  • What has happened to my stomach?!! Why is it pooching out and no matter what I do it doesn’t go away? Why do I keep getting asked if I am going to have a baby? :)
Ever had questions like these? This video provides an answer and a little encouragement to love our new bodies!
This is the second video that deals with our paralyzed core. Watch the first video that talks about those of us who have no core muscles and how we can feel more stable.

I am paraplegic from multiple sclerosis and have a protruding abdomen because my core muscles are weak. I always had a flat abdomen until I was unable to walk. It wasn't too long afterwards that I noticed this. Thanks for your videos.

Alicia/Rue...thanks for the great video. I have found ribbed ab binders give great support as well as hold the gut in...you don't have to live wth a big gut. Fat cells grow to a larger size and you can work at shrinking those by:
    1) maintaining a calorie deficit which happens when the body burns more calories than what we are eating. When this happens it taps into the fat molecules which are stored in the fat cells. As a result, lipolysis takes place, and fat molecules are released from fat cells, leading to shrinking of their size.
    2) Exercising regularly--even dancing in your chair. Energy really comes from fat cells first, then muscle and protein.
    3) Don’t Just Diet, eat healthy: not all calories are created equal, and don’t crash diet to ose weight.
    4) Get Enough Sleep: Sleep deprivation affects weight loss friendly hormones by encouraging them to stay where they are.
    5) Cut Down on Sugar: the liver stores sugar in the form of glycogen. When we eat sugar throughout the day, we're filling up the glycogen level in the liver and when it’s full, all the surplus sugar gets converted into fatty acids and stored into the fat cells. So, these are ways the fat cells grow instead of shrink.

@@darleneburns8906 I noticed Alicia didn't answer. I wasn't being a jerk and much of her physiology of the stuff in your guts protruding is very true...but, I have had 2 spnal cord injuries and Spina Bifida and if you are in a wheelchair and start with a quad gut...you can maintain a good posture and with really good diet (no empty carbs or pastas or breads or yeast to make gases in your belly) and an ab binder and if you have core muscles, you can suck your gut in with the ab binder. Spina Bifida people normally have a weight issue, but if you make a conscious effort, positive things will happen.

@morgancalvi6675 you. I'm a quadriplegic, 33 year old male. Just asking what type of ab binder you using?

Iv been a quadriplegic for nearly 25 years now and quad belly has been an issue from almost day 1 of my injury. When I was first able to get up out of bed and into my first wheelchair I had thought I put on a few pounds from being in bed so long until i noticed my stomach was getting bigger and bigger rapidly and my weight had barely climbed at all. Went back for a monthly check up and asked why my stomach now looked like I went ham at every buffet in town and that’s when they told me about quad gut or para belly. After living with it for so long Iv never really found much to help with it, 10 extra pounds looks like 30 pounds when your stomach muscles are gone. I found that hiding it behind a binder is the only way to hide it in public . I was just unlucky because I always see quad bellies that are so little and I wound up with a basketball for a lap.I just learned to except it and it makes for a great arm rest 😂.

Power to the para-belly! I feel like it's something we earned. We are allowed to have a belly!
I was also told that it happens because the muscles relax in the core which allows everything to sorta protrude.
