I saw video of them doing this before in zoo's. They said the females did it for discipline and also to get their scent on their child.the zoo said it was not a sexual thing. Most of the females in captivity did that.
My understanding is that they do that but only when they are first born. This is a toddler. I’ve watched enough gorillas in captivity videos to feel certain there is actually a lot of this kind of behavior between parents and offspring (of all ages) and between siblings and “aunts” and little ones that absolutely is sexual. They don’t engage in this kind of behavior in the wild so while I’m no expert, I strongly believe it’s a side effect of captivity. In the wild they live in bigger groups with more adult options plus have access to other groups if necessary. They also spend fully occupied days obtaining food, water, shelter, etc. so they’re not constantly bored. I used to feel that keeping endangered animals in captivity was a necessary evil but now that I’ve seen some truly horrifying behavior from all the Great Ape species in captivity I’m not so sure.
