Handed back our e-Niro this week. It was on lease. It ran faultlessly for 16k miles. Very comfortable no rattles. A superb car all round. My only niggle was when rear passengers left the vehicle and the twisted seatbelts would knock against the doors around corners. Looked around for a replacement lease. Tempted to get another Kia Niro, tested the new Hyundai Kona. The Kona was Ok but not better than the old e-Niro and all the safety alarms when driving drove us both mad. 1 mph over the limit a bing or a bong. Eyes not on the road another bing or a bong. The dealership guy said these can be turned off. But you have to do it ever time you entered the car. In the end noted that Genesis EV60 second hand prices were affordable for us. Went for a test drive and the car was amazing. Ended up with a car with 2k mileage and 24k off list price. I know the price will carry on dropping but hopefully this car will last us out in luxury. Having started with a Trotters Reliant Supervan on a motorcycle licence.

Back in 1979 at the ripe old age of 17 and with a full motorbike licence and having to wait an age to take my driving test I too ended up with a blue J reg Reliant Regal Supervan. How my mates mocked me but I didn't care, it had a heater and a windscreen and I could carry passengers and get my old mum a sack of spuds from the green grocers. I'm now an EV owner, amazing how far the car world has come in a relatively short time. By the way you had to be a contortionist to mess with that Reliant engine !

Your Niro reviews have made me swap my MG4 for a Niro EV. Apart from the fact my MG was in the dealer for 3 months with a charging fault the touch screen is maddening. Going back to buttons is a big plus for me.

Mrs P is quite right, lane departure and locked charge flap are rather annoying. It's the same on my Nero Ev.
Jonathon, I adopted your driving style over a 112m trip and achieved 5.1 m/kwh. Now I accept the new Niro isn't as efficient as the older model, it was a warm day, but its not that bad.

Ah your Mrs P is lovely, 🙋 hello Ursula, I hope you find out soon that you can turn off that flippin LDW. Jonathon dont be wicked to your good lady 😂
I turn mine off every time I get in my Ioniq 38kWh, drives me potty and personally I think it can be dangerous when it suddenly yanks the wheel out of your hand if you need to pass something on a clear straight road with nothing behind and dont need to indicate. (Yes I know, trolls, one should always indicate but I'm an old ex-bus driver with an unblemished driving record...and no I havent seen many accidents in my rear view mirror!)
My wife, however is dispraxic and leaves it on so that it looks after her if she needs to glance away from the road momentarily. So horses for courses... I can see it has its uses, maybe on long motorway journeys it would serve a purpose.
Glad to hear youre still enjoying your eNiro JP.👍

You know what's crazy regarding our Niros? I've been taxing for close to 3 decades and I have to say the E niro has to be the BEST taxi I've ever run. Why? well as a motorway cruiser its beautifully smooth and quiet. Around town I find the ride pretty good along with a nice tight turning circle. Passenger comfort for 4 is right up there most love the deep rear bench (most bevs have awful benches due to the batteries and have knees up mother browns 😂) and the boot, once you ditch the stupid and pointless polycarbonate space killing attachment! Why KIA why? You get a really deep usable boot that takes two large suitcases one medium and two carry ons! Factor in still class leading efficiency (I regularly achieve 5.4mpkWh for 6 months and 4.4mpkWh in the winter) and the Niro is going to be the car for most people for the next 10 years! Ps I've been doing a test on Michelin cross climate 2s and my efficiency so far is the same as the Michelin primacy 4s so what a load of bolloc*s manufacturers go on about bev only tyres being better it's utter rubbish 😂😂😂. Good luck with the Niro for the future mate you've made an exceptional decision! Cheers

Interesting. How many miles do you expect to do before you change it? There was a private hire guy in London who did 75,000 miles in 18 months but I'm wondering if anyone has done huge mileages in their e-Niro yet. I live in France and have one of the first to come into the country in 2019, we are retired folks and its our only car which is on 103,000 km now...We've done long hauls all over Europe and back to the UK and its brilliant on long journeys. We have Cross Climate 2's on our ID.3 replacing the OEM Continents and if anything our miles/kWh have risen slightly.
Although we have an ID.3 I always refer folk to the e-Niro as the car to have for all round practicality, efficiency and affordability. We did 4.3 miles/kWh on our journey south from Orkney back to the English midlands in the ID.3 which is very acceptable but I am slightly envious of the extra efficiency of the e-Niro.

With regard to Mrs P's comment about unlocking the charge socket cable pin with the key, it is possible without the key in your hand... She could always just press the unlock button on the driver or passenger door handle as usual, after which you get a very few seconds (so need to be quick) to remove the plug. She could even re-lock and unlock again (with the door buttons) once the shopping is in the car and then unplug the cable. Hope that helps.
On my E Niro 2, I can turn off the lane departure warning by holding down (rather than just clicking) for a few seconds, the steering wheel button on the on the steering wheel. However, you do have to do this *every* time you start the car again - because it's a mandatory safety "feature" for the Euro Safety Tests. 😞

That was fun! We've had our e-Niro from new since March 2019. We live in the Poitou-Charente region of France and our car was in the first batch to arrive here. Just coming up to the 105, 000 km service (65,000 miles) and loving it. It's been totally reliable apart from the 12v battery needing replacement. First couple of years were a challenge on long hauls around the country but these days there are plenty of rapid chargers on all the autoroutes. We've been to the UK 4 times in it and we have family in Switzerland so Lausanne and Zurich have been destinations too...and when a grandson gets born in Frankfurt...then you have to go!..We also went to Spain last year and on long hauls the car is comfortable, quiet and with a real world range of 450 km in the summer on fast roads. Looking forward to seeing how yours takes the miles over the next few years.

Totally agree with your wife about lane departure warning it's a total PITA, the first day I had my Nissan Leaf and it activated it was frightening, went into the settings and disabled it and I've never switched it back on, if the Nero can't switch the feature off I wouldn't buy one no matter how good the rest of the car is, suppose we have to blame it on EURONCAP for that.
I'm considering a GWM Ora 03 when the lease on the Leaf ends in a few months, the feature can be turned off on the Ora but it defaults to on every time you start up, will be a pain but it will probably become second nature to switch it off as part of the start up procedure.

I've had EVs since 2013 and I've had two e-niros, a level 2 and now last week I purchased a 4+ from a Kia dealer. Sadly this 4+ has the Primacy 3 rear tyre castling effect on the inners and the higher speed noise was bad. It also has a dead spider behind the dash perspex! They had the car 3 days out of my 7 days of owning even though they did an early MOT and early 3rd service. They say it's the tyres and they are changing them to what I don't know but the fronts have Crossclimate 2s on, I'll wait to see. I requested that they check the alignment as it's known that the rear can be out and causing this tyre defect. They got the spider out but in the process damaged the front perspex screen so a new one was ordered and supposed to be fitted this morning (Saturday) but as yet with only 15 minutes until they close I don't think I'll be getting it back until next week. Ah well I have the service manager's Skoda Enyak 85 in the meantime.

I think you did an earlier video on why the numbers stack up for you on this?
I have an ID3 on PCP and was bit worried about what to do when it ends as I’ll be retired by then, i.e. I don’t want/need another new car. I think the guaranteed future value is somewhere around £15,000. This seems to be a similar scenario to you.
I’d be more than happy to keep the car, would you agree that it would make similar sense to your outcome?

      @JonathanPorterfield  2 місяці тому

PCP is a fixed future value , with PCH its market value at auction , so its a risk that could be good either way , if values rise your fixed balloon will be great , if the used value drops due to markets values etc ,then PCH is great 👍

Any thoughts on which fuel card I ought to get when I get an EV in a few months? The e-niro is a shoe-in, and most of my driving is within 30 miles of home. I wll occasionally have longer trips that might necessitate a visit to a fast charger, but I don't want umpteen subscriptions to cover my backside for those rare occasions. So which supplier will give me the most chargers for least technological grief, in your opinion?

Hi , i recommend the electroverse RFID card that covers 90% of all rapid chargers. electroverse.octopus.energy/sign-up/magic?referralCode=crisp-shade-12433
Gridserve use your bank card for payment.
The other really great option is the Tesla Superchargers, download the tesla app to charge 'non tesla' evs.
The above options will cover 99% of all public chargers.

Hi Jonathan, interesting to see how you go about buying your lease vehicle . My lease states that I will never own the vehicle so is that common across different lease companies. Someone told me they sold their lease car to we buy any car then payed the lease company the settlement figure which left him with money for his next down payment.

Mr P - need your help please. Want to spend around £17k on an EV, narrowed my choice to Kona, Soul or now having watched a few of your videos a Niro 4+, had a Kona Premium SE before however they're now out of warranty, the Niro seems nearly there, just wish it had a HUD wish I miss. The Kona Ultimate nor any of the Soul's have a heat pump which I loved in my Kona, instant heat to clear the ice from the windscreen and warm me on a winters day. Lots of choice on autotrader but how the hell to know what is a good price these days is giving me a headache. Can you help ? By the way please tell Mrs P she has a lovely smile and should be filmed more, she's very funny !

At a trade auction £17k ( on the hammer) will buy a 4+ on a 21 plate with around 30/40k miles , as of this month june 2024 , budget around £900 more for fees and eco cars fee.
Hope this helps , and ill pass on your comments too Mrs P 👍👍

You can't turn off the lane departure warning feature on your UK spec Niro EV? I found it to be annoying on my 2022 model, but there is a button between the steering column and the door to turn it off. I love my Niro my only complaint is the drivers seat doesn't go low enough for me, since I'm 6'4" and I feel that I'm setting too high still.

A great video. I have just bought the almost identical eNiro! Can you explain Tesla charging please? I assume you can use the Tesla app to find charging stations that will take non-Tesla cars? Do you need any sort of adapter? Thank!

    • @JonathanPorterfield
      @JonathanPorterfield  2 місяці тому +1

Hi Lee , all tesla superchargers are CCS , no adapters needed , download the Tesla app and it says 'charge a non Tesla' and show ONLY the tesla sites we can use.
Super easy , register your bank card on the app , and follow instructions when you arrive at a tesla supercharger.

Do you service yours every 10,000 warranty book says every 20,000 or two years. If you take a service plan with Kia they service every 10,000 or 1 year. Do you have yours serviced with Kia dealer

The new Niro EV is 2 years or 20k miles.
For my own peace of mind i get it 'serviced' once a year as a safety check ( tyres, suspension, etc)
Ill never use franchise dealers as the independents such as HEVRA garages do more 'work' for less money !
And no warranty is at risk.

It's all relative , £7000 for folk with a £3500 budget is 'not cheap'.
For a real world ev range of 300 miles and the remaining 4 years of the 7year warranty , £18k is 'cheap' compaired to other new EVs with a 3 year warranty that are circa £30k !
