I feel the heat pain too. Been living that for days. Nice video .
The more I watch these, the more it all makes sense. I think I would be comfortable doing a repair, but there's definitely no substitute for hands-on experience.
Oh man, it's hot. I feel the heat even watching you. Hat off to the hard working people.
I always enjoy guys channels when their building them! Good , solid , fact filled content!
Your is good! I am a finish /carpenter ,contractor !
I am 63 and I am ok!
Having said that if you neglect your knees and feet (tennis shoes that’s why your feet hurt more & more!) u will fold at 50!
Sit in a chair or hv a hobby & dead at 70 , 300 lbs!
Their R great shoes Keen makes some however in our line of work I wear good unlined boots in summer and lined in winter!
See the sole of your foot flexing all over? It will just destroy your feet!
Don’t believe me ask a foot doctor?
That said your an excellent pro at what u do!👊. Hats off!
Excellent job from start to finish. Well done. You absolutely know what your doing. Whoever hires you to replace their roof is getting what they pay for.
Nice work. I like the step flashing a little longer going up.
I love learning from a pro. Thanks for showing the entire video.
Alot of mistakes in the vid. Definitely dont do it this way
Enjoyed video ! Always hated being on a roof temperatures over 70. Tracking up the shingles.
I hate the heat. Mid Michigan, hot, muggy, no breeze. Stupid Ice and Water is like Saran Wrap with melted bubble gum on the back. Nearly impossible to handle and install smoothly without it folding over on itself and sticking. Once it sticks, forget about ever separating it. I like how you did the chimney flashing. Very neat.
From a retired building inspector you a connoisseur professional
We're getting there! Great progress, especially in the scorching weather.
I loved the detail in this video. This one really explained this chimney roof detail. Great job!! Also, your bros channel is funny when he gets around to posting....
this stuffs pretty pricey, as he chucks it to the other side of the roof 😂😂 like a true roofer😂 grew up with my father being a roofer, learned a bunch from him, slowly got away from roofer, hang gutters now, less beating on your body! ever do “torch down”? i know there’s a name but just called it what my father did! up here in buffalo, all the snow we get and the dumb builders that like roofs with not enough slope, everyone always called my dad, was soo good at it, and i don’t think there are many people that knew how to do it correctly! enjoy your videos, learn many different things i either never knew, or partially knew! always good to learn! and have that skill!! keep it up, always enjoy your work! stay safe!
It's now looking really great .. great job 👍👍👍👍
Liked how easy he made it look but it was good and fast
I understand in theory why you left the upper flashing proud, if you weren’t using counter flashing. Since you are counter flashing, I personally would have wrapped the corner. Anyhow everyone has their own techniques! I appreciate your videos, keep’em coming!
I agree was gonna ask how that impedes the counter flashing
Better than most but not the best sorry Charlie
@@ThomasBurke-v2l not impressed at all with that job
I like how you bend and cut alum flashing w/o tin snips!
Thank you very much
Firstly, thanks for this excellent five part tutorial. I have a question. At 13:17 where you installed a narrow (~5 inches wide) shingle strip, wouldn't the two nails that fastened it be vulnerable to water from the piece of flashing above that shingle strip? I am thinking if you cut two wider shingle strips, say, each ~22 inches to fill that gap (which should be ~39+5 = 44 inches wide) instead of a ~5 inch wide shingle and a complete shingle, then this problem goes away. However, that does take more time and potentially wasting one more complete shingle. Appreciate your potential answer.
Thanks for sharing. Good job.
With almost 20 years experience in the US doing mostly shingles, good to see someone that cares.
On another note, have you ever seen ice and water shield actually do what it claims to to do? I use it. But not so sure why it's code almost everywhere. Almost like it's a racket of some sort.
It’s good for keeping nailheads from leaking through to the decking (and valley run off~ snow build up on eves)… Haven’t seen much on tear-offs yet, but it’s coming, and it’s probably not gonna be pretty. Get your supplement game ready.
I like this style video ty!!
Filming with a GoPro on your head was a great idea 👍
It's a little irrelevant, but your voice resembles Patrick Mahomes haha. His has more of a kermit the frog tone, though.
Anyway, great video as always.
I'm a Shingler/Roofer for only 7 years now, but still am learning a lot of new, and reconfirming a lot by watching your videos.
Thank you! 💯
You can make some damn good cuts my guy! I’m the best cut man on my crew hands down! 🤙🏽
Thank you for this
Love it good job on the flashing and filming. Just got my Go pro today!😁
You need an old couch cushion really bad.. keeps those knees cool and prevents scraping the shingles up.
🐐 Goat on the roof! 🐐
Great job
I fix a lot of leaky chimneys done like that, drip edge goes on top of that flashing.
Thank you!
Albion B26.......solid!
Why not use that acordian corner peace with the ice and water? Or try and put another peace of ice in there 2 help seal corner or some tar?
Hey Brian, Sean from Adaptive Roofing in WA state! Thanks for all you do.
Quick question @13:10. Manufacturer spec calls out to never leave shorter than a 12” shingle running into your step flashing.
I’ve always wondered if this really mattered and I saw you didn’t blink an eye going in there with an 8” or so piece. This would save me a lot of headache stepping back to follow this 12” rule hahaha.
Let me know!
good job!
Get yourself a couch cushion and take off the covering and use the foam to kneel on,saves burning yourself, you will get to like the foam and won't want to work without it.
Should have added another piece of metal top corner of chimney before saddle metal went in,I wouldn't use cheap aluminum flashing ever,Rezibond is my go to metal, but does require painting or copper flashing is my 1st choice if it's a new roof install.
U can tell buddy a roofer the way he does metal lol. But great vids bro.
Love all your videos! Do you have a set price for repairs, such as chimney flashing like this one? In your other video, you had mentioned your approx. replacement figures in your market...which is similar to ours in my state. I was looking to start doing more repairs myself and it's basically a name-your-own-price type of scenario, as most either don't like or aren't capable of repairs/flashings.
10 repairs a week is 💰
I have found water leaking around my chimney in garage below roof, and yesterday saw shingles around chimney were still wet while all others are dry. Does this mean I have water stuck underneath shingles? And likely leaking? Thanks!
How you like that kobalt utility knife? I’ve got one but wondering how well they hold up. Cuz we all know roofing is a hard life for utility knifes.
He needs some hook blades.
Anyone that complains about that color difference just quote them what a whole new roof costs, because that's the only way you're gonna get perfect match.
Nicely done. What camera did you use?
This video was filmed with a GoPro hero 8
How far up roof from chimney did you go with the flashing?
Looked great man, we usually don’t put nails thst close to the step flashing, Have you ever had leaks?
Why didn't you use some kind of caulk or something around the bottom of the chimney before doing anything. In the gap of the decking and chimney? Is it bad to do so?
Two days later I'm at this point. lol. You're like... "I should be done by now".
Do you make your own step flashing? What gauge do you use?
I'd like to share something. since its abnormal and not easy and just goes to show what happens out there.
Im on a bad one. Its a front door overhang alley from the architect, where they used a stone facade, so alot like a chimney. except 2 dead spots, since theres 2 ridges sending water flow to the 2 dead spots.. The roofers came in first and installed roofing. then they came in after and laid stone facade. So the flashing is all under the stone facade. The shallow crickets in the dead spots didnt leak. Its the transition as the cricket sends the water out to the "side of the chimney" Also they didnt use ice and water shield anywhere and with the stone trapping their idea of "flashing" I cant get ice and water shield lipped over that wall after the fact. Obviously their idea of how to construct was never water tight from day1 so every house done with that plan leaks on that door overhang in the exact same place.
Also not 1 person ever caught this in the chain including the pre purchase inspectors. The only 1 that seems to catch this is insurance for storm damage as "improper install" which is spot on.
great tutorial I'm here trying to sharpen my skills around proper chimney work
one criticism, that's too high to go without a harness, i know the roof is flat but your hanging off the edge like that
careful bud that's a roofer killer
nice job, thanks for part 5. Came together nice man.
The counter flashing will take care of that issue and make a nice one piece finish. One more video to go 6string.
He will cover this in the next vid.
He chalked a line, and cut into the chimney for a long piece of flashing to be put in after he shingled it in.
Yes cutting into the mortar joints is better than doing a straight angled cut but if it's done right it will serve its purpose.
What if the chimney separates from the roof a little
Aluminum or galvanized flashing?
It's aluminum. I stay away from galvanized. Because over time it does rust.
Great video. Only thing for me is all 6 nails you put in the bottom apron. The flashing should not have nails especially at the bottom of the chimney. There's a different way for the bottom. Other than that, great video
Put ur way of doin it
I agree also. Especially if rhw nails blow through you will have a leak. I would nail on the outside just like a pipe boot and use a good adhesive caulk.
can u nail higher up?
so that more of the new shingles cover the nails...
Every roof shingle has a particular nailing strip location. The backside of the nailing line is where the extra tar or gummy area is to seal around the nail penetration.
No cause you need to nail thru the double and hit the shingle below
if you take the plastic film off the shingles that makes them stick together in the heat. glues the whole roof together after it's installed. shingles are less likely to blow off in a storm if they're stuck with tar.
The plastic is made to disintegrate
@@deadboyx360 nah sorry, it's there to keep the shingles from sticking together in the stack when they're being stored. you need to peel it off when installing
@qbitcc anywhere that teaches you about shingles or roofing including schools tell you to not remove it....maby your from a different part of the world where you have something different you use
yeah i noticed that a lot of supposedly qualified people are doing it wrong. people should use their brains more often @@deadboyx360
most shingles directly on that strip of plastic says do not remove
Is step flashing 4 x 4 x 8 ?
Yes
How long do those roof coverings last, the shingles I mean?
Do you ever worry about that last nail on the shingle being so close to the step flashing going on that shingle
Should you nail the flashing to the roof in all cases?
If it's new construction, you can nail the flashing to the subsiding, that's ideal. If it's a reroof or in this case brick, you can't nail to the subsiding. Shooting the flashing at the top outer edge to the roof deck is perfectly fine. Just don't shoot the nails close to the 90° bend. Or anywhere near the bottom edge where water gets to it. If it's not shot or pinned down from moving, say with caulking it could slide out of place, causing a leak.
I appreciate your response. Could I send you a few pictures with suspected issues to see wht you think?
How hot is it?
I get flashing but what’s preventing water from getting behind it since bricks are flat?
Counter flashing.
i liked when you paused to appreciate the breeze
Brian you look like you had a tough day there
Looking at doing this myself. How does this process transfer to a chimney with wood siding instead of brick?
The step flashing process is the same just goes behind the wood siding.
Sorry I know you’re busy, but just making sure. That would require removing the old siding, installing the flashing, and replacing the siding again, right?
Dont you need a 1/4 inch gap between the shingles and the wall for expansion?
Yes but not for expansion You need it to let water flow and debris to flow
maybe expansion in Canada? @@joshfullerton5608
Ask Santa for some knee-pads and work gloves!!!
No underlayment at 26:01
I'll buy you a cold one if you tell me what blades you use! 😎
Never put a 6 inch piece that close to the chimney. Your key way (seam/rain line) is an inch from the flashing. Never use anything under a foot. On a rake or wall as well
Why no gloves and knee pads especially if it’s hot?
If you dont mind me asking what would an average price be for a job like that?
It can very by market, is say $800 to $2,000
Yah more like 2000 and that is a great price , reasonable my dude
Regarding the clear plastic stripes, I understand that they are there to prevent the shingles stick together before installation. But you did NOT answer why it doesn't need to be peel off when you install it.
Where is your foamy
why so many nails in one shingle ?
Surprised you don't have a safety line. You only fall once.😬
Why don’t you put the shingle first then slide the step flashing underneath that way the same nail gets both don’t have to put more u know what I’m saying.? Just my opinion either way doesn’t matter just a tip.. and u should make videos like this I prefer the long videos or at least the 10-15+ mins
Why 2 nails in step,isn't 1 enough???
so they dont pivot
Shingles tight to the flashing? There is no room for water to flow freely. Dirt and debris will accumulate in that tiny Grover between the shingle and chimney, water won’t be able to freely flow and it will back up underneath shingles with time. Should leave a finger width gap on all flashing.
Here is a quick fix for your knees and hands being hot.... GLOVES AND KNEE PADS 👍
Why people don't use gun for repair?
The first piece of metal you put on the bottom of the chimney is supposed to be sit on top of the last shingle exposed and you should be using "roof to wall/end wall metal" that is 26 gauge I believe definitely not some thin cheap tin.
I would just do v cut rather then hang it past
Too many nails.. why the second nail, ocd?
One to fill the preexisting hole in the original shingle and one to give strength. It's also not uncommon to use two on the ends in high wind/hurricane areas.
Sloppy and bad technique.
Your step flashing is going to always bubble up because you didn't secure them correctly.
You never noticed that ?
Why do you put those nails at the top at that location ? The step flashing never will stay flat
because think about it... why would they put glue on it then put a sticker so they dont stick to each other, well why put glue on there in the first place then?
if you dont trust my logic, then trust my experience
Ah yes, wear knee pads.
Hells hotter!
That wrong the water is goin to go down the chimney and go under the single u should have put shingles down frist then put the metal down on top of the shingle then you start goin up the chimney
The front of the chimney I would never do
That’s not how you flash a chimney my friend. That bottom metal that you installed first, goes on top of the shingles!!!
That's what I said, this guy is a hack
Ghetto sheetmetal
Why did you put you front pan under the shingle it will leak metal on top of front, under sides and under top, but if you looking for more work in the future keep doing it wrong
next time TAKE OFF THE STICKER son!!!!
Really sloppy work not even wearing boots or using the right equipment all my metals are done on a brake and nicely done im sorry but this one really offends me as a repair roofer my self
He is a good roofer man , what u mean sloppy, why don’t u make a video instead of criticism
If you can't handle the heat get another job
40 years in and only rookies Complain about the temperature.
Why do American houses use such flimsy materials?
How far up roof from chimney did you go with the flashing?
