- known as "Pontius Pilate's Bodyguards" the Royal Scots celebrate 350 years in this documentary made by Scottish Television in 1983.
the reason i posted it is it features my Grandad - Peter Stoddart
he is the one telling of surviving the Gretna rail disaster at Quintinshill which took place on 22nd May 1915.
My father in law was a royal Scot captured in Hong Kong Xmas day 1941 managed to survive the full torture until the end of the war 1945 but he didn’t get home until 1946 due to him needing hospitalisation to build him up
My dad, Peter Vaughan and my step-father, George Young, both from Edinburgh, served in the Royal Scots in N Africa, Italy and Palestine in WWII - I'm extremely proud of them.
My Grandfather's brother fought in the 13th Batallion Royal Scots. I tracked his movements through France with internet help. As far as I understand it he would have joined up at Edinburgh and marched all the way into England before being shipped over to France He fought at Loos in 1915 and managed to survive that battle unscathed before being posted to the Somme area in September 1916.
He went over the top on September 15th if I remember correctly at Flers-Courcelette, he was killed by a shell-burst while crossing no-mans land and his body was never found. On further research, his death might have been caused by friendly fire. I even get a bit emotional thinking about it, though he would probably never have known a thing about it. Anyway, his name is on the Theipval memorial with thousands of others.
My dad told me that the battalion suffered it's first casualties before France when a couple of soldiers stopped at a cottage to ask for water, when one of them noticed rain water in a barrell, they drank some of it and thought it was cider, it turned out to be weed killer and they both died. I wonder if anyone else connected with the regiment knows this story.
Your Granddad served in the greatest regiment in the British Army. It's an outrage that our Government felt it necessary to disband this great regiment.
No kidding
my dad served in the royal scots who just passed away on 20/08/2015...
shame we no longer have our own Scottish regiments anymore as we have now lost all its heritage
My great uncle ..Captain Lewis served in the Royal Scots in WW1.
My dad ....Royal Navy WW2
Myself .....REME ...Bosnia and Kosovo
My son.... Queens Dragoon Guards
Thanks for sharing, your grandad must have been a remarkable man.
i will always admire the cameronian scottish rifles...chose to fall of their sword and disband rather than amalgamate...marty
As the Senior Line Regiment and 1st Foot , did they conflict with the Guards Regiments for hierarchy and prestige?
No, the Foot Guards take precedence, then Line Infantry then Rifle Regiments
When I served we were in contention with the kings own Scottish borderers for The castle RHQ

The Royal Scots were not disbanded, they were amalgamated with the Kings Own Scottish Borderers to become The Royal Scots Borderers, the 1st battalion of the new Royal Regiment of Scotland.
my father was the pipe majar in burma
My wife's grandad was the Company Sergeant Major and was killed as part of the rearguard of Dunkirk in 1940 aged 36. He is buried in Le Paradis beside the 97 Norfolk Regiment soldiers that were massacred the same day after they had been captured then machine gunned by members of an SS Regiment. The Major in charge of the SS Regiment was subsequently found and hanged in 1946.
Amagumated my regiment the royal scots the royal regiment.. To form one super regiment how has no regimental pride.
The royal scots 350th celebrate best of miliatry history Jacob keppler
proves a point that a soldier has no meaning to the government. oldest regiment thrown to pages of history.
