    I always use a mirror when adjusting convergence. Much easier that way.

    It seems CRT's are still being made in China and India, a lot of them are slim ones too. I like the way a lot of them look, they have much more character than LCD/LED/etc tv's. And since they look modern, it's interesting to think that maybe if CRT's were still being made in our countries right now that this is how they would look.
    I think it would be cool to have one, but I've not found anywhere online that sells them individually.
    What are your thoughts on them, do you know much about them?

      I really like the way the black and red ones look.
      Also, Googling "crt" "tv" "china" or "india" in Google image search brings up a few pics too.

    You’re on point with a little zap really messing with your confidence. 😅 I was doing some small adjustments and got a small poke. I stopped there to revisit in the morning. All good now. I learned a lesson. Thanks as always!

    I love your videos. You inspire me to collect CRTs. What's the name of the tool you use to see the colors ?

    I think that if I started adjusting convergence there would be 100% probability that I would get shocked... about how terrible I made picture look like after I put my hands into the monitor XD

    Best way is to use a mirror to view the screen while adjusting from the rear

    I adjusted convergence yesterday for the first time in possibly 25 years and I got a nip from one of the scan coil terminals, I'm assuming it was horizontal because it was a tiny burn and smelled like bacon. Sometimes there's a plastic box over the terminals. If not you can stick heatshrink on them.

    I’m so glad I found this channel! I wonder if you have ever worked on a 1982 Mitsubishi front projection TV? I’m having serious issues with my red gun.

    MyPVM- 20M2MDU has a white knob in back that separates or combines RGB guns. Is that not a "pot"?

    • @RetroTechUSA
      @RetroTechUSA  5 років тому +1

      Ah, I see. Sorry that is a pot for Horizontal Stat convergence. Still can get zapped if yo ground your hand against those heat sinks.

    Love the content as always. Question from your past experiences at the Grand Ole Expo - are there any vendors there selling retro games? Didn’t see anything mentioned specifically on the site but thought I’d check.

      My booth and at least one other booth will be there selling retro games, retro consoles, etc.

    Thank you for all of the great videos. I currently own two Philips 105S CRT Monitors which both have different convergence problems which I would like to fix. However, the rings are covered in a substance (I suppose some sort of glue?). What would be a safe manner of removing it? And what kind of tool/cleaning materials would you recommend for getting rid of it?

    I got one of those jeweler's loupes on AliExpress for $3 shipped. It'd be better if it had a color filter on it but you could at least get it close enough.

      Oh, and talking about NTSC vs. PAL, some monitors split all of the geometry between NTSC and PAL instead of just a few things like that service manual. What's worse is that sometimes this isn't apparent and you access the alternate values by switching modes. Some monitors (N series come to mind) split variables between NTSC, PAL, _and_ each input has different settings. But not all settings switch over. So for example, the N1/N2 monitors don't let you adjust H position on RGB but do on composite/S-Video.

    • @RetroTechUSA
      @RetroTechUSA  5 років тому +1

      That's interesting. Unfortunately I just don't have anything PAL and never really come across it. Also thanks for the feedback on the jeweler's loupe. That's a way better deal than I paid for the official tool.

  • @martinweizenacker7129

    PAL/NTSC geometry issue is not normal. I can switch between 50 and 60 Hz input signals on my PVM and the geometry, such as Pincushion, is the same for both if adjusted properly for one.
    The only thing that bothers me is that there are shared H SIZE and V CENTER controls, so you can never get it super perfect in that regard for both (although no big deal).

    • @RetroTechUSA

      Thanks for the information. 🙂

  • @moesceeto9559

    Some PAL sets are really a pain to configure to NTSC signal because you can only make changes in PAL mode. My way to do it is to connect two different sources, best with the same input, one PAL and one NTSC and switching between them.
    Also the 240p Testsuit for Wii can switch between PAL and NTSC which is much more comfortable and doesn't require two of the same inputs. It's still tedious tho.
    And I can also confirm that not all geometry settings are separated in the two videomodes.

    • @lullylew9083
      @lullylew9083 Рік тому +1

      Some sets do have a 'write to 50hz and 60hz' option. I have to press 'display' on my Trinitron remote in the service menu and I get a 'WRT5060' option pop up that I can then press 0 to save the setting to both.

      @@lullylew9083 Oh that's good to know. I'll keep that in mind, next time I try to calibrate a Trinitron. Thanks!

    hi Steve, i recently got a consumer trinitron for free (kv29ls35b) it has some geometry issues which i want to try and fix, but when i turn the tv off i get a green dot with a little blue and red in the middle of the screen (like the crt gun is discharging) is this a sign of the tv dying? ive never seen anything like that on a crt before. if it is i dont think itll be much use to try and fix the geometry.. i uploaded a video so you can see what i mean ua-cam.com/video/gHeMRZziApE/v-deo.html

    • @RetroTechUSA
      @RetroTechUSA  5 років тому

      Wow that's crazy. I've not seen that. It may have some cold solder joints on the main board or it could also be a sign of the tv being worn out. If I were you I'd just try to adjust to as best possible and maybe check the board for cold solder joints and clean the dust out. Then use it till it dies and look for a better condition CRT in the mean time. There are many good consumer CRTs available for free or cheap.

    My arcade monitor doesn't have rings. How I'm I suppose to fix convergence?
