Hi Viv! I started sewing after my mom died 5 1/2 years ago. She left me an old Viking sewing machine, two old sergers, lots of notions and clothing patterns from the 50s through the 90s, and trash bins full of fabric that had been stored in a brock in the 90s when my parent's Tuff Shed blew down in a freaky storm. My poor mom never saw that fabric again, but after she passed, I kept feeling like I needed to go pull it out of there. Imagine my surprise that barely any of it had damage. It washed up rather nicely.
To my father's delight, I took some classes from a local store owner and began making purses, bags, and table cloths out of 100% cotton that I bought from her store. I plan on using most of my mom's fabric for practice when I start to sew clothes.
I haven't sewn since my father passed away almost 2 years ago, but my goal is to start making my own clothes out of only cotton, Rayon, and linen fabrics
I love watching your videos and am always excited to see the new fabric and patterns that you use to make your beautiful clothes.
Hello hello hello Viv. In the late 60’s and 70’s I sewed most of my clothes and kids clothes. Made my Easter outfits with coordinating pillbox hats. This was all done on my grandmothers single stitch electric treadle machine. When I go to the fabric stores these days I feel sticker shock. Patterns and fabric costs much much more. I am petite and clothing just doesn’t fit right. Always needs altering. Back then I sewed out of necessity, yet, it was a labor of love. Friends would borrow my clothing or ask me if I could alter something for them. Only once did I take money for a coat that I restyled for a friends mother. As a small size I could get a lot out of a yard of cloth and I would take my basic pattern that was flattering and redesign it to meet my needs. Those patterns are all gone and it’s time to start over. I feel the urge to sew when I say “I can make that for a lot less and it will fit me better”.
Viv, I love the fashion show you put on, including the pattern Number. I haven’t quite figured out how to get what I need yet from Ebay but it’s on my todo list. I’ll keep you posted. You are a gem. Hugs PAM

I actually prefer linen/rayon blend to 100% linen. It wrinkles less and has much better drape.

Hello Viv, when my two oldest daughters got married I sewed my dresses for the occassion. When you were showing us some of your fabric choices you mentioned that you were asked 'why don't you go out and buy your dress ?'. I thought of myself and I totally understood why you preferred to sew your own. The excitement of searching for the perfect fabric to go with the perfect design leads to great satisfaction once you see the end result. You and your daughter looked amazing, as did the boys. Dress fabric I forgot I had. It is a large floral with huge leaves and palm prints. There is nothing in the margins So I have no idea where I purchased it from. I washed it and it is perfect. Doesn't wrinkle and I have nine yards!!! It is black and white and the white is luminous kind of glowing to it. This print must have a
Drape to it that does not add weight to it. Glad to hear you are sewing so many garments.

What a sweetheart you are. Old Zig is still with us, doing well (!!) and rounding the bend at the end of this summer to age 18. He was so horribly sick last year, I don’t know how he made it through - well, I do know. Caring people like yourself were praying and thinking of us. Thank you!!

If you can find out country of origin with linen it will help you choose. Obviously Ireland/Scotland mills produce great linens but so does Italy, Lithuania, and Korea. I got gorgeous Italian linen from Elliott Berman when they had their 50% off sale ($10 a yd). I also try to go to estate sales to find old linen tablecloths, even yardage. I don't care for most linen/rayon blends as they tend to get fuzzy surfaces that eventually pill. The less you pay the more that will occur. Linen/cottons are especially nice for tops, nice for summer. Looking forward to seeing the dresses on both of you! I'm actually going to make a couple dresses this summer. I may wear pants or leggings under them, lol, since I haven't worn a dress since dinosaurs ruled the earth. My style is the opposite of yours (along with our figures, dang it) but still enjoy seeing what you make. You are very generous to give away this fabric, thank you for being sweet enough to do it ♥️

I sew a lot with Linen. I wash it and then dry it on high to get all thé shrinkage out of the way. Then I wash it again and dry it flat because I don’t want fight the linen.

I watch you all the time on You tube on my TV. I give you a like. I wish I could sew like you do but I am just getting back into sewing. I watch you, Joy, lifting pins and needles. You all make me so J. I saw the fabric and the whole collection could do summer up great. Oh the Linen purists are on the march, I love the colours, I bought buttercup yellow linen mix, just As I was finishing I thought ooooo I will tidy that seam … run it through the overlocker and had a section of folded fabric caught …. Hi Viv - you have inspired me to start to sew clothes again. I had studied costume design in college but hadn’t seen in 25 years. Started again during covid making mask for friends and surgical caps for ICU nurses. Your videos on vintage patterns made me want to make dresses as well. I have obtained some patterns and am starting some projects. Can’t wait to see what you made for June.

Love the cottons and you’ve inspired me to make a lovely set of pyjamas for my big sister to receive visitors post-surgery. There are sleeping pyjamas and there are “receiving” pyjamas 😆 and your fabric fits the latter perfectly!
