    Hi Brad. One of my Phals is currently in bloom. The blooming spike has two spikes, also in bloom, growing from it. I've never seen that before.
    My orchids live, and thrive, in my upstairs bathroom, no warmer or more humid room in our house, that has a skylight. They seem to love it.

    As long as the lowest point of the crown is okay (the point of witch new leaf emerges), then if you try to remove top leaf with all infected tissue with sterile utility knife, you could save that poor thing! If you still have it - try it, I have tried it myself and it DID work, so try that!

    I bought a Phal with the boom spike in the cental axis. And it has thrown off a keiki. I got out of curiosity because it was so different and I wanted to see how it would grow.

    You should put foam all around your greenhouse to protect it from the cold

    if I may suggest, only because it happened to me, with that rot... try some peroxide to disinfect it. with a ratio of 11 parts water and 1 part hydrogen peroxide. then take some fresh aloe vera rub it into the rot area, even let it sit on plant a while. I had one of my phalaneaopsis rot that was small and now it has begun growing a new leaf... at first I thought it was unsalvageable. but I did some UA-cam searching and this same method was prescribed, I thought "what do I have to loose". it was a brownish black & so small. I saw no hope. as of today it has doubled in size in a weeks time... I hope this does work for u if u attempt it...

      Thanks for the info, Dolores. How's it now? I had read that peroxide could be used undiluted (3% solution) but not about the Aloe. Cheers!

    Hi, I'm fairly new to phalenopsis orchids. I have 5 that I bought 4 which are in moss and 1 in bark. The 4 in moss have roots that look like their drying up and some look soft. They are in bloom at the moment and I just had one die from root/stem rot, the stem turned black a mushy, roots dried up and the blooms fell off. I think it was already dying when i bought it because i haven't had it but a month. My question is should I repot in a bark media while in bloom, I'm afraid if I don't they will die like the other plant but then if I do the flowers will die. What should I do?

    • @BradsGreenhouse
      @BradsGreenhouse  9 років тому

      JESSICA WATSON if the roots are dead or rotting I would repot it into an airy mix

    you gotta remove that top leaf!!! and original formula listerene (it's gold colored) works well to kill fungus and not harm the plant as well if you can find it. use a cutip or a soft tooth brush to clean in the crevices of the crown and leaves with listerene or cinnamon.. any black debris = NOT good

      ( : so glad i could help! i unfortunately just lost a plant to a combination of crown rot & root rot.. when i watered it, i soaked the pot in water just a little too deep and didn't let it drain fully afterwards. lesson learned. luckily i have it's brother, so i only lost one of two. i'm glad you were able to salvage yours!!

      If you have any advice on my one, the leafs have gone brown, you could say they look bruised!
      I had the plant in the conservatory and here in the Uk at the moment it is cold, think This coursed the problem, I now have it in the main house but I think this week the last leaf 🍂 will fall off.
      Is there anyway of saving this plant? Or is it a gonner

    maybie you should take a sterile tweezers and knife and cut out that leaf with crown rot? I did it my self when I noticed that my orchid has the crown rot, I just took sterile knife and tweezers and removed the sick leave from the crown. and after two months I saw a little green shoot - and that was a new leaf, It came from the hole, in witch the old leaf sat, and now year past, and it has now three new leaf, and new flower spike! so you should try to remove the damaged leaf, and sterile the leaf's hole in the crown, and It will grow new leafs for you!

      asli atasoy i guess it depends. I would add more sphagnum moss to your mix. It will keep it moist longer

    Hi Brad, I know just how you felt when you broke that spike - I did that to one of mine today... and it was so pretty! I've had crown rot in a few of my Phals and once I've gotten rid of the bad leaves and stooped the fungus spreading, the mother plant usually sends out keike which can be eventually detached, or sometimes a new baby plant grows from the bottom or side of the mother plant. But I can't recall the mother plant itself ever sending out new leaves.

  • @stevehochman1361
    @stevehochman1361 9 років тому

    Any Phalaenopsis that is allowed to retain water in the crown WILL rot. Either remove the remaining water after watering or better yet tilt your pots at a 45 degree angle. No chemical treatments will ever stop the rot. The damaged leaves should have been removed a long time ago.

    Orchids needs lots of air in the pots packed too tight over watering cause rotting.

    sorry to hear about the Phal , but at least you got a Keikei. The weather has been severe all over the place. We have the most snow in a few years here in NJ. And have had power outages it is scary not knowing when the power will come back on and if your plants will take a dirt nap from the cold

    • @BradsGreenhouse
      @BradsGreenhouse  10 років тому

      Yes, the good thing is we have electric and natural gas heat as well as natural gas hot water. So I can keep the hot water garbage can nice and toasty for them. Plan B would be bring the warm growers in the house.

    Quite the opposite here in Echuca, Australia, we have had extreme heat for 3 weeks now at 40+ deg celsius (110+ deg Farenheit) but the orchids seem to like it as they are doing very well in the shade house. Hope the Phaly makes it. Keep the videos coming, they are very helpful
