Lately I come here every day to hear Orange crush. It helps me bear with the enormously uncertain stage I’m going through. It kinda helps me focus a bit and be less soft, less faint... I must bite. I MUST. It’s that or keep wasting my life in numbness and paralysis... On a side note, the bass sounds to me so much like a fender Jazzbass bridge pick up... but at the same time reminds me of an orchestral instrument... I love it. I suppose it’s based on a pulse wave and some fairy dust.
I came across an Eventide H3000. In a pawnshop, went back the next day to get it and it was sold.. lesson learned, when it's there in front of you , BUY IT.. I'm still regretting it today..
Since i can`t afford a real one i bought the Arturia Matrix 12 Vst. It has some of the most beautiful pads i have ever heard. Thank god there are software compromises for the people!
I recently tried the matrix 12 v out for the first time which inevitably lead me to the real thing, it's such a sophisticated synth and Id still say is ahead of its time control and modulation routing wise. Plus the choice of filters is crazy. Definitely a Swiss army knife synth.
Arturia Matrix-12 is a complete flop. Only the GUI looks the same. And I feel sorry to say that because I'd really like to have a proper Matrix-12 or 6 VST. But there just aren't any. :(
Gorgeous - and the envelopes aren't nearly as bad (speed) as they've been made out to be. Now that I've got the Wave 2.2 in my arsenal, the next acquisition is one of these beauties :)
Every sound this synth makes is beautiful. I have a Matrix 1000 and I feel the same about it, even thought your Matrix is a little better than my Matrix.
The Matrix 12 is incredible for pads and special FX sounds. Sadly with so many pages and modulation capabilities it is quite convoluted. Where the Matrix 12 really shines is thinking of it as 12 mono synths then building a patch up from there. Edit each voice slightly different then pan each voice across the stereo spectrum and the breadth and richness are to die for.
+robinsss Not all of them - I usually only post my own material, but for some of these Matrix sounds i *had* to perform those songs since I thought the sounds were perfect for them. So, in order: "Orange Crush" is W. Carlos' masterpiece "Title Music From A Clockwork Orange (From Purcell's "Music For The Funeral Of Queen Mary")"; "Wooden Puppet Story" is Fiorenzo Carpi's beautiful "Lucignolo" (from "Le Avventure Di Pinocchio"); "Movie Scene" is something I just came up with, although in the beginning of it I was probably thinking of Georges Delerue's magnificent "Thème De Camille" (from the soundtrack of "Le Mépris"; "Thriller Movie" is just my improvisation in drama tv/movie style; "St. Genevieve" is just my improvisation, it's a classic path that appeared on the Oberheim OB-8; "Ennio's Harmonica" is from Ennio Morricone's beautifully haunting "L'Uomo Dell'Armonica" (from the soundtrack to "Once Upon A Time In The West"); "Boats & Ferraris" is just my improvisation in Miami Vice style; - hope this helps, I'll add it to the description
When this was uploaded, the M12 was worth about $4500. Today its around 12-14k. Expensive H3000s were like $1000. Now they are closer to 3k. Will be interesting to come back in 2026 and see where we are - if the world still exists
In case you're not familiar with the original theme - it was from the soundtrack of Pinocchio, a a song indelibly impressed in the mind of italian kids of my generation: ua-cam.com/video/eh1qfLhe8UU/v-deo.html
Beautiful sounds! Any chance you would do a Miami Vice sounds video with your Memorymoog, Jupiter 8, DX7, Linndrum, and Fairlight? They were Jan Hammer’s recipe, and you have them ALL! Cheers!
Thank you Paulo. You inspire me to crack my Arturia Matrix-12 with the Orange Crush Brass (their patch was Brass-12 with a little bit of modification)> Beauty is the word!
+lewdie Hi lewdie, I'm not sure I understand the question? Do you mean without effects? If yes, the Matrix-12 sounds great without FX, and even better with them.
+lewdie Gotcha (usually when people refer to "dry" in music they mean without effects) - I think music (and the gear used to make it) is a very subjective thing, so if you took a beautiful Matrix-12 sound, ran it through eighteen distortion guitar pedals, equalized it in the harshest manner by emphasizing all the wrong frequencies by 500%, added twenty-seven bit-crusher plugins each one set to 8-bit, compressed it with an infinity ratio and setting the makeup gain to 100%, then saved the sound as an MP3 at 32kbit/s, it would probably sound very bad - BUT some death metal goth core musicians might find that sound extremely pleasing to his/her ears - so at the end of the day, it's all relative

Powerful, always fun to watch somebody who can actually PLAY! Could you tell me what songs were the inspiration for the awesome Wooden Puppet Story and St. Genevieve?
+Peregrin Tuk Thank you, Peregrin! I'm glad you asked, the one in '"Wooden Puppet Story'" is a song that's very dear to my heart - you see, although I've been living in America for the past twenty years, I was born and raised in Italy, and all the kids of my generation watched a tv series that's now considered a classic, based on the famous Pinocchio book by Collodi. The music of that movie series was incredibly beautiful, and one of the songs that always transports me back to the magical period of childhood was the music that played at the beginning of each episode - the "theme of Lucignolo" (Lucignolo is one of the characters in the fable) - because beside watching in awe every episode I also had the soundtrack record spinning on the turntable when I was a child, and its beauty haunted me. I think this is one of the songs that also contributed to me having a passion for music for life. Here is the magnificent original soundtrack by the great Fiorenzo Carpi: ua-cam.com/video/eh1qfLhe8UU/v-deo.html - In the "St. Genevieve" patch, I was just improvising on the spot. St. Genevieve is a patch that appeared on the cool Oberheim OB-8 and was reprised on the Matrix-12. I hope this helps and thanks so much for watching the channel :)
+SynthMania Thank you! what a nice little tune! Songs from childhood stick with you forever… Your European influences are unmistakeable in many of your demo choices ;)
I never liked the OB Matrix 12 or the Xpander (a 6 voice Matrix 12 sawed in half without the keyboard) much, as the envelopes are too slow. Oberheim chose to make the envelopes in software and the hardware in the mid-80s wasn't up to par. Forget about making snappy, percussive sounds on this. Other than that, it's a killer synth. Probably the best analog to model electric strings or pads on. There the envelopes aren't that important. This is the synth that Nitzer Ebb used on their seminal "Shame" album. It's all Xpander going on there, produced by the legendary Flood. The 3 displays on the Matrix 12 were sourced from a cash register from NEC :-) If one of them dies, save your tears, on this site you can order a replacement display: www.lenham.clara.net/sound/obvfd.html
