      I have *all* your patches and love them dearly. You are absolutely a legend and you and the Community Firmware are the best thing to happen to the Deluge. Having said that, there definitely is a "Deluge sound" that it's a little hard to break out of without lots of multisampling. The TE synths -- from the OPZ to the OP1 to the OPXY -- I've just found to be much more straightforwardly usable.

    What an excellent advert for the Deluge - I’ve been using the XY for a week now and you’re on the money with regards to the portability factor; there’s nothing else that can compete with it except for….the op-1 field! That said, the Deluge is my all time favourite groovebox and I’d certainly recommend it over the XY - It’s a jack of all trades. You’re right about sequencing sheet music: I’ve done this on the Deluge and it performed brilliantly.

    • @expander3710
      @expander3710 Місяць тому +4

      @@LFOVoyagerExcellent but not for everybody - I think it’ll be better for a lot of people than the op-1 field: sequencing allows you to go back and tweak endlessly whereas recording to audio doesn’t. It also plays very well with external gear and thanks to the audio buffer you can affect external synths with all the glitchy effects. Resampling is very easy too. I think people look at it and think because it’s small it shouldn’t cost so much, but miniaturising technology is expensive, and this thing is so miniature.

    Interesting take! As someone that just makes music for a fun hobby, I just sold my Deluge to help fund my XY. It was super powerful but the workflow is just really bad to me, I shouldn’t need a notebook of shortcuts to use the thing. I’ve had more fun in 2 days on the XY than the 2 years I had the Deluge.
    I also have an M8 MK1 that I love and is way more powerful, but it’s kind of like working in excel. There’s just nothing else portable that’s quite so immediate and fun as the XY in my personal opinion.

      The Deluge sequencer for drums is the best I’ve ever seen. Not only swappable pieces in the kits, but infinite pieces and infinite length, plus zoom in for notes between the 1/16ths AND triplet mode. If they narrowed down the functionality of Deluge to just the sequencer and drum kits in a smaller format with punch in fx and better effects in general, I would have gotten it over XY.

    This was a really great video, I’m impressed! Very fair to narrow down the reasonable comparisons. I owned Deluge and had a blast, but sold it after a year. There were some things that I couldn’t get over. As you pointed out, workflow is huge, and Deluge felt tedious to me personally. I never felt like I could PERFORM with it, merely compose and press play, which I didn’t feel like I needed a $1,000 (at the time) device for. It also lacked features that my particular musical direction requires, and it lacked fx sends via hardware. I considered buying another Deluge, but the hardware limitations stopped me. I do appreciate the new screen and the open source aspect, though.
    XY came out and the more I dug into its features, the more it became clear that this was the groovebox I had been waiting for. Arrangeable, performable, portable, and very efficient, inspiring and creative workflow. There are still some software updates I can hope for it, but it truly is the most suitable device for my particular musical style (with sound design done externally and sampled in.)
    Again, great work on this video!

    Great video and an unexpected turn. The Deluge actually shows how much of a scam the synth industry seems to be lately 😄, at least that's how I feel. Especially when looking at hardware synths that were analog 20 years ago but are now being re-released as digital versions with the same polyphony count as the analog ones, it's something I still don't understand to this day. My mobile phone can handle more polyphony and almost an entire DAW. Then, looking at the Elektron Digitakt / Syntakt... no polyphony at all. Only two effects for the master, at least for the Syntakt. They already got us to a point that we are celebrating an addition like a chorus to the digitakt 2. It feels pretty ridiculous. Next would be Ableton move .... 4 tracks... no more to say 😄.

      The OP-Z is pretty complicated, so I expect more or less the same from the XY. That said, the OP-Z is arguably the most creative and unique sequencer around. An expanded version of it in the XY with better synth engines will be well worth the investment of time required to master it. The XY will also unlock some cool workflows in the Field and vice versa. I’m saving up for an XY to use with my Field and Ableton Move (amazing device for the cost).

For me op-xy is a more refined version with workflows similar to both deluge and m8, although doing neither quite as efficiently, far more expensive, but a fun a different set of features. I’ve been on a quest to find something I like more than the deluge, but always and be up back there!

    The battery life is way better on the OP-XY, 16 hours (vs 6 for deluge, which is still pretty good). Perhaps the energy efficiency is due to reasonable limitations. It is also a much smaller device, and this adds to costs. It is actually 9 times 4 bars (nine patterns per track), so way deeper than you said. The punch in effects and the step components can be quite helpful, can be recorded on the step sequencer, and are fun to play live. Super entertaining video. Good job. The deluge looks sick.

But then I found MPC and fell in love with it - just added Arturia Miinlab 3 to have a decent MIDI controller. I initially loved the portability idea, but then I figured that whenever I can squeeze some time to make music, I always have a desk and power outlet nearby anyway. And MPC has fantastic, easy to use piano roll, which I use most of the time. So in my case MPC it is. But I really hold a lot of respect towards Deluge, so maybe one day...

    I have both: Deluge for over two years and OP XY for about a week. While Deluge is a great idea, its execution is severely flawed. I won't go into details, but it just doesn't sound good and is very easy to overload. (Yes, that included third-party patches; I've been programming synths for over 30 years.) While not perfect, XY sounds good out of the box, and the workflow is much cleaner. I use Deluge as a portable sequencer for external gear (Hapax in the studio).
    OP XY's form factor and battery are an excellent benefit for me. Slick design is a bonus :)
    Having said that, I'll be keeping both.

    • @laryngis431
      @laryngis431 Місяць тому +2

      It's true that the Deluge CPU can sometimes get overloaded and drop voices, especially when you're throwing a lot of FX on your tracks. But it's a 2-second solve, just resample those FX-heavy clips into an audio clip and you've fixed it
      Like any groovebox there are limitations, there are also workarounds for a lot of them. And for fans of the Deluge, the few limitations that remain are often vectors for creativity and resourcefuness that improve the quality of the musical output.
      I think it comes down to whether the particular abilities AND limitations of any device suit your approach to music. So, if money is no object and the OPXY fits your workflow - that's awesome.

    I really want to love the Deluge, I even sent mine in back to NZ to have the screen installed, but it's really tough to make it sound great from first switch-on, especially when using the integrated speaker. I think it's really important for a digital notepad to have a preset palette that is optimised to jump into working on an idea and not having to do extended sound design or preset auditioning without getting put off by how low quality it sounds. I've purchased a few preset packs to try to ameliorate this but the workflow to get going is just too long.
    Compare this with the OP-Z, which has a much more limited sonic palette, but they're all ready to go, and the workflow of the OP-Z really urges you forward in a way the Deluge doesn't - put your drums here, bass here, chord here, lead here, and change to a different chord and I'll rewrite it so it sounds great. Have a play with a few filters and punch in effects. Boom. Song. IMO that is peak musical notebook. Ableton Move is similar in a lot of ways, trading the OP-Z's excellent chord stuff for the amazing capture button and an even better, exceptionally curated set of presets.
    The Deluge is like sitting at an American style diner with a huge menu, most things inedible, the chef not really doing the work of bringing you the best choices, at every step. You can order every course after every course and most things are not what you want but we're still going to offer them all to you all the time. Ultimately, making art is about inspiration and taste, not feature set. I'm delighted that Deluge is open source and hope that will result in a much more designed, supportive and opinionated workflow, but typically open source projects focus on adding features rather than shaping a vision.
