    Great video! I grew up down the bottom of Pennywell Rd right around Ches's and Leo's. I was always a Ches's man growing up but Leo's was excellent! I remember when Scampers was at the corner of Lemarchant and Longs Hill and the Big R was on Harvey Rd across from the CLB. It was fish n chips heaven growing up. I've made mention in another video but there is a difference between townie and baymen fish n chips. Baymen do it well, townie do it best! 😂 Keith's really is excellent. Another spot deep into the Irish Loop is Riverside in Cape Broyle, it is lovely.
    I loves me a good dressing as long as there are no onions so i always have to ask beforehand.
    Random question, is Hutch named Andrew Hutchings?

    • @mark_royle_newfoundland
      @mark_royle_newfoundland  4 місяці тому +6

      Its actually pretty interesting why it’s like that in Newfoundland. I can’t be sure that this is why, but I remember as a little kid the big Coke bottling plant shut down and a lot of ppl lost their jobs. Pepsi kept their plant going so everyone got behind them. I was super young and never really understood what that meant at the time but I still remember it being a very big deal. I’m pretty sure that still plays a role in how Pepsi is much more prevalent than Coke in NL even to this day.

    Great video. Lots of amazing fish and chips spots there. Dicks Fish and Chips to me is like Keiths to you. I haven't found any better. Rating fish and chips in Newfoundland is like rating who was better Gretzky, Lemieux or Orr. Lol Opinions will vary, but all were the best at one time. My only thought as a similar lover of fish and chips is to, when you can, skip the dressing and gravy. Not because ots not delicious, but because, if you get a chance to start exploring outside of Newfoundland, you won't be able to find it. I feel dressing and gravy completely skews the true taste of a fish and chips and if your rating then realky are you rating the fish and chips or more the dressing and gravy. Not being on the island I have had to force myself to be true to only cod fish, chips, salt and vinegar to stay consistent and fair. Theres a lot of bad fish and chips in North America that good dressing and gravy would have covered up! Lolol. Anyways, great job and a great service you've done for those restaurants.

    So looks like you were there in fall or winter. If you go in the summer there are more fish n chips places to go to. The Station Diner in Holyrood probably has the best fish n chips around and Tony’s in Kelligrews is pretty amazing too and Tony’s also has incredible joys dinner too

      The footage here is actually from all points throughout the past year and a bit. I have Station Diner on my list for this summer, and I just added Tony's to my list now, thanks for the tip! I never heard of Tony's before but I'll check them out soon for sure.

      I just searched for Tony's but all I see in the area is "Tiny's"... could that be the place you're talking about?

    What is dressing? Like stuffing? Can you use stove top as a substitute? Also why don’t you add ketchup to your fries?

    • @andrewhayes88
      @andrewhayes88 4 місяці тому +1

      Newfoundland dressing is used as a stuffing for turkey but used a lot with fish and chips as well. All it is, is Mount Sio savery with breadcrumbs. On fish and chips it's usually served dry, not cooked. When used as a turkey stuffing, it's more wet/cooked (which I honestly prefer but I will eat the dry dressing as well). It's nothing like Stovetop style dressing/stuffing when it comes to looks or taste.

    But dressing is always available. I dont like it ,i think its like sawdust lol. My grandfather was from Marystown. I moved here years ago due to my mother marrying a man from there. Im from Ontario.
    I think Scampers fish and chips were good. Not sure if they are still open.
