatch a nose cone to it
Turbo Pumped and it doesn't overheat the cone? surprising.
+Gyeongrok HA You do have to offset the nosecone to be inside the RAPIER, otherwise it will overheat the nosecone when the gimbals turn the nozzles. But in the end it still applies the drag reduction, whether or not you have them hidden halfway inside your engines.
handofcreation0 ah so that's why it didn't overheat
SpaceX should hire you
Amazing
You did this while I can’t even get to orbit with messing up more things than what can go wrong
If you only had a few rockets more or a fist full of thrusters.
You should have more subs.. that vid was amazing
Will you show the construction a day?
just legendary craft
Clearly, some of the runway is redundant.
This guy is like the Quadrazid of KSP
The music is killing me
"hello yes i would like to purchase three minmus sstos"
"that'll be 100,000 dollars sir"
"oh, i thought it would be more"
Please make more videos! These are so intense!
Rayman legends!!!)
Some real crazy math took place there, for sure.
Will you be making any huge ships with 1.1 being released?
"Genedin will now attempt to land at orbital speed"
my buttcheeks were clenching so hard
It's nice to watch an edited video with ion engines... I can't stand it! too slow!! even my very inefficient rockets take forever to complete a mun/minmus mission...
Imagine how hot those wheel brakes would get
The music in these is fantastic. Suits it so well
HOW FUCK!NG HOW? HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN PLAYING KSP?(Srry For CAPS)
that was nothing short of GLORIOUS
your videos are so cool
This was utterly epic from start to finish.
Your F5 and F9 keys must be well worn.
Too bad in 1.1.3 the wheels would explode at that speed. I gotta try it though, I made a 16 ton SSTO that does the same thing as yours, but with 2 kerbals. However is much more conventional: 1 rapier and 1 Nerv, gets there and back quick.
image.prntscr.com/image/cd262e852786464c96b1ae49dc148fe3.png
I tried to build something similar in 1.1.3, sadly there seem to be 2 problems: the 1.25 service bay doesn't protect the kerbal against heating effects - might be a bug or a feature, since the mk2 cargobay does protect. Two, the engines are less efficient, is impossible to beat 4.5 tons. Closest I came was 5.5 tons, I can reach an Apo of 75km, but I can't circularize on ion engine alone.
Oh and the wheels don't explode, at least not on take off.

+Turbo Pumped You are the most amazing ksp player ive seen. If I want to learn how to plan the trips like you do (Winding up an orbit to reach the mun for a gravity assist to change the inclination), how do i proceed? Please teach us!
You are the best!
And please, a collaboration with Hazard-ish would be epic
Obligatory "that's not a barrel roll~!" Love your vacuum take-offs :D
Wow, masterwork mission! I always aim for cheap missions... but will neever reach your levels! it is 1.1.3? As im lately watching, the secret for cheap missions is "landing as in Kerbin", isnt it?
Amazing video really well put together :)
Keep up the fantastic work :)
This completely warrants subscribing. Just phenomenal!
IRL spaceflight - a pressurized comfortable interior to keep astronauts alive and comfor-
KSP - *A chair in a heat shielded box*
Next Mission - To Eeloo and back five times, only using a battery pack
It's quite a pleasure seeing someone using his brain over pure strength in KSP. Usually it's just big rockets do impressive things. You showed us size does not matter. :D
so how do you switch to rover mode? or do you just use the engines until you have enough speed.
Pro tip:
You could simply attach ionizer back of the rapier with the same aerodynamic result and still save 10kgs.
I never seen a youtuber doing that before but I do it even with nervas.
This is f**king amazing!
