  • Let me start by saying I hope you and your family are well and you're coping during this nightmare.
    Today marks the 1st anniversary of getting our Kia e-Niro. What do we like and dislike about it and what will we do in a year when the lease expires?! All this and more of the usual inane ramblings.
    Ah, also - a bit of a teaser for something coming soon!

    We bought the Kia EV Niro SX Touring when we went to the Vancouver BC International Auto Show March 19 2019 It arrived approx. 1 month later. Loved it and it had all the bells and whistles ( LED lights Apps UVO etc. The problem with the charge flap is the freezing winter and I had used WD40 which didn't work and had a very thin plastic the length of 3 inches and worked. When the weather warmed up -no more problems. Had no problems with the driver electric seats. I turned the power on and has to be in park and adjusted to where I sat and then press the SET button and no more problems. Had no 12 volt battery problems. Very glad I did my research and test drove other EV's at the car show. Good luck on finding yur next EV.

    Thanks Andrew, you are 1 month exactly behind me on e-Niro ownership. I agree on the lane keep assist, you can’t see the button from the driving position but switching it off is as you say ‘muscle memory’. Mine is the lesser of two models offered here in France, manual seats that we find quick and easy to adjust. Mine is a buy as I am retired so it has to be a long termer. I will continue to report out on the experience on Kia e-Niro Diaries.

    We bought our E Niro in December 2019. We love it and it has all of the assorted little things that could be better that you mentioned. Our grocery store trips are 80 miles round trip. Electrify America is the charging system here that charges 10 times the retail price of electricity to charge on a long trip. Almost all of our charging is at home, but I hope someday the traveling charge rates make sense. Monroe Oregon USA

      Greg, Kia has modified their pricing for us Niro owners for a year, www.electrifyamerica.com/kiaselect it cuts the rate in half here in Washington. You might want to check it out if you haven't already.

    The Kia has a much more conservative EPA range than tesla's rating and even exceeds the base model 3. The Kona EV actually has a range that can actually hit 500km and thats with the same battery and motor. My soul ev has no issues with 450kms. Pain't is on the thinner side but still much better than the tesla panel gaps and paint issues. The X has so many issues I don't want it.
    I like the E-Niro as well, the soul ev has a more space and headroom and the seats are really comfy and makes you lazy. Friends that have had Mercedes also love it! E-Niro is certainly a great car for the price.

    Hi Andrew, thanks for another interesting video. I have just taken delivery of my e-Niro 4 yesterday and love it. Its very fresh out of the box and I am slowly getting to grips with all the gadgets. I took your comments to heart and got a ceramic coating put on mine. Such an exciting car to drive. Just love it, and on the same day my DVLA renewal notice dropped through the letter box to remind me of another saving. In London the noose is tightening for ICE owners as the mayor will introduce more charges for them over the next 12 months.

    Well, I have been listening to this video attentively and I hear that the benefits outweighs all the small issues you pointed out. I drive the Kia Niro hybrid in the Pacific northwest in the USA, and I love the vehicle. My biggest concern has always been, reliability, range and comfort space included which the Niro allows. I am sure that possible Kia might introduce a better capacity battery for an even longer range and then some of the cost you mentioned will help reduce the need to stop and recharge it frequently. The Hybrid gives me 545 miles of range in the Summer and about 500 in winter. My seats isn't electric on the driver side but then I adjust it once and it stays put. So some of the nitpicking problems you mentioned are very small that can be lived with.
    The scratching on the paint can happen with any vehicle that rubs tightly against a branch or shrub, it is unavoidable. The Kia Niro with the cargo box looks quite good, not too high and not too low? Tesla had many issues with their vehicles as well you can find many on UA-cam. Hopefully they are improving it with each model. The Niro was designed for efficiency and I am sure some of the other manufacturers will catchup, they would not want to loose market share in the end. People will always want the next model and the next which helps drive business and cycle wealth around. It is good to have competition, and then electric stations will multiply and compete as well. Just like the petrol station have been doing for years. Cheers.

    Hi Andrew,
    I love your videos ...I too have recently bought a 4+ e Niro. The current (2022) model has a sunroof, memory/heated seats etc.
    Mine replaced an older (and much cheaper) MG ZS EV., which was a nice car but had more niggles and 100 miles less range.
    I've solved my 'lane assist issue' by inserting a very thin cable-tie..that jams the button it. It can we pulled out in an instant ...if required. 😀

    We are in the UK also.Had ours just over a year and done 7000 plus miles. Mixture of long motorway runs and local. It claims an overall consumption of 4 miles per kwh. We have it on regen 2. Dont try to be economical. Had no issues and the car not seen the dealer since we got it. I dont understand what Ionity are trying to do. It is funded by several manufacturers and the EU so odd that they cannot compete with Tesla network. Perhaps they dont want it to be a success. As you say there are alternatives. Like you, I'm really happy with my car. Have not had any 12V battery issues so far (after 6 months), but I also haven't plugged in anything like OVMS.
    One comment - would not bother switching out the car to get the app. After a 1 year free trial, Kia charges a ridiculous amount of money for the services provided by the app. For example, if you'd like to have the ability to control the climate of your car remotely, it costs $225 USD per year.

    If they're struggling to build fast enough you're better off keeping. If it's a 23 month PCP dealer may overlook scratches as they want to sell you another. If you hand back to Kia Finance/or the Leasing Company if genuinely leased, and get an MG ZS electric for example you're at risk of a bill for a lot. Glad you like it.

We mostly charge at home. I agree with all your findings after 1 year - exactly the same for us. I had the gear selector and the chrge door changed at the 1st service at 10,000 miles under warranty - so all good now. Exactly the same problem with the paint under the "P" bubbling. Another really great video. The rear seat belt has been the biggest issue for my wife, as she struggles to lean across our son’s car seat to click it in place. I keep having problems with the charge cable locking in car, but I’m convinced I’m just being stupid!

    • @MrEV
      @MrEV  4 роки тому +1

      It’s so reassuring to hear other people having the same annoyance with the seatbelts. I really thought it was just us! I’ve had a couple of experiences with the cable locking and to this day I don’t know how I sorted it. Lots of desperate turning car on and off, unlocking using the keyfob etc. Like you, I’ve been convinced it’s user error so I’ve not mentioned it in the video. I’ll record it next time!

    • @MrCalnadrak
      @MrCalnadrak 4 роки тому

      Andrew Till Yeah, the cable locking is weird. The first time it happened, we were at a Pod-Point public charger and I called Pod-Point to help release it. They had to shut down the charger remotely! It took about 30 mins to get resolved, which wasn’t the best way to impress my wife and son of the benefits of free public charging 😣

    • @malleablemickey
      @malleablemickey 4 роки тому +1

      Re locked charging cable. I found out I always put my foot on the brake when I press the start stop button to switch off the car. So if it's on and charging, and I switch the car off (with foot on brake) ithe cable won't unlock. If it's on and charging and I just press the start stop button to switch the car off (no foot on brake) the charging cable unlocks. Really weird and quite possibly unrelated to your issue! Anyway hope this helps!

    I've been on the fence for about 4 months on buying this car. I actually wanted to wait for the new model to get cheaper but the opposite happened, it got more expensive.
    The things that stop me from buying it is the price, uncertainty about how battery capacity is going to be affected over time. Another small problem I have with electric cars in general is that so many people are buying them that we're starting to see people in line at public charging places and that's a big big problem I foresaw a long time ago. The reason I don't think it's that big of a problem for me is that I would plan on charging at the office and at home and to only keep public charging as an emergency alternative. Not only are there people in line waiting for their turn but the companies that service those are selling electricity at 50% profit and it starts becoming as expensive as a gas car.

    I am currently driving a E-niro 4+ 71plate
    1) The outside and inside meterials are mostly made out of cheap plastic. My car was hit by on coming traffic whilst I was stationary. The driver was doing around 15mph which was a Golf GTI.
    My front bumper cracked into pieces and the right front wing was pushed in. The washer bottle too was shattered. The total cost was £6K for repair. I was lucky it went down as a non fault accident. Now if I was not in my car and someone had hit and run. I would of had to go through my insurance, or be out of pocket for 6k.
    2) Rear seat belt is another issue, the belt does not roll back fully and sits tangled up. When driving the seat buckle makes horrible knocking sounds as it hits against the cheap plastic meterial, which in my opinion should be padded meterial.
    3) Charging from home is perfect and the savings are great, if you can leave it plugged in overnight to fully charge.
    But charging from charging points are very expensive and works out similar to a fuel car.
    Lots of time wasted finding a charging point. Waiting for a free space to plug in. 2-3 hours can be wasted.
    My overall opinion is the car is fantastic to drive and the handling is great.
    Its highly priced at 40k+ Which is really not worth it. For a family of 5 of us the boot space is very compact.

    I bought an MG ZS EV on the 1st March and within the 3 weeks I was allowed to drive it in UK until lockdown i drove over 1000 miles and for me that's a lot. It's my first EV and as per some of the other comments I would never go back to ICE. BP Charge master or Polar are great as they give you first 3 months subscription FOC and thereafter it's £7.99 a month and by paying this fee it drops the cost from 30p per kw to 15p per kw. In the Yorkshire area Engie rapid chargers are FOC until Oct 2021although with having a Zappi V2 installed I'm finding I rarely need a rapid charger for day to day usage:-) Kia is great as I test drove the car but with MG ZS EV costing just over £24K the £10K saving over E-Niro was too great:-) Great video review !

      @@MrEV Hi Andrew, I have subscribed to the polar plus (first 3 months free) but like you I tend not to drive enough to continue with subscription but it's certainly good value dropping kWh prices to 15p or free in some instances:-) I'm hoping a 3rd party company like OVMS develop an app for the MG ZS EV as this is one thing that most owners have an issue with as the Indian/Thai versions come with app but Europe/UK do not (GDPR issues I think).

      Have you fitted those roof rack bars the wrong way around, or was that an optical illusion near the start of the video? You probably have it right, but I have to ask. The wider edge should be at the front, as with an aircraft or bird wing. If they are fitted the wrong way around, then drag is increased noticeably in a headwind.

    The driving seat of my car has a memory function for two seat and mirror positions. That's very useful.
    The charge flap has the same issue, not opening properly in winter.
    About Ionity: It's a shame that KIA has not joined the Ionity cooperation so far. This being said there are better options than paying 0.79 € per kWh. Have you got the Chargeprice app? According to this app the best prices at Ionity charging points are offered by French provider Chargepoint (7.60 € flat) and by German provider Maingau (0.35 € per kWh).

    As an owner myself, imagen that I've to choose another one out of the kina/e-Niro/soul I'd be frustrated not having the possibility to change different settings in how to drive/Regen. You can set and forget or change when you want. Lane keeping I think you live in the wrong area. Seats, I didn't pay for the leather seats but you've versions with memory. And the seatbelts at the back, do you really put stuff on the middle seat? And for Ionity, yes I'm frustrated, not that I'm using it so much, so even when Kia comes with a solution it will be too expensive for me. But if you think that the 77kW is only available between 20 and 54%, what's the charge time difference on doing that part on a 50kW charger. Ok I know, France is a disaster for this moment. And long trip are mostly for holiday's so it doesn't matter these supplementary minutes. And just waiting until covid left the country to do my second maintenance I'm very happy with my choice and can't improve myself for this moment.

      Glad you’re enjoying it as well! Sadly we don’t have the option of memory seats in the UK. As for the back - we tend to always have things on the middle seat: usually the dog!
      That’s a good question about the charge time difference. It takes approx. 11 minutes charging between 20-54% on IONITY compared to 30 mins on a 50kW charger. That’s still assuming it gets 77kW of course as I’ve found it’s quite a rare occurrence getting full speed.

    What about charging speed in colder weather? I'm eyeing this car, because the 2021 model ticks a lot of boxes for us at a very good price. However, we make a lot weekend trips to our second home, which is around 400km. It's OK to have a charge stop somewhere mid way in Belgium, but would prefer it to be no longer than 15 minutes. Now, at 80 kW charging, that should work well enough (300 km winter range, so need another 25% or 16 kWh, while 15 minutes at 80 kW gives around 20 kWh). However, I do see a lot of info that in winter people hardly ever get top charging speeds. So, if it would only take 30 kW, I'd have to charge for about 40 minutes and that's too much for this trip (we leave eg Friday 6 PM after work, and don't want to arrive too late with our young son).
    So you reported around 220 mile winter range. At what speed is that (highway?), and do you then get full charging speed if you pull up at an ultra fast charger (100+ kW rated)? Thank you and good luck with the channel!

      I don't know if trim levels are different in Sweden, but in the UK it's the e-Niro '3' and above that have the app.
      Unfortunately I know nothing at all about the Marvel as it's not a car we get in the UK. I had a quick look at the Marvel's specs though and they look quite impressive. Great that it has vehicle-to-load, and can tow, wireless CarPlay/Android Auto. It also charges a little faster than the e-Niro.
      In terms of maintenance, in my experience the e-Niro has been very reliable. Both cars have great warranties, so that would put my mind at rest.
      My guess is the e-Niro will depreciate less than the Marvel, purely because it's cheaper to begin with.
      All I can say is, test drive them both and see which you prefer. Hopefully if someone else sees your comment and knows the Marvel well, they can comment with more authority than me!

      It was reported that the KIA Soul (I know video is about the e-Nero) release in Australia was being pushed back to at least 2021 as demand for the car is high so they are using stock to supply UK, Europe and US whereas Australia has 2 issues - lack of demand (probably due to lack of charging infrastructure plus how can demand increase without sales - ie chicken and the egg issue) and both lack of Government incentives and/or lack of penalties for not having EV's. Other countries have certain emission levels manufacturers have to meet and they do this by EV sales (hope I explained that properly).
      I'm from Australia and frustrated seeing what other countries can choose from, yet here any EV for sale is only available through some dealerships and usually only in the capital cities.

    Ionity is on the wrong way. It was not that Tesla-drivers were blocking the chargers. Even before Covid it is said that there was one charging session every two days per charger according to Ionity. This cannot work. Making lots of customers to charge somewhere else will not make this better. Second thing is, that they are only making up chargers with 350 kW. The problem is, these chargers are much more expensive and only Porsche Taycan is actually capable to take afford of the power except Model 3 LR/LRP. It would have made more sense to to build up 3/4 "normal" HPCs with 150/175 kW and 1/4 UPCs with 350 kW and only raise praises to 79 Ct for the UPCs. So I avoid Ionty although with ESL/Maingau I have a card paying 35 Ct / kWh. But I know ESL/Maingau loses money with it and I don't won't Ionity to take benefit from ESL/Maingau trying to be fair to the consumers.

Really? Forget it! That's before you start to look at the car compared to what you would get for the same money buying a normal car. I can't charge at work & sometimes I'd struggle to keep it charged at home too as we can't fit a decent charger. Then you start to consider the fiasco of the fragmented network & the charging issues (both energy supplying with occupied & faulty chargers, & monetary with all the different apps, subscriptions & payment methods.)
