    “Tar is not a problem solver” I love it! I HATE that everyone smears tar on roof leaks!! It makes everything harder when you go to take it up and repair it properly. This is a perfect little repair for a simple problem, I woulda done it a little different but this works the same way

      Integrity sure is, I am on my 3rd leak where the roof is not properly flashed, it is 6 years old and supposed to have a 50 year warranty behind it. First leak appeared after 2 weeks and they took absolutely no ownership of the issue, charged me an additional 3500 to put a cap on my chimney, which they insisted was the cause. I fought the to reflash the chimney in the process and they did a cut and whack job so badly a 6th grader might have done better. What a joke

    Our house may have this beat. Our house was built with wood tri-members supporting the brick, brick was installed before any through wall flashing was done to extend over the wood members back to the sheathing. Roofer came out to do the roof and just threw up some counter flashing at that area with a ton of caulk. Worked for a few months. Now we have leaks all over and our builder is going to have to pull all the brick to add the through wall flashing.

    Owens Corning Duration, decent shingles. I find the Oakridge actually seals better against the stone face rather than the Surenail strip of smooth fabric. Surenail holds the nails better sure, but much easier to break the seal. Owens Corning is the only brand I install in Southern-Ontario. I've patched more IKO and BP roofs than I'll ever be able to remember.

    • @jealouselephant4139
      @jealouselephant4139 4 роки тому

      @@GrandRoofingInc The only available asphalt shingle products in my area are OC, GAF, BP, & IKO. I was in Austin, Texas earlier this year to help some friends re-roof their house and we used OC Oakridge and I immediately noticed that they are thinner than the Oakridge in Canada. Which makes sense due to the snow and ice glacier effect we get here that slowly grinds the stone face off. We don't have any hail rated asphalt products in this part of Canada because we don't get the type of hail to warrant that save for once or twice in a decade.

Right at bottom of valley line made . I then cut steel sheet to that line at angle .some going underneath and some starting angle cut for valley. Just wounding if there a different way

    I'm old fashioned from old school and still like woven valley and if colder will use the cut but there this way other contractors use by running shingle up valley and then butting the shingles to that .how do you prefer your valley

    • @GrandRoofingInc
      @GrandRoofingInc  4 роки тому +1

      I prefer Texas valley I believe it's called. The lower ridge section gets roofed first across the valley. Then the other section you crack a line up the valley lay a shingle on the line and but your shingles to the corner of that shingle you laid in the valley. It looks good lays and seals good, causing a channel for the water to run down. I'm not a fan of closed cut valley. They can be done but don't forget to cut the top corners. By the way we usually always lace the bottom row of any valley. We also take into consideration slightly if there are different sized sections with different pitches causing more runoff on one then another.

      @GrandRoofingInc  4 роки тому

      Hey to Sweden! What is required in Sweden?

    • @torsson2
      @torsson2 4 роки тому +1

      @@GrandRoofingInc For the first, Shingle is not used anymore for anything other than "Not so important if it will blow of or leak". What we have is SBS 5500 or PVC 1.5mm (Except from
      strip-folded sheet metal or concrete tiles) and for that we are required to DO AT LEAST 30cm under a wall or a "obsticle" so that rain or snow will not push trough and this will be welded with fire or hot welder. Your kind of wall flashing with the sheep metal under the shingle has been banned in SBS 5500 since the 1990's. I may be a bit wrong but i have done flatroofs for 15 years now. I will se if i can get a hold of a "flatroof warrenty book" in english and send to you to look at. But if we do a tile roof we have almost the same rules, 30 cm under a wall or obsticle and after that a new sheep metal under fasad or cut into a tile wall. Flashing on a old sheep metal is a big NONO because of condensation. I like your videos but for the most part i think "Why not do it with a hotwelded material like SBS 5500 or PVC".

    • @aurorasplawn5024
      @aurorasplawn5024 3 роки тому

      Let's see some pictures and most good shingle brands have 120mph wind warranty and if you know anything about tile youd know there extremely fragile and not good for environments that have extreme heat and cold in summer and winter they crack shingles stand and seam glue down flat roofing are the best roofing systems out there and PVC welded roofs are trash but I also do those kinds to so I can talk with knowledge behind it never talk down to your fellow roofers we need to help each other perfect are craft I work on multi million dollar projects all year round and I guarantee my roofs would pass with flying colors have pics to back it up to

    • @torsson2
      @torsson2 3 роки тому

      @@aurorasplawn5024 Just saying that Sweden and US have a huge difference in rules and kind of materials on roofs. It was not ment to be "Ahh we make everything so much better". Concrete tiles in sweden have a 30 years warrenty "Frost cracking and paint" and 30 years for the underlaying membrane. For flatroofs done with PVC or SBS we are forced to order a "Wind load calculation" that will make sure the roof will not fly off in storms that occure in sweden. Also in sweden you can leave a 15 years Waterproofing guarantee that will cover "ALL" damages if the roof leaks within 15 years (This is a insurance and will never pay anything) but it looks good on paper. That said i like Grand Roofing's videos and my comment was just to point out the difference between different countries.

    One of the biggest causes of water damage is people going overboard on the caulk to try to keep water out and not allowing the water a chance to drain out when it inevitably gets behind the caulk. I'd much rather have a roof, window, siding, etc that allows the water to drain out when it does get in than risking water still getting in but being left with nowhere to escape. Wood can last a long time when its able to dry out after getting wet but when its not able to dry out it will rot in no time

      I do agree with everything you stated but I will caution on the side of finding someone extremely backlogged. I personally am not trying to backlog that far anymore due to the constant increase in material cost. I don't find it fair to Schedule the install that far out and either I take a hit on inflated costs or the homeowner gets a surprise. As long as the homeowner and contractor are clear on that, it can be a good indicator.

Getting quotes that say replace, other quotes say existing is good for re-use. Big differences in cost. 25yr old house... Going from original 3-tab shingles to OC Duration. Original vinyl siding is sidewall material. House is in New England. Google was just as divided. Would love your thoughts on this?

      Haha I had seen that video! Once when i went out of town to visit friends, they had a leaky window so I made a flashing kick out out of their old license plate. Josh bigger always has banquets though!!

    Most think hammer means tradesman. Although they don’t really know how much we’re doing that is engineering the right way for them to have best done in our knowledge and skills..

    Sealants are for aesthetics, not for keeping out water, they start to degrade as soon as they're exposed to the atmosphere and uv radiation.
    There should be a licensing process to buy tar, every moron with a truck and ladder use it as a fix all in place of actual knowledge.
    I like the accordion corner flashing and use it as often as I can, but always leave a dog leg on my flashing.
    Thanks 🙈🙉🙊

      I was taking care of the leak before we got rain for the guy. Did not charge him a penny, wasn't redoing his whole roof. Yes whoever did the roof originally was missing flashing and some of what they did was wrong.

      @@GrandRoofingInc Wasn't knocking you at all. I was just pointing something else the previous roofer disregarded.
      I appreciate your videos.
      Sorry if you took it the wrong way.

      No you're fine I didn't take it bad. Just wasn't sure if you heard in the video that I wasn't charging and was just taking care of the issue at hand. I didn't mean for it to sound bad back to you. Thanks for watching and commenting.

    I would like to see u use ice and water like u should, I know we all think we know it all , but to me unless in a high wind area all shingles should only have 4 nails, all shingles should be stepped, unless it’s a special shingle that fits together like a lego piece lol. Anyway you content is good, but I believe that all penetrations throw a roof should have ice and water on the sides and top, what do u 🤔. I do flat roofing too, and I watch a lot of Zack from Veteran

    Why have they not invented roofing material and parts that just works seamless. All these roofing techniques seem kinda Mickey Mouse. You would think in 2021 we would have better products for roofing that just got into place without having to patch this and that.
