Sailing Offshore in 35 knots - Indian Ocean - Ep.90

  • After fixing our steering we leave our isolated island group for the first time since lockdown started only to encounter 35 knot winds on our offshore passage to the Island of Nias off the west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. Even though we were pounding upwind in 35 knots of wind and horizontal rain, it was still exhilarating to be out sailing offshore on the Indian Ocean once more. Boat life is always full of surprises.
We are a British couple who set off from England in 2016 to fulfill our dream of sailing around the world on our 37ft sail boat, Florence. Along the way we share the live aboard lifestyle with the highs and lows of travelling around the world by boat, our own little tiny house. Boat life out at sea on the ocean and off the grid.

Watching you both working the boat is a joy! You're so competent and obviously make a great team. I'm working my way through your videos and loving every minute of it!
PS. I'd say that that was a sailfish. They can be pretty mean in a cockpit so not such a bad thing that it escaped!
    Sail safe both. X

Hats off to you guys! Can’t have been easy, the last 7 months. We really enjoy your videos. I know we don’t see everything you go through but we love your natural and easy going style. Right now your channel and The Sailing Frenchman are our favourite sailing vlogs. We can also relate to your sense of isolation. We spent 4 months isolating in a Marina in the Dominican Republic last year with 8 other boats. Managed to get back to Canada and now trying to get back to our boat.

@9:10; YES!!! I have to admit, I was quite distracted from Matt, when I saw the splash behind him! I was instantly yelling “FISH ON!!!” (At first, I didn’t realise it was a Marlin, I thought it may have been a barracuda, or Mackerel, until I saw the replay...) 😮😁

IMPORTANT! When you fitted the autopilot to the bracket, it *looks* like you fitted the fixing pin up from underneath and secured it with the split pin at the top. If at all possible, fixing pins (or bolts) should always be fitted from above with the securing split pin at the bottom, ensuring if the split pin should come out, the fixing pin will stay in place and the autopilot unit won't come away from the bracket. Sorry to sound picky, but I have a background in these things and it rang alarm bells when I saw it. Other than that, congratualtios on another great video. I've been following your videos for around a year now and never miss an installment. Wishing you a happy and safe new year.

Thanks for your concern. The pin just has a securing R-clip on both ends so no difference which way up I put it. I did it from underneath so that I could see to put the second clip in on top. The old one had been like this for many years so hopefully we won't have a problem. Maybe we can feed back to Raymarine :-)

@@SailingYachtFlorence Ah I understand. Strange though as it's a very important point. Is it possible that the bracket was intended to be mounted (originally) at 90 degrees so that the pin would be inserted horizontally? Worthwhile keeping an eye on it.

If you’re going to hunt for fish then make sure you have a
super strong rig-set-up with wire so a lure with hooks attached
does not get taken by a fish, the fish could suffer for a long very time before it eventually dies!

Ha Ha! We just bought a package of Raymarine autopilot parts from Southhampton, UK (probably the same dealer) for our cruising boat, now in Southern Mexico. We had to ship it courier from the UK to San Diego, California; get a friend of a friend to hand carry it across the land border at Tijuana (still closed with limited exceptions) and then freight it down through Mexico. It dropped into place in five minutes. The things cruisers do!

Hey guys, I am enjoying the couple videos I have watched so far. Next time you might want to consider a tiller pilot in conjunction with your servopendulum. I use this system with my monitor and tiller pilots can be got really cheap. This system allows the tiller pilot to do the brains and the pendulum to do the heavy lifting. Great for light wind or calm motoring, not necessarily will keep a perfect course with shifting currents, etc. but should last a very long time and dependable for $100. Free range sailing has a couple options to mount it. If you find one laying around, grab it up and give it a try. Best of luck to you!

(The next large island North of Nias (Simeulue) was the epicentre of a 9.3 magnitude earthquake on Boxing Day 2004, killing an estimated 300 000 people in the region, due to the initial ‘quake and subsequent series of tsunamis - some of which were purported to be up to 30m high!(?) There is a legendary right-hand point break, (Lagudri(?) Lugundri(?) Bay) famed for it’s incredible barrels and apparently the sea floor in that region (Including at the break) has supposedly dropped 2m from the impact of the tectonic shift!)

Nice sail, barring the squalls. She is a beautiful boat. Reminds me of my last boat, a. Tartan 37. Similar vintage and design. Also a great sailing boat. Have you thought or experimented at all with hooking up a tiller pilot to your Aries? My be a good back up. On my KP 44 and Cal 46, I always had 3 pilots, because they all break down and who wants to hand steer for days!? We had an old but dependable below decks rotary drive pilot and 2 back up wheel pilots for calmer conditions. Hooked up a tiller pilot to my Alberg 35 onto the Monitor vane gear. Worked well the tiller pilot could tap into the mechanical advantage of the vane gear. Not as fast reacting as the real thing but worked. Good luck on a great weather window accross when you do go. Never sailed the Indian Ocean.

I love so much about your videos! I like learning about what it is like to sail. I also like when you show what a hike down the road is like too. At about 10:00, the winds increase and you "take a reef" or lower the amount of sail area. Why? Would you flip over? Or rip the sails? Is it like driving too fast on a bumpy road and stuff breaks?

    • @SailingYachtFlorence
      @SailingYachtFlorence  3 роки тому +2

Hi Christopher If we don't take in a reef we can damage the sails, ropes and rigging, and put excessive strain on Florence. We also lean over so far that it becomes inefficient and instead of going forwards to where we want to go, we just get blown sideways instead. Yes it is similar to driving too fast on a bumpy road.

@14:30; There is a world famous TV show producer (Originally Australian, before moving over to the US for business interests) named Reg Grundy, so the obvious rhyming slang for knickers or underwear as we call them in Australia, is “Reg Grundies” - (Undies)👍🇦🇺😉

Good to see you sailing, thinking, moving quickly, reefing. Good on you both. Glad your auto-steering part worked. Hope it lasts. Did not anticipate that you don’t do much fishing; you don’t keep any real fishing tackle? I’m surprised. Texas

you've been on the southwestern side of the indonesian islands for quite a while now. Does it feels safe over there compared to the other side of the major islands and the Strait of Malakka?

There are many dangers around, not sure exactly what you mean.
Safe from what? Lightning? Squalls? Corruption? Pirates? Tsunami? Earthquakes? Covid? Malaria? Denghi? Collisions with fishing boats?
Generally we have felt pretty happy and safe here apart from a couple of things which we will expand upon in a couple of videos time.

@@SailingYachtFlorence I am talking about piracy as I was reading an updated French report yesterday where the Strait of Malakka was mentioned as the #1 hotspot in this regard. We're preparing for Jimmy Cornells'GLYWO500, a 2,5 year around the world sailing rally starting in September. The route is still provisional and has room for own navigation so we're looking at alternative options along the way. To prevent spoiler alerts you can also reply on our Cat Greatcircle Facebook or Insta if you prefer

The problems for us in the Malacca straits were dodging poorly or un-lit fishing boats at night in the middle of massive thunder and lightning storms, and that is why we don't want to sail the Malacca strait again if we can avoid it. We made sure we were on the Malaysian side at night to reduce the piracy risk (based on research). We have not had piracy concerns in Indonesia to be honest apart from one incident recently which we see as a one off isolated incident. We would not list piracy as a concern following the route we took through Indonesia or on this side. Check on the type of piracy, hostage taking is very different to stealing stuff that can be sold off of anchored commercial ships.

Make sure you coat the hardware on this one that you couldn't remove on the old one...so you can fix the new one when it breaks.
